Using the touch controls

16

The cooking surfaceYour ceramic cooktop is made of anextremely hard and durable materialthat should give you many years of useunder normal conditions. The surface isscratch resistant, not scratch proof.Avoid using cookware with ridged bot-toms. Ridged pots with dirty or chippedenamel bottoms may scratch thecooktop if they are pulled across theceramic surface.

Make sure the cooktop and pot bottomsare clean before cooking. Certainitems, particularly sugar grains orcrystallized liquids such as molasses orsyrups are actually harder than ceramicand can scratch the surface if they arenot cleaned off immediately. Small orlight scratches will not affect the safetyor performance of the cooktop however.

The burner rings and touch controls arefused into the ceramic glass and are re-sistant to wear if properly maintained.Do not use abrasive cleaners or pads,as they may eventually wear off therings.

Any melted solids (e.g. sugar, plas-tic, syrup, aluminium foil, etc.)should be removed as quickly aspossible and while the burner is stillwarm. If they are allowed to harden, the cooktop may become pitted.Scrape the melted item off thecooktop using a razor blade scraper.Once the cooktop has cooled, remove any remaining residue usinga ceramic cooktop cleaner.

Pots and pans

Special cookware is not required, butas is true with all types of cooking ap-pliances, the better the cookware, thebetter the performance.

Following these tips will allow you tomake the most of your ceramiccooktop.

– For the most even and energy effi-cient cooking, the diameter of thepots should match the diameter ofthe burners as closely as possible.

– Use cookware with thick, flat, smoothbottoms. Slightly concave bottomswill also work adequately. Pans withconvex bottoms will not cook well.

Selecting cookware

17

– Using a lid while cooking will mini-mize the loss of heat and decreasethe cooking time.

– Sometimes what appear to bescratches are not. Metallic lines suchas those left by copper or aluminumpans can be removed using anon-abrasive ceramic cooktopcleaner. Let the cooktop cool beforecleaning.

– Cast iron, glass or stoneware shouldnot be used because they have poorheat transfer and may scratch thesurface.

Selecting cookware

18

Use a product suitable for cleaningceramic cooking surfaces. If you havedifficulty locating a suitable product, contact Miele’s Technical ServiceDepartment. Do not use glass cleanerson the cooktop. They leave a residuethat can fuse onto and stain thecooktop when cooking at high temper-atures.

Never use abrasive cleaners, scour-ing pads, steel wool or caustic(oven) cleaners. They will damagethe cooktop surface.Do not clean the joints between thecooktop frame and countertop orcooktop frame and glass with apointed or sharp object. You maydamage the seal.

^ Clean the cooktop after each use.Using a fresh paper towel will avoidthe possibility of transferring grit fromthe countertop to the cooktop sur-face. Clean cloths or sponges canalso be used.

^ Some spilt liquids (soups, sauces, etc.) may leave a light blue stain onthe cooktop surface. These stainscan be removed using a ceramiccooktop cleaner. They can be stub-born and may require several appli-cations of cleaner.

^ Baked on or hardened spills can becarefully scraped off using a razorblade scraper. Once removed, wipeoff the cooktop with a damp sponge.

^ Metallic lines such as those left bycopper or aluminum pans can be re-moved using a non-abrasive ceramiccooktop cleaner. Let the cooktop coolbefore cleaning.

^ Lime deposits or spots caused bypots boiling over can sometimes beremoved by using a cloth or spongeand white vinegar. Cooktop cleanerscan also be used.

When cleaning the cooktop, makesure the cooktop is "Off", and becareful not to accidentally turn it"On". Placing items on the touchcontrols or rubbing a cloth acrossthem may accidentally activate aburner.

Cleaning and care

19

Removing melted sugar, syrup, plastic or aluminum foilThese items should be removed assoon as possible while the cooktop isstill warm. Scrape the melted item offthe cooktop using a razor bladescraper. Once the cooktop has cooled, remove any remaining residue using aceramic cooktop cleaner.

Using cooktop cleanersSome cleaners incorporate a siliconagent that will leave a protective coat-ing on the cooktop. Although not re-quired, they can also be used. Hightemperatures reduce the effectivenessof these coatings, so they will have tobe reapplied occasionally.

Always follow the manufacturer’sinstructions on the cleaner label. Donot use the cleaner on hot surfaces.

Remove any cleaner residues with adamp sponge before turning on theburner. Failure to do so may causescratches.

Cleaning and care

20

Repairs to the electrical componentsof this appliance should only beperformed by a trained technician.Repairs by unauthorized personnelcould cause personal injury ordamage the cooktop.

Some minor problems can be resolvedas follows:

What if . . .

. . . you notice a slight odor when us-ing the cooktop for the first time?

This is normal. The residual moisture inthe internal insulation is drying out. Theodor should disappear after one or twouses.

. . . a burner will not turn on?

Check to see if the cooktop has been"locked" (see "Locking a burner").

^ Make sure the cooktop is connectedto the main power supply and thatthe circuit breaker has not tripped.

. . . a burner shuts off during use and"H" flashes in the display?

If a burner has been on for an extendedperiod of time, it will automatically shutitself off and flash an "H" in the display. This time will range from 1 to 10 hoursdepending on the setting selected.

To reset the burner:

^ Select "0" first, then select the desiredcooking setting.

An "H" flashing in the display after theburner has been manually shut off isnormal. This is the residual heat indica-tor telling you that the burner is still hot.

. . . food does not cook satisfactorilywhen using the automatic pre-heatfeature?

^ Check that the cooking setting iscorrect for the pans being used andthe items being cooked.

^ If the pots have poor or slow heattransfer qualities, they will take longerto reach cooking temperature thanthe burners. In this case, the potsshould be allowed to heat up beforeplacing the food in them, or a highercooking setting should be chosen.
