A Brief History of Wakefield Park

The Wakefield Park circuit was built by Paul Samuels and John Carter and was opened officially by

John Fahey, the then NSW Premier and member for the Goulburn district in November 1994.

It was built with club motor sport firmly in mind and with the control tower and paddock facilities and carports it made some of our existing circuits look a bit out dated. Track days and supersprints were the usual events with race days for cars, motor bikes and go karts also becoming popular at

the circuit.

At 2.2 kilometres, with an reasonable length straight leading to a section of uphill bends with the loop at the top of the hill and then a downhill run into what became known as the fish hook section and a negatively banked last turn onto the main straight the circuit offered quite a challenge to

achieve a quick lap.

In 2000 the circuit changed hands for the first time with Rob Hodgkinson and Paul Phillips taking over. Soon after the change over the circuit was re-profiled with changes to the fish hook area and the final turn onto the main straight. Both of these changes improved the flow of the circuit, the

fish hook area in particular allowing for a faster run onto the back straight.

Under the new ownership the Wakefield Park licensing and permit system was introduced. This gave clubs a cheaper alternative to CAMS for the running of events and members could also pur-chase a Wakefield licence with which they could compete in events that they may not normally be able to on a level 2 licence. Now the circuit uses the AASA insurance and permit system that which is now being used by a large proportion of motor sport promoters and clubs for events around the

country.

The Speed off the street days that allowed people to drive their own cars on the circuit under the Wakefield licence system, encouraging speed at the right venue and not on public roads were also

introduced and continue today.

From 2001 to 2008 the circuit held a round of the V8 development series, this for many years being the only stand alone round for those cars. The pit lane garages were added at this time, once again

improving the circuit’s facilities.

In January 2007 the circuit was bought by the Benalla Auto Club, the owners of the Winton circuit in country Victoria. At the end of 2008 a major re-surfacing of the circuit took place and this again has led to better lap times. 2010 has seen the introduction of a lighting system at all flag points that will warn drivers of incidents on the circuit and be operated from race control. With the com-plex now managed by Mathew Ronke and ongoing improvements happening the circuit is still a great

club sport venue.

With a great cafe and complete circuit viewing from the spectator

areas enjoy today’s racing.

The current lap record for the circuit is held by Ben Chrithon driving an F3 open wheeler and stands at 54.563 seconds, a fairly

quick time.

Wakefield Park, just another

great part of the Goulburn area.

Current lap Record Holder Ben Crighton from New Zealand

NSW State Race ReviewNSW State Race ReviewNSW State Race ReviewNSW State Race Review Round 2 of the NSW State Motor Racing Championships were held at Wakefield Park on the weekend. The event attracted good fields and produced entertaining racing across all categories, as detailed below.

Production Touring

The Pro Duct Racing team were dominant all weekend, with Bob Pearson winning two of the three races in his Mitsubishi Evo X and his team mate Bruce Stuart winning the other race in his Evo VIII.

Gerry Murphy and Paul Loiacono battled for the final podium position. Murphy was forced to fight back through the field after stalling on the grid in Race 1, while Loiacono did a ster-ling job in his older model Mitsubishi Evo V, finishing third in the first two races. Murphy recovered to third in the final.

HQ Holdens

A total of 30 HQ Holdens converged on the tight Wakefield Park circuit. With such a large field, plenty of action was expected and spec-tators were not disappointed, with positional battles happening all the way through the field.

In the end, Chris Buckley chalked up three wins from the three races, while Garry Pilking-ton enjoyed a consistent weekend with two second places and a third place in the final. Peter Green Jnr was third in the first two

races, but was shuffled back in Race 3, as former state champion Greg King drove through to second position after some inter-mittent problems in the first two races.

The highlight of the weekend was the Race 1 contest between Peter Green Jnr, Duane Cambridge, Clinton Green, Shannon Banks, John Baxter and Michael Kavich, with all of the cars swapping positions on multiple occa-sions.

Formula Ford

David Whitmore was the only driver racing a Duratec car, and he predictably won all three races. In the Kent class though, the battle was ferocious between Andrew Gillespie and John Smith, with Smith winning the first race and Gillespie winning the other two. Ryan Camp-bell rounded out the podium, ahead of Emma Brown who had one of her most competitive Formula Ford outings to date.

Improved Production Over 2 Litre

Dave Loftus was unstoppable in his mega-quick Toyota Starlet, winning all three races by a comfortable margin. Anthony Loscialpo finished second in each race, while Peter Foote was third in Race 1, but retired with mechanical problems in Race 2, allowing Brian Anderson into third position. In the final race, Ahmed Baghdadi beat Anderson across the line to claim third place, a good recovery considering he had failed to start Race 1.

Formula Race Cars

Australian Formula 3 Championship driver Nathan Gotch won all three races, but behind him there was action aplenty, as a number of drivers struggled to launch their cars from a standing start. Race 2 was extraordinary, with all four drivers on the front two rows of the grid stalling on the line. Garnet Patterson found himself in the lead, only to spin off the circuit after a couple of laps, allowing Gotch through for the win ahead of Ron Coath and David Choon.

Gotch led all the way in Race 3, while Glenn Lynch and David Choon staged an almighty fight for second position, with Lynch eventu-ally gaining the upper hand with a brilliant move through Turn 9.

Sports Sedans

The Sports Sedans put on some of the best racing of the weekend, with all three races coming down to the wire.

In Race 1, polesitter Chris Jackson led early, only to retire with a mechanical problem on Lap 6. Anthony Macready assumed the lead, but he was hunted down by ex-FPR V8 Su-percar driver Darren Saillard, who overtook him on Lap 13, as the brakes in Macready’s Nissan started to deteriorate. Birol Cetin’s Camaro also gained more pace as the race progressed, and he finished in third position, just a whisker behind Macready’s Camaro, despite dropping to the rear of the field with an off-track excursion on Lap 1.

Race 2 was another thrilling affair, with Macready taking the early lead once again. As in Race 1, Saillard closed up to Macready in the closing stages, while Birol Cetin spun off the track with a desperate overtaking move in the final corner and dropped to ninth.

Macready again led all the way in Race 3, with Simon Copping overtaking Saillard for second position. Cetin charged through the field only to spin off the track with an overambitious move at the Fish-hook on the final lap, hand-ing the win to Macready ahead of Copping and Saillard.

Production Sports Cars

A Lotus was the car of choice in this category, with Lotus drivers filling the top three positions in all three races. Justin Levis won the first two races, but Peter Lucas bounced back from some problems at the start of each race to win the final. Anthony Soole was third in all three races.

What is Regularity ?What is Regularity ?What is Regularity ?What is Regularity ?

it is where the driver nomi-

nates a lap time and endeav-

ours to maintain that time over

a number of flying laps

(usually 6) of a racing circuit.

Each tenth of a second away

from the nominated time

scores penalty points. The

driver with the least number of

points wins, or the driver with

the most points i.e. furthest

from their nominated lap time

comes last! (You see, you get

excited and forget what you’re

doing).

Therefore, you don’t need to

buy an expensive ‘rocket’, the

family ‘shopping trolley’ can

be just as competitive as the

latest sports car. A car pass-

ing you on the track is not

perceived as beating you. This

has the effect of competitors

not trying to block or ‘dice’

with each other, as in racing

or sprinting, and generally

much safer competition re-

sults. In fact, blocking and

dicing is not tolerated and will

attract a penalty from the offi-

cials of the event.

A completely controlled chassis, engine and driveline package brings the cost to a level that has not been seen in a full sized category of racing in many years. With a full chassis, simple yet tune-able suspension, affordable compo-nents and a bullet proof drive line OZ Truck Stock Car Racing is fast, close and more fun

than you can imagine.

Utilizing years of chassis building experience in the U.S the chassis is strong, the components are simple and affordable, so even major acci-dents bring with them tiny repair costs com-pared to a factory shell based race car. Fibre-

glass panels, steel lightweight wheels, and simple electronics complete the cost effective package. You won’t be fright-ened to have a dive down the inside in one of these!

A fully tune-able set up makes it still the true racers play thing. Ride height adjustable coilover shock absorbers on every cor-ner, fully adjustable, front sus-pension, Anti-dive, wheel align-ment, fully adjustable 3 link rear-end with adjustable roll-centre completes the package.
