Principal’s News Home School Partnership & Values

Further to the final newsletter of Term 2 which outlined the school review panel’s interest in how we are supporting the

Home-School partnership, I have received feedback from parents who could not attend the forum last week but wanted to

contribute. With that in mind, please find below the key questions discussed at the forum. It is important for us to receive as

much feedback as possible, as this information will shape the next 10 years at Mulgrave Primary School.

We would also like feedback on our school values, as the current set reflect a wellbeing program that we no longer run and

are perhaps not easily understood by all children. In effect, we are looking at values that will encapsulate the school’s ethos

well into the future. One of the recommendations coming out of the review is to simplify our values and perhaps use some

key elements as part of a code of conduct. We will do this in conjunction with the students, but would very much appreciate

the feedback of families. Once you’ve had a chance to think about the questions below, please email your response to me via

the school account: [email protected].

What are some of the ways we can enhance the home/school partnership?

How can we improve student motivation?

How can we improve school connectedness?

What roles can parents play in supporting students at home and at school?

How can MPS improve our communication with parents?

Can you name our values?

Do you know why we have them?

Do they reflect our school community?

Do they reflect our hopes for the children?

What would your top three values be?

Should we work our values in with the initials ‘MPS’?

PARENT OPINION SURVEY 2017 Each year the Department of Education and Training (DET) supports schools in conducting a survey to find out what

parents think.

The Parent Opinion Survey is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at every school in Victoria,

with roughly 30 per cent of parents invited to participate. All responses to the survey are anonymous, but the

information received will help our school gain an understanding of how you view our school climate, student

engagement, and relationships. Our school will use the results to inform school planning and improvement strategies.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. It can be

accessed from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August and is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin,

Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Results will be sent back to our school at the end of September.

As a relatively new principal to the school, I look forward to receiving the survey data which will also correspond with

the writing of our next strategic plan. This will be the fourth forum for parents to provide feedback to the school in 2017

and whilst I do not wish to overload families, hearing from you as I learn more about the school is extremely helpful, as

it allows me to better understand what you want for your children. Of course, my door is always open should you feel

like dropping in for a chat and discussing how we can best help all of our students improve.

Parent Requests Attached is a document seeking input into your child’s learning needs in 2018. As parents are undoubtedly aware,

requests need to be based on educational and social grounds. We do not accept requests for specific teachers, as it

invariably leads to unbalanced classes, which is not fair for the majority. We will, of course, be mindful of student needs

as we plan for 2018 and have already begun identifying groupings that will maximise student potential and engagement

at school. The composition of classes takes considerable planning and we regret that not every request can be met,

however we will strive to do so. All decisions are based on student needs first, second and third. Could I please ask that

all requests are returned to me via the office by no later than Friday August, 18th.

School Production Finally, a reminder that Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits is now less than 4 weeks away. The students, staff and many

parent helpers are working feverishly to bring you a wonderful production. Having had the privilege of observing some

of the rehearsals to date, I’m sure the students will put on a show to remember!!!

O ne thing that is very apparent after more than 20 years of parent

education is that there are lots of right ways to bring up kids.

I reckon there are just a few essentials to parenting, and if you get them covered off,

I think you can freestyle the rest and things will be just fine.

Let’s get it down to two basics – your kids feeling loved and feeling safe. If this is

happening, I think you have already got a pass mark as a

parent.

By the way, please note that I didn’t say ‘loving your kids’ was the basic, I said that

kids feel loved.

I’m sure every parent loves their children, but things get in the way and the child

doesn’t always actually feel that love.

Maybe it is anger, or discipline that is too harsh, maybe it is too much busyness in

the home, perhaps a parent isn’t able to be with the child. Learning new and

better ways to show love to your children should be a top task for parents.

But I don’t want to over-emphasise the negatives. I want you to catch the positive

message – that even with thousands of fantastic parenting books and websites that

give good advice (including ours at Parenting Place!), the basics of parenting are

simple.

If you get love and safety right, it’s amazing how much else you can get ‘wrong’ and

still give your kids a great childhood. Article from Parenting Place

Extend OSHC at MGPS

Hi Everyone,

During the last couple weeks, the children have been engaged in several interesting activities to excel their

developmental skills.

In art and craft, we explored wool art. Many children designed beautiful nature pictures with colourful wool and

water paint, they looked fantastic. We also have been working towards our kid’s club competition. It is great to see such

enthusiasm for it and see how our artists are expressing their creative ideas so wonderfully! I wish everyone the best of

luck for the contest.

In Science Slime making was fun. It was interesting to compare two substances and how one material congealed and

others didn't. In another experiment, we made colourful lava lamps and learnt the density of the fluid. Our master chef

baked delicious apple cinnamon muffins.

We celebrated Amelia's 6th birthday with yummy banana cake, thank you to: Natasha, Thasith, Flynn and Brooke for

baking during the morning session.

Beside from these activities we enjoyed solving puzzles, board games, constructions, reading and many physical

activities such as: Window, Mat ball, Farmer Sam, Octopus, bouncing bubbles, Memory tag, Rock paper scissor relay,

Fruit salad, Guards and Soldiers, Cops and Robbers, Capture the flag, dodge ball and outdoor play.

Kind regards

Meena

The Program activities for next week are:

Monday 7th August : Cooking - Apple Crumble

Tuesday 8th August : Police Incursion

Wednesday 9th August : Art and Craft - Aboriginal art

Thursday 10th August : Team game - Cops and Robbers

Friday 11th August : Sewing - Pencil Case

To check out what’s on visit our website at extend.com.au and book via the Parent Portal.
