New Victories on and off the playfield

On Friday, September 9, 2016, a multitude of amazing things took place. Babies were born. People got married. South Tahoe High won their first home football game and the new jumbotron made an official debut. The evening was filled with excitement. South Tahoe was up by point after point, the crowd was screaming in joy when a great play was made, but little did most know that two amazing teams were part of the explosive victory that night. A small and little recognized team sat at a temporary location beneath the new scoreboard, computers and coffee covering the table as they managed the new jumbotron. Every time South Tahoe’s successful team made a touchdown or field goal, the team below, comprised of DMA teacher Travis Steil and members of the DMA club Thunderclap, worked hard to put a corresponding animation up on the scoreboard. Two members actually created an animation about the snack shack within the evening itself, putting together a drawing in less than two hours to display. Though some were dubious about the school’s necessity for an expensive new scoreboard, many fears have been quelled as the Jumbotron is finally getting used and run: and by students, no less.

The Times Ah, September, the infamous ninthsupposedtobeseventh month of the year. If only Julius and Augustus hadn’t gotten so arrogant as to create and name entire months after themselves, the calendar would have been laid out so much better. Damn those pesky Romans… September at STHS is a lively month, packed with home football (and tennis and soccer and cross country), and school events. The leaves are starting to show spots of red and orange, the air chills, and the newness of school hasn’t worn off just yet , making spirits high. It’s the calm before the storm, Vikings. Be quick and get your warm coats out, for we in Tahoe are never sure when the times are right for snow to fall.

Varsity Football with Back to Back Friday Night Lights Wins By Emily Abuhajleh

The Vikings have been on fire recently with last week’s win against Fallon (3830) and the previous week’s triumph over Fernley (368). Unlike our easy win against Fernley, it was a nail biting last ten minutes against Fallon while the Greenwave fourth quarter rush scored twentytwo points in almost under ten minutes. Without Senior Jacob Bernal’s final touchdown pushing the Vikings’ score to 38, it might have been just too close for comfort. However, throughout the night Seniors Noah Jackson and Robert Cage’s

names boomed throughout the stadium after scoring touchdown after touchdown and other star players such as Junior McCallan Castles and Senior Jacob Bernal helped the

team score a total of 74 points over the two weeks, getting the Vikings two great wins. Collision after collision, tackle after tackle, touchdown after touchdown. Although it would seem an end score of 368 would indicate an easy game, the Vikings were still playing at their full capability against Fernley. Scoring a total of seven catches, two touchdowns, and a total of 136 receiving yards, it seemed as though Junior McCallan Castles owned the Viking field that Friday night. Alongside Castles, Seniors Noah Jackson and Robert Cage seemed unstoppable. The crowd could

lip sync with the loudspeaker as they announced yet another Vikings touchdown. However, the repetitive and almost anticipated scoring didn’t make the crowd any less excited or the energy of the stadium any less electric. Photos courtesy of Emily Doyle.

Sage Words: In the April of 2014, Flint Michigan’s water source changed from Detroit's water and sewage district to the untreated Flint river. Despite advisory from the Flint city council to revert back to purchasing water from the Detroit treatment plant, the state appointed Jerry Ambrose (flint's emergency manager who is in charge of all funds) issued a statement "Flint water today is safe by all Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality standards, and the city is working daily to improve its quality.” In other words, instead of buying safe water for a little more, the government chose to continue purchasing untreated, unsafe water and spending millions to try and convert it to clean water. Estimates of the cost for new pipes to replace lead pipes are from millions to 1.2 billion. Keep in mind, the citizens of Flint have to pay for this contaminated water. It is a requirement of parents to have running water by the Child Protection Agency, so if a household does not pay for water that is poisoning their children, the CPA is legally obligated to seize the children. A physician of Flint found that increased bloodlead levels has risen 5% (in 2015). Legionnaires Disease, coming from a bacteria that lives naturally in untreated water, has recently had an outbreak in Flint, infecting 87 recorded people, 10 of whom died. THMs (a chlorine byproduct) was found very early on, and long term exposure to this chemical causes cancer. It is incredible to me that these contaminants were found so early on, and still this injustice continued. On September 19th, 2016 (a day before I’m writing this) the city of Flint Michigan made it impossible to sue the state . They (gov snyder and his appointed board) enacted a law to prohibit lawsuits unless signed by the state. Therefore, people whose family members have died or had catastrophic health effects cannot get any compensation. Make no mistake. If this was a city of rich white people, this would have never happened. Our society and our corrupt government sees fit to enact violence against POC and especially low income POC. It is incredible that in a first world country such as ours, where it seems the upper middle class has everything it could ever want or need, an entire city could lose its fresh water supply, simply due to bureaucratic nonsense/money.

Submission of the Week: Free Advice by Freeman George: You know those stickers on apples? The other day I was sitting and eating my lunch when I pulled

from my bag the most gorgeous, red, crisp, giant, apple.

It was the 2nd Coming of apple Jesus, it was the Mona Lisa, the David, the Pantheon of apples. How

was I supposed to wait the 15 seconds it takes to remove a sticker? What was a small piece of wax paper

compared to the fruit messiah?

So fast forward to the next morning when, after my daily use of the porcelain throne, I catch a brief

glimpse of a certain sticker disappearing down the drain.

Now my advice is that you take that 15 seconds to remove that sticker because seeing it again is quite

disturbing, trust me.

The Numbers Edited by Matthew Barnett

“I hate math,” “When are we ever going to use this stuff anyway?” “I was never really good with

numbers.” We hear these statements everyday. Perhaps you have even said a few of these phrases yourself.

Alas, mathematics is not the boring, robotic and useless subject that every high schooler (and many adults)

seem to imply. That is why I am beginning a new miniseries which I am titling “Why you actually love

math but hate to admit it.”

In this series, I will explore the hidden uses of mathematics, little known insights and generally all

around mindblowing content. The first lesson will be on a field of mathematics rarely taught in high

school: game theory. Game theory is the study of, well, games. To be more specific, the subject examines

the choices of rational decision makers AKA rational agents. A rational agent is one that uses all the

knowledge available to it in order to form an optimal decision in a given situation. Typically, the games

studied in game theory are multifaceted, involving the consideration and anticipation of many rational

agents all plotting against each other.

And this is where you come into the story, dear reader. The survey I have put together below will

contain the first game. A valuable prize will be given to the winner, so sharpen your mind for the task.

Remember to think logically, and make sure you don’t take the game at face value. Good luck.

A Buddhist monk got an errand from his teacher: to meditate for exactly 45 minutes. He has no watch; instead he is given two incense sticks, and he is told that each of those sticks would completely burn in 1 hour. The sticks are not identical, and they burn with variant yet unknown rates (they are handmade). So he has these two incense and some matches: can he arrange for exactly 45 minutes of meditation? If you have the answer, send an email to [email protected] and we will publish your solution next issue!
