Thanks to Bill White for sharing this useful advice for those who do not have their own Facebook account. Every time I go to the church's Facebook page I get a notice at the bottom of the screen to log-in to Facebook or set up a new account. When that notice first appears it doesn't show any option to exit the "request". However, after 2-3 seconds another box appears on the screen allowing the option to select "not now". Select the not now option and you can watch the live streaming without a Facebook account.

Next Sunday's Mass Readings – October 11, 2020

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time A

Reading 1 Isaiah 25:6-10A

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and

pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations;

he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will

remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said: "Behold our God, to whom we looked

to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!" For the hand of the

LORD will rest on this mountain.

Responsorial Psalm Psalms 23:1-3A, 3B-4, 5, 6

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

He guides me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil;

for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life;

and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.

R. I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

Reading 2 Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20

Brothers and sisters:

I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all

things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need.

I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My God will fully supply

whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel Matthew 22:1-14

Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying,

"The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.

He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come.

A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and

fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away,

one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come.

Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets

and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet

the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.

The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?'

But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the

darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen."

SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND: PRIESTS' HEALTH AND RETIREMENT FUND

In addition to parish assessments and fees (you can find these in our annual finance report) and priests' own membership dues, our diocese also relies on voluntary contributions from the faithful to help fund the "Priests' Health and Retirement Association" which provides the medical insurance coverage and retirement pensions for the priests of our diocese. Two of our own parishioners are supported by the PHRA: Fr. Leon Alexander and Fr. Bill Petro. Like them, I also receive very good health insurance thanks to the PHRA.

In normal times (remember them?) a special second collection is taken up in March (and there was a designated envelope in our packets back them). This year that collection got hijacked by the sudden halt to in-person Masses because of the Covid19 pandemic. Therefore, Bishop Brennan has asked parishes to re-do this collection this weekend. He is confident that WV Catholics are happy to support the priests who have served their spiritual needs for many years.

It is not unimportant that young men who may be considering becoming priests see that retired priests are generally well cared for. While many retired priests receive a pension and prefer to make their own living arrangements, there are also dedicated institutions to serve them. In Wheeling, our diocese owns 2 apartment buildings on which the top floors are intended for retired priests. Next door is an Catholic assisted living facility if needed. Down the street is a Catholic nursing home when that kind of care is required.

Since we will not have in-person Masses this weekend, you are welcome to designate online, send or drop off your contribution to the PHRA whenever it is convenient. For checks, please make them payable to Blessed Sacrament and then put PHRA on the memo line.

HEALING JUSTICE: a film by Shakti Butler

Our newest film, "Healing Justice", explores the causes and consequences of the current North American justice system and its effect on marginalized communities. The film walks back through the history of violence that has led to our current system, bringing into focus the histories of trauma – on a personal, interpersonal, community, and generational level. This powerful documentary addresses the school-to-prison pipeline, the need for comprehensive criminal justice reform, and the importance of healing and restorative practices.

Please join us for an online film screening of Healing Justice, as well as a discussion moderated by Reverend Ron English around the key issues and concepts of this powerful documentary about restorative justice. Healing Justice "addresses the school to prison pipeline, the need for comprehensive criminal justice reform, and the importance of healing and restorative practices." In addition to screening and discussing the film, there will also be time to also explore the opportunities for restorative justice practices and programs in West Virginia. You can view the trailer for the film by clicking here. The film will be viewed in sections and we hope you can make it for all three: The Impact of Trauma (Wed., October 7th, 12-1pm) Redefining Justice (Wed., October 14th, 12-1pm) The Power of Healing (Wed., October 21st, 12-1pm) By registering you will receive a zoom link prior to the first screening on October 7th.

I know how important angels are—for many reasons. Being born on Guardian Angels Day, and being three months early, God made sure I’ve been protected by my angels all my life and they continue that work each and every day! With traveling so much for work, there are countless times that my angels have interceded for my safety. They actually earn their wings protecting me—and for that—I am so grateful! Many times, I have felt and heard their wings surrounding me or felt their voices stopping me from going into a dangerous situation while on the road. So today is for my angels and for thanking God for giving them to me!
