ILAN EHRLICH - EDUARDO CHIBÁS: THE INCORRIGIBLE MAN OF CUBAN POLITICS - Saturday, August 1, 2015 - 2:00pm. This comprehensive biography of Eduardo René

Chibás (1907–1951) traces the life and times of Cuba’s most popular and charismatic politician during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Chibás, whose

admirers included young Fidel Castro, emphasized honesty in Cuban public life and promised to sweep away corrupt politicians during his popular

Sunday broadcasts. His ties with supporters, many of whom knew him simply as “Eddy,” were closer and more informal than any previous Cuban

politician. During his 1948 presidential campaign, Chibás often hurled himself into the arms of adoring supporters after speeches. Such gestures

were met with wonder and disgust by politicians more accustomed to buying votes than winning hearts. His suicide in 1951 dashed the dreams of

his followers—who hoped he would deliver an honest government that provided services for the island’s poor and respected Cuba’s progressive

1940 constitution. His death, which was followed seven months hence by a military coup and eight years later by Castro’s revolution, represents

one of the great what ifs of Cuban politics. This seminal work explores Chibás’s life in order to explain the nature of Cuban politics from the mid-

twentieth century to today. Ilan Ehrlich is assistant professor of history at Bergen Community College.

JENNINE CAPO CRUCET - MAKE YOUR HOME AMONG STRANGERS - Wednesday, August 5, 2015 - 8:00pm. When Lizet-the daughter of Cuban immigrants and the first

in her family to graduate from high school-secretly applies and is accepted to an ultra-elite college, her parents are furious at her decision to leave

Miami. Just weeks before she's set to start school, her parents divorce and her father sells her childhood home, leaving Lizet, her mother, and

Leidy-Lizet's older sister, a brand-new single mom-without a steady income and scrambling for a place to live. Amidst this turmoil, Lizet begins her

first semester at Rawlings College, distracted by both the exciting and difficult moments of freshman year. But the privileged world of the campus

feels utterly foreign, as does her new awareness of herself as a minority. Struggling both socially and academically, she returns to Miami for a

surprise Thanksgiving visit, only to be overshadowed by the arrival of Ariel Hernandez, a young boy whose mother died fleeing with him from

Cuba on a raft. The ensuing immigration battle puts Miami in a glaring spotlight, captivating the nation and entangling Lizet's entire family,

especially her mother. Pulled between life at college and the needs of those she loves, Lizet is faced with difficult decisions that will change her

life forever. Urgent and mordantly funny, Make Your Home Among Strangers tells the moving story of a young woman torn between generational,

cultural, and political forces; it's the new story of what it means to be American today. About the Author: JENNINE CAPÓ CRUCET is the author of

Make Your Home Among Strangers and a story collection, How to Leave Hialeah, winner of the Iowa Short Fiction Award, John Gardner Book Prize,

Devil's Kitchen Reading Award, and named a Best Book of the Year by the Miami Herald and the Latinidad List. A PEN/O. Henry Prize winner and

Bread Loaf Fellow, she was a Picador Guest Professor at the University of Leipzig, Germany. She was raised in Miami and is currently assistant

professor of English and Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kirkus Review: “… Here, perfectly articulated through Lizet, is the

experience of being a first-generation child of immigrants in America—the lack of cultural capital, the casually racist comments of fellow students,

the facade of campus diversity. "I'd yet to see a Latino professor on the Rawlings campus, though I knew from pictures in the school's guidebook

that there were a few somewhere," Lizet wistfully notes. Here, too, is worldbuilding at its finest—Crucet crafts a rich setting and supporting

characters to go along with her astute cultural analysis. Yet, while it's clear what Lizet doesn't want—expulsion, her boyfriend—what she wants is

less clear. Perhaps this is the point; she's a college freshman. But above all, in Lizet's story, we have a thrilling, deeply fulfilling journey of a young

woman stepping into her own power. This debut novel from Crucet (How to Leave Hileah, 2009) heralds the birth of a talented novelist to watch.”

DULCE CANDY RUIZ - THE SWEET LIFE - Thursday, August 6, 2015 - 6:30pm. Since posting her first makeup tutorial in 2008, Dulce Candy has become one of the top

beauty stars on YouTube, boasting more than 2 million subscribers and garnering hundreds of millions of views of her bright and energetic videos.

But before she became a style icon and a role model to millions of young women, Dulce struggled to make her way in the world. Having

emigrated with her family from Mexico to the United States when she was six years old, Dulce battled depression and low self-esteem as a

teenager and eventually enlisted in the army in an attempt to turn her life around. It was here, on the battlefields of Iraq, that she finally

uncovered and embraced her true passion—fashion and beauty—and gained the confidence to move on from her past, follow her dream, and

launch what would become her wildly successful brand. The Sweet Life chronicles Dulce Candy’s inspiring story, showing that anyone can be

successful no matter their background and sharing the hard-won lessons that helped transform her from a shy, self-doubting teenager into a

confident business woman and beauty expert. According to Dulce, you can’t live the sweet life until you accept who you are—flaws and all—and

take chances—knowing that failure is just a part of learning and fear is a sign that you’re trying something new and exciting. Drawing on

anecdotes from her own life and career, Dulce offers advice on building a personal brand (“Know what makes you different”), building confidence

(“Fake it till you make it”) and balancing the personal and the professional (“Don’t settle when you settle down”). She also emphasizes the

importance of both inner and outer beauty, encouraging women to love themselves, ignore the critics, and flaunt their own original style. Part

memoir, part manifesto, The Sweet Life is a fun, inspirational guide for any woman who wants to find success and happiness without

compromising who she is. About the Author: Dulce Candy Ruiz is the creator of the beauty and fashion channel Dulce Candy on YouTube and runs

the popular lifestyle blog DulceCandy.com. She has been featured in many publications, including Seventeen, Allure, and Glamour, and on television

shows such as Good Morning America, the Rachael Ray Show, and Lifetime’s Project Runway. In 2013, Latina magazine named her one of their

Latinas of the Year. She lives in California with her husband and son.

JULIANA BARBASSA IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL DEIBERT - DANCING WITH THE DEVIL IN THE CITY OF GOD - Friday, August 7, 2015 - 8:00pm. A self-

described “hybrid creature,” Juliana Barbassa, award-winning journalist and former Rio de Janeiro correspondent for the Associated Press, has

lived in Iraq, Malta, Libya, Spain, France, and the United States—but her heart has always belonged to her native city of Rio. Her debut book,

DANCING WITH THE DEVIL IN THE CITY OF GOD: Rio de Janeiro on the Brink, is a testament of her love, a painstakingly researched and visceral

portrait of Rio’s struggles for change after being catapulted into the international spotlight by the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Armed

with her razor-sharp prose and keen reporter’s instinct, Juliana digs deep into the story to help us understand what’s really happening on the

streets of Rio today (the good, the bad, and the maddening). She tells a fast-paced, intriguing tale of the Brazilian government’s preparations for

the World Cup and Olympics, its efforts to strengthen the economy and to combat organized crime…and the often devastating consequences of

these actions. But Juliana never loses sight of the human face of Rio. She introduces us to the families fighting to retain their homes in the Rio’s

infamous favelas, the Cariocas selling their flesh in the city’s red-light district, and the ecstatic elation (and ultimate devastation) that grips the

city’s citizens during the 2014 World Cup. The result is a rich account of a city composed of extremes, where middle-class citizens have iPhones

but lack basics like safe sanitation and quality education, where the lush landscape is marred by mountains of trash and by sewage, and where

the Brazilian reputation for live-and-let-live hedonism is tempered by racism, sexism, and one of the world’s highest murder rates. Juliana writes

about “this city of extremes”—one she loves deeply, despite its flaws—with the access a native but the perspective of an outsider, making her the

perfect guide for the reader on this fascinating journey. Readers who are interested in international affairs, urban development, travel, and the

social and culture dynamic will be drawn to this book’s rich details, accessible writing, and thoughtful analysis. But DANCING WITH THE DEVIL IN

THE CITY OF GOD’s appeal extends to anyone who is curious about this most seductive of cities—one that will be front-and-center on the world

stage for years to come. About the Author: Juliana Barbassa holds bachelor’s degrees in Spanish Literature and journalism from UT Austin and

master’s degrees in Latin American studies and journalism from UC Berkeley. As a journalist she earned a Katie Journalism Award, an Emerging

Journalist award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and a John L. Dougherty Award from the APME, the Associated Press

Managing Editors. She reported for the Associated Press for ten years and served as its Rio de Janeiro correspondent from 2010 through 2013. An

expert in Brazilian current affairs, Juliana has also made various appearances on programs such as the BBC, NPR, Public Radio International, and

HuffPostLive to discuss such events as the deadly floods, mudslides, the violence in Rio’s favelas, and Brazil’s preparations for the 2014 World Cup

and 2016 Olympics. Michael Deibert is the author of In the Shadow of Saint Death: The Gulf Cartel and the Price of America's Drug War in Mexico,

The Democratic Republic of Congo: Between Hope and Despair and Notes from the Last Testament: The Struggle for Haiti. He can be followed at

twitter.com/michaelcdeibert. He lives in Florida. With Live Performances by: Rose Max and Ramatis. Brazilian Jazz: Bossa Nova, Samba with a

beautiful voice of Rose Max and a genuine Brazilian acoustic guitar of Ramatis! It's a perfect mix of the soulful Brazilian Music style! Rose Max and

Ramatis always take the audience on a trip to the beaches, mountains, streets and bars of Rio de Janeiro without ever leaving the room.
