CHURCHES

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

WELCOME BISHOP MONFORTON: We welcome Bishop Monforton as celebrant at our 9:30am Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Bishop is the pastor of the diocese which makes him pastor of all the parishes. We are very grateful when he visits one of our parishes. May God continue to bless him and his important ministry as shepherd of our diocese.

BETTER THAN GREAT NEWS FOR THE WINTERSVILLE PARISHES: For many years, many people have asked me about starting a youth group in Wintersville. I have asked these caring people if they are willing to be in charge. They said they would not be in charge, but would help in any way they could. Finally, God has brought to us a youth group leader who is willing to take charge! He came to talk with Fr. Michael and me a few weeks ago. After much prayer and discussion, we decided to make him our Youth Group Director. His name is Bobby Jon Bauman and he is a member of Blessed Sacrament Church. However, I need some other couples or persons to help him in this important ministry. My hope is to meet as a team in the month of February and then to start our youth group in Lent. The group would meet once a week. It is a fact nationwide, that we are losing our youth because we have nothing for them and do not reach out to them. WELL HERE IS OUR CHANCE! If you are willing to help with our youth group, please pray and think about it this week (and decide with your spouse, if you are married). There will be sign-up sheets next week for you to sign-up. Or if you want to let us know this week, simply call me or Fr. Michael and tell us that you are interested (264-0868). I believe that the Lord is guiding us in this endeavor. Please be open to his call and help our youth be drawn closer to Christ.

MEMORIAL OF FUNERAL VESTMENTS: If you see us wearing different vestments during a funeral: the chasuble (what the priest wears), the dalmatic (what the deacon wears) and the pall (which covers the coffin as a

symbol of our baptism), I want you to know that a donation was given to purchase them by Stella Hornyak, in remembrance of her beloved husband, Mike Hornyak. Thanks so much to Stella and her family for doing this in remembrance of Mike. He is missed by so many, including myself. May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

VOCATIONS, THE TOUR 2017: The gathering for our area is at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:00pm, in the upper Sargus Hall. I encourage anyone (male or female) who feels or has felt a call (or even a passing thought) to becoming a priest or a religious, to please come to the gathering.

FLU SEASON: During this season of flu and other infirmities, and if you do not shake the hand of the persons near to you at Mass, please just wave or more in line with the Scripture, say: “Peace be with you.” If someone does this at the sign of peace, please do not be offended. They are trying to save you from the suffering of possibly getting the germs of this “different” winter. God knows, I know what it can do to you.

REST IN PEACE: Please remember in your prayers the kind repose of the soul of Dakota McCleery, son of Valerie Shrieve (OLL). May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of

God rest in peace. Amen.

May God bless you for your goodness to his Church for the week of

(Comfort for the Afflicted)

That all those who are afflicted, especially the poor, refugees, and marginalized, may find welcome and

comfort in our communities.

“A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.”

(pertaining to today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 5:13-16)

The light of the world is meant to be seen. Turn on a closet light and then shut the door; what good does such a light serve? Only the kind of light that defeats the darkness in a way perceivable to the human eye is of any use. Since we are the thinking animals, all of creation waits upon our decisions. What are we doing with our light?

You and I must hold the truth high, and not cling to it privately in safe and easy places, like church. The light of the world is needed in government and in business, in schools and in hospitals. The internet could use a multitude of candles lit in its dim corners. Our families could use the light of our witness, not in proud words but in compassionate service. Wherever you’re likely to go today is a place where darkness could use the challenge of a bold light.

Meditate on the people who have brought light to you as teachers, mentors, and bearers of hope. How can you pass the torch to the next person?

Brainstorm a short list of ways to bring the light of faith to your territory. Resolve to burn more brightly! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ANNUAL RAFFLE for BISHOP JOHN KING MUSSIO ELEMENTARY AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL: The annual raffle began with ticket sales in early January. Tickets are once again $20.00 each and each family from the schools are asked to sell at least ten. The drawing will be held after the annual Bishop Mussio Day Mass in Lanman Hall at Catholic Central High School on Friday, April 28. Grand prize: $5,000.00; 2nd prize: 2,000.00; 3rd prize: $1,000.00. However, on Feb. 17 we will hold an early bird drawing for five lucky $100.00 winners. This fundraiser is vital to aid in meeting the operating expenses at the schools, so we ask for your continued support. Please help us to reach our goal of $20,000.00 in ticket sales! If you know any families whose children attend the schools, ask them for a ticket and / or envelopes with tickets have been placed in the church pews. Won’t you please purchase one? If you would like more, please contact the elementary school at 264-255 or the junior high school at 346-0028. Thank you for all you do to support our Catholic schools!
