Councillor Criticises Lack Of Items On Council AgendaSwords councillor,Darragh Butler (FF) hasexpressed his surprise

at the lack of questionsbeing presented by hisfellow councillors at theLocal Area meetings. Hetold the County Leader,“I have to say that, considering that we areall out knocking ondoors at the moment, Iam very surprised thatso few councillors have

taken the time to listagenda items for theCouncil to resolve. What is the pointin having thesemeetings if localcouncillors arenot raising localissues. It isvitally impor-tant at the endof May, that voters re-elect the hard workerswith a strong trackrecord and ask seriousquestions of theothers,” he said.“Most months I amactually over the quota

limit in terms ofagenda items that Iattempt to list, and

again thismonth, I havehad to hold afew items backto our nextmeeting, if I amre-elected at theend of May. It is

the same councillorslisting agenda itemsagain and again eachmonth and it is disap-pointing that others donot bother to use uptheir quotas in thisregard,” he concluded.

O’Leary WelcomesNew ConstructionStrategyLocal election candidate for theBalbriggan Ward, Cllr Tom O’Leary (FG),has welcomed the launch of Construction2020, the Government’s ConstructionStrategy, by the Taoiseach, Enda KennyTD, and the Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore TD. “I strongly welcome the announcementof a strategy to boost the constructionindustry across the North County and beyond,”he told the County Leader. “This is a concrete

measure designed to create jobs for highlyskilled construction workers. I know in the NorthCounty, many hundreds of jobs were lost in theconstruction industry when the property marketcollapsed.“Crucially, the strategy is not about returning tothe unregulated, speculator and developer-

driven overheated property market.Rather, this strategy is about meeting thehousing demand that currently existsacross the country and ensuring that fami-lies and first-time buyers across the NorthCounty have access to quality affordablehomes.”“There was a 91 per cent reduction in thenumbers of housing units completed

between 2006-2013. This strategy aims toaddress housing need by tripling housing outputby 2020 and add 60,000 jobs to the constructionsector over the same period,” he explained. “I strongly welcome this positive step towards amuch needed rejuvenation of our constructionsector, in the locality and beyond,” O’Learyconcluded.

Sinnott Critices Duffy OverAddress CommentsIndependent candidatefor Swords, Justin Sinnotthas reacted to the GreenParty’s call for Swordsvoters to vote for Swordsbased candidatesHe said, “In last Monday’sCounty Leader, GreenParty candidate, KenDuffy called for Swordsvoters to give their vote tocandidates based inSwords. Duffy claims thatthis is necessary, so as to

change the Council’snegative attitude toSwords. Duffy believesthat it is the lack ofSwords based councillorsthat has contributed tothe town’s decline.”Sinnott continued: “WhatSwords needs are ninecouncillors who have avision for the town, and towork for five years tomake that happen. I feelKen’s comments are disin-

genuous and disparagingof candidates who do notlive in Swords.” Sinnott has also pointedto the size of the Wardand that the Green candi-date has himself beencampaigning throughoutthe area: “Like all candi-dates running, Ken hashad a presencethroughout the Ward. Hehas posters in Donabateand Santry for example,

and therefore is clearlysoliciting votes from thoseoutside of Swords. If he iscalling for Swords resi-dents to vote for Swords-based candi-dates, why is henot applying thesame standardo u t s i d eSwords?”He pointed to thework he hasdone in Swordsand his plans, ifelected: “I have beenworking in Swords formonths now and meetingresidents and discussingtheir concerns. Only this

week I met with residentsin Forest Walk anddiscussed the provisionof speed ramps in theirestate. If elected I will be

meeting thesame residentsagain in June towork towardsgetting this done. For me actionsspeak louderthan words and Iwould urgevoters to

consider each candidateon their merits and ontheir policies, and not ontheir address,” heconcluded.

Independent local electioncandidate for Swords, JoeNewman, is calling on theCounty Council to sort outthe chaotic traffic situationthat occurs at peak timesadjacent to the LordMayor’s pub in Swords. He told the County Leader,“At most times, but partic-ularly at evening peaktimes, drivers accessingRiver Valley from Swordstown centre, are engagedin a free for all at the junc-tion of Main Street andChurch Road right besidethe Lord Mayor’s pub. Anumber of residents fromRiver Valley havecomplained to me aboutthe situation. They do notknow which lane to getinto, as they wait for the

lights to go red at the turnonto Forest Road. Sometake the left lane, in thehope of being able toaccess the right handlane, but this can meanblocking traffic goingstraight. This is causingirate drivers to honk theirhorns, adding to the angerand confusion. If they takethe right hand lane, theyare blocking traffic tryingto access Church Road, on

their way toBrackenstown. It’s a nowin situation for thesedrivers,” said Newman.“Drivers are utterlyconfused as to what to dohere, and I’m now callingon the Council to put atraffic management planin place, to sort out thisproblem for once and forall, before there is aserious incident here,” hesaid.

McGuire Optimistic About Donabate PitchCouncillor Gerry McGuire(Lab) is confident that theproblems associated withthe all-weather pitch inDonabate, are set to beresolved in the nearfuture. The pitch has beena source of controversy, since it was closed, due toflooding problems.McGuire told the CountyLeader, “There’s been aproblem with this pitchfrom day one. Just twodays after the pitch washanded over, there was aserious flooding problemhere, which has not beenresolved since. We havebeen painstakinglyfighting this at Counciland VEC level. It has beendiscovered that the pitchwas built a metre and-a-quarter lower than wasspecified in the planning, and the developer hasrefused to enter intonegotiations, or arbitra-tion on the issue.

However, both the localauthority and theEducation and TrainingBoard are pursuing a legalavenue to bring the devel-oper to court, and havethis problem sorted,” hesaid.“This pitch initially cost€1.2 million to build, which was funded by thelocal authority, wasintended for use byDonabate CommunityCollege, DonabatePortrane EducateTogether School, ScoilPhadraig na Cailini and StPatrick’s Boys Schoolduring school periods, and would revert tocommunity use in theevenings and at week-ends,” he said.McGuire spoke about howthis all weather pitchwould benefit the localcommunity. “There are anumber of sports clubs in

the area, includinghockey, soccer, GAA andathletics, who all have totravel outside the penin-sula to avail of all-weatherfacilities. I have been

arguing and fighting forthis at all levels for thepast while, and it nowseems there may be anend in sight. It is intendedthat, in September, without prejudice to thelegal case going on, that

we may be able to bring itinto use, even though itwill not have any flood riskinsurance on it. There’s awhole generation ofschool going children whohave missed on on thisfacility,” he concluded.

More than justgood intentions

Continued from page 1which is the single largestcontributor to thenational economy. Welook forward to ourcontinuing associationwith this growth,” hesaid. The originalChamber started life asSwords and DistrictChamber, at a time whenthe business scene wasfar removed from where itis now. Tony Lambertspoke about how thisorganisation developedfrom humble beginnings,to becoming the commer-cial powerhouse that it istoday.“In 1994, it becameobvious that businesspeople in Swords neededa strong organisation topromote the area - notalone Swords town, butthe whole region. The

result was that 35 busi-ness people cametogether in March 1994to form the Swords andDistrict Chamber ofCommerce. The districtpart refers to DublinAirport, as well as otheroutlying areas ofSwords,’ he said.In the early 2000’s, thename changed to SwordsFingal Chamber, to betterreflect the wider repre-sentation of businessesthat were members ofthe Chamber. Thiscontinued for a numberof years, until the FingalDublin Chamber and, with the merger with theD15 Chamber, it becamea stronger, more repre-sentative organisation, with companies fromthroughout Fingal andthe greater Dublinregion.”It is generally acceptedthat Fingal DublinChamber is viewed as aparticularly successfulmodel, which has incor-porated the D15 Chamberinto the fold, to produceone powerful, cohesivebusiness entity. Guestsat the Maldron Hotel onThursday came from awide spectrum of busi-ness people from theregion, and it was abun-

Swords councillor, Darragh Butler (FF), hasexpressed his extreme frustration that the south-side of Dublin, is once again receiving priority fortransport funding, at the expense of provi-sion of a proper transport infrastructurefor the North County. His comments come on foot of theannouncement that Irish Rail have puttheir €2 billion Dart Underground plansback on track. He told the County Leader:“Whilst we continue to fight for theGovernment to keep their pre-electionpromises in relation to Metro North, wesee progress being made with regard to aDART Underground line that will run fromthe Docklands to Inchicore, to a part of Dublin thatis already well served by the LUAS. Funnilyenough, we don’t hear the largely southsidemedia and commentators coming out to say thatthis is a waste of money,” he said. Butler, whoalong with other local councillors, has been anadvocate of Metro North serving Swords and theairport, continued: “Whilst we continue to fight to

keep Metro North alive, the Fine Gael / LabourGovernment continues to prioritise the southsideof Dublin and try to pawn us off with bendy busesinstead. As per my motion at our last full Councilmeeting, we will not accept the Swiftway bendybuses as a consolation prize for Metro North.”“We want Metro North delivered as promised. This issue comes up every evening and weekendwhen I am out knocking on doors. I am the onlyone continuing to raise this at Swords Area and

full Fingal County Council meetings. Withthe Dublin West by-election alsoimpacting Swords, I would call on allvoters to remind Minister for Transport,Leo Varadkar of his broken promiseswith regard to Metro North when he comesknocking on doors in Swords, looking forvotes again in the coming days andweeks,” he blasted. “This DARTUnderground project was put on hold in2011, along with Metro North and we nowsee it getting the go ahead, with no light at

the end of the tunnel for Metro North. Surelylinking the airport, Swords and North Dublin to theCity Centre would have much more impact and ismore important than this project. Two Fine GaelMinisters, who won votes in Swords in the lastGeneral Election, continue to break their own pre-election Metro North promises and this is simplynot acceptable,” concluded a furious Butler.

Newman SupportsRidgewood Residents’Traffic PetitionA major problem is in the pipeline for residents ofRidgewood estate in Swords, who are set to facehazardous conditions, due to an excess of constructiontraffic in the estate. Residents in the area are in theprocess of putting a petition together to oppose thedevelopment.Independent candidate for Swords, Joe Newmancontacted the County Leader to highlight the concernsof residents on Ridgewood Avenue, and said, “I wascontacted by a number of residents, who expressedtheir concerns for the safety of children playing in thearea at Ridgewood Avenue. There’s a lot of heavyconstruction traffic passing the area, with a lot of youngchildren here. There is permission for a total of 44houses near the new football pitches, with potentialapplication for a further 170 homes. There are also anumber of football pitches in the area, withoutadequate parking facilities, which is adding to theproblem,” he said.Suzanne Gorman, who is on the Residents Association,is very concerned about the situation. She told theCounty Leader, “We have two main objections. The firstand most important is that this road here is not suitablefor construction traffic for another 170 houses. It is fullof families, with children and cars, which is already

under pressure, due to the pitches in the area. There isoutline planning permission for a further 170 homes, which will take two years to build, and this area cannottake this. Our children are at risk,” she said. “The otherreason is that this is not a through road - it was a cul desac and is inappropriate area for this kind of develop-ment. Newman said, “This is another example of badplanning, and if I am elected, I will make this an issue atCouncil level. I also had contact with another resident inthe area, regarding a traffic impact assessment, whichhas been carried out by a firm. There’s concern thatthere may be a conflict of interest with regards to thisand we’re investigation this at the moment,” concludedNewman.

Independent local election candidate, Joe Newman ispictured with Ridgewood resident, Suzanne Gorman at thenew construction site at the end of Ridgewood Avenue.

Devitt Calls For BMX Track In SwordsSwords councillor, AnneDevitt (NP) is convincedthat she has uneartheda suitable location tolocate a BMX track inSwords. The site is adja-cent to the newBrackenstown play-ground.Speaking to the CountyLeader, Devitt said,“Five years ago, theBrackenstown commu-nity almost reached anagreement withthe Councilabout buildinga CommunityC e n t r e .Unfortunatelythe recessionintervened andthe childrenthat were to be cateredfor, have now grown toteenagers. There is aneed, not only inBrackenstown, but inthe whole of Swords, fora good facility forteenagers. BMX bikingis becoming an increas-ingly popular sport, andwe have some excellententhusiasts here inSwords. This venue, beside the playgroundis perfect for a BMX

track and the Councilalready have experienceof a project like this, having already built oneat St Catherine’s Park inLucan,” she said.“What is needed is aBMX club, and then theCouncil will apply for thegrant and then they can build it.Unfortunately, it hasbeen slow enough toget the club off the

ground. I havespoken todeputy ClareDaly TD during acanvass and sheand I agree that,to put thiswithin theBrackenstown

community, would giveboth the community andSwords itself, a greatboost. I just hope thatthe group trying to setup the club, will widentheir support area, toinclude all of the Swordselected councillors andwe will ensure that, aslong as they have theclub in place, we willprovide the facilities. i

believe that, getting aBMX club here withfacilities will be the keyin delivering a fit forpurpose Brackenstown

Community Centre, because it will give thecritical mass of leisureuses to have changingrooms etc. This is a vitalfirst stepping stone onthis journey,” sheconcluded.

Paving

Nothing at all can beatthe versatility of stonefor style, finesse, char-acter and colour. Tocreate the stunning, thesophisticated, the elab-orate or the premise ofhouse to domestictemple, paving is theultimate investment.Paving can be used tocreate a stunning

Everyone knows thatsummer is the time ofbright colours and(hopefully!) sunshine. It’s a time for positivechanges. The daytimehours become longer, and we can now stayout and enjoy moretime in the greatoutdoors and love thethoughts of cominghome to our beautifulhomes. However, people tend to spendmore time inside theirhome than out, so whynot make your home asbright and relaxing aspossible.

Make A Good Plan

Making a plan at thestart of summer is awise move. Start bywriting all the thingsyou would like to do inthe home and thenprioritise them. If this

means starting with thecheapest improvementsthen that is the way togo. A fresh look to yourwindows can be createdby adding new blinds orhaving your currentones reversed. Thewindow is one of themain focusses in a roomand by having it lookinggood, it can give adifferent look and feelto any room. Flooringcan be ready to changethis time of the yearafter the bad weatherwe have had. Replacingfloors is a job that canreally give a huge newlook to a room orhallway. Carpets are soluxurious and are avail-able in all price rangesand give a stylish, comforting and warmlook.

Flooring

Refreshing or renewingyour home’s flooring, could give your housethe lease of life itneeds. This couldeither involve updatingyour old flooring forfresh new laminatestrips, or simply revital-ising any old carpetswhich could bebringing down theentire ambience of yourabode. If you haveolder carpets in yourhome, they could notonly be letting downthe appearance of theroom, but may also behiding a multitude ofsins. Having yoursprofessionally cleanedwill get rid of dust andmay improve the airquality and reduce anyunwanted odourscircling your home. There are many profes-sionals in the NorthCounty who can giveyour carpet a top-to-bottom deep clean, sodon’t hesitate tocontact them with anyenquiries. However, if you feelyour carpets arebeyond being profes-sionally cleaned andhave seen much betterdays, it might be timeto consider fresh newlaminated flooring.Fitting brand spankingnew laminated or tiledfloors will transformyour home, makingeach room seembrighter and makethem much easier tomaintain. Easy to clean, shiny laminated floorsare an excellent idea ifyour little ones areprone to spillages.

Mulville Calls For Lighting OnSwords Pedestrian BridgeIndependent candidatefor Swords, PaulMulville has high-lighted a potentialsafety hazard forpeople from theDrynam Road area ofSwords, who need totravel on foot toSwords and thePavilions ShoppingCentre. Mulville spoketo the County Leader, and relayed an issuethat keeps cropping upon doorsteps in thearea. He said, “Thepedestrian foot bridge, which connects theDrynam Road area,

with Swords, is afrequently used foot-path, but in theevening time, it can be

very dark and may be alikely venue for antisocial behaviour, dueto it’s dark aspect.

People are concernedabout the lack ofpublic lighting on thispedestrian overpass.People trying to travelon foot at night time, are fearful for theirsafety, due to the lackof floodlighting on thepedestrian bridge. Theproblem which the lackof adequate lightingcan cause, is to forcepedestrians to try toaccess the Pavilionsarea, by crossing thevery busy anddangerous road here, with potentially fatalconsequences,” hesaid. “This area ishome to a lot of elderlypeople and children, and on dark evenings, they are concerned fortheir safety. I amcalling on the Councilto make sure thatadequate lighting isput in place, as soonas possible, and defi-nitely before thedarker evenings comein,” he said.

Balbriggan TidyTowns CommemorateIconic RaceSeveral months backwhen Balbriggan TidyTowns heard that theGiro d’Italia cycle race was going to visitBalbriggan, the group was very excited, just likethe rest of the community, and wanted to markthe event in a special way. Balbriggan TidyTowns member Zoe Nelson, spoke to the CountyLeader about the special way the group decidedto commemorate the event: “During a site visit to Balbriggan by AileenO‘Connor from the County Council, we started totalk about the fact the race would pass throughthe town at a phenomenal pace and the eventwould be over in a matter of hours. We began tothink how fitting it would be to plant a commem-orative tree to remind the community of the daythe Giro came to town,” Zoe explained.“We were on the Harry Reynolds road at the timeand it was just so clear this was the correct loca-tion for a tree commemorating a world classcycling event. As Harry Reynolds fromBalbriggan was the first Irish World CyclingChampion, a title he achieved way back in 1896,he was known as the ‘Balbriggan Flyer,’ so weknew it was the perfect location.”

“After some planning and preparation, the treewas sourced and planted at the junction of HarryReynolds Rd and the R122 Naul Road oppositethe graveyard. Local residents from ChapelStreet offered to prepare a flower bed at thebase of the tree and the whole project wascompleted on Saturday the 10th of May, the daybefore the Giro came to town,” she continued. The Giro did prove to be a spectacular sight, andas Tidy Towns members watched as the lastcyclist disappeared towards to the finish line, weknew Balbriggan had a lasting memory, a publicdeclaration of our Giro delight and experience,”Zoe concluded, happily.

Pictured here are some members of Balbriggan TidyTowns beside their commemorative tree, which theyplanted in aid of the recent Giro d’Italia.
