SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

0914 3

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK… The pace in the Parish is certainly “ramping up” as we begin this month of May! Looking through the month of May - this Sunday (May 6) – our children will celebrate the “Crowning of Mary” at the 11:00AM Mass. The month of May is dedicated to Mary the Mother of God, and we celebrate her Motherhood and Queenship in the Church. Next weekend we celebrate Mother’s Day (May 13) and our traditional Mother’s Day Remembrance Masses. The following weekend will be the great Feast of Pentecost and we will celebrate First Communion at the 11:00AM Mass that Sunday (May 20). The last Sunday of May will be our Memorial Day Mass and Outdoor Ceremony after the 11:00AM Mass. May will be a “full” and busy month indeed! June, as we know, is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I notice that we have the entire month of June free for booking the Sacred Heart Memorial Candle in the church. This is a beautiful month to reserve the candle in memory of someone who has passed, or for some special intention. Sacred Heart of Jesus – Have Mercy on Us! I’d like to address something that has often come up, but that I have not had the time to mention. Very often we will come across what some might consider, the “opportunity” to attend some type of event – in a private home or in a more public setting - having to do with the “Occult” – the use of mediums, psychics, mind readers, or even those who seek out someone to read their palm or predict the future. While all of this seems “innocent” enough, in reality it goes against the Teaching of the Church, and can actually be quite dangerous to individuals in some instances. I certainly know how so many of us long to know or be reassured that our loved ones are at peace after their death, or we seek some sign that they have “crossed over”. In some instances we find it fascinating to have someone who has not met us before, to tell us about our past lives or more interestingly - what the future holds. While these things can seem to be fun and innocent – they open us up to powers that may not be of God. Pope Francis recently spoke about the increased need for Exorcists and Exorcisms in the Church, and he believes it has a lot to do with a secularization of the culture, which sometimes seeks something beyond, but rather than opening up to God - may be opening up to Evil. I am not a “fear monger”, but I do recommend that those who might find themselves drawn to celebrities like “The Long Island Medium”, or others who seek to tell the future – even with good intentions - to stay away from such things! God is real and so is The Devil, who only has the power we give him. This is not to scare any of you who might have gone to such things in the past, but merely a caution for the future. I know that I prefer to look to God for my peace and strength, and my assurance that all is in God’s Loving Hands in the future! I also wanted to put a call out to any of our Parish Youth - Post Confirmation – to consider being trained as a Reader or Eucharistic Minister at Mass. I am very proud of our Youth who have been involved in our Youth Ministry, as Altar Servers, and as part of other Youth Programs over the years, and I would like to ask anyone who might like to serve in our parish and be considered for these Ministries, to call our Parish Office at 562-3450 or email [email protected]. We would like to do the Ministries Training before the Summer begins. Just a few “shout outs” to our Youth – Congratulations to Danielle Bovat for taking Second Place in the Annual “Pro-Life” of Pioneer Valley Essay Contest! Also I noted in the local newspaper some of our Athletes – like Rebecca Monti who throws the Javelin, and Hannah Jury who runs the Relay as part of the Westfield High School Track Team! Congrats to all our Spring Athletes and those receiving awards and scholarships – your parish is proud of you! Just a reminder that this weekend and next – our parishioner - Dawn Whitehill - will celebrate the Grand Opening of her new business “The Pottery Cellar” at the Mill at Crane Pond, 77 Mill Street! Dawn is the wife and mother of our RCIA Neophytes – Jeff and Amber, respectively! The shop will feature authentic Polish Pottery as well as rustic and other home décor items. Stop by, check out the store, & wish Dawn the best in her new venture! God Bless, Fr. Dan

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

FROM BISHOP ROZANSKI Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Soon our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Last year, Pope Francis encouraged us, “to engage in constructive forms of communication that reject prejudice towards others and foster a culture of encounter” (World Communications Day Message, 2017). By generously supporting this collection, you are spreading the Gospel and helping others encounter Christ every day. Your gifts will not only support projects on a national and international scale but also here in our own diocese. Of the funds we collect, one-half will remain here in the diocese to assist our evangelization efforts though local communications projects. With your support of the CCC, a radio station in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being established to share the Gospel with those living in the North Kivu province, on the far eastern border of the country. This radio station will provide people with quality, faith-filled programming to encourage spiritual growth and evangelization. Programming will include recitation of the Rosary, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, catechetical programs, and Catholic news. Parishes, schools, diocesan offices, universities, and even family homes will be involved in the preparation and broadcasting, making the radio a virtual meeting place where many people will share their faith and life experiences. It is through your generosity that this project, and others like it, can spread the Gospel around the world. For more information about the collection and the projects it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccc. Support the collection and connect with Christ. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski Bishop of Springfield

O God our Loving and Merciful Father, We thank you for your precious gifts

of faith, hope, and love. We thank you for our many blessings.

Now, help us share God’s mercy with one another and give as generously as we ourselves have received

from you. We offer the gifts of ourselves, our time, talents, and

treasures as true acts of faith that reflect our love for you and our neighbor.

Accept our offerings as a token of gratitude for all you have done.

Help us to reach out to others as you, our Lord and God, have reached out to us.

May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ in our lives.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
