GENERAL CARLOS JULIO PEÑALOZA - FIDEL’S DAUPHIN - Apr 15 2015 6:30 pm. The career military man and retired general Carlos Julio Peñaloza saw combat against

the Castro-Communist urban and rural guerrillas in the 1960s in Venezuela. In 1984 being Superintendent of the Venezuelan Military Academy he

discovered and denounced Chavez, but the Army´s chiefs protected him. In 1989 being the Venezuelan Army´s Chief of Staff he detained Hugo

Chávez for conspiring against the State, but President Carlos Andrés Pérez ordered to free him. Two years later Chávez led the failed 4F coup

d’état. In his first book El Imperio de Fidel, or Fidel’s Empire, the author relates the meddling of Fidel Castro in Venezuela until 1968, and in this his

second book, the narratives takes us up to the failed coup attempt of February 4, 1992. This coup was a product of the "Foro de Sao Paulo"

conspiracy hatched by Lula Da Silva and Fidel Castro. Chávez was made-to-order by Fidel Castro and by other communist artisans such as Douglas

Bravo and Alí Rodríguez Araque who collaborated together with Venezuelan politicians and military chiefs who created, protected and developed

his public persona. Nicolas Maduro cameo appearance in the plot is escribed. The crucial role of ex-president Rafael Caldera is also exposed.

Chávez was the product of his thirst for power powerfully spurred by his eloquence and charisma. About the book Carlos Alberto Montaner,

journalist and writer gave his opinion as follows: “General Peñaloza has written a book about Chávez and Fidel that is indispensable to understand

how and why Venezuela has become an exploited Cuban colony and guinea pig for the Forum of Sao Paulo. The research is impeccable and

substantial, which makes it valuable for both Cubans and Venezuelans. Peñaloza was Chief of the Venezuelan Army having access to top secret

intelligence reports. If Carlos Andrés Pérez had listened to him, the history of Venezuela would be different. This is one of those works that will

endure through time.

HUGH THOMAS - THE SECULAR CLERGY IN ENGLAND - Apr 15 2015 8:00 pm. The secular clergy - priests and other clerics outside of monastic orders - were among

the most influential and powerful groups in European society during the central Middle Ages. The secular clergy got their title from the Latin word

for world, saeculum, and secular clerics kept the Church running in the world beyond the cloister wall, with responsibility for the bulk of pastoral

care and ecclesiastical administration. This gave them enormous religious influence, although they were considered too worldly by many

contemporary moralists - trying, for instance, to oppose the elimination of clerical marriage and concubinage. Although their worldliness created

many tensions, it also gave the secular clergy much worldly influence. Contemporaries treated elite secular clerics as equivalent to knights, and

some were as wealthy as minor barons. Secular clerics had a huge role in the rise of royal bureaucracy, one of the key historical developments of

the period. They were instrumental to the intellectual and cultural flowering of the twelfth century, the rise of the schools, the creation of the

book trade, and the invention of universities. They performed music, produced literature in a variety of genres and languages, and patronized art

and architecture. Indeed, this volume argues that they contributed more than any other group to the Twelfth-Century Renaissance. Yet the secular

clergy as a group have received almost no attention from scholars, unlike monks, nuns, or secular nobles. In The Secular Clergy in England, 1066-

1216, Hugh Thomas aims to correct this deficiency through a major study of the secular clergy below the level of bishop in England from 1066 to

1216. About the Author: Hugh M. Thomas received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1988 and has taught medieval history at the University of Miami

since then. He has published three previous books and a number of articles and has had fellowships at the University of Miami's Center for the

Humanities, the University of Pennsylvania, the National Humanities Center, All Souls College, Oxford, and Princeton University.

THANE ROSENBAUM - HOW SWEET IT IS Apr 18 2015 7:00 pm. Set in Miami Beach in 1972, HOW SWEET IT IS!, by critically acclaimed novelist, Thane Rosenbaum

follows the Posner family—two Holocaust survivors, Sophie and Jacob and their son, Adam—doing everything they can to avoid one another in a city

with an infinite supply of colorful diversions. In ’72 Miami hosted both the Republican and Democratic political conventions and experienced the rise

of the counterculture, the Cold War, and the desegregation of the old South. In the style of E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime, HOW SWEET IT IS! is populated

and enriched by the presence of many historical characters of the day including Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Isaac Bashevis Singer,

Meyer Lansky, and Fidel Castro. Miami Beach was to be the Posner’s salvation. Instead they discover that it is not a place of camouflage—all that

sunshine highlighted the very things they wished to forget. In this hilarious novel, Sophie becomes a key figure in the Jewish Mafia as crime boss

Meyer Lansky exploits her talents in a desperate attempt to restore the Jewish Mafia to its former glory and bring legalized gambling to Florida.

Matching wits with the master Yiddish storyteller, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jacob bemoans his fate at having to cope with Sophie, his irrepressible wife,

and her new fame and relationships. And Adam acquires valuable lessons on standing one’s ground from the World’s Fastest Man, Bob Hayes, and

learns to pitch out of a jam from an umpire who may or may not be Cuba’s dictator, Fidel Castro. The Posners find their lives quickly turning into a

Disney World of funhouse mirrors and chaotic rides that give them front row seats through a transformational year in American culture, politics and

world history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Thane Rosenbaum is the author of the critically acclaimed novels, The Stranger Within Sarah Stein, The Golems

of Gotham, Second Hand Smoke, and the novel-in-stories, Elijah Visible, which received the Edward Lewis Wallant Award for the best book of Jewish

American fiction. His articles, reviews and essays appear frequently in many national publications including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal,

Washington Post, and The Huffington Post, among other national publications. He is a Senior Fellow at New York University School of Law where he

directs the Forum on Law, Culture & Society. For more information visit http://www.thanerosenbaum.com/.
