Recycling News

We’ve become aware that the cities of Charleston and South Charleston are no longer able to take recycling to Raleigh

County to be recycled as that facility has had to close. The Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority has a recycling center

on Slack Street in Charleston for certain recyclables, but ONLY if those materials are brought to the center pre-separated.

For example, newspapers and #2 plastics can be recycled at the Slack Street facility but only if they are in separate bags –

they cannot be mixed together. For more information about what can be recycled at the facility, or to find out where you

can recycle items Slack Street does not take, go to their website: https://www.kanawharecycles.org/locations/Kanawha-County-Solid-Waste-Authority.aspx

Recycling Ministry? Many places/organizations around our world have figured out ways to improve recycling opportunities in their

communities. Do you feel called to do this in our community? We would like to help these individuals find each other

and get started in what would be a great ministry. Please let us know if you would like to be part of this group. You can

email us at [email protected].

Thank you to the folks who have already indicated their interest in this important ministry!

On Thursday, August 27th, for the Memorial of St. Monica,

Fr. John will celebrate a Mass for the Conversion of Lost Souls, at noon.

The fourth-century saint, Monica, was a Christian, but her husband was a pagan. Monica’s virtues and prayers, however,

converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, went astray in faith and morals,

Monica’s tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him where he went to teach, and there continued to

storm heaven with prayers for her son. Finally, she had the joy of witnessing Augustine being baptized.

In addition to being one of the patron saints of mothers, St. Monica is most often invoked for the conversion of children

who have left the Church. We will celebrate this Mass on her feast day to pray in a special way for all those who have

wandered from the faith.

You may submit names of individuals to be especially entrusted to the powerful intercession of St. Monica during the

Mass. (Fr. John will not read aloud each name, but offer the group up for prayer.) We will have a basket present in the

breezeway where you can write names on a slip of paper. Specific names are not needed – a prayer for “my

grandchildren” would be very appropriate, for example. You can drop off notes with names when you come through

Communion in cars. You can also email names you wish to have included ([email protected]).

Baptism Anniversaries

We would love to recognize everyone’s anniversary of Baptism, but we do not know the dates for most of our

parishioners. Please send us an email/letter with your household’s names and dates of Baptism. If you do not know your

date of Baptism, you can request this information from the church where you were baptised. (Every Catholic church is

required to keep a record of all Baptisms that occurred there.) If you were baptized here at Blessed Sacrament, just

indicate the year and we'll look up the actual date for you.

Next Sunday's Mass Readings – August 23, 2020

Reading 1 Isaiah 22:19-23

Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace: “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your

station. On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with

your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of

Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut when he shuts,

no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.”

Responsorial Psalm Psalms 138:1-2, 2-3, 6, 8

R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.

I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart, or you have heard the words of my mouth;

in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise; I will worship at your holy temple.

R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.

I will give thanks to your name, because of your kindness and your truth:

When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me.

R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.

The LORD is exalted, yet the lowly he sees, and the proud he knows from afar.

Your kindness, O LORD, endures forever; forsake not the work of your hands.

R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.

Reading II Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how

unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the

Lord anything that he may be repaid? For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever.

Amen.

Gospel Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But

who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in

reply, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not

prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;

and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he

was the Christ.

PARISH PICNIC With great reluctance, I accept the verdict that we will simply not be able to hold our Parish Picnic as usual on the Sunday after Labor Day. Some folks have made some creative suggestions about other – safe – ways that we can enjoy one another. If you have any ideas, please let me know!

Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley

THE MISSION of Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley is to support the independent living of older adults in the communities we serve by lending a helping hand, neighbor to neighbor.

Blessed Sacrament is one of the "Cornerstone Congregations" that supports FIAGKV with a monthly allotment.

A case story from director Jennifer Waggener We never know what journey the next phone call to our office holds. Nearly every week we have the opportunity to meet people facing significant obstacles or overwhelming challenges in their lives that have brought them to a desperate place. Sometimes they've been on the phone for days with no answers. Other times they've trusted family or friends and been devastated to learn it was a mistake. Too often, by the time our phone rings, the person on the other end is convinced that nobody cares and that there is no way out of their situation. Too often, they feel alone in the world. We got one of those calls last week from an elderly woman in Putnam County. She has been paying family members a "fee" she can't afford so they will "help" her get groceries. The last two times they said they would help, she ended up with about a third of the groceries she'd paid for and was told to be grateful for it. She called us in tears. She said she'd been living on canned corn and soup for several days. When I finally got her to calm down a bit, I asked her what she needed immediately. "What can we bring you now to get you through until we find you a regular volunteer?" Her answer? Cat food and litter. "We'll absolutely get that, but what about for *you*?" I asked. "Taking care of my babies will do more for me right now than a sandwich will," she replied. "They're my heart." Well. Mine broke in two just then. We placed a full order for a variety of groceries, fit for her and for her cats. One of our amazing volunteers will pick it all up and deliver the goods to her this afternoon. As the details fell into place for us to help this woman, I couldn't help but feel so blessed to have the chance to meet her where she is, to fill a great need, no questions asked, because we can. I'm deeply grateful for the grace of decent people with a heart for their fellow neighbors. I strive to be one every morning I wake up. I don't always succeed, but it sure makes this walk through life feel a whole lot more meaningful just

to try. ❤️ Be kind. Love your neighbors. Give grace whenever possible. Isn't that what we all want from each other? It starts with me. It starts with you. We can do this life right, together.

We are extending an open invitation for you to join us. There are a multitude of ways you can be part of this volunteer movement, dedicated to helping our older neighbors live their best lives in their golden years. You can DONATE! Financial support of our work is vital to its sustainability and is the constant struggle of our small but mighty nonprofit. Your contribution is 100% tax deductible and received with gratitude. You can VOLUNTEER! We often say, "Many are needed, all our welcome!" And it's true! Our programs are built to ensure that anyone who wants to serve will have an opportunity. Whether you have a couple of hours a month to give or are looking to get heavily involved - we've got you covered. You can SPREAD THE WORD! Are you a member of a community organization? Does the company you own or work for facilitate volunteer work days? Is your congregation open to innovative ways to serve their community through mission and service? We'd love to talk to you! You can LIKE & SHARE our social media posts - we're everywhere! Instagram? YEP. Twitter? YOU KNOW IT. Facebook? OH YEAH. We've even got a LinkedIn page, if that's MORE YOUR THING. Our mission is not that complicated: to support the independent living of older adults in the communities we serve by lending a helping hand, neighbor to neighbor. But we can't do it without your support. Our invitation stands...today and always. We hope you'll join us.

The 2020 Summit on Race Matters in West Virginia, presented by The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation (in which we have some of our parish reserve funds invested), had a spectacular launch last week. 36 donors' financial contributions made the Summit possible. More than 850 attendees took time out of their busy lives to join in enlightening conversations about race. To view the recorded video of that first summit session go to: https://racematterswv.tv/ses1vid/ and use this password: SORM2020 You can also visit https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g3SPk7CBl2vdTq-0gOiqU1aH3Bh2dPkh/view to see a unique graphic art summary of session 1 done by artist Emily Marko.
