HUGH THOMAS - THE SECULAR CLERGY IN ENGLAND, Apr 8 2015 8:00 pm. The secular clergy - priests and other clerics outside of monastic orders - were among the

most influential and powerful groups in European society during the central Middle Ages. The secular clergy got their title from the Latin word for

world, saeculum, and secular clerics kept the Church running in the world beyond the cloister wall, with responsibility for the bulk of pastoral care

and ecclesiastical administration. This gave them enormous religious influence, although they were considered too worldly by many contemporary

moralists - trying, for instance, to oppose the elimination of clerical marriage and concubinage. Although their worldliness created many tensions, it

also gave the secular clergy much worldly influence. Contemporaries treated elite secular clerics as equivalent to knights, and some were as

wealthy as minor barons. Secular clerics had a huge role in the rise of royal bureaucracy, one of the key historical developments of the period.

They were instrumental to the intellectual and cultural flowering of the twelfth century, the rise of the schools, the creation of the book trade, and

the invention of universities. They performed music, produced literature in a variety of genres and languages, and patronized art and architecture.

Indeed, this volume argues that they contributed more than any other group to the Twelfth-Century Renaissance. Yet the secular clergy as a

group have received almost no attention from scholars, unlike monks, nuns, or secular nobles. In The Secular Clergy in England, 1066-1216, Hugh

Thomas aims to correct this deficiency through a major study of the secular clergy below the level of bishop in England from 1066 to 1216. About

the Author: Hugh M. Thomas received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1988 and has taught medieval history at the University of Miami since then.

He has published three previous books and a number of articles and has had fellowships at the University of Miami's Center for the Humanities,

the University of Pennsylvania, the National Humanities Center, All Souls College, Oxford, and Princeton University.

SENATOR WILLIAM FRIST - THE MOTHER AND CHILD PROJECT, Apr 9 2015 5:30 pm. Dozens of influential leaders have heard the pleas of mothers and children in

developing countries. Raising their voices to inspire a movement to increase healthy pregnancies and lower death rates, Melinda Gates, Kay

Warren, Bill Frist, Kimberly Williams Paisley, Michael W. Smith and more speak out about why people of faith must get involved in The Mother and

Child Project: Raising Our Voices for Health and Hope. Almost 287,000 women die each year because of pregnancy and birth complications. Many

orphans are left behind in the wake of this tragedy, and without a mother, many of those children die as well. If only enough people knew. We

have the resources to prevent this crisis, but we must take action. Fortunately, Hope Through Healing Hands, a nonprofit organization promoting

awareness for healthy mothers and children worldwide, is already spreading the word. Not only can we save lives, reduce abortions, and decrease

death rates, but also we can help build healthier, thriving families and bring stability and sustainability to families, communities and nations.

ANDREW BLITMAN - THE BLITMAN ANTHOLOGY, Apr 11 2015 5:00 pm. A paperback compilation of poems, essays, articles, and other writings by Andrew Blitman, this

book is geared toward high school and college students. "The Blitman Anthology" is designed to be quick and hard-hitting; its lessons originated

from the author's personal college experiences. A must-read for Millennials. About the Author: Born in Cooper City, Florida, Andrew Blitman has

always been passionate about science, nature, and the environment. He grew up watching the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, and credits

shows like "Wild Discovery", "Blue Planet", and "Walking with Dinosaurs" for instilling an intense appreciation for other living things. As he grew

older, he began to study biology and soon became hooked. In the process, Blitman became a writer. As Blitman studied marine affairs at the

University of Miami from 2008 to 2012, he incorporated science with an intense desire to help others. In May 2012, he compiled everything he

wrote before graduation into his first book, "The Blitman Anthology". In December 2012, Blitman travelled to Israel for the first time. When he

returned, he wrote and published his second book. "Birthright 2012: A Voyage into the Heart and Soul of Israel" follows his physical and spiritual

journey in the Land of Milk and Honey. It incorporates anecdotes with science, history, and poetry, and reads like a journal. Blitman’s goal in life is

to help others realize their potential as they understand the wonders of our beautiful planet. He firmly believes that individuals have the power to

change their circumstances for the better through hard work, self-awareness, and righteous determination. In May 2014, Blitman received his

Masters of Professional Science degree from the University of Miami.

LES STANDIFORD - WATER TO THE ANGELS - Apr 13 2015 8:00 pm. The author of Last Train to Paradise tells the story of the largest public water project ever

created—William Mulholland’s Los Angeles aqueduct—a story of Gilded Age ambition, hubris, greed, and one determined man who's vision

shaped the future and continues to impact us today. In 1907, Irish immigrant William Mulholland conceived and built one of the greatest civil

engineering feats in history: the aqueduct that carried water 223 miles from the Sierra Nevada mountains to Los Angeles—allowing this

small, resource-challenged desert city to grow into a modern global metropolis. Drawing on new research, Les Standiford vividly captures the

larger-then-life engineer and the breathtaking scope of his six-year, $23 million project that would transform a region, a state, and a nation at

the dawn of its greatest century. With energy and colorful detail, Water to the Angels brings to life the personalities, politics, and power—

including bribery, deception, force, and bicoastal financial warfare—behind this dramatic event. At a time when the importance of water is

being recognized as never before—considered by many experts to be the essential resource of the twenty-first century—Water to the Angels

brings into focus the vigor of a fabled era, the might of a larger than life individual, and the scale of a priceless construction project, and

sheds critical light on a past that offers insights for our future. Water to the Angels includes 8 pages of photographs. About the Author: LES

STANDIFORD is the bestselling author of twenty books, including Bringing Adam Home, the John Deal mystery series, and the works of

narrative history The Man Who Invented Christmas (a New York Times Editor's Choice) and Last Train to Paradise. He is the director of the

creative writing program at Florida International University in Miami, where he lives with his wife, Kimberly, a psychotherapist and artist.
