The Government’s decision to sell it’s stake in AerLingus to IAG may be weeks away, according toMinister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe. Thiscomes as the airline reported a loss of €48 millionduring the first three month of this year. In themeantime, Aer Lingus’ bidder, IAG reported a quar-terly profit for the first time, helped by lower fuelcosts and an improvement in performance acrossit’s three airlines. IAG , which is in the process ofacquiring Aer Lingus, reported an underlying oper-ating profit of €25 for the year ended on 31st March. This compares with a loss of €150 million made lastyear and an analyst forecast loss of €3 million. Fuelcosts were down by 11 per cent, which IAG claim washelped by more efficient aircraft. Meanwhile AerLingus chief, Stephen Kavanagh reiterated theairline’s support for for the IAG takeover, saying thatit would deliver “significant benefits for all AerLingus stakeholders,” he said. The airline reportedthat it’s revenue rose by 7.9 per cent to €280 millionin the first three months o this year, spurred on by astrong performance in it’s long-haul business, whereas it’s short-haul business remains chal-lenging. Kavanagh also revealed that he’ll unveilnew cost-cutting measures later this year.

Continued from page 1The great news is that Professor McElvanney hasdecided to set up a scholarship under Elaine'sname, which has pleased Keith no end. "We didn'tknow what they were going to do with the money, but it was brilliant to know that he was setting upthis scholarship under her name, "The ElaineGalwey Scholarship." Keith has decided to continuewith the gruelling 'Hell and Back' run this year, andElaine sister, Suzanne came up with this socialmedia campaign, similar to the Ice Bucket chal-lenge, which caught the imagination of people allover the world last year. "It's called 'Slurp for CF'which involves getting a drink, any kind, be it tea.water or beer. The idea is that you take a big loudslurp from your drink and then you nominate asmany people to take the slurp and then text Slurp to50300, which donates €2 to Cystic Fibrosis HopeSource. We're hoping to raise as much awarenessand funds as possible." said Keith.

Swords Students CrownedBond Trader Champions

Students from Loreto Secondary School inSwords recently scooped the top prize in amajor banking competition. They fended off stiff competition from 200students from across Leinster to claim firstplace in the Bank of Ireland Bond Trader chal-lenge. Held in the Aviva Stadium, students inteams of five took part in the Bond TraderChallenge, responding to real market scenariosand making decisions on how to manage theirown bond portfolio. The Loreto team of AiméeO’Toole, Laura Sludds, Nicola Kelly, KathrynAnderson and Sarah Gerrard swept all beforethem, winning the Bond Trader evening. The Loreto students took home a selection ofprizes, including the Bond Trader WinnersTrophy, a signed Leinster jersey for the school,iPads and Leinster jerseys for the team. Teacher, Aoife O’Reilly a past pupil herself, told the County Leader that it was a very toughcompetition and the girls were brilliant in howthey coped with each question, which relatedto a real-life situation,” she said.

The students were given a different scenario todeal with and some were very tough. Whenchallenged to predict how markets would reactto a surprise cut in the European Central Bankinterest rates, the girls from Loreto Swordscorrectly predicted that the price of long-datedbonds would increase and stock marketswould receive a boost. In another difficult scenario, the teams werechallenged to place shares after news thatviolent protests had erupted in Saudi Arabia, with the government putting tanks on thestreets. Once again, the Loreto girls did well byfleeing to safety and dumped shares in favourof long-dated bonds, seen as a refuge ineconomic turmoil.School principal, Peter McNamara was veryproud of the girls, saying they were a credit totheir families and to the school. “They camefrom nowhere to win the event, having beenplaced fourth at one stage, but they came outwith a tremendous last round to win the day,”he said.

Old age comes to all ofus if we are lucky enoughto survive infancy, puberty, marriage and allthe other traumatic anddramatic events whichcan occur whilst travel-ling the pathway of life.Old age is a terminalillness, just like any otherlife threatening illness, but it is only in recentyears that this fact hasbeen recognised andtreated as a Specialitysubject, in its own right,by the medical profes-sion. This has not

always been the caseand we are just fortunateto live in an era where oldage is treated with thedignity and respect itdeserves, at least fromthe Medical and Nursingprofessions.Last weekend, the eighthCongress of the WorldAssociation ofGerontology andGeriatrics was held inDublin. The Taoiseach,Enda Kenny opened theConference and gave avery moving, thoughtprovoking and insightful

welcome address to thedelegates present.Perhaps he is alsopreparing for old age!! Itis very heartening for allprofessionals engaged inthe lifelong specialistCare of Older People inour community, to berecognised and valuedfor the service theyprovide. Many olderpeople still have acultural fear of nursinghomes which dates backto the 19th and early partof the last century, whenthe County Homes were

a tragic feature of abjectpoverty and consequentlack of even basic humancare on the Irish land-

scape. Nowadays, theNursing Homes industryin Ireland is one of themost highly regulated ofall industries in thecountry and as a result, the majority of CareCentres are of a very highstandard in terms ofnursing care, appearanceand comfort. Statisticsshow that less than 4.5per cent of the Irishpopulation aged 65 yearsand over are living inNursing Homes. Olderpeople who live inNursing Homes arepeople, who because oftheir advanced mentaland physical condition, are unable to live athome. Neither are theysuitable to live in theacute hospital setting, once their acute medicalcondition has beentreated. Home isalmost always thepreferred option for mostpeople and if all nursingcare needs are met, together with generousdaily care input by thefamily involved is avail-able, home is also thebest outcome for theolder person. Care in thecommunity, withoutgenerous and committedinput from the family canbe disastrous for theolder person. It is also afact that older people, once they settle in anursing home love thenursing care, security, dignity and kindnessthey experience. It isalso a fact that familieswho experience thisspecial care and atten-tion, shown unremit-tingly to their loved ones, also sincerely appreciateit. Most people over theage of 75 do not want toleave their home whenthey are no longer able totake care of themselves. Many see it as a loss oftheir independence andan invasion of privacy. This leaves their childrenwith the question of howto take care of their lovedones. Old people mightfall, forget to take theirmedicine or simply needassistance in their dailyroutine. Luckily there area number of optionswhich are available, so

that your loved ones canenjoy their twilight yearsin the safety and securityof their own homes.

In-Home Care

A care giving profes-sional assists the elderlyperson with daily activi-ties, such as bathing, dressing, eating andwalking. A care giver canprovide assistance withother daily tasks, so thatthe person is able toremain in their home, oroffer family members abreak from caring fortheir loved ones. Thereare ways to make thechange easier: you canstart gradually by havingthe care giver come onlyfor a few hours a week.Furthermore, you shouldinvolve your loved one inchoosing the aide. Agood carer can be ofinvaluable help to theelderly person, in asmuch as they providecompany and conversa-tion, which is vital inkeeping people activeand alert. Sometimes themere presence ofsomeone to listen can bepriceless to elderlypeople, who can becomelonely and depressedotherwise

Gadgets

To make a home safer, there are a number ofthings that need to beattended to. To avoidaccidents it is absolutelyimportant that all themain areas of the homehave proper lighting. This includes allentrances and even thebackyard. The entranceshould always be safe. You should also makesure that they arebarrier-free so thatsomeone in a wheelchairor someone who hastrouble climbing stepswill be able to pass. Ifthe entrance includes astep you can use a rampin order to make itbarrier-free. Anotherroom that needs to becomfortable is the bath-room. You should startby installing grab bars. Moreover, you can lowerthe bathroom sink, install an elevated toilet and built a roll-in shower.

There’sa great tradition andethos of acceptanceand inclusion here andI cannot think of amore worthy school toreceive funding tofurther expand thegreat teaching thatgoes on here,” he said.He also recognised thewonderful opportunitythat will accrue to theconstruction industry,as a result of theSummer Worksscheme, as an impor-tant boost for the

Minister’s Delight At Funding For Milverton School

It seems that the Greek FinanceMinister, Yanis Varoufakis reallyupset his Eurozone colleagues as hecontinued to express his anger attheir lack of flexibility and hisgeneral dismissal of the austeritysolutions, promoted by those“bailing out” his country. Inresponse, Greek Prime MinisterAlexis Tsipras began calling EUleaders personally and moved thenegotiations lead from Varoufakis toDeputy Foreign Minister EuclidTsakalotosin, in an apparent move toease tensions as his country desper-ately struggles to survive the crisis. His Foreign Minister suggested thatGermany seems to wish to “make anexample” of a Left Wing Government, which is not following the establish-ment line. He went so far as to warnthat if a solution is not found, theextreme Right in the form of Golden

Dawn is waiting in the wings. Itseems that while the Governmentstill has the support of the Greekpeople who have shown in opinionpolls that they want a solution foundwith the bond holders. The view onthe street seems to be “stay in butget a deal”. It will be difficult forTsipras to achieve this as he appearsbound by his election promises. Thequestion now asked is: has the ECBbegun preparing for a Greek exitfrom the Euro and EU? All sourcessay no, the EU and ECB would neverresort to such indirect blackmail.Notwithstanding, it must bedisturbing for Greeks that the Italiandaily La Stampa report that Plan B isunder discussion by the ECB andGermany. Under this plan, TsiprasGovernment would be replaced by atechnocratic cabinet which wouldallow Greece to default withoutleaving the Eurozone. EU Economicand Monetary Affairs CommissionerPierre Moscovici told El País, “Withor without Varoufakis, Greece’sproblem remains the same: Athensmust present a conclusive list ofreforms, and quickly. There’s no timeto waste.”

Call For ReinstatementOf Swords CommunityPolicing Forum Swords councillor, Paul Mulville (NP) has calledfor the Swords Community Policing Forum to bereinstated. Mulville stated, “I’ve received manyrepresentations regarding policing issues in theSwords, Portrane and Donabate areas. The localcommunity policing forum was a good start inbuilding links between the localcommunity and An Garda Síochána,and in helping to address localpolicing issues.”He continued, “Before the communitypolicing forum was scrapped, it held anumber of useful public meetingsaround Swords. Indeed it was hopedthat the scheme, which included theBalbriggan Community Policing

Forum, would have been extended toallow a Donabate Portrane CommunityPolicing Forum be set up. TheCommunity Policing Forum staff had beenworking on this when it was wound up,due to lack of funds.” “I am now callingon Minister for Justice and Equality,Frances Fitzgerald, TD, to put in placefunding to allow the Swords andBalbriggan Community Policing be re-

established, and the Donabate Portrane CommunityPolicing Forum to be set up,” he concluded.

Minister To VoiceDonabate Residents’Concerns To HSELocal TD Alan Farrell (FG) raised his oppositionto construction vehicles using the bridge into, and out of Donabate for the construction of theNational Forensic Mental Hospital on thegrounds of St. Ita’s Hospital in Portranewith the Minister for Health, LeoVaradkar in Dáil Éireann.“I am strongly opposed to construction

vehicles using the bridge into, and out ofDonabate village. Should these vehiclesbe allowed to use this route, they willpass nearby schools, residential areas, and sports centres and clubs. I believethat this proposal may inadvertently put thesafety of local residents and children at risk,”Farrell explained. Farrell pointed out the irony that the route theHSE construction project is proposed to take, could, through increasing risk to residents, actu-

ally end up with somebody in the care of theHSE as a result of the construction processitself. In response to Farrell’s concerns, MinisterVaradkar said: “I can very much understand theconcerns about HGVs in the village and theimpact on the bridge during what is a verysubstantial construction period. Obviously Ican’t interfere with the planning process nowthat it is before An Bord Pleanála, but I have

discussed the matter with the ChiefExecutive of the County Council and Icertainly will discuss it further with theHSE once the decision is made by AnBord Pleanála, so the impact on residentsin Donabate can be minimised and anysafety concerns allayed.”Farrell continued “I have urged MinisterVaradkar to impress upon the HSE theconcerns of local residents, both in terms

of safety and the potential damage to road infra-structure in the area. I am pleased that MinisterVaradkar has taken these concerns on board, especially given that the HSE did not allowthese concerns to inform their plans during theconsultation process,” Farrell added.

I would not be confident. The hospitals are sopacked. There are no beds for everybody. It is a badsituation. I am quite elderly myself now and I amjust keeping my fingers crossed that I can keepgoing.

I don't think I would because all hospitals are full.

Miriam Fritsch

YOURVIEWWith reporter Miriam Fritsch

Well, from what I hear on the television and with thewaiting lists I wouldn't imagine it would be great.

Marie Kenny, Swords

No not really. I was in hospital recently and theysent me home then because there was no hope ofgetting a bed.

I would be very confident. I have gone through themedical system myself. I got good treatment. I haveprivate insurance as well. Once you get into thesystem they look after you very well.

Yes. For two reasons: I have private health insuranceand also under the public system I would be quiteconfident about getting a bed depending on what theillness was, whether it requires diagnoses andwaiting lists. Basically once you have private insur-ance I would be quite confident.

Well, the way things are at the moment I wouldn'tsay so. It is really gone very bad. So no, I wouldn’tbe confident.

I imagine I would get a trolley first. I wouldn’t thinkyou would walk straight into a bed. I wouldn’t feelthat confident about getting a bed.

No, I wouldn’t. My wife is sick on a regular basis. We have been there in the emergency room for at least two days on a chair before we even got a trolley. I have no confidence in getting a bed at all.

Yes, I visited the hospital a few times in the last fewyears and I was extremely well looked after. I reallythink they are working under terrible pressure but Ifeel I would get a bed if I needed a bed. The bedsituation is problematic, but the staff are excellentand I do think that they would do the best to get mea bed if I needed it.

Presentation To Local Guide Dogs Group

On Saturday 9th of May, at 2pm inthe Donabate Portrane CommunityCentre (DPCC), a new local needsanalysis of the communities ofDonabate, Portrane and Corballiswill be launched by County Mayor,Mags Murray. Funded by the County Council andguided by a local, communityresearch steering group, the surveyis the result of work completed inthe local community by CommunityWorks, a Galway based indepen-dent research team specialising incommunity development research. Commissioned in August 2014,Community Works conductedsurveys and interviews with focusgroups, residents and communitygroups to create a detailed profileof the Peninsula community. It wasdone to list the changes it hasundergone and to suggest thedirections the community mighttake in the future.Chairperson of the Steering Group, and local resident Ray O’Rourkesaid: “This analysis originallybegan with the idea of researchingthe local community’s perceptionof the Donabate PortraneCommunity and Leisure Centre.”

“Amongst other findings, ‘Formingthe Future’ identifies specificdeficits within the areas of youthfacilities, especially of a non-sporting nature; sports facilities, with reference to the All WeatherPitch; and cultural and entertain-ment facilities to include a dedi-cated space for art and drama.Residents also felt that a securitystrategy for the area needs to bedevised and implemented. It wasfelt issues of isolation and trans-port for local senior citizens needto recognised and addressed,” heexplained.“To help implement the recommen-dations of Forming the Future, theCounty Council have graciouslyagreed to fund a small grantsscheme open to all local groups, details of which will be announcedat the launch day. I wouldencourage one or two representa-tives from all local groups, nomatter how small, to attend thelaunch and obtain applicationdetails for this grant scheme,” headded. “On behalf of the Steering Group, Iwould like to thank Fingal CountyCouncil especially local CommunityOfficers Sinead Wiley and AnnMulligan for their tireless efforts,Jacinta Lowndes, General Manager,DPCC and of course, residents ofthe local community.”

Most of us have petswhich we adore andw h i c h q u i c k l ybecome part of thefamily. Pets like catsand dogs, as well aso t h e r m o r e e x o t i canimals provide uswith great company,and add greatly toour qual i ty of l i fe .T h e y p r o v i d e a nextra dimension tof a m i l y l i f e , w h e r ethe l ives of al l aree n h a n c e d b y t h e i rpresence. Therefore,it stands to reasonthat we should make

sure that our petsare always in tip-topshape at all times.Car ing for a pet ismuch more than justlove and a f fect ionfor them. It includesa healthy nutrition,grooming, shelter,health care and dailye x e r c i s e s . A s a nowner you need tob e a w a r e o f y o u rp e t ’ s n e e d s a n dm a k e s u r e t h a tregular visits to yourlocal vet is part ofyour regime.

Exercise

In the case of dogowners, it is vitallyimportant that yourdog is exerc isedregular ly . This istime consuming, butis essential for thedog’s well-being. Ofcourse, i t can beused as an excuse toexercise ourselvesand go for longwalks as the longs u m m e revenings are onthe way.

Nutrition

Pets often eateverything that isof fered to them. Therefore, the ownerusual ly does notquest ion, whetherthe pet’s nutrition ishealthy. But what exactly isgood nutrition? The nutr i t iondepends on activity, race, weight, age andgender of the pet. Al o w - a c t i v i t ydog, fore x a m p l e ,needs onlyabout 185-350calories daily, whi le largerand more activedogs need 1000-2000 calor ies. Many owners tendto overfeed theirpets. Thus, a lot ofpets are over-weight. In order to avoidoverweight orother s ick-nesses you canuse a foodf o r m u l a t o rthat helpsto combine ingredi-ents in order to meetthe pet ’s dai ly

nutr ient require-ments. As an owneryou should use aformula that iscomplete andbalanced. There aremany excel lentveterinary practices

a r o u n dt h e

North County, whocan examine yourpet to make surethat they are gettingthe correct amountsof protein and vita-mins in their diet

Vitamins

Sometimes humanstake v i tamins tocorrect their vitaminand mineral balance

in order to reachoptimal health.

Does that mean thatit could be healthyfor pets too? As anowner you shouldmake sure that youare feeding your peta complete andbalanced food. Inthat case i t is notnecessary to buyextra v i tamins foryour pet. There are,of course, a lwaysexcept ions l ikemedical issues andyou should talk toyour vet to seewhether your petneeds addit ionalvitamins or not. Petscan also be allergicto certain foods andthis will also need to

be checked out byyour vet.

Grooming

It is recommended tocomb and brush yourpets on a regularbasis, ensuring your

pet gets rid

of loose hair . Besure to check onleaves or otherthings that might betangled into the fur.Cats benef i t f romcombing on a dailybasis because theywill have lesser hairballs. As an owner of dogsor cats it is impor-tant to bathe them.

For dogs it isbest tobathe themonce amonth andcats every

f e wmonths. Be

careful not tobathe them too

often as i t wi l ltake away thenatural o i ls of

the skin andleads to itching.

Kennels andCatteries

If you want to go onholiday or need totravel for work, aboarding kennel orcattery is usually agood choice. Theyprovide a safe andcaring environmentfor your pet, whileyou’re away. Theprice varies from thesize of the animaland whether i t issharing accommoda-tion with others ornot . Boardingkennels can bebooked for all kindsof animals, for dogsand cats but also forhorses and reptiles.

Benefits Of RegularTrips To The Vet

Just l ike their

owners, pets needregular check-ups.Veterinarians checkthe pet ’s generalhealth and also helpwith any questionsyou might have. Moreover, they willmake sure thatvaccinations of yourpet are up-to-date. Ifyou get a new petmake sure to see avet straight away to

make sure thateverything is inorder.

Insurance

Sometimes noteven regular check-

ups with the vetprevent your petfrom becoming i l l .One of two petssuffers from a majorillness during theirlifetime. Therefore, itis a good idea toinsure your petsagainst unexpectedi l lnesses or otherhealth issues. Bydoing this, you willbe able to provideyour pet with thebest medical carepossible. Medicaltreatments canquickly add up andbecome a financialproblem. Sometimesyou can also benefitf rom boardingkennels or holidaycancel lat ion whensomething happensto you or your pet.

BehaviourTherapists

If your pet has somebad habits, you arenot the only one. Many animals have

behaviour issues.Usually, these petsdo not need atherapy. A behaviourtherapy is a lwaysrecommended whenthe pet’s behaviourputs itself or othersin danger. Before

you start with atherapy you shouldgo and see your vetto make sure thatthere are no under-lying medical issues. The vet shouldrecommend a certi-fied pet therapist.

New Maritime SafetyStrategy Launched Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, PaschalDonohoe, TD, has launched a new Maritime SafetyStrategy 2015 – 2019, the theme of which is ‘MakeTime for Maritime Safety.’The new strategy was developed and aims to assistour coastal communities in reducing the number offatalities at sea. With a great seafaring tradition inthe North County, this news will be warmlywelcomed here.“Although the average annual number of marineincident-related fatalities, at 11, is low, livescontinue to be lost on the water, despite regulation, inspections and training. Perhaps not surprisingly, most incidents happen in the fishing and recre-ational sectors. What is striking, however, is thefact that 99 per cent of maritime fatalities are male, with an average age of 44, and that fatalities in themaritime sector are potentially avoidable,” said theMinister. He continued, “There is broad agreement in thesector that to reduce fatalities, the focus needs tobe on changing culture and personal behaviourrather than on more regulation. While this Strategy

primarily identifies actions that the Department, through the Irish Maritime Administration (IMA) willtake, the important roles of individuals, families, friends and sectorial organisations are also high-lighted.”“The 33 actions outlined in the report are groupedunder five over-arching strategic objectives;Information and Communication, Search andRescue Operations, Standards, Enforcement, Dataand Evaluation. They are centred on promotingpersonal responsibility for maritime safety, improving search and rescue, and implementingpreventative measures, including a robust inspec-tion and regulatory framework, and an enhancedenforcement regime. “This strategy sets out in a very straightforwardway, what individuals, families, friends and localcommunities can do to ensure safety when takingto the water. This includes proper planning, oper-ating on a safety first basis, always telling some-body where you are going and when you expect tobe back, wearing suitable clothing and alwayswearing lifejackets and buoyancy aids. I urge everyone involved in the sector to pay closeheed to the strategy’s contents so that together wecan reduce, and eventually eliminate, needlessfatalities at sea,” he concluded.

As parents, it is very importantto know that your daughtersare safe on a night out withfriends, and that they are fullyaware that danger lurks every-where.According to experts, alcohol isthe number one ‘date rape’drug in Ireland. There arecases of sexual predatorsusing other drugs, but it is farmore common to secretly give‘double shots’ of alcohol toincapacitate vulnerablewomen.

A popular tactic is to surrepti-tiously strengthen the drink ofsomeone who is already volun-tarily consuming alcohol. Drinkspiking includes giving aperson a double or triple shot, when they believe they aregetting just one.The culture of permissivenessaround alcohol, as well as thebelief that victims may not geta sympathetic hearing, is onethat cannot be ignored. Aspokesperson for the RapeCrisis Network of Ireland said

that “women in these situa-tions feel a strong sense ofshame because they were sointoxicated, and they fear thatif they make a complaint, people will say that they wereasking for it. “People need torealise that rape is rape, whether the woman is sober ordrunk,” said thespokesperson.A ‘sobering’ thought is thataround 80 per cent of rapecases occur when women haveconsumed alcohol.
