AMANDA HARRIS - THE FRUITS OF EDEN - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2015 - 8:00PM David Fairchild (1869–1954), son-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell and brother-in-law of

National Geographic editor Gilbert Grosvenor, shared the contagious spirit of scientific discovery and invention that characterized the late

nineteenth century. Like his influential relatives, Fairchild introduced revolutionary changes—not in technology or geography but in the American

diet. At a time when much American fare tended to be bland, Fairchild believed in the free exchange of food plants—preferably colorful, tasty

ones—among people around the world. He convinced the U.S. Department of Agriculture to sponsor daring overseas explorations to track down

and bring back foreign cultivars. Fairchild traveled to remote corners of the globe, searching for fruits, vegetables, and grains that would transform

the American diet. In Fruits of Eden, Amanda Harris vividly recounts the exploits of Fairchild and his small band of adventurers and botanists as

they traversed Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. They searched remote jungles, desert oases, and mountain valleys to return with new and

exciting plants packed with flavor. Their findings led to a renaissance not only at the dinner table but also in horticulture, providing diversity of

crops and economic growth for farmers across the country. But not everyone supported this burgeoning form of globalization. In the early

twentieth century the scientific community began to be concerned about invasive species. World War I fanned the flames of xenophobia in

Washington, and adversaries believed Fairchild’s discoveries would contaminate the purity of native crops. As Fairchild’s work became tangled in

these and other controversies, his government expeditions ceased Yet his legacy lives on in today’s modern kitchen, where navel oranges, Meyer

lemons, honeydew melons, soybeans, avocados, and many other once-exotic foods are now savored with delight. About the Author: Amanda

Harris, author of Fruits of Eden, was for many years a reporter and editor at Newsday, the Long Island and New York City daily newspaper. She

lives in Manhattan and Montcabrier, France, with her husband, Drew Fetherston. She is also the granddaughter of Alice Barton Harris and the

daughter of Robin Franklin Harris, who was Marian Fairchild’s godson.

JON MILLS - PRIVACY IN THE NEW MEDIA - THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2015 - 8:00PM. Balancing personal dignity and first amendment concerns has become increasingly

challenging. In today’s new media age, technology moves faster than the law, enabling modern media outlets to commit intrusions into private

endeavors for the sake of a story. With few legal limits governing the dissemination of information online, individuals—whether news affiliates or

anonymous writers—can become publishers, freely divulging the details of citizens’ private lives. While the history of free speech and press has

noble origins rooted in democratic theory, unlimited and unrestricted internet speech has left thousands of victims in its wake. Can society

protect those who are harassed, stalked, and misrepresented online while maintaining our constitutional freedoms? Jon Mills, one of the nation’s

top privacy experts and advocates, maps out this complex problem. Tracing the history of the press in tandem with its regulation, Mills argues that

technology has always evolved more quickly than the laws restricting its use. Old laws chase new media, raising original questions of how privacy

and modern news outlets can coexist. Mills tackles those issues by looking at solutions already implemented by the European Union and

comparing them to the obsolete privacy laws still extant in the United States. In his search for solutions, Mills closely examines an array of

noteworthy cases, including suits made by Jennifer Anniston, Kate Middleton, Naomi Campbell, Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona, and the

family of deceased SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. In a global marketplace of instantly shared ideas, freedom of expression offers consumers a

wealth of knowledge, but a lack of gatekeeping threatens intellectual space and individuals’ personal lives. Mills traces that sharp edge between

the right of privacy and the right of the public to know—between the limitless source of private information and society’s craving for it all. About

the Author: Jon L. Mills, professor of law at the University of Florida, has litigated high-profile cases in privacy and constitutional law, representing

clients including Dale Earnhardt’s widow. He is former dean of the Levin College of Law, former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives,

and the author of Privacy: The Lost Right.

BRAD MELTZER - THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW -SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 - 7:00PM. There are stories no one knows. Hidden stories. I find those stories for a living.

To most, it looks like Beecher White has an ordinary job. A young staffer with the National Archives in Washington, D.C., he's responsible for

safekeeping the government's most important documents . . . and, sometimes, its most closely held secrets. But there are a powerful few who

know his other role. Beecher is a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year-old secret society founded by George Washington and charged with

protecting the Presidency. Now the current occupant of the White House needs the Culper Ring's help. The alarming discovery of the buried arm

has the President's team in a rightful panic. Who buried the arm? How did they get past White House security? And most important: What's the

message hidden in the arm's closed fist? Indeed, the puzzle inside has a clear intended recipient, and it isn't the President. It's Beecher, himself.

Beecher's investigation will take him back to one of our country's greatest secrets and point him toward the long, carefully hidden truth about the

most shocking history of all: family history. About the Author: Brad Meltzer is the author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers The Inner Circle, The

Book of Fate, and six other bestselling thrillers. His nonfiction books, Heroes for My Son and Heroes for My Daughter, were also New York Times

bestsellers. He is the host of the History Channel series Brad Meltzer's Decoded and the Eisner Award-winning writer of Justice League of America.

A graduate of the University of Michigan and Columbia Law School, he currently lives in Florida. You can find much more about him at

www.BradMeltzer.com. You can also see what he's doing right now at Facebook.com/bradmeltzer and Twitter.com/bradmeltzer.
