I would like to send my best wishes for the NewYear to everyone in the North County and to ourextended global family across the world. I amconscious that, for some of you, this year will onewhere unemployment, financial insecurity or theabsence of a loved one now living abroad will cast adark shadow. So these are troubling and testing times for somany but while acknowledging the hurt inflicted, the dismay caused, by the mistakes that weremade, I also believe that the Irish people have theresilience, the fortitude and the wisdom to movebeyond any destructive cynicism and recriminationand have the capacity and determination to moveon and craft a new positive form of their Irishness. It has been truly inspiring for me to witness theinnovation and the resourcefulness that have cometo the fore in our time of economic need and to see, across this island, communities renewing them-

selves in social solidarity throughco-operation and togethershowing practical concern foreach other and particularly for theless fortunate in this country and, indeed, throughout the world. While the wider global environ-ment is worrying, we are seeingsome positive results in oureconomic affairs. Our exportscontinue to grow; many of ourcompanies have become moreinnovative and competitive; anddirect inward investment is robustbut the great challenge of creatingjobs, reducing unemployment remains. We Irish also remain a nation of great cultural andsporting achievement, and this continues to enrichour society and enhance our reputation abroad. There is also widespread support for a post-reces-sion future driven by our people’s creativity andgrounded in a real economy that harnesses ourindigenous strengths and adds lasting value to oursociety. I am confident that, drawing on our sharedstrengths and our ethical values, we will rebuild a

sustainable and strong economywhile also at the same timebuilding a just and inclusivesociety that ensures the participa-tion of all its citizens. Ireland is a country and a peoplemoving forward with a commonpurpose and a shared Aisling ofhope and courage; a country thatwill marry the best of its oldwisdom with the new foundlearning wrought from the chas-tening experience of recent trou-bled times. We are a country of which there is

much to be proud; whose possibilities are still to befully imagined and realised; and whose people I amhonoured to serve. I wish you all a Peaceful and a Happy New Year.

MAYOR OF FINGAL

to the readers of North County Leader

GERRY MCGUIRE

TANAISTE & LEADER OF THE LABOUR PARTY

to the readers of North County Leader

EAMON GILMORE TD

As Mayor of Fingal, I would like to wish everyone aHappy New Year. 2011 was a difficult year, but despitemonetary constraints a lot of good things havehappened in the North County. During difficult economic times such as at present, it’soften easy to forget the importance of community andfamily, the backbone of our society and the hugelyimportant work carried out by many agencies, voluntarygroups, sporting clubs and bodies supported by theCounty Council in ensuring that our communitiescontinue to develop. It is very heartening having trav-elled the length and breadth of the county and to havemet so many of these groups and to witness first handthe enthusiasm, dedication, commitment andherculean efforts they are making together with theCouncil to make Fingal a better place to live. Now more than ever, there is a need for cohesion and asense of community spirit and pride. Both the County

Council and I have been and continue to be committedto engendering this community spirit through the provi-sion of staff resources and funding to community facili-ties/activities, even with limited resources.I was delighted as Mayor to represent the county and itscitizens at a variety of events, particularly the launch ofAge Friendly Fingal and the signing of ‘The DublinDeclaration’ endorsing the Age Friendly Cities andCommunities last September. 2012 is going to beanother challenging year in maintaining and creating

employment, but I amlooking forward to workingwith the Chambers ofCommerce, Fingal Tourism,Farming community,Industrialist, Hospitalitysector, Fingal DevelopmentBoard, Enterprise Board etcin devising strategies thatwill best generate economicactivity and ensure the

future for our population. The reduction in the commer-cial rates for this year is a major plank in this strategywhich I am pleased to have supported. The Irish Spirit is‘Endure and Succeed’ and we in the North County, together as a team can live up to that motto.I look forward to representing you again in 2012 andmeeting many of the groups and individuals across thecounty whom I am privileged to represent.

I know this Christmas and New Year period willbe a tough one for our people. We are livingthrough a period of great difficulty, far too manypeople are out of work and many families areexperiencing anxious times. Too many dinnertables will have empty chairs because so manyof our young people have left Ireland to findwork and Christmas and New Year wishes willbe expressed over the phone or on Skype. That’s why, this Christmas and New Year period,I want to reassure you that your government isdoing everything we can to turn aroundIreland’s fortunes and bring our children home. Faced with unpalatable choices, we have had tomake decisions no Irish government ever imag-ined itself having to make. But we’re doing it

because we’re deter-mined to get back oureconomic sovereignty,to get Ireland back onits feet, to get ouryoung people backhome, where they wantto be and where youwish they were at thistime of year. I am confident that, working together, wecan do this. Recoverywill not be easy and itwill take time, but Ibelieve that the

courage and character of the Irish people willrestore our country. To all the readers of the North County Leader, Iwish you and yours a happy, peaceful andhopeful New Year. Nollaig Shona Daoibh go léir.

ENDA KENNY TD

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny

I am delighted to havethis opportunity to wishthe readers of the NorthCounty Leader the verybest for the New Year.Looking forward to 2012 Ican assure you that mycolleagues in the LabourParty and in Governmentwill continue to worktowards the rescue of oureconomy, the creation ofjobs and the restorationof our economic sover-eignty.My Labour colleaguesand I entered Governmentin difficult times with a

clear mandate to sort outIreland’s economic crisis. When we took up officenine months ago, thiscountry was on the edgeof an economic cliff. Since

then we have graduallyworked our way back, and we are continuingevery day to improve oureconomy and to strive forthe creation of new jobs. The recent Budget was anecessary part of thisjourney. In difficult timesthe Government has keptits commitment not toincrease income tax forworking people and tomaintain core socialwelfare paymentsincluding jobseekers, state pensions and thestandard rate of childbenefit. We have taken330,000 people on lowincomes out of the reachof the Universal SocialCharge and maintainedthe number of special

needs assistants in ourschools and thepupil/teacher ratio in theprimary sector.I know how difficult it isfor families to make endsmeet and I understandthat for many of you it ishard sometimes toremain optimistic. Pleasebe confident that while itwon’t happen overnight,we will recover as acountry, we will getpeople back to work andthat we will make surethat our children have agood future, here in ourown country.Warmest wishes,Eamon Gilmore TDLeader, The Labour PartyTánaiste and Minister forForeign Affairs & Trade

For very many people, this Christmas hasbeen a challenging one and many families are facing a difficult New Year.I know that the character and heart of thepeople of the North County will see themcome together tocelebrate the NewYear with their fami-lies and friends in aspirit of community. The government that Iam a member of aredetermined to turnthis country around. It’s going to take allour energies and hardwork to fix the messleft to us all by the previous Government. AsMinister for Health, I am determined toreform our health service and it will be chal-lenging with a shrinking budget. We have nochoice, we must do it. It’s a challenge, butit’s also an opportunity to do things betterand I and the hard working members of thehealth service will rise to that challenge. The National Children’s Hospital will be builtby th is Government at the Mater s i te .Locally, the people of the North County havemy support. I am opposed to the currentproposal for a Monster Sewage plant in theNorth County, especia l ly in rura lBallyboughal, Skerries, Rush and Lusk. Inthe New Year, we must turn our attention toattracting inward investment and jobs intothe North County, a region with many posi-tive advantages for such investment. I wishall my constituents a Healthy and HappyNew Year.

MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT,TOURISM & SPORT

to the readers of North County Leader

LEO VARADKAR TDI would like to extend the warmest New Year greetingsto all readers of the North County Leader. We are livingin difficult times, and it has been a tough year foreveryone. However, there is good reason to hope that2012 will see Ireland firmlyon the road to recovery.Although the Budget hadsome tough measures, there was also good news, with no income taxincreases, no cut to theState pension, no UniversalSocial Charge for incomesunder €10,000, andincreased mortgageinterest relief for first time buyers who bought between2004-2008. Swords, in particular, will benefit from sometransport improvements. Money is being provided in theCapital Investment Plan to build new bus lanes, including a new bus lane on the North Quays. This willknock another few minutes off journeys on buses thatuse the Port Tunnel, such as the Swords Express. I havealso made sure that the road maintenance budgets willbe protected. There will also be a multi-million euro investment towiden the road near the ‘Cat and Cage’ in Drumcondrain order to provide a new bus lane by 2014. I hope nextyear will be a good one for all readers, and would like toextend Season’s greetings to all of you.

Fingal Dublin Chamber prides itself on itssupport and encouragement for businesspeople and in representing the many companieswho do business in theregion. It has been a very chal-lenging year for localbusinesses with manycompanies facing diffi-cult financial andtrading situations. TheChamber recognisesand congratulates themany companies in thearea on their skill anddetermination inseeking new opportu-nities and being innov-ative in retaining theirmarkets in a really difficult business environ-ment. The commitment of the retail sector in theNorth County region to excellence and a qualitycustomer care service is renowned and theChamber would ask all consumers to focus on

country with a great spiritand can recovery fromdifficulties we face. Therehas been huge progressin terms of education inNorth Dublin over manyyears and we continue tohave a young age profileand one of the fastestgrowing populations inthe country. Fianna Fáil has a role toplay in bringing forwardnew ideas and reformingand renewing our party. While I am working toplay a role in that inSeanad Éireann, I am alsocontinuing to work withcommunity groups andresidents in the NorthCounty on importantissues such as theproposed MonsterSewage Plant. 2011 was a year of polit-ical change in Ireland, with the elections of botha new Government and anew President. It was alsoa year of personal changefor me as I was elected asTD for Dublin North forthe first time. It is a greathonour to be elected and Iam very aware that I waselected to bring a strongvoice for the people of ourarea into government. This government is faced withthe difficult task of turning our current situationaround but I am confident that the coalition can getIreland onto a more solid footing.

Locally, it was welcome news to hear that 14 years ofuncertainty and worry has ended for many people inthe North County with the decision by the CountyCouncil not to proceed with the Nevitt Super dump. However it is difficult to celebrate such a decision witha new proposal for a monster sewage plant nowthreatening the environment and tourist industry ofour area. The issue of the proposed monster wastewater treatment plant earmarked for one of nine loca-tions in the North County has galvanised the localcommunities like no other in recent years. The lastthree months of 2011 has seen widespread publicopposition to this proposal. I am sure this issue willcontinue to play into 2012 and I look forward tostanding with the people in opposition to this ludi-crous proposal. I wish to take this opportunity to wishall in North County a prosperous New Year and to statethat I will continue to represent the needs and inter-ests of each and every constituent in Dublin North, especially those most vulnerable and hard pressed inthis difficult time.

I would like to wishyou all a happy andpeaceful New Year.2011 was a difficultyear for most, if not allfamilies throughoutthis country.December’s budgetsaw a reduction of upto €4 billion inspending, the first of afour step programmeto regain our economicsovereignty, which welost just over a yearago. It was a difficultbudget, however withit came the Jobs ActionPlan to attract invest-ment, an increase inmortgage interestrelief for those whoneed it most, and areduction in the USCcharge for low incomeearners, thusremoving 320,000

people from thecharge. I believe 2011 was theyear that Ireland beganits fight back for itseconomic sovereignty. In February, the peoplevoted for a newgovernment to leadthis country out of thiscrisis. Within the firstfew months of thisgovernment, theEU/IMF interest ratewas reduced andbanks were fully capi-talised, Irish tourismfigures increased, theminimum wage wasrestored and our repu-tation abroad hasbegun to recover. Dublin North, despitethe economicrestraints, has hadsome good news. Wehave secured three

new schools for theregion, investment insmarter transport andupgrades according tothe capital transportbudget, and further

investment in FingalEnterprise Board, theFingal communitysector, increased localroad and floodingmaintenance funding,as well as the appoint-ment of the PyritePanel whose findingswill be of greatinterest to manyhomeowners in theNorth County.

With this New Yearcomes new opportuni-ties to tackle the chal-lenges that we face asa nation with renewedoptimism and vigour. As a community, weneed to cometogether to ensurethat we restore ournational pride thathas taken a beatingover the past fewyears. We are workingharder than ever toensure the financialstability of our fami-lies; I can assure youthat each member ofgovernment is doingthe same on behalf oftheir constituents. Ilook forward to repre-senting you, thepeople of DublinNorth in 2012, and toengaging at govern-ment level to ensurethat North CountyDublin is given everypossible resource tothrive.”

yet again the dedica-tion and hard work ofits committeemembers. The

Christmas lights havebeen switched onbringing with them afestive spirit to beenjoyed by young andold. I would like totake this opportunityto thank the Chamber

crew without theirhard work and dedica-tion, nothing wouldhappen. We arelooking forward to2012 with great enthu-siasm and this enthu-siasm shines on everyfootball field or in

every meeting room, where we see peopleall working voluntarilyto make our town thewonderful place it isand with new projectscoming on line, theflag will certainly flyhigh.

by our improvement in the IBAL litter league.Swords went from 32nd position in 2010 to 4ththis year out of 53 towns that are surveyed in thecountry. The judges gave Swords an A rating(Clean to European Norm) on the 10 sites thatwhere inspected. Our objective for the New Year is to work with theCouncil and the land owner to open up an entranceto the Ward River Valley at Church Road. I wouldlike to thank Cllr Tom Kelleher for the hard work heis putting into bringing this about. Because of theemphasis been put on Nature, Biodiversity,Heritage and Sustainable Development in theNational Tidy Towns competition for the New Year,we need to draw up a new three to five year plan.To do this we will need the assistance of peoplewith more expertise, along with funds if we hopeto make any achievements in the competition. So Iwould like to appeal to the people and all organi-sations in Sword to take more pride in our town bycoming forward and volunteering to help.I would like to wish the people of Swords and allthe readers of the North County Leader goodhealth and a Very Peaceful, Prosperous and HappyNew Year.

Tidy Towns have had a very successful year andachieved ten extra points in the national competi-tion. It is so difficult to increase that many pointsthat the national team that run the Tidy TownsCompetition gave us a special Endeavour Award. The award waspresented in Septemberto the committee at aceremony by Ministerfor Tourism. LeoVaradkar. The TidyTowns team were chal-lenged by two thefts oftheir equipment thisyear and were devas-tated in May when thethieves got away with substantial pieces of equip-ment. However, the pupils of BalbrigganCommunity College came to the rescue bydonating proceeds from their school play. Thiswas such a kind act that the Tidy Towns teamhonoured the school with an award at the TownCouncil annual awards in October. I would also like to thank the Balbriggan ADHDgroup who recently donated funds to help with our2012 activities. I would like to send New Yeargreetings to all the residents of Balbriggan and themembers of the surrounding Tidy Towns groups inSkerries, Lusk, Balscadden, Balrothery and Rush. Iwould also like to specifically thank all our volun-teers who give so generously of their time andenergy for the benefit of the whole community. The Tidy Towns team have gained a number ofnew members this year, but are always looking fornew members, so if anyone would like to join inwhen the weather warms up a bit then they will bevery welcome.

2011 was a busy one, which saw a lot of changein Donabate with a lot of building and roadworks happening. As those projects are nowcomplete, we hope that we can concentrate onthe aesthetic aspects of Donabate in 2012.There was a fantastic project completed thisyear at the St. Ita’s wetlands with the help ofSt Patrick’s Boys School, Hans Visser of FingalCounty Council biodiversity dept and fundingfrom the LEADER organisation. This winter, the County Council will have to fell 50 or sopoplar trees on the Portrane Road, as they

have reached their lifespan and are nowdangerous on thisbusy road, so we willbe working with themto f ind a suitablereplacement in Spring2012. New tree andperennial planting willbe put in around thenew water pumping

station at “The Hand” and we are hoping toimprove the state of our grass verges nextyear. New volunteers are always welcome and you can contact us at [email protected] We would like to wish all of ourvolunteers and supporters a very happy, cleanand tidy 2012 and say thank you for makingDonabate a better place in which to live, workand play.

ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN ANDBISHOP OF GLENDALOUGH

to the readers of North County Leader

MOST REV. DR. MICHAEL JACKSON

As 2012 beckons usforward into a New Year,my hope is that wedevelop a deeper senseof community in theeveryday things of life.So much of what we arepromised these days isausterity and moreausterity. Such anapproach brings in itstrain a sense of fragility

and insecurity. The mostvulnerable in contempo-rary Ireland feel the painmost acutely in so manycorners of life. We needto take the opportunityto rejoice once again inhuman companionship, new friendships and thesharing which is thelifeblood of giving andreceiving. May you allhave a safe and peacefulNew Year as new dayslead us into new experi-ences of community andof loyalty to one another.

Dr. Michael Jackson

ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN

to the readers of North County Leader

MOST REV. DR. DIARMUID MARTIN

The past number of years has been very difficult formany Dublin families and unfortunately, 2012 may seeeven more people in our communities affected. Nextyear, we must all continue to remember the mostvulnerable in our society - older people, who struggledthrough hard times before and who now face suchuncertainty again; people who have lost their jobs andfallen into debt, children whose parents will struggle toprovide not only the extra luxuries, but even some basicnecessities. We are seeing the harsh realities of theeconomic downturn through our Crosscare services;greater demands on our food banks and in our home-

less services. The Societyof St. Vincent de Paul isalso dealing each weekwith calls and demandsfrom families who neverimagined they would haveto turn to them for help. And I must acknowledgethe concern of people inour parishes; just lastweek, we saw people give

as generously as they could to the annual DublinDiocesan Vincent de Paul Collection. The true sense ofChristianity can at times be best recognised by what ourchildren teach us. In their values we can discover some-thing of what God was telling us on that first Christmaswhen he appeared as a child. I pray the readers of theNorth County Leader and their families will find thatpeace and hope this New Year ahead.

HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18The trick to dealing with perplexing situations isto act swiftly and decisively, yet to expect littlein the way of response. By all indications takecareful note of this advice - and act on it - forwhat takes place this week.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20You frequently spoil those you care about andoften find it difficult to be tough with them. Butas events transpire this week, certain issuessimply cannot be ignored. Also, in all matters, the faster you act the better.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20As the week begins and you face unpleasant -and in some cases unfair - power struggles, youbecome dispirited about getting issuesresolved. In every case, persistance, combinedwith patience, wins the day.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20However time-consuming difficulties with othersare, you must explore your options. Initially, thisprovides intriguing insights, but towards theend of the week you will be putting into practisewhat you learnt in the past.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20Few things are more frustrating than having todeal with unfairly rigid circumstances or inflex-ible individuals. But you soon begin to see thatchange could help you take advantage of as yetundiscovered possibilities.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22Difficult as it may be, try not to take personallywhatever happens earlier in the week. This willenable you to focus on the far more intriguingdevelopments that are indicated in your signs asthe week comes to an end.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23You’ve known for some time that you were goingto have to confront certain individuals or situa-tions, but the time never seemed right. Now, notonly is it ideal, but your hand will be forced asthe week progresses.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22If you come to feel this is a week to tidy upmatters from the past, then you won’t minddealing with the issues you face. In fact, you’llbe revealed once circumstances force you toconfront certain situations.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22For weeks now you’ve been trying to get closeties or associates to agree to certain plans, butyou’ve been frustrated. Try to be patient, indica-tions are that events later in the week will playright into your hands.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22You’ve been cornered into making decisions thatreally aren’t your responsibility. And, whateveryou do this week, someone will object. Thatbeing the case, the solution lies in being tough, and call it as you see it.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21You’ve been ignoring all doubts or anxieties forsome time. Initially, you hoped you could side-step them. But evasion becomes increasinglydifficult when faced with developments as theweek takes hold.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19You want time to become comfortable with thepotentially life-changing offers that arise aroundThursday, but you’ll have to move swiftly. Anydelay with such decisions, and they could bemade on your behalf.
