FOREWORD

This document is a companion to the two documents recording National, State, and Region achievements, and covers the Club’s achievements in various Pennant competitions. As with those documents, anyone who has information that they think should be included is encouraged to contact the Administration Manager or the Bowls Website Manager of the Mulgrave Country Club Bowls Section. Emails can be addressed to [email protected], with a subject title of “Pennant History”. Ideally full details should be given, including names and dates, but even partial information would be useful as a starting point for more research.

Criteria applied for inclusion are as follows:

Pennant recognition is limited to Section winners and above, except for Night

Pennant, where there is only one section per division (runners up also to be recognised). Teams will be listed for Division winners and runners-up only.

Photographs are included to provide some historical content, and to allow faces to be put to the names of some achievers.

David West. April 2013.

FINAL PENNANT POSITIONS FOR ALL SIDES

While this document highlights the post season achievements in Pennant, the link below takes you to another document which lists all Sides in all Pennant competitions, showing the Division, Section and end of season ladder position. This document is not complete and any information on earlier years would be welcome.

PENNANT COMPETITIONS

Bowls Victoria was created in December 2009 with the unification of the Victorian Ladies Bowling Association (VLBA) and the Royal Victorian Bowls Association (RVBA). Membership of the VLBA was restricted to women only. Although the RVBA was regarded as a “men’s” body, membership was not in fact restricted to men only.

Prior to 2011, the two bodies ran separate Pennant competitions, the VLBA ran “Tuesday Pennant” for women only, while the RVBA ran “Saturday Pennant”. Although Saturday Pennant was generally regarded as “men’s” pennant, in fact women could join the RVBA and participate.

Following the unification of the two bodies, unified Pennant competitions were introduced in season 2011-2012. Saturday Pennant was now open to all members of Bowls Victoria, regardless of sex. Tuesday Pennant was renamed to “Midweek Pennant”, split into two competitions “Women Only” and “Open”. The former was created to cater for women who wanted to continue playing in a competition which was exclusively for women. However, the numbers participating in this competition gradually declined and it only ran for eight years, being discontinued in season 2019-2020.

In 2019, Bowls Victoria renamed Saturday Pennant as “Weekend Pennant” in recognition of the fact that Clubs could (by mutual agreement between Clubs) move Sectional games from the normal scheduled start time of 1.00pm on a Saturday, to Friday evening, earlier or later on Saturday, or to Sunday.

Mulgrave Country Club participated in a Night Pennant competition run by the Southern District Electric Light Bowls Association (SDELBA) on a Tuesday evening from 1964 through to 2015. The introduction of Open Midweek Pennant saw numbers in the Club participating drop off and no Sides were entered after season 2014-2015. In 2019, the Club decided to participate in the Tuesday Night Pennant run by the Eastern Ranges Bowls Region, entering one Side for season 2019-2020. No Side was entered for the following season however.
