At first light Gordonvale gathered at the Cenotaph to watch the sun come up and remember those who has stood in the light and faced the foe to protect their way of life.

The young, and not so young, stood together and prayed with Chaplain Ian Lindsay RAN that we would never have to pay the ultimate sacrifice and that those that had would be forever in our hearts. Later in the day, serving and past serving members marched with the community to the Cenotaph. Mr Dennis Quick as Reviewing Officer, took the salute with RSL Sub Branch President, Mr Frank Miotto.

Dennis served two tours of Vietnam; the first as a mine warfare and explosives engineer with the 1st Field Squadron (he assures me he still has all his fingers) and the second with the most decorated of all military units in Australian History, the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam. In his speech Dennis said, “the VALUES of ANZAC flow through us all. They are a defining element that makes us what we are as Australians.” He went on to speak of his time in Vietnam;

“The values of ANZAC are defined as selfless individual and community responses to a need of critical proportion to support others in need.” He spoke of the selflessness of the injured who, when space was limited on a medivac chopper, all wanted to make sure that their mates went first.

In closing his speech he looked at how today we can display those values, “The values of ANZAC manifest in many ways and not only in the grand gesture; they can manifest in a kind word to another who is suffering; a kindly intervention when another is under duress; a guiding hand when another strays and, most importantly, tolerance of others who may be different in one way or another. These are all aspects of what are the values of ANZAC.”

“These values of ANZAC are an attribute that we all need to take and utilise positively each and every day of our lives, for with it we are a strong, vibrant and committed community. Without it, we are essentially empty. The values of ANZAC are the Legacy that has been passed from generation to generation over the past century.”

Giri Dojo Karate was a familiar martial arts school in the Gordonvale area for many years until about 5 years ago when it was closed due to work commitments by the Instructor.

The school has now opened up again and is operating from the Edmonton PCYC in Walker Road Edmonton. Chief instructor is Dave Raymond who has over 30 years experience in the martial arts. Backed up by a dedicated team of instructors, the club already boasts 20 students of all ages. Giri dojo karate prides itself on its family friendly training environment targeting families to train together. The classes are subsidized by the Police Youth Club and as such are able to keep the price of the classes down. Students from as young as 5 years of age are encouraged to join in. Giri Dojo karate is a mixture of traditional martial arts as well as modern styles. Discipline plays a major part in martial arts and Giri Dojo is no different. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 5pm until 6pm. For fun, fitness and self defence, give the Edmonton PCYC a ring on 4045 6540.

On Thursday 24th of April, Djarragun College held an ANZAC Commemorative Service. This year the College’s Commemorative Service included the opening of a memorial garden and a commemorative plaque unveiled by Councilor Steve Brain and Principal Robyn Hughes. Librarian, Ms Jenny Vanderzee, acquired the plaque through the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee (ADCC). The ADCC of Queensland has developed a program to establish a memorial in every school within Queensland. The Committee supplied the plaque and the School set up the rock and the garden. After the unveiling, Robyn Hughes, the school Principal welcomed our guest and spoke about what ANZAC Day meant to her. She spoke

about the theme of this years ANZAC commemorations -honouring, remembering, thanking and renewing. Councilor Brain was a Commanding Officer of 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment, which has a high proportion of Indigenous Australians amongst its personnel. He related his experiences to the students and talked about ANZAC values and how they apply to the students of today. After his speech the School Captains, Caroline Sebasio and Paul Bounghi, Ms Hughes and the Councilor laid a wreath in memory of those who had served. After the playing of the Last Post and a minutes silence Marama Wapau read the ODE, which is depicted on the plaque, and the students sang the National Anthem.

Seventeen year old Cairns singer / songwriter Ray-Lee has been singing since she could talk, was playing piano at seven, and taught herself to play guitar at thirteen. Her debut EP ‘Life Is Different’ was released in December 2011.

Ray-Lee has been performing in Cairns venues for the past few years gathering a collection of talent and songwriter awards; and has been spreading her wings across Australia and overseas including performing in Hollywood USA.

Highlights from Ray-Lee’s musical career so far include: performing live to air on Hot FM, Zinc 102.7, ABC Radio & Community Radio 89.1FM Cairns; being a finalist in Cairns has Got Talent 2011 & 2012 and also a finalist in the 2010 Cairns Festival Street Buskers competition; winning the 2011 Amateurs Cairns heat of Port Douglas Carnival songwriters comp; performing in the Cairns Folk n Roots evening and performing with artists such as Emma Louise, Adam Hynes & Kathryn Hartnett and support act for Stan Walker and Frank Turner. Ray-Lee was honoured to be part of the 2012 Australian Team who competed in the World Championships of Performing Arts in July 2012.

Ray-Lee was awarded 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals in various Self Accompanied Vocal sections. She was awarded No.10 in the Top Ten List for the Youth Category of the 2011 Australian Songwriting Contest with her original song, Starting Line, was a finalist again in 2012 with her original Heartbroken and again in 2013 with her original Backed up against a wall. She has performed at the Yungaburra Folk Festival, Cairns Festival, Black Mountain Unplugged and HeyDay Festival. Ray-Lee regularly performs around Far North Queensland and has also contributed a track to the Cairns Festival 2011 compilation CD. Ray-Lee’s debut EP ‘Life Is Different’ is out now.

Gordonvale has been on the increase and recently named as one of Australia’s “hottest suburbs” for 2013 after 107 houses were sold in this suburb last year.

According to the Cairns Post on 12.4.14, it is one of only three Queensland suburbs named on the Australian Property Investor list of 89 top performing suburbs. The data showed Gordonvale had a capital growth of 15.5%, similar to growth in some suburbsof Sydney.

Creative PartnershipsSaturday the 5th of April 2014 saw the inaugural meeting of the creative arts community of Gordonvale come together to discuss the future of the creative arts in Gordonvale and how this area of untapped talent can move forward and in the process advancing the town.

One area discussed was the potential for arts tourism, something that doesn’t really exist in the area. Gordonvale is such a unique place, and being separated from Cairns lends itself to such an idea.

The general consensus from the meeting was that Gordonvale needed a shop front in the town to showcase products being crafted by the community.

Members representing the Cairns Regional Council, local business people and more importantly the artists themselves attended to meeting. The arts community of Gordonvale is now on the lookout for a shop front in the area to display the material.

The next meeting was held on the 26th of April to further discuss the ideas, potential locations and opportunities and then hopefully move forward.

Earth Hour Cane Toad CollectionIn the darkness of Earth Hour on the 29th of March, families from all over Gordonvale and beyond were out in search of cane toads – a great family event!

Mulgrave Landcare and Gordonvale State School representatives gathered early the next morning in Norman Park eagerly awaiting the outcome... a flood or a famine we wondered!

Compared to the inaugural collection in Gordonvale last year, the number of families and cane toads that arrived kept us all busy counting and weighing the number and largest toads collected...

Prizes overall of $20 vouchers donated by Mulgrave Landcare and T.Shirts from Conservation Volunteers Australia go to: Largest number of Cane Toads – Alex Govan, Gordonvale State School, 76 toads. Biggest Cane Toad – Lachlan Norcott, St. Michaels School, Gordonvale, 236 grams. Impressive Teacher Collection – Cindy Lazzaroni, 125 Cane Toads, Biggest 333 grams. Ray Guest, ‘Excelsior’ student from Gordonvale State School helped promote this event.

Gordonvale is where the cane toad was first introduced in 1935. Toads are known to effect the biodiversity of an area and by taking part in Toads Day Out, many toads are removed from the environment. Toads Day Out also increases the public awareness of the problems of introducing any non-native animal into an area. Conducting this event on Earth Hour night gives the community another activity to participate in while non-essential power is turned off.

By identifying ‘hotspots’ in the Gordonvale area, toad populations in this area can be reduced. We are encouraging families, schools and Gordonvale businesses to join us next year!

Gordonvale Red CrossGordonvale Red CrossThe Gordonvale Branch of the Australian Red Cross held a very successful Cent Sale on Saturday afternoon 22nd March at the R.S.L. Hall Gordonvale even though the weather was inclement.

These funds are our biggest fund raiser for Red Cross Calling March Appeal. We sincerely thank all Sponsors, Local Businesses and all who donated gifts or money, all who helped and attended the afternoon. Winner of the Wheelbarrow of Goodies - Andrea Clarke. Also “Thank You” to businesses who hold our Red Cross containers. We certainly appreciate the extra funds raised. These funds are used to provide vital community services, such as Aged Care and Youth services, as well as other programs for vulnerable people living within our communities.

The Gordonvale Red Cross is active in the town helping at the Pyramid Residential Care Centre each week and knitting Trauma Teddies and Beanies for distribution to Medical Centres and various welfare agencies. Anyone interested in attending our monthly meetings are help on the first Thursday of the Month at 1.30pm at the RSL Hall, Gordonvale.

The story of Edmund Alexander Delisser‘A man who came to dig for gold on the Mulgrave River Goldfield and stayed forever.’(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)

Edmund was born in London in 1829. He was one of 9 children. He attended Cheltenham College and after his schooling, Edmund joined the army.

Edmund travelled to South Australia in 1852 to join his brother who was well established there. He became captain and adjutant of the first volunteer Force in South Australia.

In 1864 he qualified as a surveyor in Victoria and in 1865 he was employed by pastoral company De Graves and Co to sink wells in the area of the Great Australian Bight. He headed a team exploring and surveying the country from Fowlers Bay to the W.A. border.

His Journal “Journey into the Interior of Australia” is held in the national library. He named the Nullarbor Plain which comes from the Latin name nullus arbour (no trees). He also along with his brother mapped and surveyed large parts of Adelaide.

During 1871 and 1872 Edmund held a miners licence on the goldfields at Gympie. During the years 1878 and 1880’s Edmund conducted surveys of the rail line between Townsville and Charters Towers. He also completed engineering works on the Gladstone to Bundaberg lines, before retiring and moving north to Cairns.

Edmund and a friend Walter Hodgson opened up the Walter Hodgson Mine in the Mulgrave Valley sometime between 1885 and 1888. The mine was situated on Butchers Creek above where the creek runs into the Mulgrave River.

The British banks that were backing this mine operation crashed in England and withdrew their funds and money became scarce. It was estimated that already 20,000 pounds had been spent on the mine with the purchase of a crushing plant and the building of a track to service the mine. By 1897 Edmund was merely living as a mine manager and the mine had stopped working.

On the morning of 30th June 1900, while he was on his way to take a bath in the creek, Edmund suffered a heart attack and died. In his diary there was not a mention that he had been unwell, yet a few days before he had chosen his burial site, his friends complied with his request.

Edmund travelled from a wealthy household in London, waited on by servants, to the dry plains in South Australia, where he sat by the campfire and ate bully beef and then to the rainforest of North Qld.

Perhaps we could say that it doesn’t seem fitting that a man who gave so much to the exploration and development of South Australia and Qld should lie in an unmarked grave, but maybe that’s how Edmund Alexander Delisser wanted it to be.
