Welcome back to all members of our community.

It was wonderful to begin this term with a whole College chapel, where we also

installed the 2016 student leaders. The attendance and support of family and friends of these students was very much appreciated.

During the chapel, we affirmed the recently selected leaders of our College for 2016 and formally installed them into their positions. As part of this installation, they were presented with gifts that had both practical and symbolic meaning, especially in relation to their role and responsibilities as a leader. Some symbols found upon these gifts (and their related meaning) included;

• “Heart shape” - emotion, compassion, warmth and love.

• Dove - peace and harmony.• Crown of thorns – servanthood and humility.• Cross – Love, selflessness and sacrifice.• One of the gifts given to some of our leaders

was a Bible, God’s living word for direction, sustenance, inspiration and support. The rock and cornerstone of why and how we live.

A bible verse shared with our community at the Chapel was: “Whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.” - 1 Peter 4:11This verse was chosen as it has some special significance for our new leaders, but it can and does speak to all of us at Cornerstone.

This coming week will once again see the anniversary of a day that arguably changed the course of history. The modern shape of the Christian Church and the myriad of

denominations that exist right across it can be marked down to the influence of one man, and in particular, the influence of one act, that happened this week, 498 years ago. It was in a small German town called Wittenberg that a Roman Catholic Priest by the name of Martin Luther was prepared to take his reputation and his life in his hands, and prepared to denounce the teachings of the Church of his time. In particular, it was the misguided and even corrupted practice of issuing people with what were called ‘indulgences’ that got up Martin’s nose. For whatever reason, the Bible and its teachings had become less than the very first port of call in understanding how God goes about his work of salvation in the world, and the common people of that time and place were being duped into believing that one had to pay for their ticket into heaven.

Today this kind of thinking would seem grossly absurd, even to people who don’t believe. Our modern education has given us enough head-knowledge about the Bible for most to know that our money has nothing to do with our capacity to be saved. In 1517, however, people needed the Martin Luther’s of the world to set things straight for their benefit, and to be prepared to stand up for what they hoped he knew to be true about these things. Luther understood, without reservation, the clear promises God was making in Jesus’ name, and the implications this had on the lives of Christians. “For by grace you have been saved through faith” (Eph 2:8).

Thankfully, Martin Luther penned a series of 95 statements that he believed would draw

Attention ParentsDon’t forget to like our ‘Parent Connect’ page on facebook to connect with other parents and the College. Click the image below to visit the Cornerstone College Parent Connect.

Beyond using our gifts and talents to their fullest, we should remember to thank and glorify God through our thoughts, actions and words. He is the one who has given these gifts and talents to us and continues to guide and sustain us. We can and must rely on him. And very importantly, there needs to be an awareness that the manner in which the living, learning, relating and leading occurs at Cornerstone is a symbol of who we are and that God is within our community.

Each day this provides us with a wonderful opportunity and a great responsibility. It is one I have every confidence we are capable of taking hold of and meeting. May God bless us all this term in our learning, teaching, support and leadership.

Mr Craig FielkePrincipal

College Leader InstallationOn the first morning back to school this term our chapel served as an installation service for 38 new College and House leaders, elected by staff and students last term to serve in their roles for the next 12 months. Those who were completing their tenure as this year’s leaders were also honoured and acknowledged for their commitment to the roles they have held.

During the chapel it was our outgoing leaders who, in fact, led the service, and who were involved in personally presenting the ‘newbies’ with gifts to mark their installation.

Senior School leaders were presented with Bibles, while Middle School leaders were presented with devotion books written by popular Christian writer Max Lucado. All new leaders were also presented with key-rings – each with a symbol inscribed on it to help reflect the servant role the students were taking on. Mr Craig Fielke (College Principal) shared a message based on a verse in 1 Peter, encouraging new leaders to recognise the help of God within their new responsibilities in the school.

As a keyring holds the keys that give us access to all kinds of important things in life, our leaders were reminded of their access to God’s grace as they step into their new roles. It was a terrific service that marked an important occasion for our College, and it was great to see so many parents able to attend on the morning.

attention to how the Church had lost this message of grace. On 31 October 1517 (Reformation Day) he hammered his list onto the local castle doors. At the height of the controversies, as the storm around him grew, Luther stood in front of his opponents to declare the words, “Here I stand. I can do no other”. What followed, both in the immediate and the in the centuries since is a re-establishing of the truth that the Christian God is a gracious God, and that our standing before him has nothing to do with what we can and can’t achieve, but what Jesus achieves alone.

This week we can give thanks for Luther’s daring and dangerous actions, as he sought to ensure how incredibly powerful the real testimony of the Scriptures are, and how life-changing it is to know that God would send his Son into the world, to die on our behalf.

SATAC ApplicationsJust a friendly reminder that TafeSA applications for Semester 1 2016 close on 30 November. It is free to apply and government funding is available for some courses under the Work Ready scheme.

Students who have not yet applied for University have until Monday, 30 November to do so to receive equal consideration for most undergraduate courses. Existing applicants have until Monday, 4 January to change any

preferences and still receive equal consideration for most courses. Please remember to pay your application fee as soon as possible or you will not be considered.

Students requiring assistance with their TAFE and/or University applications should make an appointment with either Virginia Gare or Helen Mason.

Flinders UniTestLast Friday we had 14 Year 12 students complete the Flinders University “UniTest”. This test is entirely multiple choice and is completed online. It can be used in conjunction with Year 12 results to assist students to gain entry to selected Flinders University courses. It is free to sit and assesses students’ quantitative, critical and verbal reasoning. We wish these students all the best with their test results.

VET 2016Interviews for some AHSP’s VET courses will commence shortly. Students required to sit for an interview will receive letters in the mail from the host school notifying them of this. As our timetable for 2016 is finalised, I will be in contact with students and their families soon to discuss any necessary changes or impacts of VET on individual student timetables.

Applications will still be accepted for some VET courses who have not reached their desired enrolment numbers. In particular, there are still spaces available in the Massage for Sport & Health Course here at Cornerstone College. Interested students should contact Mr Anthony Doyle for more information.

ApprenticeshipsWith many 4th year apprentices finishing up their qualifications, many employers are now looking or have been looking for new apprentices for their businesses. If you are interested in gaining an apprenticeship (full-time or school-based), you should be making contact with employers and enquiring about this now. I would encourage any student looking at taking on an apprenticeship to complete Work Experience first to ensure that it is the right career and industry for them. Students who are offered a School-based apprenticeship MUST inform the College before signing any paperwork. This is to ensure that the necessary discussions can take place to work out how this will fit in with their academic program and any implications on potential future funded training.

Cornerstone Golf ClassicFriday, 9 October, 2015

It was a hot spring day for our annual Cornerstone Golf Classic this year, but that didn’t deter our participants from giving it their best. There were some very clever and classy shots played, and some shots that… well... didn’t quite make the hole! More importantly a lot of fun and connection happened between our golfers and the teams. We thoroughly enjoy this day where our College partners and friends come together to enjoy a hit of golf, some food, drinks and fresh air.

Our sincere thanks to those who supported the day. The funds raised will go towards much needed projects around the College.

English Week 2015This year’s celebration of language, literacy and literature was characterised by activities that allowed students to engage with written and spoken forms of communication.

During Extended Home Group times in the first half of the week, reading material was provided by our dedicated library staff and students also arranged their own texts for the purposes of silent independent reading. This then transitioned into a communal experience of literature in the Friday Home Group when classes were invited to view a reading of a picture book by a range of presenters via an online resource called StoryBox. The recommended text was entitled, Today We Have No Plans, written by Jane Godwin and illustrated by Anna Walker. While much younger children are the target audience, the text portrays the busy lives families lead and reminds us all that we need to ensure we enjoy the pleasures of days which transpire without structure, routines, deadlines and frenetic energy. The author suggests that we need time, space and opportunity to explore, create and select moments of interaction. The irony of the orchestrated activity which lead to a meditation upon NOT having plans was not lost on many participants.

The creative talents and oral communication skills of three Year 10 students constituted the activity in the middle of the week. Fae Gehren, Katie Dridan and our exchange student, Moritz Illing, performed their own poems to the students present on our cibo bello Plaza during lunchtime. The students successfully offered their Spoken Word pieces as an example of ‘pop-up’ art and are to be congratulated for the skill and confidence they demonstrated. According to friends of the performers, some in the audience captured moving images rather than stills so we are left to generate pictures in our own minds of students before a microphone delivering their stylized orations.

English Week is about the fundamental role our language and literacy skills play in our culture and life chances. The wonders of words and the imagined worlds we variously experience are often taken for granted. We are therefore pleased to celebrate English Week and are happy to promote the crucial learning and skills which help to define us as individuals in civilized society.

ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork AwardThe ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award recognises individuals who consistently strive to model leadership, initiative, teamwork and mateship in the school, and wider community. At a recent Assembly we were honoured to have Australian Defence Force representative Commander Steve Dunning with us to present this award to a Year 10 and Year 12 student.

The nature of attributes like servant leadership, teamwork, initiative and mateship means that they often occur ‘behind the scenes’ by individuals who demonstrate great humility in regards to their contributions. It is fantastic that through this award such individuals are encouraged in their endeavours and identified as role models for others.

Congratulations to Kendra Formosa and Fae Gehren who were the worthy recipients of this award.

The College Leaders led this service and encouraged the students to make the most of their opportunities here at Cornerstone and to grow into the young people God has called them to be.

Reading for pleasure has benefits!Reading for pleasure has benefits!

‘There is strong evidence that reading for pleasure can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression, and improve wellbeing throughout life.’

American author Anna Dewdney wrote in the Wall Street Journal: ‘When we open a book, and share our voice and imagination we learn to see the world through someone else’s eyes. When we read a book – no matter how stressed, no matter how challenged – we are drawn out of ourselves to bond with other human beings, and to see and feel the experiences of others. I believe that it is this moment that makes us human. In this sense, reading makes us human.’

Dewdney’s thoughts are backed up by academic research. In a Cambridge University study, Maria Nikolajeva found that ‘reading fiction provides training in developing and practising empathy and theory of mind’. In short, fiction helps us understand how other people feel and think. Another study, published in the ‘Journal of Applied Social Psychology’, explored the specific impacts of reading Harry Potter books and found that in children, high school and university students reading Harry Potter improved attitudes towards stigmatised groups.

So what’s going on in your brain when you read? Scientists at both Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University in the US have found that when you read about characters doing active things (running, flying), the parts of your brain that are involved in movement in real life are stimulated. Neuroscientist Gregory Berns, one of the authors of the Emery study, said ‘The neural changes that we found associated with physical sensation and movement systems suggest that reading a novel can transport you into the body of the protagonist…we already knew that good stories can put you in someone else’s shoes in a figurative sense. Now we’re seeing that something may also be happening biologically.’ (esciencecommons.blogpost.uk)

Recently the UK Reading Agency commissioned a review to look at ‘The Impact of Reading for Pleasure and Empowerment’. There is strong evidence that reading for pleasure can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and the risk of dementia, and improve wellbeing throughout life.’

The positive outcomes of reading included enjoyment, knowledge of the self and other people, social interaction, improved imagination, focus and concentration, relaxation and mood regulation, as well as improvements in communication abilities and longer-term education outcomes.

parentsteachersfriendsmessage from the college counsellor

Dr Justin says

PARENT guilt seems to be at an all-time high. Social media and endless blog articles outlining our mistakes seem to be leaving

us feeling dispirited, unmotivated and feeling like failures. As I talk with parents around the country, however, I’m full of optimism. Sure, we can all find ways to improve. But that’s life! In my parenting workshops in corporations, schools, and community groups, and in one-on-one parenting coaching sessions I am seeing good parents who are doing way better than they think, and they’re raising children who are going to make them so proud. I am also seeing too many parents worry, stress, and get anxious about whether or not they are doing a good enough job as parents. Here is 10 reasons you’re probably doing a better job than you think:

1 YOU LISTEN WHEN YOUR CHILD WANTS YOUR ATTENTIONThis may be the most important thing we

can do to be good parents. Our willingness to acknowledge our children, hear them, and show them that they are worthy of our attention is central to their development of resilience.

2 YOU SHOW THAT YOU CAREWe show we care by hugging our children, telling them they matter to us, paying

attention to their stories, and being there for them.

3 YOU SET LIMITSWhile most of us can improve the way we set limits, most parents I meet are making a

significant effort to set boundaries for their children. While too many rules leads to too many problems, research tells us that our children thrive and feel safe when they know what is OK to do & what is not OK.

Why you are a better parent than you think

4 YOU SHOW AN INTEREST IN THEIR FRIENDSOur children feel validated when they see us

taking an interest in their relationships. If you can name your children’s besties (and maybe even their parents), you’re probably doing OK.

5 YOU SHOW AN INTEREST IN THEIR SCHOOLINGChildren do better at school when parents

are invested in their academic success (so long as we don’t get too controlling). This is especially the case in high shcool.

6 YOU GIVE THEM WHATEVER EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES YOU CAN AFFORD

Do children need extra-curricular activities to thrive? No they don’t. However, most parents I meet recognise that sport, music, art, drama, science, church, or any other extra-curricular activity their children can participate in has the potential to enrich their lives, improve their academic performance, give them opportunities for growth, and expand their social circles. And most parents I meet are stretching themselves to give their children those chances because they love their children and because they’re doing the best they can for them.

7 YOU CONSOLE YOUR CHILD WHEN THEY ARE UPSETWhile there are some parents who get mad or

brush their children off when they’re upset, most parents are eager to embrace their children and show compassion and understanding when they are emotional, struggling, or stressed.

8 YOU READ TO THEMThe positive outcomes related to this one single activity are numerous. Most parents I

talk to relish the chance to read with their children (especially their younger children) as regularly as they’re able.

9 YOU SPEND EXTRA TIME WITH THEM, JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TOIt might be after school, or just before bed as

you lay with heads together on the pillow. Perhaps it’s Sunday morning on a bike ride or stroll through the park. You like being with your children and you find extra time to be together because you love them.

10 YOU SAY SORRYWhen you get it wrong, you do what you can to preserve and strengthen the

relationship. You tell them you love them regularly, and they can feel it. If your children feel your love and know it is sincere and unconditional they are experiencing one of the most vital protective factors for a resilient life that you can offer. We all know when it comes to parenting we can all do better, whether it’s reducing our personal digital pre-occupation, speaking more kindly and calmly, or being less punitive. But if you can say ‘Yep, I do that’ to most of the things on the list (and if your children would agree with you), then chance are your kids are going to turn out just fine. And your parenting? Honestly, you’re probably doing a better job than you think.

Summit to School On the last day of Term 3, Cornerstone held its annual Summit to School House event. Approximately 700 students and staff walked, ran or cycled from the Summit of Mount Barker back to the College. We were truly blessed with amazing weather – a beautiful spring day which was enjoyed by all. The walkers admired an amazing view as they walked down the summit onto Williams Road and the cyclists and runners took on the challenge of some very big hills on Springs Road. It was a successful day for MOORAK who won the event and took out the ‘Smelly Sandshoe Trophy’.

Congratulations to the following students for their individual achievements
