STRUCTURE: TENNIS SHACK

ADA STANDARD: 4.1.3(7), 4.13.5

PROBLEM: Doors into storage room and mechanical rooms provide a clear opening of less than 32” (measured at 25”).

SOLUTION: Widen doors into storage room and mechanical rooms to provide a clear opening of 32” when doors are open 90 degrees.

PROBLEM: Door knobs for storage room and mechanical room are round knobs and hard to operate.

SOLUTION: Replace knobs on storage room and mechanical room doors with lever handles or other types that can be easily operated.

PROBLEM: Clear floor space in front of door into mechanical room is less than 60” from the door (measured at 47”).

SOLUTION: Relocate vending machine to a different location that does block maneuvering space.

PROBLEM: Cabinets on south wall have more than a 4" projection and are set with the bottom edge between 27” and 80” above floor (measured at 60-1/2” height and 22” projection). Towel dispensers on south wall is set with bottom edge between 27” and 80” with over 4” projection (measured at 47” height and 8-1/2” projection).

SOLUTION: Remove cabinets or reposition. Reposition towel dispenser over permanent obstruction with maximum height of bottom edge below 27” height.

PROBLEM: Clearance inside each toilet room does not provide a 60” dia. circle or “T”-shaped turn area (measured at 40” x 32” in men and 40” x 45” women).

SOLUTION: Redesign toilet room to provide sufficient maneuvering room inside.

PROBLEM: Distance from side walls to centerline of toilets in both toilet rooms are less than 18” clearance (measured at 13-1/2” for men and 14” for women).

SOLUTION: Reset toilet to provide 18” clearance from centerline of toilet to side wall.





PROBLEM: No clearance is provided under the lavatory between the toilet rooms.

SOLUTION: Install a lavatory with 29” clearance to the bottom front edge and the top of the lavatory no more than 34” above the floor within the restroom.

PROBLEM: The bottom of the mirror above the lavatory is higher than 40” (measured at 51”).

SOLUTION: Install mirror with bottom of reflecting service no higher than 40” above the floor.

PROBLEM: Cabinet on south wall of men’s toilet room is between 27” and 80” above the floor and projects more than 4” (measured at 36-1/2” high and 5” projection).

SOLUTION: Install barrier directly below the cabinets at a maximum 27” height.





PROBLEM: The top of the toilet seats in both toilet rooms are not between 17” and 19” above the ground (measured at 15”).

SOLUTION: Install new toilets with seats at proper heights (17”-19”).





PROBLEM: Flush valves on the toilets are located on the incorrect side of the toilet; they should face away from the nearest wall.

SOLUTION: Relocate flush valves with handles on side facing the lavatory or use automatic valves.




ADA STANDARD: 4.16.4, 4.17.6

PROBLEM: There are no grab bars provided on the side walls or back walls in either toilet room.

SOLUTION: Install new grab bars on the side wall (40” long at 12” from the back wall) and on the back wall (36” long at 6” from the side wall) and 33”-36” above the floor.

SOLUTION: Elevate the adjacent asphalt path to bring the top of the path flush with the concrete pad under the drinking fountain. An alternate solution would be to add a ramp to the concrete pad under the drinking fountain. Another alternate solution would be to lower the concrete pad under the drinking fountain to the level of the adjacent asphalt pad.
