Fianna Fail candidate for Swords, John Hennessy was furious at the fact that the present council has had five years to do some- thing, yet nothing has been achieved to date. Speaking to the County Leader , a fuming Hennessy said, “I have knocked on over 6,000 homes in Swords alone and one of the main items that resonates with them, is the embar- rassment they feel about Swords town centre and the way it is. In August 2009, Ryan’s pub was pulled down, and in the intervening time, there has been absolutely no action, drive or ambition to make Swords a decent place to live in,” he said. “It just sickens me, when I hear existing coun- cillors, who have been there for five years and more, talking about the town centre of Swords and about regenerating it, just as an election is looming. What have they been doing for the last number of years? Nothing’s been done and all we are left with is the condition of the town centre That’s an embarrassment to the county and it’s a disgrace, and has been for years. The net effect is that businesses have closed down and people haven’t got the town centre to enjoy, that they should have.” He then said, “I’m walking around estates, where people are cutting their grass and keeping their areas nice and neat, and the one area they have not got control over is the town centre and the Castle, and the Council have manifestly failed in this regard and it’s an absolute disgrace, and should not be allowed to happen again. I challenge any of these coun- cillors, who have been there for the past five or ten years, and are now talking about the regen- eration of the town centre, or the opening of the Castle. I can’t understand it and It just beggars belief.” Hennessy continued by saying, “One million American tourists visited the island of Ireland last year, and I would guess that between 70 and 80 per cent of them came in through Dublin airport. I would say that we got less than a handful of these visitors to come to Swords. Let’s call a spade a spade here. The reason for this is that Swords town centre is in atrocious condition, and is an embarrassment to the entire region and that’s the responsibility of the Council, and that’s what I intend changing.” When asked what he expected the local authority to do, he said. The Castle needs to be opened up and the two or three remaining buildings should be CPO’d and immediately knocked down and the area opened up, and have somewhere pleasant like Avoca. This, in turn, would create businesses around it, because it would bring a footfall to the place. I was delighted to see families enjoying the Brian Boru festival and the amount of people was incredible. However, at other times, they do not have a town centre to enjoy, and that’s down to the Council. It beggars belief that councillors would start talking about this, when they’re responsible for this disgraceful situa- tion. If the people of Swords elect me, my first few meetings will be with the County Manager, to find out what’s to happen, because this is an urgent situation,” he concluded. Boland told the County Leader, “I was forcibly struck by the visit of President Higgins to the United Kingdom, some weeks ago, with political representatives from all strains of both British and Irish poli- tics, united in the cele- bration of that visit. Noting the Queen’s comments of members of her family standing with us in 2016, along with the invitation extended by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, I am proposing that the North County should act on the opportunity which these events present, and host an inaugural Summer School in 2016.” He continued, “It seems to me that such an occasion provides an ideal venue for all traditions and their senior representa- tives, to commemo- rate the contributions made in both 1914 and 1916, by Irish men and women. Such an event, away from the main state ceremonies, and those to be held at the GPO, would provide a calmness to allow proper reflection of these historic moments and their relationship to each other,” he said. In the course of the President’s address in Westminster, he made reference to a man from the North County, the nation- alist, poet, parliamen- tarian and soldier Tom Kettle. Boland explains, “Kettle came from a family, who were at the épée centre of the politics of nationalist Ireland, whose father was a founder of the Land League. Collins Demands Action On Dangerous Footpath Residents of Bevertonestate on TurveyAvenue in Donabatehave expressedconcern for their

safety, and that oftheir children, regarding the narrow-ness of a section offootpath leading to the

village. They contactedIndependent candi-date in the upcominglocal elections,Michael Collins about

their concerns, in thehope that he can high-light this veryhazardous situation, before someone isseriously injured here.Collins told the CountyLeader, “This narrowstrip of pathway islocated outside thehome of the late MrsPhilomena Boylan, andmothers with pramsand buggies have tomove out on to theroadway, to pass thissection of pathway, which is too narrow forthem to negotiate. Thisapplies to all pedes-trians, as this sectionof pathway contractsto zero at this point,”he said.Resident, Orla Clancyrecently moved intoBeverton estate andshe frequently usesthis pathway on herway to NewbridgeDemesne and she toldthe County Leader, “Icannot negotiate thisarea on my own, nevermind when I have my

young daughters anda buggy with me. Carscome very quicklyalong this part of theroad, and pedestrianstravell ing to the

village, ot toNewbridge Demesne, are in real dangerhere,” she said.Collins expressed hisamazement that thissituation was notrectif ied when thebuilding of Bevertontook place, and also

why the CountyCouncil and thebuilder at the time, could not have cometo an agreement withthe householder, to

enable widening of thefootpath to take place. “As an alternative, surely a pedestrianway could have beenprovided fromBeverton, exiting ontoTurvey Avenue at theadjacent TurveyWoods. Must Bevertonresidents now wait foran accident to happen, before the issue isresolved. I have calledon the Council to havethis issue addressedas a matter of someurgency,” he said.

Independent local electoin candidate, Michael Collins ispictured with local resident, Orla Clancy and her daugh-ters, Anna and Sarah, at the point where the pathwaycomes to an end on Turvey Road in Donabate.

Rush man, Rhys Byrne has been blessed with amost unusual gift, he is an exorcist. Whilst thismay appear to be a glamorous enough gift tohave, Rhys explained to the County Leader, how he came to have this gift, and some themore practical sides of exorcism.

Rhys (19), says he has been given a special giftthat helps him overcome devils and ghosts thatpossess people and haunt houses. Since I wasvery young, I always knew that I had differentsenses to anybody else. I had the ability to seeand speak with spirits since I was a child. Heexplained, “People can become possessed by ademon without even realising it. As I got older,I spent more time working on it, because I usedto see spirits, who came to me and frightenedme. Whatever form they passed away in, wasthe way they appeared to me,” he said. When he was 15, Rhys fell into a coma, and itwas this that had a defining effect on him.“When I awoke from the coma, I was moreaware and I knew things that I didn’t knowpreviously. It was then that I started workingwith demonics, which people regards as devils.Rhys, who is a Buddhist, trained to be a monkin India and his exorcisms are totally differentto those of anyone else. “I don’t us the bible orcrucifix, I use one to one approach, face on

without the use of books, or such. What I dois completely unique,” he said.He is inundated with requests from peoplelooking for help, and as he explained, hedoes not look for financial rewards. “I dothis to help people and the payment I get,is to see the satisfaction on their faces, afterthe demons have left. This is in accordancewith the Buddhist teachings,” saidRhys, who assesses each situation tofind the reason for any possessions,in case they have been induced bymedication, or substance abuse, ormay just be in the person’s head.“A lot of people will be too afraidto come out openly and say theyare possessed, as they fearmost people won’t believethem. I can help these peopleby doing a reading on them, finding out what’s troublingthem and then drawing thedemon out. There hasnever been a situation, where I was unable to helpa person,” said Rhys, whosometimes regards hisgift as a burden, such isthe amount of work hehas to do.

Should Balbriggan PayFor Sub-standardWater? - MurphyIndependent candidate for BalbrigganElectoral area, Tony Murphy, is chal-lenging the County Council to addressthe sub-standard water issue inBalbriggan, before handing over to IrishWater and washing its hands of thematter, after years of neglect.Murphy told the CountyLeader, “Balbriggan has beenbadly let down by the CountyCouncil and local councillors. We need action now to addressthe issue of water going intoBalbriggan homes, which isdestroying central heatingsystems, washing machines, dishwashers, showers andkettles. The issue is costing Balbrigganhouseholds tens of thousands of eurosevery year for replacements andrepairs. Some families have had to goto the expense of installing filtrationsystems, to ensure a suitable supply of

clean water. This is a disgrace andneeds to be addressed immediately,”he said“This matter is all the more urgentwith the imminent introduction ofwater charges - a new tax on hardpressed households. I do not agreewith this charge, as water is a naturalresource for which we are alreadypaying for in our taxes.” “I have been

informed on a daily basis byresidents of Balbriggan thatthey have made personalrepresentation to the localauthority about the waterissue, without success. It’s nota new issue and the Councilhave had plenty of time toresolve the matter. They arenow passing the problem toIrish Water, an organisation

which will eventually become a privatecompany, with little or no responsi-bility to the individual” he said. “TheCounty Council cannot be allowed toavoid its responsibility in this matter. We need to act now,” he concluded.

We havemet some fantastic people, who although they had neverbeen involved infundraising withus before, cameon board andmade a hugeeffort to bring insponsorship to

help the children we workwith.” “The money raised willbe spent on a few differentprojects, and the funds willalso help to transport a group

Butler Resumes Fight For Brackenstown VotersLocal councillor, DarraghButler (FF), has expressedconcern that voters on theBrackenstown Road,Brackenstown Village andPark Avenue areas, might

not be permitted to voteacross the road from themin St. Cronan’s NationalSchool for the Council andEuropean elections in afew weeks time, as

promised.“We had received acommitment from theCounty Council that allBrackenstown Villageand Park Avenue voters

would be permitted tovote in the Council andEuropean elections in St.Cronan’s School, but itnow looks like theGovernment are going todecide to hold the unex-pected Dublin West by-election on the sameday,” he told the CountyLeader. “Unfortunately whilst wewon the fight toget Swords re-united back, aspart of the oneo v e r a l lconstituency ofDublin Fingal(that will replaceDublin North),unfortunatelythis only fullykicks in the next timethere is a full general elec-tion.” “Whilst I haveproposed a number ofpossible solutions to theCouncil to allow residentsstill vote across the road,as opposed to having totravel the long wayaround to River Valley,

possibly in a separateclassroom for Dublin Westvoters, the ultimate deci-sion will be taken by theCounty Sheriff and not theCounty Council.Unfortunately if theGovernment decides toproceed with the by-elec-tion on the same day, thiscould mess up our plansfor St. Cronan’s schoolwhich will unfortunatelyresult in a lot of voters

staying at homeand in protestrefusing to exer-cise their democ-ratic right.I have put downthe followingmotion for ourMay Swords Areameeting: “ThatBrackenstown

Dublin West voters(Brackenstown Villageand Park Avenue) must bepermitted to vote acrossthe road in St. Cronan’sfor the Local andEuropean elections, evenif the Government decidesto hold the Dublin Westby-election on the sameday.”

Devitt Calls For EndTo Letting CrisisCouncillor Anne Devitt (NP) is calling onthe local authority and relevant agen-cies to address the problems associ-ated with families in receipt of rentallowances in Swords and surroundingareas. She told the County Leader, “Inrecent weeks, I have beencontacted by mothers, whohave been given notice to quitfrom their rented accommoda-tion in Swords, due to theshortage of rental propertiesin the town. Rents areincreasing by 20 per cent ormore.”“Three bed units that were€1100 per month last year, cannow command rent of €1400 per monthat the moment. Landlords are eitherincreasing the rents, or terminating thelease, stating that they need the prop-erty for a family member.”“This is putting these propertiesoutside the reach of those on rentallowance, which, for such a unit is€850 and is being reduced to €650 by

the Department of Social Protection. The balance of the rent is beingprovided by the tenant from socialwelfare payments,” she said.Devitt was mindful of the humanmisery that is faced by families in suchcircumstances, and said, “A familyforced to quit their rental home arefinding it impossible to find replace-ment homes in the school catchment

area, or in any area at anaffordable rent. These familiesare not only facing eviction, but are also facing theprospect of having to movetheir children out of the areaand find news school placesfor them. To make mattersworse, many landlords nowspecifically exclude rentallowance recipients from

their properties. “The housing agen-cies are full and the council has awaiting list of thousands. Many ofthese people have been over eightyears on the housing list.” “I amcontacting a number of agencies andam asking the council to take the leadin setting up a working group to dealwith this crisis,” she concluded.

EU Battle For Power Within Duffy Objects To “Poster Mania”Local candidate for theSwords Ward in the localelections, Ken Duffy (GP),has strongly objected towhat he calls the recentbout of “poster mania”around Swords in the leadup to the local electionslater this month. “Themad clamber this year toplaster Swords MainStreet and surrounds withelection posters really hithome last week. This year, more than previous elec-tion years, has seen a

level of postering neverseen before in the town, due mainly to the increaseby five in seat numbers inthe Swords Ward, it ispure poster madness,” hetold the County Leader.“Postering is now a freefor all, posters staringdown from trees, lowhanging posters which area serious treat to a face oreye injury. They are onroundabouts, creating adistraction to motorists, with the potential tocause accidents, the listjust goes on. There are

breaches of the rules onthe main street outsidethe County Council offices, posters thatshould have beenremoved immedi-ately. Where areour enforcementofficers?”Duffy continued. He went on toexplain, that manyof the posterscurrently out on display, were breaking regula-tions: “All around theNorth County, regulationsspecific to positioning and

height are being ignoredand in breach of the rules.Speaking as a candidateand a concerned residentof Swords, I would like tosee the Council set a limit

on the amount ofposters each candidate can use.”“They should introduce apostering ban forSwords Main Streetand North Streetand have

prohibitive fines, withstrong swift enforcementfor any candidate inbreach of these rules,”Duffy concluded.

The European election campaign has only just kickedoff here in Ireland, but the battle for power acrossEurope has been in full play for some time. The projec-tions show both the EPP and the PES very close in thenumber of MEPs which they will return after the elec-tion. Their lead candidates, Schulz and Junker arefighting hard to become the President of theCommission. This job is expected to go to the candi-date of the party with the highest number of MEPsreturned. The Parliament must vote on the appoint-ment and the smaller groupings may join forces witheither the EPP or PES, to decide the issue or causeboth Junker and Schulz to do a deal. Both candidatesare campaigning across Europe and appearing in tele-vised debates setting out their vision for Europe.Parliament has taken the unusual step of passing avote of censure on Martin Schulz, the Parliament’sPresident, for using his office to push through theappointment of close aides to civil service positionsand of using his office improperly in his campaign.Junker is moving to a position of embracing reform andsays he will find a way to keep the UK within the unionand deal with their concerns. This bigger picture does not appear to be a feature ofthe election here at home. There seems little or nointerest among the voters in respect of the manage-ment of Europe. So it seems the election will be foughtjust on home issues. One way or the other, MEPs willbe elected on the 23rd and your vote can help decidewho they are.

McGuire HitsOut At DerelictBuildings InPortraneLocal councillor, Gerry McGuire(Lab) has hit out at the HSE overeight houses, in their posses-sion, that are left boarded up inPortrane. The houses in questionare located on Portrane Avenueon the main thoroughfare up toSt Ita’s Hospital.McGuire told the County Leader,“ It ’s a disgrace to see eighthouses boarded up, particularlyas we are in a housing crisis inthe Swords electoral ward. Anumber of these properties havebeen idle for almost 20 years, and that is an absolute scandalin this day and age, with peopleon long housing lists. I am nowasking the HSE to evaluate theseproperties and to repair themand let them out again for rentalpurposes. Either that, or disposeof them to the local authority, where they can be brought intouse for much needed accommo-dation in the community,” hesaid. These houses are listed andhave been the scene of anti

social behaviour, where an attemptwas made to burnone of them down.Ti les have beenremoved fromsome of the roofs, along with otherdamage. McGuireinsists, “It’s urgentthat we get thesehouses back to anoccupiable state. Ibel ieve the HSEshould hand themover to the Council,if they decide notto renovate them. Some of the resi-dents on thisestate have been tenants of theHSE for up to 40 years, and theyshould be afforded the opportu-nity to purchase their homes, because they have effectedimprovements, l ike centralheating and weatherproofwindows, as well as the main-tanance of the houses.”“These boarded up houses are areal eyesore for people using thisroad, and it is unfair to residentshere to have to put up with it. It’sanother ghost estate. withinwhat was once a very vibrantl iv ing area,” he concludedangrily.

Continued from page 1he joined the British Army and was killed inaction in September 1916.”“Thomas Ashe, a Kerry native was the most mili-tarily successful Easter 1916 Commandant. Hewas a national school principal at Corduff, Lusk.He founded the Black Raven Pipe Band andestablished a branch of the Volunteers, whomhe lead in the Battle of Ashbourne. He went onto be the President of the IRB, the defactoPresident of the Irish Republic. After the generalrelease in 1917, he went on hunger strike, duringwhich he died as a result of force feeding.”“Both men were nationalist, one a poet theother a musician. These were men of consciencewho made a real contribution. Both died fortheir beliefs. They just died on different battlefields. These are two great men of vision, ofculture, of action, men who wanted the samething. Both died seeking it in different ways.”Boland concluded by saying, “Should I be fortu-nate to be elected on May 23rd, I intendformally calling on the incoming council toestablish, and host an annual Kettle AsheSummer School. This would be a fitting tributeto these great men, while providing a perfectplatform for men and women of all traditions tojoin together in celebration of the role thatFingal played in both struggles. Such an occa-sion embraces all traditions and allows all torecognise the contribution made a hundredyears ago.”

Parents of school going children inCastleview estate in Swords, haveexpressed their concerns about the lackof a footpath, leading from the estate tothe nearby primary schools, to ensuresafe passage for the children.Resident, Joe Billings contacted localelection candidate for Swords, JoeNewman (NP), in the hope that thissituation can be resolved as soon aspossible. He told the County Leaderabout how this problem is impacting onthe safety of children in the area. “Wemoved in here when the estate wasbuilt in 2001. However, the planners, intheir wisdom, never put paths throughthe green. Aesthetically it looks verynice, with trees and a break betweenhouses. However, when you have kids

trying to get across from one side to theother with no pathway, they have towalk over a green area, which can bewet and mucky at times,” he said. “People pushing a buggy are forced towalk on the road with heavy traffic, particularly at rush hour in the morning.People accessing the walkway leadingto the two local schools, from theestate, have to cross a busy section ofroad, with obvious dangers. Otherwise, they have to walk across wet, muckyground, where the children’s feet getwet, and buggy wheels get stuck. Allthey have to do is to connect two path-ways, to solve this problem - a distanceof no more that 20 yards,” he said.Elect ion candidate, Joe Newmanagreed, “I think this is an important

safety issue and is another example ofbad planning and I’m calling on theCouncil to make contact with theResidents Association to resolve thisissue, before the next school term. Itwon’t cost too much money to resolve this problem, and I would likethem to come an evaluate the situa-tion, before a tragic accident occurs,”said Newman.

Living Room

During Springtime andearly summer, yourliving room should havea lot of space. Therefore, get those old books andmagazines out. Thecarpet may be dark anddirty after the winter, soits best to get a new onein the colour you wouldprefer. It is, however, advisable to leave it verybright and warmcoloured. This wouldcreate a strong sense ofSpring / Summer andwould surely make youfeel happier. If there isold furniture that takesup lots of space, replaceit with somethingsmaller and brighter.Don’t forget, a livingroom is a place forresting, keep it as openas possible.

Kids Stuff

The little people in ourlives can’t always helpas much as we wouldlike them to. However

there are ways that youcan help them, to helpyou. Provide your chil-dren with storage boxesand shelves to storetoys, games and otherthings they should put

away once play time isover. Make this a partof the bedtime routine.Just before it’s time tobrush their teeth orthem a bed time story. It’s easy to give chil-dren’s bedrooms makeovers. Changingcurtains, light shadesand duvets coverswhich include your chil-dren’s favourite char-ters can be very easyand also expensive. Ifyou decide you’re goingto change things in yourchildren’s room’s andcan’t do it all at once tryadding a new featureeach week and telling

your little darlings thisis a reward for themhelping to keep all theirtoys and belongingsstored. Another greatidea is for you to deco-rate your children’s

room with their art workand family photos.

Garden Clean Up

After a long harshwinter, people are nowsuffering from cabinfever in their attemptsto get into the gardenand do some muchneeded tidying up.Winter time can be veryharsh on gardens, butnow, with the weatherfinally picking up, nowis your opportunity toextend some tenderloving care and get yourgarden looking greatagain.

Nothing says spring /summer is here likeyour garden. It’s time todig out those spadesand shovels and reallymake your gardenshine with some newplants and flowers. Forthose who like DIY, butwithout as muchhassle, it’s best to goand buy your pottedplants in your favouritespring colours andplant them as they are.A visit to your localgarden centre willensure that you canavail of the necessaryflowers, shrubs andtrees to give yourgarden that wow factor.Don’t be afraid toexperiment withcolours and gardendesign. Your localgarden centre will beonly too pleased toprovide you with thenecessary advice, as

well as the plantsneeded for thispurpose. You will find all thesupplies, materials, fertilisers andmachinery you need todo a great job in yourlocal garden store, soyou won’t have to gomiles to spruce up thegarden. Even justcleaning up all theweeds and old plantswill really make a differ-ence. When planning aGarden Clean up, it isimportant to planahead. Make sure youhave the proper tools to

carry out the job. Youwill need a strong raketo scarify the grassbefore cutting. Lawnmowing can be toughand time consuming, however with the rightmower it can actuallybe an enjoyable experi-ence. Tending yourlawn should takeminimum effort andprovide maximum plea-sure, and with the widerange of lawn mowersavailable on themarket, it is easy topurchase the wrongone, thus making thejob tedious and costly.

Questions about howoften to mow willsometimes arise. Forthose who like to mowoften, mulching is a

good idea, as themulched clippingsfertilise the new growthkeeping your lawngreen.
