First let me introduce myself, my name is Bob Schuler, owner of TOTAL TWO WHEEL TRAINING. I am a personal trainer for moto-cross and bicycle racers. I am currently working with Ty Wallace, one of the fast guys around district six, and also Andy Fleck who is no squid either. I also work with Sarah Uhl, a female cyclist in our area. She has won fourteen National Championships and a Junior World Championship under my coaching programs. I have been riding and racing on two wheels or four all of my life. I won’t tell you how old I am but I was around when we had real moto-cross tracks like Moto Mecca and Seipstown. In case you are not that old, they were right here in Pennsylvania. Seipstown held a National that Jimmy Weinert won. I was just a kid at the time, but that is what really got me hooked on MX. We all know it is the greatest sport in the world. Ok, let me get to the real reason for this whole article. I returned to the motocross-rac-ing scene about three years ago. I was amazed how much the bikes had improved and friendly people at the races had stayed the same. I was forced to stop racing years ago due to serious injuries and took up bicycle racing to rehabilitate those injuries. After twelve years I got tired of racing my bicycle and returned to MX. I am lov-ing everything about it. After being around cyclist that rely on their bodies for power, I have a hard time understanding why the guys I see at the races don’t train harder. Why they don’t work on get-ting themselves in top shape before they go out and try to race. I see some guys out there that look like they are going to die after the moto is over. Believe me, the motos have gotten a lot shorter than they were back in the good old days. Not that I am pointing the finger at any of the track promoters, we just did not have all the classes that we have today. I see so many guys go out and spend a ton of money on all kinds of after market stuff like pipes, wheels, graphics and all the other good-ies. And yet they are not willing to go out and spend a couple bucks a month to join a gym. They are not willing to put in the hard work dur-ing the off-season and also during the season. Let’s face it; the bikes have become so good that they really do not need to make them any better. Unless you are a top pro that can really hold it open and use all the bike that comes stock. If you really want to go faster you need to work on your strength, flexibility and balance. There are many ways to do this and if you do not want to become a gym rat that’s ok too. You can swim, run, bike, play basketball, or racquet ball. Rowing is one of the best ways to work all four of the muscle groups that you need when you ride. We all know the best training for racing is to ride your motorcycle. So, unless your parents are loaded and you can skip school, head south for the winter and ride every-

day, you are in the same boat as all of us. Find a winter activity to keep in shape. Another thing that is not new news, you can’t race if you don’t have a job. Well, unless you are lucky enough to find a rich girl that really understands and does not mind blowing her money on you having fun. So let’s face it. We are stuck here in the snow. So get off your butt, stop eating those potato chips while you are watching supercross and start training! As I listed above, there are plenty of differ-ent training methods to stay fit over the winter. Yoga is another thing you may want to try. It helps you relax and is great for your flexibility. I am a firm believer in weight training. Building stronger muscles will help you handle your bike in many situations. It even helps when you hit the ground and we all do that every now and then. Start training now and you will be in for a big surprise when the season comes around. You will notice you can concentrate on going fast instead of trying to get fit. Look at Ricky Carmichael. He is winning everything in sight. He himself will tell you that the biggest change was hiring a personal trainer to help him with his fitness. Good fitness promotes confidence. The reason he is winning is because he is as strong on the last lap as he was during the first lap. He puts in the hard work all year long. This way he can enjoy the fun of racing. Let’s face it winning races is what all racers love to do.

If you have any questions about training I’ll be glad to put together a program for you. Drop me an email at [email protected].

“Remember the bike is ready to go, now is the time for you to get ready.” See you at the races

8 How To Be a Good Peewee Parent As my wife and I look back on our 5-year-old son’s first year of 50cc motocross racing, we are excited at the

progress he has made and the fun our entire family has had in this wonderful sport. We have seen improvements

in our son’s schoolwork, his attitude, and also in his ability to ride a motorcycle. Although we have made some of

the common mistakes parents make in all sports, we are confident that we are on the track to fun and success for

our family in motocross. For those who are new to the sport or are considering starting, I would like to share what

my wife and I feel are ten of the most important things we have learned from more experienced parents over the

last year:

1. Do not yell at your child to go faster when he is racing- This is very distracting to a peewee racer. I wish I had

a dollar for every time I have seen a young racer crash while looking at a parent who was screaming. A five year

old needs to watch where he is going. In most cases a child is not going to go fast because his parents want him

to go fast, he will go fast when his competitiveness is stronger than his fear. Only the child can make this deci-

sion.

2. Always keep safety as a high priority- We have purchased every piece of safety gear made and our son, Matthew,

wears all of it every time he rides. He wears boots, pants, a long sleeve jersey, a helmet, goggles, a neck brace, knee

pads, a chest protector, and elbow pads every time he practices or races. Knee braces will be the next piece of

protective equipment that we will make him wear. Don’t let your child use the excuse that all of this gear is not comfortable. After a couple of rides in a new piece of gear they will not even notice it is on.

3. Give three pieces of praise before any criticism and end each critique with a compliment- When our son comes off the track I always ask him how he felt that his moto went. He is usually pretty in tune with the things

he did well and the opportunities he has to improve. I then tell him at least three things that he did perfectly before giving him any constructive criticism. These compliments usually involve things like getting the holeshot,

taking a great line or making a great pass but can also be less significant things like not falling down, finishing the race, or keeping his goggles on. It really doesn’t matter how far you have to reach for the compliment,

just make sure there are three good things before any constructive criticism.

4. Be supportive of your child and all of the other kids at the track- In our area most of the parents are very supportive of all of the kids racing. Some of Matthew’s biggest rival’s parents are on the track cheering for

him as well as their own children. When Matthew won the first moto of his career, Linda Evers was the first person to congratulate him. She ran up to him and gave him a huge hug and cheered wildly. This was an awe-

some display of support because Matthew had passed her son a couple of turns from the finish for the moto win. In a recent race Matthew and a good friend of his, John McGinty III, were battling side by side all night

long in both of their classes. In one moto John fell in a corner and Matthew was stuck in a rut behind him. John’s father was the first to get to the crash and he made sure Matthew was able to get by before picking up

John’s bike, starting it, and sending him on his way. It was a great display of sportsmanship!

5. If you are not an experienced motocross racer it makes sense to get professional instruction for your child- If your child wants to play competitive tennis or golf you would send them to a tennis or golf professional. It

is very important that kids learn to use correct form early when racing! If your child is not using proper form he may still be quite fast but will probably tend to crash a lot and have inconsistent results. Professional instruc-

tion will help them progress as quickly and safely as possible.

6. Be a resource to the parents of the kids in your child’s class and to the kids coming up. If we named

all of the people who gave us advice, both good and bad, over the last year it would fill this page. While

we are by no means experts, we have gained a lot of knowledge from other parents over the last year

and are happy to share our experience with anyone. In addition to knowledge, most of the parents in

our district are quick to offer up parts or one of their bikes to ride if another rider has bike prob-

lems.

7. Match or exceed the effort of your child- Peewee motocross racing is a lot of work for the child and

also for the parents. Parents are responsible for taking the child to practice, making sure they have a

clean well-maintained motorcycle, motivating their rider, and a host of other tasks. Without a huge

amount of effort on the parent’s part, it will be very difficult for their child to have success.

8. DO NOT CHEAT- It never ceases to amaze me that some parents think winning a race for 4-6 year olds

is important enough for them to cheat. We have seen and protested kids with 60cc pistons running in the

50cc shaft class. Parents who succumb to the pressure to run illegal bikes are doing a disservice to their

kids. I wonder how they explain it to their child when they get caught? Well Johnny, I didn’t think you were

as good as the other kids so I made your bike faster so you could win? I also do not buy the excuse that

you have to cheat because everyone else does. If you think someone is cheating, and you need to be pretty

sure you are right, file a protest. That’s why the protest procedure is in the rulebook. If you happen to be

wrong, apologize and hope the protested party takes it as a compliment.

9. Set goals- Families participate in this sport for many different reasons. Some feel they have the next James Stewart on their hands while others are just out to have some fun. Figure out why your family is involved in

the sport and set your goals accordingly. Make sure the goals are attainable yet challenging and reward your child for attaining them. When your child reaches their goals, raise the bar.

10. HAVE FUN!!!

27th ANNUAL RODNEY FARRIS MEMORIAL INDOOOR SERIES: ROUND 2Phillips Takes Second Win at Timonium IndoorBy Len Breech Photos by Len & Ben Breech

TIMONIUM, MD. DEC. 14

Ace Phillips took his second win in two days at the second round of the 27th Annual Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track Series sponsored by the Baltimore County Trail Riders-Cockeysville Optimist Club. While he won the 400 class Friday, tonight he topped the 250 class on the same Yamaha 400. Phillips jumped into the lead immediately from Dillon Cava, John Lewis, Bob Sweeten and Friday's 250 winner, Doug Reinert. Phillips kept a fair margin over Cava during the early going before pulling gradu-ally away. Sweeten took third coming off the second turn on the fourth lap. In the closing laps, he started pressuring Cava for second. Rules for this series are slightly different than most other races in this area. Except for the XR 100 class, a rider may only enter one class, time trials determine starting positions in 125s and larger, and Amateur and Experts run together. Riders are divided into a maximum of four, six rider heats, from which the top four go to two eight rider semis. The top four 'survivors' then go the final. Joining Phillips as repeat winners, and unlike Phillips, in the same class were Tyler Kidwell, who lapped up to the close pack battle for second between Joseph Masta, Kyle Schlimme and Thomas Webb in the 65 class. Schlimme took second when Masta fell four laps from the end. Austin Greenland had to work for his second 80 win. He gated first in front of Brett Pugh, R. J. Hart and Joey Parks. Greenland slipped slightly off the groove coming off the second turn on the third lap, giving Hart the lead. But Greenland regained the lead entering three on the following lap. Hart and Pugh waged a tight battle for second until they encountered lapped traffic in the latter third of the race. Jake Johnson took the XR 100 class lead, followed by Scott Saunders, Paul Shoemaker and Chris Carr. Carr took third at the end of the first lap, with Johnson slid-ing out off four on the second lap. This threw the Saunders/Carr battle for second into a fight for the lead that lasted for the entire fifteen laps. Coming off the final turn, Carr tried to slip under Saunders to grab the win, but Saunders moved to the inside slightly, blocking his attempt and winning by half a length. After banging bars through the semi, Shawn Rothstein and Joey Schueler continued in the 125 final. This time Schueler was first out of two, in front of Chad Gochenour, Ryder Malone and Ryan Henderson. Rothstein tried many times to get under, or through, Schueler, but Schueler held onto the lead. After a slow start, Brandon Robinson started picking his way through the field, coming up fourth around the tenth lap. With two laps left, Robinson tried again to get under off two, only to get caught up in the tires. He dropped to fourth before getting underway. The march to 21 century motorcycle technology in the 400 class got slightly derailed tonight. Bryan Bemisderfer grabbed the lead on his Honda 450, in front of the tricked out Bultaco of Rob Smith, with the Buls of Mark Burkholder and Harold Brossman behind. Smith slipped under Bemisderfer for the lead as they entered the first turn on lap two, and once free, pulled out to a straightaway margin by the end. Burkholder slipped under Bemisderfer for second around the half way mark.

Jake Johnson received an early Christmas present at the start of the 250 Pro final, when he fell after catching Mike Varnes' rear fender. But officials ruled that they were going for the red flag because of Varnes jumping the start, so Johnson's fall 'didn't happen' . On the official start, Johnson took the lead from one of his mentors, the most dominant rider during the 90s, Georgie Price. Several lengths back were Varnes, Ken Yoder and Donnie Mullen. Johnson started to pull away from the 'dangerous to be in front of' Price during the first half of the race. In the late stages, Johnson couldn't get by some good riders who were having a bad night. This allowed Price to close the gap, but not close enough to try a "Timonium bump n' run" on the final lap. Danny Bromley easily destroyed the 50 Oil Injected class, while Tyler Stacey had

a spectacular beginning to the 50 (4-6). On the start, he fell, remounted and tried to rejoin, only to run over the tires, with rider and bike sprawling on the track. On the restart, he worked his way into first on the tenth lap for the win. Bailey Spence again took the 50 (7-9) class.

11Sleepy Hollow Gets New OwnershipAn interview with Jere Swarr, new owner of Sleepy Hollow MX Park in Fredericksburg , PA.

Sleepy Hollow is a well known Motocross facility located just north of Lebanon , PA on Rte. 22 just off of interstate 78. Sleepy got it’s start back in the late 1970’s and is now moving into it’s third generation of owners. They offer two MX tracks at their location .One for youth racers just getting started in the sport, offering classes for Minicycles and Youth ATV’s and a larger more challenging track for Amateur and Expert riders again offering both Motorcycle and ATV classes.

MRA: Jere , how does it feel to be taking over the track this year?

J.S.: The whole family is real excited, we’re counting the days until the season opener.

MRA: Can you tell us a little about your background?

J.S.: I’ve been in the farming business all of my life, I’ve coached wrestling and football for my boys, and I’m active in local government.

MRA: Do you have any background in Motocross Racing?

J.S.: Yes , I rode my first race in 1972 , in 1976 I finished second in overall points in District 6 in the 125cc expert division and I raced the opener at Sleepy Hollow in 1977.

MRA: Are you planning on making any changes to the tracks?

J.S.: Yes, they’ll be gradual but you will see track changes thru out the season.

MRA: How about the Banzai Jump and the Spectator Table Top?

J.S.: They’ll stay ,they’re Sleepy’s trademarks.

MRA: Will your race times stay the same?

J.S.: Yes, there are local ordinances concerning start times at the track.

MRA: How about camping?

J.S.: We can’t allow it, when Sleepy was started in 1977 that rule was established, again by the local officials.

MRA: Jere, what can we expect to see in 2003 at your facility?

J.S.: We’d like to make the track challenging but also safe for all to race there, we plan on widening the track in areas to offer better passing opportunities, better visibility for spectating and we plan to be quick and efficient on track prep between motos.

MRA: How about long term goals?

J.S.: Well first we want to make Sleepy a place where people can come to race or spectate and have a great time. We want to rebuild the bleachers and get them closer to the track, we just want to keep the Sleepy Tradition going.

MRA: Jere, do you have any requests for the racers or spectators here in District 6?

J.S.: We would like to create a family atmosphere at the track, we just ask that people come to have fun and to keep an open mind.

MRA would like to thank Jere for his time for this interview, we would also like to wish the entire Swarr family the best of luck in the upcoming race seasons.

rIVer HIlls trIals rIDersoctober 13, 2002 – Pequea , Pa Pequea, PA was the site for the River Hills Trials Riders Observed Trials competition located in the hills along the Susquehanna River in south central PA last October. Approximately 65 riders showed up on a muddy overcast day to wrestle their trials machines over logs and up rock embankments to see who could be the rider with the least amount of points

at the end of the day. Trials competition is a unique form of “Motorcycle Racing” where riders com-pete on a light weight bike with lots of ground clear-ance and low RPM horse-power. Their main goal is to keep the bike moving forward and their feet on the pegs. The course is set up usually through the woods with lots of hills and obstacles to traverse. Riders get points if they put their feet down or if they stall their engine or go backwards. They have several check points or courses if you will to complete on a given lap. Points are kept by checkers at each checkpoint and tallied through out the day. At the end of the competition the rider with the least number of points in their respective class wins. Just about anyone can participate in trials riding, they

offer classes from novice to expert, women’s to seniors. Talking with Terry Yiengst one of the organizers of the event, Terry mentioned there are a number of reasons people are attracted to trials competition. First, you can pick up a relatively inexpensive bike to compete on, second , maintenance is minimal, you aren’t running a high revving engine and wearing parts out all of the time and third the risk of injury is low because of the slow speeds. My son and I both attended this event and we both thought these guys and gals could do some really cool things with a motorcycle. Their were a ton of spectators in the woods, so if you would like to get a great day out with your family in the wilderness check out a Trials event. You can contact the River Hills Trials Riders at (717) 578-3784 if you would like to learn more. Also as usual MRA is on the lookout for someone to cover these events, so if you’re out there taking pictures let us know, our contact info is in the front of the paper. Jim Bull MRA

Congratulations from Lost Creek Cycles!

Twenty four year old Dave Diver from Canfield, OH is the third member of the Lost Creek team that we had the opportunity to speak with. Dave at 24 is kind of the veteran in the group with 12 years of quad racing under his belt. Dave rides a YZ 450 powered machine in the 250 PRO class on the GNC circuit in both the TT and the Motocross series. In 2002 Dave finished 19th overall in MX and 8th overall in TT , his goal for the upcoming season is to finish in the top 10 in both series. He asked that we thank all of his sponsors , and be sure to watch for Dave locally at the Motorama Arenacross in February.

Eric Pagliughi is also racing with Kevin Mummah of Lost Creek Cycle in the GNC Series. Last year Eric ruptured his spleen at the Casey, Illinois race late in the season, despite his injury Eric still managed to finish 8th overall in the Pro Am class and 4th overall in 4 Stroke A. Eric’s injury will keep him from competing in most of the series this year – he will spend the major-ity of the season working the pits for David Diver, another rider on the Lost Creek team. Eric also wanted to thank Kevin for all he does for the team , he said without Kevin’s help he would not be where he is today. Eric said that Kevin goes way beyond the call of duty and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Eric , we wish you a speedy recovery from MRA.

MRA spoke with Jason recently about his race efforts with Lost Creek Cycle located in Oakland Mills, PA. Jason races the GNC Series which is the Pro ATV MX Series here in the Eastern half of the United States. Jason had a great year in 2002 despite numerous challenges through out the season. His overall finishes are as follows: 250 A – 6th , PRO AM – 3rd , and Open PRO AM – 2nd on the year. More recently Jason competed in the ATV Winter Olympics in Florida and finished 2nd overall in his class. Watch for Jason this year, he will be competing in the GNC Series in the 250 PRO class and he will also be racing in a few local D-6 races later in the season. Best of luck Jason from the staff of MRA.

Name: Jesse SheafferAge: 17Hometown: Landisburg, PARace #: 31Yrs. Racing: 4 total/ 2 * years GNCMachine: Walsh Chassis Yamaha YZ 426F PowerplantSponsors: Lost Creek Cycle, Fly Racing, Ed’s Auto Body, Shuller Enterprises, Grand Parents & Parents

Our last interview with the Lost Creek Team was with the youngest member of the group , 17 year old Jesse Sheaffer .Don’t let Jesse’s age fool you, he is living proof that you don’t have to be around long to make a big impact. Jesse is a motocross racer and going into his 3rd full year on the GNC Circuit, last year he racked up impressive finishes in both the 4 Stroke A and Open A classes, with his best finish being a 2nd overall for the year. Watch for Jesse this year in the GNC Series , he’s looking to bump up to the PRO AM class as well as competing in the 250A class. Best of luck to you and your fellow team mates.

Local ATV Racer Goes ProAn Article About Randy Lehr MRA recently had an opportunity to speak with Chuck Lehr, father of Randy Lehr about the upcoming race season. Randy is an A class ATV racer from Windsor, PA . He has been racing Motocross in District 6 for 10 years now and at the ripe old age of 16 he already has 9 district cham-pionships under his belt.

MRA: Chuck, I hear that Randy has decided to turn PRO this year.

C.L.: Yes, we’ve had a great offer and have decided to race the Pro ATV MX Series.(GNC)

MRA: Can you tell me a little about Pro ATV racing ?

C.L.: The series consists of 10 races through out the year. All of the tracks are east of the Mississippi with the first race being held in Georgia in early March.

MRA: What kind of moto format do you run ?

C.L.: Well, to the best of my knowledge they run a 20 minute moto + 2 laps.

MRA: Can you tell me what class machines they run in the series ?

C.L.: Anything from 250cc 2 stroke up to a 440cc 4 stroke.

MRA: Can you tell me a little about Randy’s quad ?

C.L.: Yes, the frame is custom designed from the ground up by Burgard Cycle in Spring Grove, PA. We use a Yamaha YZ 426 power plant bored to a 440cc.

MRA: I bet that baby hums.

C.L.: It sure does.

MRA: Does the series race anywhere near D-6, in case we want to catch Randy in action ?

C.L.: On April 26th and 27th we will be racing at Budds Creek in Leonardtown, MD.

MRA: Has Randy ever competed at this level before ?

C.L.: Yes, in October of 2002 he raced at the Budds Creek National in the PRO AM class.

MRA: How’d he do ?

C.L.: It was a 2 day series , in his first moto on Saturday he took a 3rd place finish. In his second moto he came out of the hole in 9th place and till the end of the race he passed the National 4 Stroke champ for the win.

MRA: Wow , it sounds like Randy had a great first National.

C.L.: Yes , he would have had a 3rd place finish but we had some problems with being signed up wrong. It was our first time out and we made a mistake.

MRA: Are there any sponsors you would like to mention ?

C.L.: Burgard Cycle , Mike Orpens Hellbound Racing , and Rausch Creek Motorsports

MRA: What are Randy’s goals for 2003 ?

C.L.: To go out there and be competitive.

MRA: Is there anything else you would like to say ?

C.L.: Just that Randy is a real good kid, he does great in school and he loves to ride.

I’d like to thank Chuck and Randy Lehr for the time they gave us for this interview, we wish you the best of luck this season. Ride fast and safe.

– Jim Bull, MRA

ATV SuspensionsWhether you own a recreation-al ATV or a race ATV one thing we've noticed is that the suspension is often overlooked when it comes to servicing.

Starting with recreational applications I'd like to cover the requirements your suspension needs to operate correctly.

I consider a recreational ATV as any unit with stock suspension. Most front suspension as delivered from the factory is what we term disposable. This basically means that the shocks are welded units and are not serviceable, once they are worn out they must be replaced with either a new stock unit or an aftermarket replacement. The rear shocks however can be serviced and rebuilt as needed. Factory installed shocks manufactured by Showa or Kayaba (standard equipment on Japanese ATV's) should be serviced at intervals of 30 - 40 hours riding time and more often under severe conditions (racing). Most ATV owners don't pay attention to their suspension units until they start to leak, the smart ones will immediately bring their shock to us and have it rebuilt at a cost of roughly $100. to $125. The not so smart ones will continue to use the shock, this will result in a burst bladder (the shocks bladder not yours) and major damage to the shock shaft and shock body all of which will bump the repair bill up to $350. Like the Fram commercial says "you can pay me now or pay me later"

Racing ATV's will generally have had there suspension components replaced with ones specifically designed for racing, Axis, Ohlins and Works Performance are among the most popular. Axis and Ohlins shocks should be serviced once a year to maintain optimum performance. Works Performance shocks, twice a year. Keeping up with these services will supply consistent performance throughout a race season.

One area of service that the owner can perform themselves but rarely does is to remove the shocks after every race then remove the springs and thouroughly clean the shock and all its external components. Many of todays race shocks use dual and even triple rate springs. For these to work correctly they use crossover spacers that slip over the shock body. Generally they are little more than aluminum tubing that has been cut to a specific length. Over time dirt will build up behind these spacers causing them to seize to the shock body, when this happens the first and second stage springs cease functioning and the shocks action becomes very stiff. This can be a major problem with the front shocks as they must work as a balanced set. If one shock is working with all its springs and the other only the main spring the handling characteristics will be atrocious. After disassembly the parts can be cleaned with WD40 and a rag. If your shocks have triple rate springs don't mix up the crossover spacers, they must be reinstalled correctly so the shock spring rate ramps up as designed.

Lastly, many ATV's come with grease fittings at the swingarm pivot points. Make it a regular maintenance item to grease these periodically to keep the swingarm and A-arms moving freely.

2003 Off Road Season Begins The 2003 off road season is about to begin on February 2, 2003 with a hare scramble at the

Dutchmen in Pine Grove Pa. The race will be the first of the season and the first Pennsylvania Hare

Scrambles Series, Round # 1. Luke assures us the race will go on rain, snow or shine.

March will be when the real action begins. Week one brings us a race at Rausch Creek and a

GNCC in Florida. A few locals will be making the trip south. Week two kicks off the 2nd GNCC

including the first youth race of that series in 2003. Locally racing returns to the Dutchmen and the

ECEA has its' first round of action with the Snowball run by Gmer.

The racing continues through the summer into the fall taking us into late November. Changes

to look forward to in 2003 are, the Road Winders race at Hurricane Hill will be held in the

spring when things are a little moist, dust should not be a factor. The racing at the BMER in

Plymouth, Pa should also be more seasonable with runs in June and September keeping down

the mud. Mid summer brings the racing to the High Mountain club at Numida, Pa. This year's

race will be a District 6 and ECEA (thanks to Vftr) event. Check the ECEA series as it is to be better than ever. The ECEA youth series has grown beyond expectations gather-

ing more sponsors for 2003 (Thanks to Brian Hartem). The ECEA's Meteor club will be running a 2- day event in November

that is worth the trip to southern NJ.

Check out the www.harescambleracing.com site for more eastern racing. The Western New York Series kicks off in

late April as well as the NETRA events that start with an enduro in February. The ECEA Enduro series will have 18 events

starting on March 16.

Good Luck to everyone in 2003. Have fun and be safe.

What should I do to my bike each week between races?

Many people don’t realize that the mainte-nance you do every week before the race can save you a lot of money. On today’s high performance machines a small problem or worn out part can cost you hundreds of dollars, if not fixed. Here are some of the things that should be checked every week after you ride, to make sure that your bike will be in top running condition for the next week’s ride or race.

The fluids in your bike are what make it operate to it’s full potential; a lack of fluids can destroy a motor. Always be sure to check your coolant before every ride. The coolant helps keep your motor running at the proper temperature. If your motor is running hot you will not get full power from it, and you will also cause engine damage. If the day is extremely hot and you are running long motos you may push coolant out the overflow, which is normal. Also be sure to check for leaks or cracks caused by collisions or impacts from rocks. Always use a quality coolant like Spectro’s Year Round, which is designed for high performance aluminum radiators or the equivalent.

Engine and transmission fluid is another fluid that should be checked after every ride. With the new four-strokes using both engine and transmission fluid you have to check your individual bike’s manual for recommended amounts and intervals, but it is always safe to change your oil after every day of hard riding. Changing your oil frequently not only keeps your engine running in top shape, but also allows you to find problems early. As oil breaks down it will lose its’ color. If your oil is already black when you change it, it has been run to long, and needs to be checked sooner the next time. If your clutch oil is gritty or is full of metal flakes you may want to check your clutch or bottom end for wear or damage. Oil is the lifeblood of your engine and you should always be sure to use the good quality oil that is designed for the application you are using it for. Paying fourteen or fifteen dollars for oil may seem expensive, but it will prevent engine damage in the long run.

One of the most neglected and important things most people forget is the air filter. Each year we have numerous riders bring us their bikes that have destroyed engines, because they failed to properly maintain the air filter. An air filter needs to fit properly and be oiled and cleaned after every ride. In extremely dusty conditions some riders have a spare filter oiled and ready, and change it after the first set of motos. Any time you allow dirt into your engine you are asking for trouble and

the most likely way for it to get there is by an improperly oiled filter. VPE recommends Twin Air’s oils and cleaners. First be sure to clean your filter thoroughly, using a quality cleaner, then wash it with warm soapy water, and allow it to dry. Try not to twist and stretch it too much, as this can damage some filters. Then completely soak the filter in the oil and gently wring out the excess oil, be sure your filter is covered completely with oil! Next allow the filter to dry overnight. The best quality oils like Twin Air will remain tacky, yet not be dripping with oil after drying. If you don’t allow your filter to dry it may actually allow oil to be sucked into your engine and foul a plug or cause jetting problems until the filter dries properly.

Your brakes and controls should also be checked each week. Make sure all your levers are working properly and your throttle tube is lubed and works smoothly. Clutch and throttle cables should be lubed and checked for wear or being out of adjustment. These are things many people overlook until they get to the races, and then are rushed to fix or adjust right before practice or their moto. Broken levers or misadjusted controls will break your concentration and may cause you to make costly mistakes like missed shifts and errors in corners.

Your drive train should also be inspected after each race. Be sure your chain and sprockets are in good shape and not missing teeth or out of adjustment. A broken or thrown chain will cost you a DNF. Also be sure to check that your chain guides are all in good shape and are in proper alignment. A chain guide or roller may be knocked off or bent in a rut or in a contact with another rider during a race, and may not be very noticeable while you are riding.

Of course you can’t anticipate everything that could go wrong with your bike while at the races, but with proper maintenance you cant prevent the most common failures. One mistake most people also make is to wait until the last minute to check over their bike. If you are running around the night before, or even the day of the race doing things that you could have done during the week, you will not have your mind on racing and will not prepared mentally when you get on the gate. After all that’s why factory riders have mechanics, so they can focus on winning the race and not worry about whether or not all the bolts are tight and there is gas in the bike. You have to learn about your own bike, each bike is different and the more you work on your bike the quicker and easier it will be to get your bike ready for the races. Remember, it doesn’t matter how fast you are, if your bike doesn’t stay together till the end of the race you can’t win.By: Dean DeTurk

After an entire weekend of intense competition, it had all come down to Sunday afternoon. The final moto of the day and for the winner, the moment when all of the effort and dedication would finally pay off. Outside of the farm show arena in Harrisburg where the event was held, a cold February air hung in the Pennsylvania sky.

Out of the number of racers from the amateur ranks there came Motocross Man, also know as Eddy Birch. At twenty years old he stood six feet tall and had a stocky build and brown hair. He wore navy blue race gear with green stripes going down the sides. His helmet was dark and plain with a tinted visor and his boots were leather.

Eddy had at one time been a regular on the racing circuit until the day when the misdeeds of another had cost him an important victory and the guilty was left to walk away without consequence. It was then that Eddy Birch became Motocross Man, the mysterious rider committed to fair play and honor of the sport and to ensure that no one would ever fall victim to the same fate as he did. The action grew as motocross Man (riding a custom made 250cc bike painted all silver with a tan gas tank)

along with the rest of the racers sped over the jumps and around the track. Dirt from the ground flew from all directions and at some moments all the Motocross Man could see was the reddish brown earth of the track that lay ahead of him. The crowd began to cheer and roar with excitement.

Up to this point, Motocross Man’s greatest opposition was that of Danny Lapper, a member of the infamous Urban Myth Cycle Club, a band of rogues who were know for terrorizing the community and supported themselves through racing. Unknown to everyone present, Lapper (also riding a 250cc bike) was acting true to the form of his fellow Urban Myth members and had had a device installed on the motor of his bike which gave the motor extra power enabling him to race faster.

Using his extensive knowledge of mechanics, Motocross Man quickly identified exactly what Lapper was up to and just how he managed to blow by the other racers with such ease. Motocross Man sprung into action, determining that all devices such as the one that Lapper was using could only be used as makeshift and would eventu-ally give out if a bike had exceeded certain speeds. At the next jump, Motocross Man amazingly got off with a great height and distance and came to a landing putting him almost neck and neck with Lapper.

Motocross Man effortlessly caught up to Lapper and sped for the finish line. Foiled and angered, Lapper blazed forward in the same direction totally ignoring the rate of speed in which he was traveling. Merely a hundred yards ahead and only two feet away from the finish, Motocross Man pulled off to the side and turned and looked back just in time to see Lapper spin out of control as his motor suddenly broke down.

He continued to fly wildly off of the track until he crashed full force into the wall. Lapper, though not hurt was rendered unconscious and in the end walked away bruised and disqualified. Meanwhile, it was in fact, another racer who took the checkered flag and won the day. Some where outside and parked away from the arena, Motocross Man sat parked in the night, listening to the approval of the crowd. After which he pulled away contented that the Twenty Fifth Anniversary Harrisburg Motorama had ended justly. With the sense of a job well done, Motocross Man rode off to the next adventure.
