GordonvaleWater TowerThe Gordonvale Water Tower has stood for nearly 100 years at the heart of thecommunity.Thetowerwasconstructedbetween1932and1935.

The Tower was later used as a watchtower during WWII to warn of approachingJapanese bombers and was decommissioned as a water supply in 1953. Councilhas endorsed the removal of the tower with a provision for the development of asuitablecommemorativehistoricdisplay.

Three options have been explored that range from an adaptive use of the lowersection of the tower to a full demolition. These options are displayed at theGordonvaleLibrary, theDisplayBoard inNormanParkand in therelateddocumentson the Council website. Each option includes site interpretive displays which explorethehistoryof thetowerandcommemoratethiskey landmarkandtherole itplayed inthiscommunity.

Council would like your feedback regarding your preferred option for the structuralcomponent of the commemorative display. Take part in the survey online or returnyour completed form to the Gordonvale Library by 9 July, 2013. The GordonvaleCommunityhasbeeninvitedtonominatetheirpreferredoptionfor thenewstructuretocommemoratethewatertower.PleasecompleteasurveyformattheLibrary.

The survey is also available online at www.cairns.qld.gov.au/about-council/community-engagement/current/current-projects/gordonvale-water-tower. Thewater toweratGordonvale’sNormanParkwill be thoroughlydocumentedforhistoricalpurposesbeforeitmakeswayforpublicspace.

Following public consultation regarding the future of Norman Park, Council voted toremove the 78-year-old structure, which is deteriorating and represents a publicsafetyrisk.Division1CouncillorSteveBrainsaidphotographsanddetaileddrawingswould be taken of the structure, with copies to be submitted to various historicalorganisations.“While it is not Heritage Listed, the water tower does have somehistorical value to the town of Gordonvale and we want to make sure a detailedrecordof itsexistenceisretained,”CrBrainsaid.

A survey circulated within the Gordonvale community and other users of the parkaskedwhether respondentswantedthetower retainedandupgraded.“Itwasafairly

even response, with a slighter higherproportion of respondents supportingremoval of the tower, rather thanrestoration,”CrBrainsaid.

“But there is also strong support forimproving the park as public space.Giventhecostlyestimateforrestoration– about $840,000 – and therestrictions that would place on furtherupgrades to the park, removal of thetower is considered to be the mostappropriate option. Under existingregulations, we would not be permittedto add anything to the tower, such as aclock or lookout platform, so anyupgradewouldbepurely tomake itsafeinitspresentform.”

The tower was used to supply water tothe town of Gordonvale from 1935 to1953, when it was decommissioned asa result of Behana Gorge becoming theprimary water supply for the area. Thestructure has been deteriorating formanyyearsduetoconcretecancerandafencecurrentlypreventspublicaccess.

Upon removal of the tower, fragments will be made available to historicalorganisations and members of the public as a souvenir and some components willbe retained for an interpretive historical display at the park. Removal of the watertowerwillcost$150,000,whichwillbesourcedfromthe2013-14budget.

Council is currently investigating further improvements to Norman Park, such asenhanced facilities and playground equipment, with work to commence thisfinancialyear.

Gordonvale State High School student numbers will increase in 2014 with theaddition of year 7. To accommodate student numbers, construction of a twostoreyblockof classroomshascommenced.

The local construction company Byrant Queensland Pty Ltd have been contracted to

build the classroom block, ready for completion by the start of November this year.

Thenewblockwillbepositionedat thebackof theschool,nearest thesportsoval.

The two storey building will consist of four general classrooms and one flexible

learning area on the top floor, and two drama rooms and a music room on the ground

floor. The flexible learning area will be used for Year 7 robotics and science teaching.

The drama rooms will open out onto a landscaped precinct including an amphitheatre

wherestudentscanviewschoolperformances.

In addition, the school has had extensive renovations to B Block in preparation for

their new year 8 students in 2014. Six upstairs classrooms will be refurnished with new

student desks and chairs and all classrooms have been fitted with data projectors and

wirelessaccess.Oneroom,B7,willbecomea lunchtimeactivities roominwhichyear8

studentscanusecomputers,playboardgamesorread.

In the lead up to the opening of the new building precincts for year 7 and year 8

students, the school has planned a variety of educational experiences aligned to the

school’s individual projects for 2014 – robotics, scientific investigations, digital media

andhospitality/cooking.

Current Year 6 and 7 students will be presented opportunities to enhance their

knowledge and skills in each of these four areas throughout the start of term 3.

Students will showcase their knowledge and skills to the school community on 21st

August,duringtheschool’sVIVIDnightof celebration.

The most used transport wasthetrustypushbikeortwostronglegs.Sheppard Street was named after Tom Sheppards. An “S” was added to its endaround1980,whenitwasrealisedthat the“S”wasmissing.SheppardStreetendedat the bullock paddock with a turn around where Clarke Street is today. Thomasbutchers leased the land and it was a holding yard for cattle before they went to theslaughter yards nearby. Cattle were bought by train to Gordonvale siding (whereJohnson Park is today) and a lead cow was used to bring the cattle from SimmonsStreetovertherailway line,downSheppardStreetandthroughalargesliprailgateatthebottomend. MrBillSpurrierrodeonahorseatthebackofthemob.When word went out that cattle were on the way, all the occupants of the houses onthe route that had fences, rushed to close the gates to protect their vegetablegardens. Kids, who thought of spooking the cattle just for the fun of it, were soondeterred by the crack of Mr Spurrier’s stock whip. On the south side of the end ofSheppard Street was a track that ran along close to the bullock paddock to an

Madame Prince had 15 performing monkeys, includingCaesar the only monkey sharpshooter in the world. Wirths Circus was also proud toshowoff its14cagesofwildanimals.

Cairns Relay for Life was held on Saturday the 22nd of June at Barlow Park inCairns and once again Gordonvale was well represented with a number of teamsfromthetownraisingmoneyforsuchanimportantcause.The annual Relay for Life is the Queensland Cancer Funds biggest fundraiser andencouragesteamsof10to15peopletoraisemoneyforresearch.Eachteamcarriesabatonnonstoparoundthetrackfor18hours.With over 200 teamsentered this year Cairnshasreallymadethiseventits own and is renownedfor being the biggest of itskind in Australia.
