Last Chance to Save Behana Gorge

The stories and the history behind Gordonvale's water tower have been preserved for future generations at the new-look Norman Park.The former water tower, which served the town from 1935-1953 has been dismantled. But with the base retained, restored and capped with a decorative frame, the remnants now stand as a monument to the town's history, taking pride of place at Norman Park.

It is accompanied by interpretive signage, concrete stencilling depicting the shadows of the tower and infused with images of Japanese bombers in tribute to the region's links with World War II and improved public infrastructure. Having doubled as a watch tower during World War II, the water tower was decommissioned in 1953, after Behana Gorge became the primary water supply for the area.

The structure has stood dormant since, gradually falling victim to time and wear as concrete cancer set in."The deterioration got to the point where it was no longer safe to allow people near the tower and it was blocked off," Division 1 Councillor Steve Brain said.

“It was at that point that we determined the best thing we could do was to remove the tower, but not without first documenting its history and creating a piece of local memorabilia in its place. "Residents were involved in the design process and I'm pleased to say that the end result is a fitting

In addition to the commemorative components, the playground has been extended and a new barbecue, picnic shelter and pathways installed. "It's really increased the usability of the park and turned what was an eyesore into a feature in itself," Cr Brain said.

"Norman Park is an important community space for Gordonvale and these improvements will be welcomed by residents."

Behana Gorge is a pristine area situated just 6km south of Gordonvale, filled with swimming holes and walking tracks and very popular with families from Cairns, Gordonvale and surrounding areas.However Behana Gorge is under threat as the Queensland government is insisting that Cairns Regional Council include a site at Behana Gorge, as listed KRA38 (key resource area) into their town plan. Cairns Regional Council do not want it included, they have rejected three applications since 1992 for this site to be developed into a quarry. This is our last chance to save Behana Gorge. The people have the power, and we need your written voice, now, the deadline is 10 December 2014. We ask for your

support in stating your objection to Queensland Government that we the people do not want KRA38 included in the town plan, and request that KRA38 to be removed from the Single State Planning Policy and all associated mapping. With this in mind concerned residents commenced a Facebook page and after only commencing on November 13 already have over ten thousand likes. There is also a website setup up in a last ditch effort to save Behana Gorge. You can voice your concerns either though the Facebook page www.facebook.com/savebehanagorge or on the website www.savebehanagorge.info. We need your help to save this pristine area from being turned into a future quarry.

Kylie Day would like to introduce Sam the horses’ new stable mate Big Ted. Ted is a Clydesdale from Brisbane and is two years old.Together with Sam, Ted will be at Carols by Candle Light and other community events in Gordonvale to raise money for the Variety club. Big Ted has been in training for the past four months and in that time Kylie has also taught her niece Chanel to drive Big Ted.

Chanel will be the driver at this years at Carols by Candle light. Carols will be the first charity event for both of horses. Cost of rides will be four dollars and all money goes to charity.

From the first of December Sam the horse and Big Ted will be taking Santa around Gordonvale and more information including dates times and destinations can be gained from Sam the Horse face book page.

Mulgrave Aquifer UpdateThe Water and Waste Committee has received its third report from the Mulgrave River Aquifer Community Reference Panel. The report from the independent community based panel recommends that Council should not progress with the proposed Mulgrave River Aquifer Scheme.This recommendation will be forwarded to Council's Water Security Advisory Group (WSAG), which is currently investigating all available options for longer-term water supply and management. The WSAG is expected to present its final report and recommendations to Council in March 2015. Council will continue to collect data from a groundwater monitoring system installed to assess the feasibility of the proposed aquifer project.

RSL Youth Development Award ReportNathaniel HonneffAt the end of last year I had the great honour of being a recipient of the RSL Youth Development Award which allowed me to travel to Europe in order to study piano technique and composing.At the end of last term I began what would be a four week adventure throughout Europe learning from some of the most talented musicians Europe had to offer.

During my time in France and Germany I was privileged to study under the wing of Prof. Allan Fraser, one of the greatest musical masterminds this century has been offered. He taught me a great deal and I was extremely glad to be in his presence. He explained to me a way of playing piano with your whole body (as odd as that sounds) and creating an overall feeling of wholeness.

I also worked with a number of other professors and a composer and during this time I was greatly enriched in knowing them. My favourite composer and idol Beethoven once stated, “Do not study your art, but force your way into its secrets, for it and knowledge can raise mankind to the divines.”

During my time abroad this became the overall foundation whilst I was overseas, however the same principles still remain now that I am back at school.

I would like to thank Mrs Carr who played a fundamental role in helping me get this scholarship, and encourage all students of Gordonvale State High School to head to the RSL Youth Development Scholarship page through Google and apply for this scholarship.

It was a great lifetime experience and I am grateful to all those who made it possible.

Eliminate Dengue Field Trial UpdateIn 2011, we released mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia in Gordonvale, with community support and government approval. Wolbachia are naturally occurring bacteria that, when present in the Aedes aegypti mosquito – reduce its ability to pass dengue between people.

The Wolbachia mosquitoes then breed with wild mosquitoes and pass on Wolbachia to the next generations through their eggs. We are pleased to see that over three years after we finished releases, Wolbachia has remained at high levels in the local Aedes aegypti mosquito population. This tells us that our method is sustainable and is helping to inform further field trials in Australia and overseas.

While we expect the risk of local dengue transmission to be reduced in Gordonvale, we remind you to protect yourself as usual from mosquito bites to reduce your risk of exposure to all mosquito-borne diseases. Nominations are now open in the most prestigious of community awards programs. The Cairns Region 2015 Australia Day Awards will be presented in seven categories, including the Citizen of the Year.“There is no greater honour than to be recognised by your own community," Mayor Bob Manning said. "And there is no greater way to say 'thank you' than by nominating someone for an Australia Day Award."Cr Manning was today joined by 2014 Cairns Citizen of the Year Ian Allen to open the nominations for the 2015 Awards. "Ian is a shining example of the reason we have these awards," Cr Manning said.

"He has given so much to the community over more than three decades – most notably through the Lions Club and as the President of the Cairns Show Society. He has worked tirelessly for 35 years to bring to the community an annual celebration of Cairns' history and culture for thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy. Under his guidance as president, the Cairns Show has grown to be the largest regional show in Australia with a sideshow alley that rivals Brisbane's Ekka. It is people like Ian who make things happen in our community. But many of these wonderful people tend to go on unknown to the broader community. It is often those who give the most that seek the least reward. We want to recognise these individuals for their contributions and efforts. Gordonvale Girl Guides Melissa Creek & Leah Georgeson were recently awarded the Queen's Guide Award for Girl Guides Queensland. Melissa & Leah have been members of the Gordonvale Guide Group for more than 10 years.The two girls along with 12 other Queensland Guides attended a ceremony at Government house, Wednesday, 12th November where they were formally recognised for their achievements and presented with their certificates by Mrs De Jersey (Patron of Girl Guides Queensland). The Queen's Guide award is the Peak Achievement Award for youth members of Guides Australia, providing girls with an opportunity for extraordinary personal development and greater self-awareness.

The award criteria comprised of 7 challenges base on the fundamentals of Girl Guides, an interest to develop and extend and a Focus Challenge in which is presented to the Girl Guides of QLD Youth Awards committee. Gordonvale recipients selected the Outdoors Focus undertaking water expeditions, and camping weekends completing their specified criteria. The girls are now extending their role within the Guiding community and encourage any girls who are looking for that extra challenge to consider Girl Guides. Gordonvale Creatives Update The Un-Named Cyclone of 10th March 1918At the moment, Gordonvale Creatives appear able to plan the next exhibition in the gallery as usual. As a "pop-up" gallery, we have been extraordinarily lucky to have been able to use this Creative Space Gallery for 6 months in a row, and our heartfelt thanks go to our patron landlord, Daryl Cutuli, for helping us become established.The November "Gordonvale - Past, Present and Future" themed exhibition was very well attended, and many visitors asked for another historical show next year....it was very popular! We would also like to thank the Mulgrave Settler's Museum for the loan of "A Pilgrim's Progress" set of prints taken from the original illustrations of the book by Paul Bunyan, written in 1678. People were fascinated!We are trying something new again, this time with an exhibition celebrating the "Art in Craft". It was felt earlier in the year that the December "Christmas Market" was the appropriate time for this show, and artists have been asked to consider producing some smaller works as well. Any crafters are welcome to exhibit their best pieces.As this will be our last show until potentially March 2015, an AGM has been called for 4pm Sunday 7th December in order to assess what Gordonvale Creatives have achieved, where we are going next and how we will do this. The towns of Ingham, Cardwell, Innisfail, Babinda, and parts of Cairns were destroyed. The cyclone swept inland over Bellenden-Ker Range and the Atherton Tablelands. Contemporary reports list 37 dead at Innisfail and 40-60 aborigines killed nearby. Innisfail had a population then of 3500 residents and had only 12 houses left intact. At Bingil Bay, a surge wave took the bridge out from the creek and deposited it 400m upstream.In the Mission Beach area, all structures were destroyed and debris reached a height of 7 metres in the trees. The following is a transcript from W.T. Johnston and his experience with this 1918 cyclone while he was a resident of Babinda. At the time of the cyclone, I was 12 years of age and the oldest of 4 children. In 1918 Babinda was relatively a new town and most houses were built by their owners, who processed only bushman skills. The materials used were mainly timber and galvanised iron.At about 10am on Sunday morning March 10th 1918, we noticed that the wind began to blow in gushes and with increasing strength. By late afternoon the roof had been ripped off from the Babinda Creek Hotel, the Catholic Church had been blown down and shortly after the Church of England building had collapsed.I remember my mother taking photographs of the walls and packing fragile items away. We had our meal early and put on warm clothing. My father had gone down to the police station to see if he could be of any help and was blown off his feet, but managed to make his way back home. By nightfall the full fury of the cyclone became apparent.Some time in the night, while we were huddled inside, the back wall of the bearer’s room began to move and opened to about one foot to the top wall plate. Dad decided that we’d be better off at the police sergeant’s residence. We all ran over there and tried to open the doors, but they were jammed and railings and timber began falling down onto the front verandah from the upper floor. That was when I became really afraid. We ran to the side fence and huddled down beside a pile of sand. The force of the wind drove the sand into our hair and clothing, but proved a refuge which protected all from injury. I remember Dad shining a torch into the night sky and all we could see was flying sheets of iron crashing into the fence nearby.By 11pm it was all over and we children were taken to the Sergeant’s residence and packed into his double bed. I shall never forget, every time I wakened during the night, I saw my Aunt Mrs Lindgren, sitting at the bedside with her head in her hands; the family had been hit hard. When the people realized the cyclone had passed, neighbours began cooee-ing to each other to establish their whereabouts. Miraculously there were no fatalities. As the daylight came, it was clear that the devastation was almost total.Many homeless families sought shelter in the Babinda Mill. A relief committee was formed immediately and relief food and clothing poured into Babinda from other northern towns and slowly the residents began the arduous job of rebuilding their town. The Mulgrave Settlers Museum will be closing on Saturday 13th December and will re-open for business on Tuesday 27th January 2015 at 10am. We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas.
