Happy 2012 to everybody. I hope you are finding it to be a great start to a fantastic new year. As is tradition here, many of us make resolutions or set goals every new year. Many times, unfortunately, I believe they just end up being wishes. Lets all set a goal this year to make our resolutions become realities. We get a new opportunity or a new start to try something new or improve upon our performance; I say this year lets get it done.

So I sit here writing this column, and its on one of the coldest days so far this winter. We should consider ourselves lucky so far; Im just hoping that we dont pay for it later. I was getting everything lined up to attend Motorama last week, and I can hardly believe its almost here. Trust me, Im not complaining because I am one of the biggest fans of summer that youll find anywhere. Im just glad its soon race time again.

New resolutions for MRA, you ask? Well, Im glad you did. Our goal this year is to bring you more human interest stories and more racer information. I know everybody loves the race coverage, and that will continue, but so many times we find ourselves just reading about racing that happened close to a month ago. Lets face it, in many cases you were there and already know what happened or youre reading the results off somebodys website on your smart phones on the way home.

How about we feature more racers personal

accomplishments or help you promote your sponsors more. Maybe we tell you about the next big event rather than last months event. Yeah, well still get as many of you as we can in our pages; you just might see a little different format.

Websites, yeah lets talk about that. We already know that many of you are spending time on our website. How about we give you more to look at while youre there? How about we make it easier for you to get there and enjoy the content thats on there. If you notice below, youll see a few QR codes or small black boxes with little squigglies in them (thats for the people like me who arent so web savvy yet). Take your phone and download the FREE QR Code reader thats on there, then just open the app and take a picture of the box. That will take you directly to different pages on our site; now how

After a year of fun, it is once again time to honor those who have excelled within the District 7 community. Many people have dedicated lots of time and effort into putting together the program that we have. The first group that we must send thanks to consists of the many officers, board members, and promoters that run our events. Next we need to thank the mothers, fathers, and riders that have

attended these events. Lastly, we must send thanks to the sponsors who have helped fund our events.

This years banquet was held at the Turf Valley Resort in Baltimore. The night started off at 6 p.m. with music and drinks. The main course was wonderful, with crab cakes and London broil, followed by some sweet desserts.

The first award is given to an individual

who has set the bar for other members of the motorcycle world. This person has made a significant contribution to the sport and therefore gets placed into the Hall of Fame. This years award goes to a young man from New Jersey who has taken the dirt tracking world by storm in the past couple of years. Jersey Jake Johnson, one of the most modest guys you will ever meet, conquered the 2011 AMA Grand National Twins Championship. The 2002 Rookie of the Year has proven that he is a dominating force, making this his third championship winning title. He was also the recipient of the 2011 Rodney Farris Award in honor of national #92.

The second award of the night is known as the Sportsman of the Year Award. This annual award is a special honor given to an individual who is elected and chosen through a secret ballot by members of the District 7 Board. This years award was given to Jack Lafferty Sr. for his years of dedication to the district. He is a man always there for the sport, never asking for recognition.

This years recipient of the BCTRA Scholarship Grant went to Megan Bell. This grant was designed to help benefit an up and coming student who has shown support of the motorcycle world. We will be taking applications for the 2012 season starting in March from students looking for a little extra cash to go towards their schooling. Go to the BCTRA website for more details on what must be done to apply. It is a simple application asking what the motorcycle

world has done for you and how you are involved. Anyone is eligible.

The district would like to send a special thanks to the one and only Wayne Sody. After years of hard work, our current District President is stepping down and handing his thrown over to Alan DeCarlo. Sody has left some very large shoes to fill.

They say that the memory of a legend never dies, and that will definitely be the case when it comes to the legendary #9. Gary Nixon, a Maryland resident, was deeply loved by the motorcycling community. On Aug. 5, his life came to an end due to heart troubles, but his reputation will live on forever. With a colorful 22 years of professional racing, two Grand National Championships, amazing abilities, and a bubbly personality all his own, he was the true epitome of motorcycle racers. He will be missed, but heaven is definitely a faster place with him there.

In the summer of 1977, Armin Hostetter and his three sons were finishing up their fifth racing season at Trail-Way Speedway in Hanover, PA. Being a farmer all his life and a motorcycle racer in his youth, he had an idea. During the yearly visits to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, he knew the large arena had a dirt floor. That coupled with the fact that no one was racing outdoors over the winter, the solution was obvious, indoor racing. With a few phone calls he put together the first Motorama event on February 15th-16th, 1978. They called it the Harrisburg Indoor Motorcycle Championships.

Over the last 30+ years, there were many growing pains, but the main focus has always been the racing. Buildings were added to the complex, expanding to almost 30 acres under one roof. The Motorama Races and Shows have expanded to include all of the buildings. The newest is the new expo hall, home to the very popular show called Tunerwar.

All of the racing and all shows are included in your single admission price, but there are no reserved seats in any of the five racing arenas. There are over 2,000 racers along with over 700 race and show vehicles on display. As you walk through the shows and pit areas, feel free to stop and talk to them. Dont forget to support the more than 100 various sponsors and vendors who continue to support Motorama year after year.Motorama is the ultimate motorsports extravaganza and custom car show in the nation.

It all goes down February 18th and 19th, 2012, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the Farm Show Complex. There are many things to see and do here, but ultimately Motorama is all about the racing. With all 7,000 arena seats occupied all weekend long, the Arenacross racing is what makes Motorama Events a national phenomenon

Thats right; our indoor arenacross competitions attract racers from all over the nation. Riders from the ages of 4 to over 40 all come out to compete for top honors in their respective class. Professionals such as Travis Pastrana, John Natalie and many others have graced the arenacross tracks right here at Motorama in addition to the local amateur stars of tomorrow.

Be sure to wear warm clothing and a comfortable pair of shoes, as there is a lot to see and do. A good set of earplugs is always advisable, as it gets fairly loud during the arenacross races, and be sure to come early for a good seat. Round four of the AMA Arenacross 2011-12 season made its stop inside Wilkes Barres Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza Dec. 9-11, 2011, with top riders like Babbitts Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki rider Tyler Bowers of Danville, Ky., and Arenacross Lites Class Michael Willard of Newark, Ohio, putting on a spectacular show for the fans Saturday night. Although the crowd was considerably light, the fans that came out to watch got a very good show.

The weather outside was very cold and in the mid 30s. It was too cold to be racing outdoors, but the action inside the arena was hot just like a mid-August summers day. With all the rain we had in

Pennsylvania, the track was extremely soft. Usually this would have no effect on Arenacross, except the dirt wasnt covered this year. This led to some of the major ruts in the track, which caused havoc to many of the riders. Track maintenance had to be done after every race. This led to some difficult lines for passing on the track.

This year riders came from as far as Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey and North Carolina to try their hand at the Arenacross race in Wilkes Barre.

The racing action was fast and action packed on Saturday night. Every year, local riders from all over Pennsylvania are given the chance to show their talent against some of the top riders of the

country. With the races being short and very fast, the riders dont have much time to make mistakes, and if they did it would cost them a bit of time. Local rider Dylan Slusser gave it his all during the Arenacross main event, placing 13th overall for the evening, while Michael McDade came in a close second during the Lites main event Saturday evening.

Racing Into The Future that was the tagline on the front of the 2011 MAMA banquet program. I have to think that they know what they are talking about. After all, this was their 36th Annual banquet, and that speaks huge volumes. Any organization that can thrive for that long in todays economy has to be doing many things right.

This was my second year to attend their event, and like the one previous there were many smiling faces, huge trophies and good eats. The program ran smoothly, and there were awards for class champions and about 50 other categories. Sportsman of the year, best attitude, best service, top riders in disciplines, and the list goes on and on. You can tell that the leadership of this group truly wants to give back to their riders.

Id like to share with you an excerpt from a letter that was inserted into their program from a family that was written in 1987 I think it holds true even more so today.

We Truly believe that it is rare in these fast-paced times of ours to find a haven where an entire family can enjoy the fellowship and good times with such an incredible group of people. Where else could you spend a weekend with someone who wants to beat your son, and you loan him the necessary parts to do it with?

Where else could you go for a weekend, leave all your worldly possessions outside and unlocked, and know that it will be there in the morning safe and sound even with all those teenagers roaming around all night? How about the fact that it makes no difference how much money you have or what your profession is? Its your child that is the star of the day not you or your wealth. Its a good feeling, isnt it?

It goes on from there, but this was a thank-you letter written to this organization about a 15-year experience that a family had participating in our great sport. Participating with MAMA to race motocross, I could go on but really dont know what else I could say. Our first ever MRA Hero is young Mr. Noah Geyer. I dont get to a lot of MAMA events, so I first noticed Noah at the 2011 MAMA awards banquet. I kept hearing this fast 50cc racers name over and over again as he accepted one award after the other. For 2011, Noah was the recipient of not only two 50cc class awards, but also The Larry Beck award that goes to the top A rider of the year. He then was one of five riders who received the Steve McQueen award that goes to expert class racers, plus he got an award for racing in the 50 B Stock division.

In talking with Noahs parents, his mom Colleen told me that Noah has always been around dirt bikes due to his father (John) racing. When he was three months old, he attended his first dirt bike race and then rode his first PW 50 (with training wheels) at 18 months old outfitted with his Elmo helmet! In March of 2010, he raced his first MAMA race and placed 6th overall.

Colleen also mentioned that the thrill of the fast bike and winning is what drives Noah. Ever since he was a toddler we could tell he understood the fundamentals of racing a motorized bike, and we have always had complete trust in his abilities. He is truly blessed by God with a racing talent. We have watched him grow and persevere into a fine young rider and look forward to seeing what lies ahead for him and trusting God for direction.

The family time that dirt bike racing offers our family is priceless. We enjoy traveling to different locations and spending quality time together and, of course, the big race day!

Thanks go out to the Geyers, and best wishes for the future. Noah has another year in the 4-6 age classes, so I look for great achievements for this fast mini racer. Noah and his family certainly are true Heroes of the sport. Keep an eye on young Noahs progress this year, and also keep your eyes open because who knows, you just might be our next MRA Hero.

The Delaware Enduro Riders hosted their second harescramble of the year in late November at the Blue Diamond MX Park in New Castle, DE. This years format was changed, running the youth classes on Saturday, with the C and Main event classes running on Sunday. This format has become popular, allowing for a more relaxed race day, easing sign-up and the workloads on the clubs.

This years race also saw some changes to the course direction and design, but, as usual, the crowds were big on both days. The weather cooperated once again and was near perfect for the last ECEA Harescramble of the year.

At Blue Diamond, racers get a mix of the sandy motocross course along with a bit of woods riding combined with some high speed open air running. Just over 600 racers came out on the weekend to put a cap on this years season. Henderson Hauls Wins at Timonium Indoor Short Track

Starting off with a win over current GNC champion Jake Johnson in the Adult 100, Nick Henderson was the big winner at the first of two indoor short track races inside the Cow Palace Building on the grounds of the Maryland State Fairgrounds. He scored three wins in the four classes he entered at the 36th Annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track. The long-running Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club-sponsored event is in danger of closing down due to lower rider counts and much higher building rental over the past few years. It is hard to say whether this event will run next year, although, with over 150 entrants from 100 riders it was a good sign

Henderson then hit a stretch of three finals in a row, of which he took the first two, and finished second to an always quick Chris Klinefelter. Henderson repeated his semi win in the Adult 100 (Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. You know what I mean*) over Johnson with another holeshot, leaving Jason Cole, Cory Strickler, and Dan Bromley to fight for leftovers. They ran the entire twelve lap final with only a length between them, as Henderson kept the National Champ just far enough back to keep any ideas of a bump-n-run occurring as they almost lapped the others.

After a few more finals were run, Henderson returned on the same machine for the 125 two stroke/150 four stroke final, leading Colton Smith, John Henderson, his dad, and Matt Langrehr out of the second turn. The front two quickly put some distance on the others as Smith kept the pressure on Henderson right up to the end, finishing less than a length down.

The start of the 250 race was slightly held up as three riders just finished the 125 final, and they had to get the 250 warmed up. Again Henderson led out of two, with Mike Poe, Dan Bromley, Langrehr and Roy Miller as the supporting cast. Miller moved into fourth on the third lap and was pressuring Bromley, while they were losing sight of the front two. On the tenth lap, that became one as Poe fell in the second turn.

The next final, 450, was also delayed for three riders jumping onto another machine, with Henderson and Smith doing all three. This time it was probably a combination of a very quick rider and a possibly tiring one that ended the streak. Chris Klinefelter was first

out of two and checked out, wining by over a straight. Henderson led a close pack of Steve Lerch, Smith, Miller and Corey Hormes. Lerch met the concrete off four on the third lap, with Miller getting by Smith off the last turn for third.

In addition to Henderson, three other riders scored multiple wins: Jason Isennock easily won the Open Sportsman and held off Jake Shoemaker in the Pro final. Samantha Bergman took the Womens and 250/Open B, and Cameron Smith took the 85 and Youth 100.

Isennock took the lead from Jake Shoemaker, Travis Diem and Cory Strickler at the start of the Sportsman final and pulled away. Strickler got by Diem for third off four on the third lap, but Diem returned the favor a few laps later. On his victory lap, Isennock gave a ride to his mother, Julie.

The Pro final had Isennock grabbing the lead from Shoemaker and the Tiny Track Terror Donnie Mullen. Mullen didnt get his usual quick start and actually let an opening for Shoemaker to sneak through. This time the front three stayed fairly close, although not as close to attempt to nudge the one in front.

Bergman jumped to the front of the Womens final, with Nicole Henderson (yet another one!), Samantha Resch and Megan Bell behind. Bergman increased the margin and needed it as she collided with a lapped rider entering one on the sixth lap, going wide, but recovered just in front of Henderson and held onto for the win.

Since they dont normally separate A & B riders, the Open B was set up a few years ago to give less experienced riders a chance to make a final on skill instead of luck against riders of similar skill. Bergman took the lead from Jerry Alexander, Allan Pleasanton and Anthony Crabbe. Crabbe took third by halfway for the only position change in the final. On her victory lap, she gave a ride to her dad, Mark Tsirigos.

In the 85, Smith led a procession of Colin Cunningham, Brandon Price and Chase Smith throughout the final. For the Youth 100, Ryan Dragunas took the lead from Cameron and Chase. Dragunas chances went down the tubes when he went down in four on the third lap. With that, Smith had an easy time of it.

Price figured in one of the better 65 finals run here. Chris Thomas led Price as they quickly pulled away from Jacob Gast,

Melanie Siegel and the rest of the field. Price stayed right on his rear tire the entire distance. Starting the final lap, Price sliced under Thomas into one for the lead, but went high in two, letting Thomas back into the lead. Off four, Price tried again, but came up inches short at the line.

After visiting family in the summer and competing at the outdoor race, a top local rider from the 1970s and 80s, Rick Spence, revisited for the indoors and led the 40+ final over Chris Crash Hathaway, Tom Majeski and Mark Burkholder. Majeski started moving, taking second into one on the second lap, and slicing under Spence for the lead into one on the fifth lap. Once in front, he checked out to a half-lap margin. After a slow start, Rich Mellinger began slicing through the field, taking second off four on the final lap.

Burkholder returned in the Vintage final and followed Rob Smith out of one, with Hathaway and Matt Langrehr behind. Burkholder took the lead at the end of the first lap, but Smith retook it for good a few laps later in the battle of Bultacos.

Cooler temperatures made for some hot racing as the Delaware Dirt Track Association played host to the Delaware State Championship on the tight bull ring track.

In 55cc action, Logan McGrane topped Jonathan Price, and Rick Johnson came out of retirement to take the Adult 150 class over the Hildebrands, Melissa and Bob. The 250 Sportsman saw Roy Miller lead wire to wire over Tyler Phillips and Daulton Gauthier, who was making his first appearance at the track.

Some of the closest battles of the season were in the Open B division, and this race was no different. Jeremey Johnson in just his first year of racing sat on the pole after winning his heat race. When the green light flashed for the final, the field charged into turn one, with Johnson bringing out the red flag after going down exiting turn two.

On the restart, Harold Sheffer grabbed the lead over Shain Bourassa and Don Dougherty. Johnson would make a charge from the penalty line that would have him come up inches short at the finish to take second behind Sheffer.

Roy Miller returned to sit on the pole for the Sportsman final with $200 to win on the line. Miller got the holeshot as Tom Majeski and Tom McGrane went into turn three side by side, with McGrane coming out on top. Miller led all 15 laps as McGrane kept him honest, while Majeski felt pressure from Gauthier near the end but held on for third.

MRA Hero - Kyle MillerLocal Racer Proposes on Starting Line I wanted to feature a longtime family friend as

our first ever Harescramble Hero. Kyle and my son were friends since elementary school, and I remember the first time that I saw Kyle ride. My family and I were headed to Rausch Creek to practice back in the day, and my son Trevor was excited because his friend from school was going to be there too, and they wanted to ride together. Turns out that Kyle was just learning to ride back then, and it happened to be more of a training mission for Kyle and his family that day than a lets go to Rausch and hit some jumps kind of a day.

Needless to say, Kyle was just a beginner, and I didnt know if he was planning on getting into racing or not. A short time later he was ready to hit the track, and, although a steady and consistent kind of a guy, I never really got the feeling that Kyle would stick with it. Well, its funny how things work. My son raced a few years, then moved on with his life, but our buddy Kyle stuck with it, and no matter what the outcome, he was right back there the next weekend lined up and ready to go.

Fast forward a few years, and Kyle has had his best year ever. He finished fourth overall in the 4 Stroke C division racing the ECEA Harescramble Series and earned enough points to bump to the B division for 2012. He has a new program in mind for the coming year and cant wait to hit the track.

On top of that, at the Ridge Riders event this fall, Kyle proposed to his girlfriend Helena while waiting for the green flag. Helena has a little trick of putting a rock behind Kyles rear tire on the starting line so she doesnt have to struggle holding his bike for him while he hits the riders meeting. This time Kyle surprised Helena with a little rock of his own, and, of course, she accepted with a smile on her face. The two plan a late 2013 wedding.

While Im sure theyll pursue that B class title between now and then, I felt there was no better candidate than Kyle Miller for our first HS Hero. Its stories like these that will keep you headed back to the track for years to come.

It was early in the 1990s when I met Josh and Randy Demuth at a local night race at Trail Ways Speedway in Hanover, Pa. It just so happens Josh crashed on his KX65 right near where I was standing. I helped get him over to the EMT,s that night and as soon as the kid was good to ride again, we were hitting the track together.

Josh was from the Buckeye State just to our west, and at about age 7 his family moved here to South Central Pa., home of

District 6 Motocross. Josh tore through the ranks quickly, from 65s to 85s and 125s, in what almost seemed like overnight.

At about 18 he made the move to Texas, where he set a solid set of footprints in the AMA history books. Josh rode the nationals and supercrosses for several years, earning numbers like 88, 48, 32 and 35 for a variety of teams, the likes of Team Green to East Side Suzuki and more.

Josh then made the best move of his

career. He went Arenacross racing! The money was good, and the competition was tough, but Josh was up for the task. He would eventually dethrone and dominate 5X champion Buddy Antunez. Josh would go on to a record-setting year with more wins than anyone ever before him in a single season. He would add three AMA Arenacross titles and one BooKoo AX title to his resume as the 4-time champion entered 2012 with Team Babbit Kawasaki again, for which he won two titles at the veteran age of 32.

I saw Josh at the Wilkes Barre, Pa., round just several weeks ago, and he told me that he was ready to stop racing. While disappointed to see him go, we all have our day. Josh intended to finish the year and then

call it quits, but the ending came even sooner than he planned. When youre not having fun anymore, it is best to walk away, and that was exactly where he was. While only 10 points out of the points lead, he pulled the plug on a great career.

I asked Josh in looking back, was any title better than the rest? And, like most multiple champs say, the first one was the best, he said. Josh says hed do nothing different if he had another shot. He is very happy with his success and all the great friends and times he has had. I asked him if the Vet classes in Tennessee appeal to him, and he said he sure would like to think about it after some time off with his family.

Josh would like to thank his mom and dad for the support while growing up and all the people who helped him achieve his goals throughout his career. I wouldnt count out the former PA rider from showing up at a Happy Ramblers or Doublin Gap race this summer. Keep an eye out for the #35. Though officially retired from Pro AMA racing, he said he still loves to just ride. My hats off to you Josh for such a great long career.

The Hangover Hare Scramble was a huge success, and the Maryland Competition Riders would like to thank all of its members who dedicated untold hours to make this event happen. Dozens of MCR members worked hard on track preparation and layout, administrative work, set-up and sign-up, scoring, and parking. The weather was the best it could possibly be for a January event in Maryland, and the riders came out in numbers, including eight-time National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty. Mike took the overall with style and grace as the crowd stared in amazement at his speed and fluidity on the bike. Thanks for riding with MCR Mike.

Also of note in the field was Nancy Sabater, who won the Womens class but is also well known off the track for fighting against ridiculous Washington policies that affect the youth in our sport.

MCR would also like to thank Mike Long, landowner at Wicomico Motorsports Park, and Danny from WMP, who was always available on or off the tractor to help make everything run

smoothly. Dont forget that Wicomico is open almost any weekend of the year on a pay-to-ride basis. Check out WicomicoMotorsportsPark.com for details.

The C class was huge, with 57 riders in the field. Many of these riders were first-timers and got a good taste of the sport. We hope to see you guys again, and we hope youre not too sore from the ride.

There is already talk of a few events each year at Wicomico, including some alternative formats and charity trail rides. In addition, we are already working on improvements to future events, including

larger, easier to read bar codes to make scoring easier and more accurate youth classes with

a two-day format and improvements to sign-up and pre-registration.
