Lake Louise“Part of Canada’s glorious Banff National Park, Lake Louise (named for the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria) startles first-time viewers with its extraordinary emerald hue. The coloring results from the runoff of surrounding glaciers, which is filled with a suspension of rock “flour,” created by the inexorable grinding of ice on stone. Aside from inspiring vistas, the region offers an extraordinary range of leisure options. And although summers can be crowded, the area remains one of North America’s classic destinations for outdoor adventure sports.”

Tri-Lakes Region“Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Nestled in the unspoiled Adirondack Mountains in New York State, the village of Lake Placid originally prospered as a mining center. The wealthy discovered it in the 19th century, drawn by its spectacular setting, refreshing clean air and pristine water. Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System of book cataloguing, played a key role in the town, opening the exclusive Lake Placid Club resort, which encouraged the town’s development as a center for winter sports. (Lake Placid stands out in the annals of winter sports as being one of only three places to have hosted two Winter Olympic Games, first in

1932, then in 1980.) Today, few places can match the area’s wealth of year-round recreational activities, which include boating, hiking, biking, golf, both Alpine and Nordic skiing, skating, ski jumping and bobsledding.”

SCENIC DRIVE: Veterans Memorial High-way, the road to the top of Whiteface Mountain, is open until mid-October. What a panorama! There’s a stone castle on top, and you can hike the last 400 feet (or take the elevator).

SWEET TREAT: The snow lasts right into maple sugar season in mid-March, when you can go to the many maple producers and watch the process on the premises. You have to sample the hot syrup on a dish of fresh snow. It’s the best.

SEASONAL ATTRACTION: Foliage comes early to us. In late August we begin seeing little pops of color among the evergreens and soft woods. By mid-September the woods and mountains are beginning to be aflame with color. Peak foliage

for us lasts through mid-October. The woods are

spectacular; they smell wonderful and woodsy.

three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered by water.Luckily, that includes the spectacular lakes Mr. Harper has chosen as some of the planet’s most idyllic destinations. Here’s what makes them special.

Lake Titicaca“Located at an elevation of 12,500 feet in the high Andes, Lake Titicaca is more than 120 miles long and the largest lake in South America. Its many islands include the Isla del Sol, which the Incas believed to be the birthplace of the Sun God. Elsewhere, the pre-Incan Uros people live on artificial floating islands made of reeds. Despite an increase in tourism, Titicaca still seems remote and exotic. In the clear air, and beneath an intense cloudless sky, the colors of the native textiles seem to have an almost

surreal vibrancy. I will never forget my first sight of the Bolivia’s Cordillera Real, a chain of snowcapped mountains that lines the lake’s eastern shore, which contains seven peaks of more than 6,000 meters (19,686 feet) in height, including 21,122-foot Mount Illimani.”

The InsIde scoop

The Andean Experience Co.

HEALTHFUL TIP: Take it easy on the first day. Titicaca is at a very high altitude, and the body needs time to get acclimated.

WORTHY EXCURSION: Going to the island of Taquile to meet the locals and have the privilege of seeing them create extraordinarily beautiful textiles. Then trek across the island to a private beach on the other side. The walking is quite an experience and the sites are unbelievable.

WAY TO UNWIND: My favorite thing is to sit around a bonfire on the shores of the lake at sunset with blankets and local teas and delicacies. Afterward, you can watch the constellations come out.

Argentine Lake District“The capital of the Argentina’s Lake District is the ski resort of San Carlos de Bariloche, which lies 1,000 miles to the southwest of Buenos Aires, close to the Chilean border. The city stands on the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, a cobalt expanse at the center of an eponymous national park. My favorite town in the region, however, is pretty San Martin de los Andes on Lago Lácar. From San Martin, the Camino de los Siete Lagos

(Road of the Seven Lakes) runs for 66 miles south to Villa la Angostura, through some of the most spectacular scenery in Argentina. Along the way, it passes Lago Traful, the source of the Rio Traful, one of the greatest trout streams in the world.”

The InsIde scoop

Courtesy of Carlos Burgoa, general manager,

Llao Llao Hotel & Resort, Golf - Spa

PERFECT TIMING: Autumn is the most scenic season, with all of our flora turning different colors. It’s ideal for scenic tours, photographic walking tours or safaris.

HAPPY HOUR: The beer shops have turned out to be one of the main gastronomic attractions in the last few years, because they develop and produce local beers. I suggest Cervecería Blest and Cervecería Berlina.

DON’T MISS: Sailing on Nahuel Huapi Lake.

Lake District, England“Although the tallest of the hills in England’s Lake District National Park is less than 4,000 feet high, the region’s steep glacial valleys and deep, enigmatic lakes combine in an intensely dramatic and powerful landscape. I have often wondered which of the lakes is my favorite, but I have still failed to decide between Ullswater and Buttermere. Immortalized by Wordsworth and other English Romantic poets, as well as by the painters Constable and Turner, this astonishingly picturesque region is a walker’s paradise. In addition to its natural splendors, you can visit Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage in the village of Grasmere, where Wordsworth spent

the most creative years of his life. After a day’s hiking, I often treat myself to a dinner of Herdwick lamb, a superb local delicacy.”

Salzkammergut Lake District“The Salzkammergut is a mountainous region that lies to the east of the exquisite Austrian city of Salzburg. It is a part of Europe where modernity scarcely seems to have intruded: the landscape is completely unspoiled and the towns are absurdly pretty, with their wooden Alpine houses bedecked with baskets of flowers. The town of Hallstatt on the serene Hallstätter See is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its Iron Age and Celtic cultural remains. My favorite lake, however, is lovely Grundlsee. Nearby Toplitzsee had a particularly colorful history during World War II: As well as

being a Nazi naval weapons research station, the lake became the dumping ground for forged banknotes with which the Germans had hoped to destabilize the British economy. And the salt mines in the surrounding mountains were where Hermann Göring chose to stash many of his looted art treasures.”

Lake Geneva“On a late spring day, when the sun shines and the snow glistens on the distant Alps, there are few more pleasant ways to spend an hour than strolling along Geneva’s Quai du Mont-Blanc, before crossing the bridge into the Jardin Anglais. I love watching the ferries and pleasure craft as they make their way along the northern shore of the lake to Vevey, Lausanne and Montreux. Geneva is such a wealthy, cosmopolitan and fortunate city it can seem, at times, to possess an atmosphere of complete unreality.”

PR & communications manager, Beau-Rivage Palace

LOCAL LEGEND: (Hemmeler) The 13th-century Lausanne Cathedral is very interesting. Its bell tower is home to a mysterious character whose cry of “All’s well” can be heard every night between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. This is the Cathedral’s famous night watchman, who is carrying on a tradition handed down over 600 years.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: (Beugnon) I suggest paragliding on Mont Salève, a mountain shared between France and Switzerland. From your flight, you can see Mont Blanc and all of Geneva.

COMING SOON: (Hemmeler) Lausanne is an official Olympic city and hosts the Olympic Museum, which is reopening later this year after a huge renovation.

Rift Valley Lakes“Africa’s Great Rift Valley — the result of two divergent tectonic plates — extends for more than 3,000 miles, but it is the East African Rift that attracts the most visitors. There, a succession of lakes sustains a bewildering array of wildlife. Kenya’s Lake Nakuru is home to more than a million greater and lesser flamingoes, while to the south, Lake Naivasha can boast more than 400 resident bird species, as well as a huge hippo population. My own most memorable wildlife experience, however, was watching the habituated troops of chimpanzees that live in the Mahale Mountains National Park on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika.”

Lake Como“Italy’s three great Alpine lakes — Como, Garda and Maggiore — are all exquisitely pretty, but my favorite has long been Lake Como. On occasions its waters are bathed in a pinkish, opalescent light that endows them with an ethereal, fairytale quality. The area has had irresistible appeal since Roman times and, in the late 18th century, it was a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour. Each generation falls in love all over again: today, George Clooney has a villa

in the lakeside town of Laglio, keeping the region’s glamor current. Every time I visit Como, I conclude that few places in the world are more beautiful or more profoundly civilized.”

The InsIde scoop

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

WET AND WILD: Lake Como is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Water skiing, wakeboarding, Jet Skiing, sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and fishing are just a few of the many diversions.

DINNER AND A SHOW: For something different, I suggest having lunch at Locanda dell’Isola Comacina and listening to all the stories of Benvenuto, the funny owner who since 1947 has served the same fixed-price menu and has made an elaborate “exorcism by fire” ceremony at the end of every meal. It stems from a curse supposedly laid on the island in 1169 by the Bishop of Como and involves, essentially, coffee with flambéed liqueur.

LOCAL TREASURE: Villa del Balbianello is famous worldwide for being the set of many Hollywood movies, and is literally one of the most dramatic locations on Lake Como, if not the world. Its sculpted gardens seem to drip off the high promontory like sauce off a melting ice cream cone.

Lake Pichola“Lake Pichola is an artificial lake that was created in 1362 at the edge of Udaipur, a magnificent city of golden sandstone, located in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Originally it was conceived as a source of water for drinking and irrigation, but soon the lake became the exquisite setting for lavish palaces constructed by successive maharanas. The view from the island of Jag Mandir, back to the famous Lake Palace and the great City Palace of Udaipur, is quite simply one of most beautiful in the world. Every time I return, I find myself moved to tears.”

HOUSE CALL: Be sure to visit the unfinished Monsoon Palace, conceived by Maharana Sajjan Singh but never completed due to his untimely death. One can enjoy soaring views of Udaipur, the beautiful City of Lakes.

NATURE CALLS: Lake Pichola is a bird- watcher’s paradise, as a large number of migratory birds make their way here from colder climes.

Inle LakeRecent political changes in Burma have engendered a great deal of optimism and a surge in the number of foreign visitors. But travel to the country has always been possible, subject to restrictions, and I first visited Inle Lake in Shan State more than 25 years ago. There, the 70,000 Intha people live in bamboo houses constructed on stilts, and they cultivate remarkable floating gardens of fruit and vegetables. Local fishermen employ fragile wooden rowing boats and large, conical bamboo fish traps. In the dawn mist, the scene is reminiscent of a Japanese scroll painting.

West Lake, Hangzhou “Although the Chinese city of Hangzhou now has a population of more than six million, its famous West Lake remains pretty, tranquil and clean. It is possible to walk, jog or cycle around much of the shoreline, pausing on the willow-shaded paths to gaze out across the expanse of glassy water. Here, China’s ancient civilization remains very much alive. Sometimes, I rent one of the numerous leisure craft for an idyllic private cruise. Hangzhou has always been a prosperous city, thanks to the silk trade and its proximity to the Grand Canal. These days, however, the city enjoys a reputation as the most affluent in the entire country, where the newly wealthy of Shanghai buy hillside properties overlooking the lake, a combination of mountains and water which is said to possess especially potent feng shui, or mysteriously auspicious power.”

PERFECT TIMING: Spring and autumn both enjoy moderate and comfortable climates, though spring tends to be rather wet. Spring is the season of tea picking and autumn is the season of osmanthus and autumn delicacies.

CULTURAL APPRECIATION: Hangzhou was praised by Marco Polo as the most beautiful city in the world. Being one of the ancient capitals, it has developed itself as a center of commerce, art and culture for centuries.

GO GREEN: Hangzhou is often celebrated as the greenest city in China. Here, appreciation and consciousness for nature is deeply rooted in people’s lives. We enjoy visiting the Botanical Garden, parks and scenic areas, and walking through bamboo forests to reach temples and village teahouses.

Lake Wakatipu“Located in the Queenstown District of New Zealand’s South Island, Lake Wakatipu is justly renowned for its breathtaking scenic splendor, its southeastern shore being dominated by The Remarkables, a chain of jagged, snow-covered mountains. The area provided a backdrop to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and from the village of Glenorchy at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, one can see the northwestern slopes of Mount Earnslaw, which were featured in the opening sequence of The Two Towers. From Glenorchy, one also can discover Lothlorien, the beech forest on the road to Paradise. The most popular way to tour the lake, however, is aboard the T.S.S. Earnslaw, a vintage paddle steamer, complete with a white hull, kauri timber decks and a bright-red 36-foot funnel.”

OUTDOOR FUN: The quintessential Kiwi summer activity, a rope swing into chilly waters, is high on the list of favorite things to do — kids love it! So is bungee jumping and taking a dip in the Kawarau River, which feeds out of Wakatipu. Lots of folks go out there just to watch the action. Backcountry fishing is also a great pastime.

ROAD TRIP: A drive up the lake to Glenorchy and back offers spectacular views. And the bakery in Glenorchy has the best meat pies I’ve ever seen. Drive the other direction towards Kingston at the southern end, and 25 minutes out of Queenstown you can walk down a rugged track to a deserted beach. Take a picnic and enjoy the sounds of silence.

GET AIRBORNE: We send a lot of guests heli-sightseeing. There’s no better way to view the beautiful Wakatipu basin, right out to Milford Sound and the west coast World Heritage areas.

Of all the wine grape vari-eties, Pinot Noir argu-ably inspires the most passion. A great Pinot Noir delivers a profound experience bordering on

the sublime, but discovering that great Pinot can be a tricky business. Condi-tions have to be just right for it to develop into its full potential, and even then, there’s no guarantee. It’s a testament to the seductive power of Pinot Noir wines that we return to them again and again in spite of their temperamental nature. Perhaps the variety speaks to something deep and ancient within us. The Oxford Companion to Wine suggests that Pinot Noir is “in all probability a selection from wild vines made by mankind at least two millennia ago.” Two thousand years of cultivation has yet to completely extin-guish Pinot’s wild origins, and it remains willful to this day.

“The Oxford Companion to Wine” rightly notes that “Wherever there is a wine producer with a palate, there will be experimentation with Pinot Noir,” but only a handful of wine regions truly excel at producing Pinot today. Many would argue, and we would agree, that the greatest Pinot Noir comes from Burgundy in northeastern France. Pinot Noir has thrived there for a millennium or more, and today, Burgundy’s Pinot Noirs (as well as Chardonnays) continue to set the bar for the rest of the world. It’s therefore easy to forget that a certain neighboring wine region grows even more Pinot Noir than Burgundy: Champagne. But here, of course, almost all of the Pinot Noir juice ends up in sparkling wine, either in blends or in varietal Blanc de Noir, perhaps the most romantic of all Champagnes.

New-World wine regions have started to give Burgundy and Champagne some serious competition, however, crafting different but unquestionably delightful Pinot Noirs of their own. In the United States, Oregon’s Willamette Valley has built its entire reputation on Pinot, pro-ducing exciting, fruit-forward wines with no shortage of power. According to The World Atlas of Wine, “this lush, pastoral country can do what California has found next to impossible: conjure up the illu-sion of drinking fine red burgundy, even if Oregon Pinots are in general softer, more obviously fruity and earlier matur-ing than their European counterparts.”

On the opposite side of the globe from Burgundy, New Zealand has also made a name for itself with its delicious Pinot Noirs, along with its better-known zesty Sauvignon Blancs. In fact, The Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia asserts that “New Zealand’s isolation and cool, maritime climate make it the most exciting place on earth for wine.” And there is no ques-tion that it contains some of the most scenically spectacular wine countries in the world to visit, with vineyards back-dropped by snow-capped mountain peaks and pristine lakes.

Drinking a great Pinot Noir is always a pleasure, but drinking one in the place it was made is another matter entirely. To experience top Pinot Noirs to their fullest potential, there is no substitute for trav-eling to where they were produced. For those who have been seduced, as we have, by the enduring charms of Pinot Noir, the Travel Office has assembled three recom-mended itineraries, one for each of our three favorite Pinot regions.

In Pursuit of PINOT NOIR

from the travel office SAMPLE ITINERARIES

“It’s a hard grape to grow, as you know.Right? It’s thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It’s not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and thrive even when it’s neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot’s potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they’re just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet.”

FRANCE

DAY 1

Arrive in Paris and pick up a rental car at the airport, or meet your private car and driver. Drive 90 minutes to Reims, the capital of the Champagne region. In the afternoon, explore the historic core including the gothic cathedral, famously painted by Monet. Have dinner in the ca-sual and contemporary Jardin Brasserie, housed in an outbuilding on the grounds of the Château les Crayères.

DAY 2

Visit Maison Pommery, which ages its elegant, delicate Champagnes in im-mense chalk caverns initially carved by Romans. Make a day trip south, visit-ing the grand cru Pinot Noir vineyards around Aÿ and stopping in the town itself for a tasting at Gosset, a venerable Champagne house dating back to the 16th century. Continue on to Epernay and stroll the Avenue de Champagne, visiting Moët & Chandon, or even better,

Pol Roger. Return to Reims, and depend-ing on your preference, enjoy one or two more Champagne tastings at Ruinart, Ta-ittinger, Louis Roederer, Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin or Krug. Dine tonight in the opulent Michelin two-star dining room of the Château les Crayères.

DAY 3

Drive three hours south to Burgundy, stopping for a casual lunch en route. Check into your hotel in the heart of Bur-gundy, near the lovingly preserved town of Beaune. Take the afternoon to relax and enjoy the amenities of your hotel in the countryside, and dine in its Michelin-starred restaurant this evening.

DAY 4

Take the morning to explore gracious Beaune, visiting the Hôtel Dieu, a his-toric charity hospital and the site of the Hospices de Beaune wine auction. Lunch on the terrace of Le Jardin des Remparts, along the ancient city wall. In the afternoon, visit the atmospheric

Marché aux Vins for a broad overview of Burgundian wines. Secure your tastevin and work your way through the candlelit cellars, pouring yourself tastes of 10 or 12 top-flight wines, including Premiers and Grands Crus. Dine tonight in the opulent dining room of Le Clos de Cèdre, or re-turn to your hotel for dinner.

DAY 5

Begin your explorations of the Côte d’Or in earnest, visiting the Premier Cru vine-yards of Volnay, Pommard and Beaune. We can help with appointments at the

wineries of your choice, or make recom-mendations. If an entire day of wine tasting is overkill, take the morning to ex-plore the dramatic 13th-century Château de la Rochepot.

DAY 6

Check out of your hotel and drive to nearby Dijon. Spend the day sightsee-ing in this pretty half-timbered city, taking a break for lunch at renowned Le Pré aux Clercs. Drive back south to Chambolle-Musigny and check into an elegant townhouse, which boasts its own

impressive wine cellar. The hotel will be happy to conduct a wine tasting in its barrel-vaulted tasting room, or you can simply relax in its salons or gardens. Have a light dinner in town at La Maison Vi-gneronne, a relaxed restaurant in a stone house serving Burgundian cuisine with a modern twist.

DAY 7

Spend the day exploring the Côte de Nu-its, home to Burgundy’s top Pinot Noirs. Tour the Château du Clos de Vougeot, built between the 12th and 16th centu-ries. This famous château now serves as the home of the banquets of the Confrè-rie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, a brother-hood dedicated to the wines and culture of Burgundy. In storied Vougeot itself, en-joy a wine tasting at Domaine Bertagna, which produces five Grands Crus and seven Premiers Crus. Drive to Gevrey-Chambertin, and taste several local vintages over a wine-focused lunch at La Table de Pierre Bourée. Turn back south and head to legendary Vosne-Romanée for a tasting at Domaine Armelle et Ber-nard Rion. Return to your hotel to relax before dinner at nearby Le Clos Prieur in the Château de Gilly. This restaurant, set in a dramatic 14th-century vaulted cellar, offers more than 600 different wines.

DAY 8

Return your rental car at the Dijon air-port, fly to Paris and connect to your flight home. Alternatively, return your car near the Dijon rail station and take the train back to Paris to spend a few days in the capital.

OREGON

DAY 1

Arrive in Portland and check into your hotel. Relax, browse the upscale bou-tiques in Nob Hill and stroll through the hip Pearl District, home to Metrovino. This bar offers 90 wines by the glass, in-cluding a range of fine local Pinot Noirs. Flights allow you to compare top Pinots from Oregon, California and France.

30 | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 ANDREWHARPER.COM

DAY 2

Spend some time enjoying Portland’s im-pressive gardens. The Japanese Garden is one of the best anywhere, the adjacent International Rose Test Garden show-cases approximately 400 varieties or roses across five colorful acres, and the traditional Lan Su Chinese Garden is the largest of its kind outside China. If you visit on a weekend, don’t miss the Port-land Saturday Market (also held on Sun-day), a perfect place to find unique gifts and delectable treats. In the afternoon, relax over some glasses of wine at Oregon Wines on Broadway, which has 30 differ-ent Oregon Pinot Noirs by the glass.

DAY 3

Pick up a rental car and drive an hour south (depending on traffic) to the verdant Willamette Valley. Mr. Harper describes the scene: “The wineries are mostly small and family-owned ven-tures offering unpretentious but care-fully crafted wines. Tasting rooms have sprouted in former granaries and brick storefronts. And even the tiniest hamlet seems to have at least one fine chef-owned restaurant with a wine-friendly menu featuring local produce.” Have lunch at Cuvée in tiny Carlton (open for lunch Saturdays and Sundays), and visit the nearby tasting room of Ken Wright Cellars. En route to your hotel, stop for tastings at Beaux Freres and Penner-Ash. For dinner tonight, head to the casual Red Hills Provincial Dining, housed in a 1920s Craftsman bungalow.

DAY 4

Ascend in a hot-air balloon early this morning, for unforgettable views over the entire valley (a delicious breakfast is included). After you come back to earth, head to the town of McInnville to visit the fascinating Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, which houses the infa-mous Spruce Goose airplane. Nearby, the superlative Panther Creek has a tasting room well worth a visit. Start making your way back to your hotel, stopping at Domaine Drouhin en route for its revealing “Drouhin Experience” tasting, which compares wines from Oregon and Burgundy. Dine this evening in the more formal Painted Lady Restaurant.

DAY 5

After exploring the galleries in down-town Newberg this morning, visit the tasting room of Bergström, which makes a number of fine single-vineyard Pinots. Continue on to Dundee and the Dobbes Family Estate. We recommend booking an “Exceptionelle” tasting in the reserve suite, which includes top wines accom-panied by local gourmet appetizers. The nearby tasting room of Argyle serves well-crafted sparkling wines. Back at the hotel, indulge in a wine-themed spa treatment before dinner.

DAY 6

Depart the Willamette Valley. Return to the Portland airport (about two hours north), or head to the dramatic Oregon coast, spending some time in Depoe Bay and Cannon Beach before circling back to Portland.

NEW ZEALANDDAY 1

Arrive this morning on New Zealand’s north island in the capital of Wellington. Transfer the short distance to the helipad, and take a scenic flight over the Rimu-taka Ranges and out over the dramatic Palliser Bay. Touch down on the lawn of your lodge, where you are greeted with a glass of Champagne, and check into your

accommodations. Take the afternoon to settle in and explore the picturesque grounds.

DAY 2

With a driver, head an hour northeast to Martinborough, the North Island’s top region for Pinot Noir. It was here that New Zealand first gained a reputation for producing world-class Pinots. A number of wineries cluster close to the town of Martinborough itself, including the ex-cellent Ata Rangi, Palliser Estate, Te Kai-ranga and Escarpment. Your guide can introduce you to local winemakers and help arrange behind-the-scenes tours.

DAY 3

Continue exploring the area around Pal-liser Bay, going for a scenic hike, horse-back riding, visiting New Zealand’s largest fur seal colony or enjoying a spa treatment.

DAY 4

Take a quick 30-minute flight from Wel-lington to Blenheim on the South Island of New Zealand, and check into your luxury lodge. Enjoy a wine tasting at the adjacent Spy Valley Winery, and take the rest of the afternoon to relax.

DAY 5

The town of Nelson is less than 90 min-utes away, and it boasts a rich arts and crafts scene. Go gallery hopping, and then visit the acclaimed Neudorf and Greenhough wineries, among others. Re-turn to your lodge in the mid-afternoon for some time at leisure.

DAY 6

Spend today touring the wineries of Blen-heim, including the renowned Mount Riley, Vavasour and Seresin wineries. If you prefer to mix in additional activities besides wine tastings, you could play a round of golf at idyllic Fairhall, tour some private Marlborough gardens, visit an ol-ive grove or walk part of the sensationally scenic Queen Charlotte Track.

DAY 7

Fly an hour from Blenheim to Christ-church, and transfer to a serene historic Pinot Noir grape harvest, Willamette Valley, Oregon

manor house set amid formal gardens. Tour the estate’s gardens, and take a pri-vate cooking class with the executive chef.

DAY 8

Head an hour north of Christchurch to the rolling Waipara wine region, a clas-sic area for growing Pinot Noir. Visit the Waipara West winery, and have lunch and a wine tasting at nearby Pegasus Bay, one of the top wineries in the country. After a tasting at Muddy Water and any other wineries you might like to visit, return to the manor house.

DAY 9

Today you could spend in any number of exciting ways. You might ride the Tranz-Scenic railway through the Waimak-ariri river gorge and into the heart of the Southern Alps, golf in the foothills of the Southern Alps at Terrace Downs, visit Kaituna Valley winery and the sea-side town of Akaroa, or take a private helicopter tour of the area’s dramatic and unspoiled landscapes.

DAY 10

Depart Christchurch and head to the “action-adventure capital” of New Zea-land, Queenstown, which also happens to be near some of the world’s most spectacularly beautiful wine country. To reach Queenstown, you can either take an hour-long flight or a breathtakingly scenic six-hour drive. Mr. Harper recom-mends a number of hotels in the area, both in the city and in the countryside just out of town, depending on your pref-erence. Time permitting, take a leisurely lake cruise this afternoon, or just relax and enjoy your hotel.

DAY 11

Spend today tasting wine in the southern-most wine region on the planet. Start with dramatically sited Chard Farm, and continue on to Two Paddocks, owned by actor and Pinot fan Sam Neill. After lunch and a tasting at Mt. Difficulty, taste wines at renowned Felton Road and Ols-sens. Return to Queenstown in the late afternoon.

DAY 12

You are transferred by private vehicle to the helipad for a Milford Sound helicop-ter excursion with a glacier landing. Your flight sweeps through the Southern Alps, over the secluded alpine lakes and lush forest of the Fiordland National Park. Fly the full length of the fiord before reach-ing the rugged West Coast, with several landings en route. Your flight concludes in Glenorchy where you embark an ex-clusive Dart River jet boat “safari.” Skim through the braided channels of the magnificent Dart River with an optional short walk to hidden rock pools deep within in the spectacular Mount Aspiring National Park, a World Heritage site. Fol-lowing your jet boat adventure, you are transferred back to Queenstown by road, a scenic one-hour drive along the edge of Lake Wakatipu.

DAY 13

Transfer to the Queenstown airport for your two-hour flight to Auckland, where you connect to your flight home.

La MirandeAVIGNON, FRANCE – Set at the foot of a grand historic palace in the heart of Avignon

in southeastern France, this private mansion hotel-restaurant is the epitome of timeless

elegance. Originally a cardinal’s palace in the 14th century, the building was originally

restored to create a hotel in the 17th century. Today, its Age of Enlightenment style extends

throughout the living spaces, restaurant and 27 guest rooms combining modern comforts

with 18th-century décor.

Fresh and creative cuisine with a Provençal touch is the basis for

the culinary offerings. Chef Jean-Claude Aubertin produces authentic,

traditional French cuisine with an emphasis on the freshest seasonal

ingredients. The restaurant’s warm and inviting setting is accented

by friendly, attentive staff and a carefully chosen selection of wines—

resulting in an unforgettable gourmet experience.

On select nights and for private occasions, the chef’s table offers

modern cuisine in a medieval setting, La Mirande’s basement, which

holds up to 14 guests. The acclaimed Le Marmiton onsite cooking

school hosts the region’s greatest chefs, who share their recipes and

techniques; guests are invited to join in preparing and enjoying a meal

accompanied by wines chosen by the sommelier. Tea time is held daily

in the glass-covered patio or on the terrace, and the stately bar strives

to meet the highest expectations. All combine to create an authentic

French source of simple, noble, endless pleasure.

Recommended since 1993.

Andrew Harper Benefits: preferred rates; an upgrade, when available at check-in; daily buffet breakfast served at the restaurant or in room; a cooking class per room (Tuesdays and Wednesdays only, does not include meal); and fresh fruit.

Standard Inclusions: Rates include taxes, service, Wi-Fi and daily newspaper.

M any people time their vaca-tions to coincide with the most favorable weather con-

ditions or with long holiday weekends. Who doesn’t want pleasantly warm, sunny days and to take advantage of the extra time off over Labor Day and Memo-rial Day? Unfortunately, traveling during peak seasons carries a price. Airlines and hotels charge premium rates, and top sights and restaurants can become frus-tratingly overcrowded with tourists.

For many of us in the Travel Office, avoiding the crowds is worth packing a jacket or umbrella (usually a good idea in any case), especially when cultural experi-ences are the focus. Whether or not you have a reserved entry, the world’s great art museums are far more enjoyable when you’re not fighting your way through tour groups to see the paintings. And we would much rather stand atop the Eiffel Tower while wearing a stylish scarf than wait in an interminable line underneath it while

wearing shorts. Sometimes in the off-season, you might even discover you have a major attraction entirely to yourself. One travel consultant related how on a sunny and pleasantly cool January day in Sicily, she sat entirely alone in Taormina’s ancient Greco-Roman amphitheater and watched the sun set behind Mount Etna. Breathtak-ing experiences like that you never forget.

H ere are some tips to get the most out of a vacation outside the busiest season: When planning

any journey (especially one that’s in the off-season), if there is an attraction or restaurant you are determined to visit, double-check that it will be open during your planned stay.

CONSULT THE CLIMATE INFORMATION IN

THE HARPER COLLECTION. In addition to weather averages, which tell you what to expect during a given month, Mr. Harper usually offers advice about which months offer the best combination of pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds.

KEEP IN MIND THAT IN MANY CASES, AN

AREA’S REPUTATION FOR BAD WEATHER IS

OVERBLOWN. Chicago’s winters are no worse than Boston’s or New York’s. Parts of Canada are warm enough for world-class wine regions to develop. And though a rainy season may sound daunting, check the details. In many cases, rainy seasons manifest themselves as short afternoon downpours with plenty of sun before and after.

TRY SOMETHING NEW. The Travel Office receives countless calls from people who want to travel to beach resorts over the winter holidays, which inevitably book up well in advance. Instead, why not take advantage of Europe’s festive Christmas markets, the charming colonial cities of Mexico or the desert resorts in America’s Southwest?

EVEN CRUISES HAVE SHOULDER-SEASON

ITINERARIES (BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW

SEASON) WHICH TEND TO BE LESS

CROWDED AND LESS EXPENSIVE. Cruising the Mediterranean in early May or mid-October is just as delightful – if not more so – than cruising it in July or August.

THE OFF-SEASON CAN BE AN IDEAL TIME

FOR SHOPPING. In many North American and European cities, the best sales take place in January and again in July and August.

ALL THAT SAID, SOMETIMES TRAVELING IN

THE HEIGHT OF THE SEASON IS ALMOST

UNAVOIDABLE. Taking an Alaskan cruise, for example, can only be accomplished in the summer or early fall, and Antarctica can only be tackled during the northern hemisphere’s winter.

36 | OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 ANDREWHARPER.COM

“Keep in mind that in many cases, an area’s reputation for bad weather is overblown.”

“...Sometimes traveling in the height of the season is almost unavoidable.”

“...Avoiding the crowds is worth packing a jacket or umbrella.”

Lynn Garrison has circled the globe countless times and loves highlighting new discoveries for our guests at every stop. With more than 20 years of experience, she’s learned a thing or two about life on the road and kindly shares her travel advice with us.

I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT MY

TO OT H B RU S H A N D M Y P I L LOWS.

It makes all the difference with the different hotel rooms we are in and en-sures I get a good night’s rest.

ON MY FIRST TCS EXPEDITION, I rode with the luggage in a truck covered with a tarp through the desert in Jordan. We left the Aqaba airport as the sun was setting and arrived in Wadi Musa four hours later. My driver, Muhammad, did not speak English, and I did not speak Arabic. It was an amazing adventure, and it made me fall in love with Arabic music and the Middle East.

A PLACE I THOUGHT I’D DISLIKE, BUT I FELL

IN LOVE WITH WAS CHINA. [It] wasn’t my favorite country, but it is growing on me. And I know there are many treasures there I have yet to experience.

MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PLACE IN THE

WORLD IS IMPOSSIBLE TO NAME. I think Africa is my favorite continent. India is probably the most interesting country—so full of color and contrasts. Bali is gor-geous, and I love how art plays such a big role in its culture.

ONE PLACE I HAVEN’T SEEN YET, which I’m dying to visit is the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari Desert in Africa.

THE ONE MOMENT FROM MY TRAVELS THAT I

WILL NEVER, EVER FORGET WAS this one time in Bariloche, Argentina, when we went to an island in the lake and helped the children plant trees. These kids were unbelievable in who they already were and who they were becoming. It was so gratifying and humbling at the same time.

IF I HADN’T BEEN AN EXPEDITION LEADER, I

WOULD HAVE BEEN MISERABLE. Actually, I would have continued doing my on-site logistic work for corporate meetings, incentives and sporting events, which I very much enjoy. But these trips have allowed me to see the world, open my mind further, meet great folks, and be in a leadership and team position that I love.

I GOT MY LOVE OF TRAVEL FROM MY GRAND-

MOTHER AND MOTHER. Grandmom had a coin collection from various countries around the world, and I would get out the globe and match the coins to the countries. My mom bought the Time/Life series books and National Geographic travel books—and I always gravitated toward them. I also have to say that Mu-tual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom had me wanting to go to Africa as long as I can remember.

MY BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE IS BE

FLEXIBLE AND BE OPEN TO RECEIVE. Always treat others with kindness and courtesy.

Lynn Garrison is the expedition leader on TCS & Starquest’s Oceania trip, which travels to Hawaii, Moorea, New Zealand, Tasmania, Australia, Borneo and Pentecost Island and departs March 2014.
