Minster Walking Bus is 10 years old! Calling all past Walking Bus Pupils and Volunteers Monday, 22nd June Quex Park 3.15 – 5.00pm Minster Walking Bus started 10 years ago when the School Health Council met with a small group of parents. They decided to try out this brand new idea. A Walking Bus is the name for a supervised group of children walking to or from school. It is made up of at least two adult volunteers, who act as a driver and a conductor and escort the children. Adults and children all wear high- visibility waistcoats. The bus follows a set route and walks to a published timetable. Children can join the bus at set points along the route. Walking Buses depend totally on support from volunteers. The idea was so popular that Minster now has two Walking Buses. One starts at the top of Tothill Street and the other collects children from the Old School’s Hall. Up to 20 children travel on the buses each morning. We have become quite famous over the years. Our TV appearances include, Village Voices and the series “Cathedral”. Famous people have even walked with us including Invicta Radio Presenter ‘Dobbo’ and MP Steve Ladyman. The Bus is also environmentally friendly – it takes cars off our streets and the children really enjoy it. If you have seen us you may have heard the singing! Brian Portanier started as a parent helper, later becoming a Walking Bus Charity Trustee and still walks on a regular basis even though his children, Laura now 18 and Jonathan, 16 stopped a long time ago! Since Minster started the first Walking Bus 10 years ago over 140 Kent Schools have followed in our footsteps (forgive the pun!). To celebrate this fantastic occasion, we are holding a birthday party on Monday 22nd June at Quex Park – we would like to say a big thank you to the management at Quex who have agreed to host our celebration. Did you use the Walking Bus? Then we need you! All past pupils and volunteers of Minster CEP School are invited to join us at Quex Park to help us celebrate. The present Walking Bus children will be there from 1.00p.m. onwards and all children and their families are invited to join us from 3.15 onwards, bringing a picnic and enjoying the beautiful grounds. The whole event will be finishing at about 5 o’clock. Please come and enjoy this celebration with us at some time in the afternoon. We look forward to seeing you. Minster Matters 3EDITORIAL

We normally take absolutely no notice of letters we receivethat are unsigned, especially if they also ask not to be printed, but we received one this month that requires me to make somecomment.MM were accused of always showing support for those whoappear to be against change, whether that might be for the goodof the village or not. We’d like to put the record straight and say we publisheverything in good faith and try to be as unbiased in ourreporting as is possible, however it isn’t always possible togive a balanced view if we only ever hear one side of a story,it doesn’t give us a lot to work with, and we can only use whatwe have, we don’t make it up.I am sure there are many villagers who have different opinionsabout developments, actual and proposed, in the area, butwe’re here to inform everyone of what is happening be it goodor bad, so if you’ve something to say don’t do it anonymously, put your side of the argument and we’ll give it column inches,if we consider it appropriate. The picture of me below shows I have made it to the top ofthe church tower, albeit I had extra puffs of my inhalers, andmy angina spray in my pocket. Along with “Snappy” I wasinvited by church warden Paul Willins to climb the tower, andwe have taken lots of pic’s that will soon appear on the villagewebsite. Snappy told us her legs were like jelly especially onthe last section of the climb, which is by way of a narrowwooden ladder, however we both lived to tell the tale and we’repleased we didn’t say no.In case you’re wonderingthe smile had to beforced, I have anotherpicture that tells the truthas to how I was reallyfeeling.Mentioning angina I’lltake this opportunity to

tell you all that I am off to have anangioplasty at the beginning of June but I expect to be fighting fit for OpenGardens when Jenny and I will be opening our “postage stamp” for thefirst time. Pop along and see us, as I should be preparing the next issue ofMM so you can gee me up to get it finished. So with that in mind I hopeto see many of you over that weekend. P.S. Where’s Zac today?

NEWSLETTER - JUNE 2009

Missed AppointmentsFurther to our article in last month’s newsletter regarding missedappointments, we would like to reassure patients that, under nocircumstances, will anyone be refused an appointment should they requireone. The statement relating to "Repeat Offenders" was used merely to highlightan ever increasing problem and help reduce inconvenience to patients andstaff alike. It did not mean to suggest that this is, or could be, the policy ofthe Surgery. We apologise for any confusion caused.

Repeat PrescriptionsWe regret that we have had to postpone the launch of a delivery/collectionservice for "exceptional cases" owing to difficulties in obtaining thecorrect level of insurance and authorization. We will keep you advised ofany future developments.

Surgery Training DaysPlease note that the surgery will be closed  for training purposes:

from 12.30pm onwards on Wednesday 24th June.Should you need to consult a doctor during that time, (or at any timeoutside of normal surgery hours) then please contact "Stourcare (SouthEast Health)" on either 821333 or 0844 800 1234

Health Centres & NHS Medical Practicesusing 08 numbers

Before anyone gets the wrong end of the stick again, can we startby saying this doesn’t (as far as we are aware) affect our local serviceshere in Minster.

There is an online petition on the Governments website asking thePM to ban Health Centres and NHS Medical Practices for signing upto 0844, 0845 or 0870 telephone numbers, where there isn’t an alternative01 number offered as well.

If you don’t have a BT inclusive package then calling these numberscan cost anything from 5ppm. to 35ppm. With a proportion of that goingto the end user, although the majority of it will go to the service provider.Costs from mobiles could be considerably higher.

It might not affect you now, but who knows in the future, especiallyif you move from here, or maybe you have friends and relatives thatthis might affect elsewhere in the country.

If you feel strongly that this ought not to be allowed then pleasevisit the following website and register your name on the ever expandinglist: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Healthtelephone/

Minster Parish Council Seeks Villagers ViewsAt the May council meeting, County Councillor, Charles Hibberd, alerted

members to a proposal to upgrade Minster railway station to Parkway status.Councillor Hibberd has reservations about this proposal and invites the residentsof Minster to comment on the scheme.

Although the proposals are still somewhat vague, especially as it’s notcertain if the new “bullet” trains will stop at Minster, to accommodate thatamount of additional traffic travelling through the village during peak periodsis just mind boggling.

Minster Parish Council will be considering this matter at their meetingon June 2nd. Please send your views through this magazine in preparation fortheir response to KCC. Alternatively, please state your views at the next councilmeeting through the public speaking procedure.

School Garden ProjectFor those of you who have not seen and do not pass the school garden we

are a small group of parents who have taken on the task of restoring it for thechildren to use again. Firstly, we would like to thank all of the people whohave already donated much needed equipment.

Our aim is to put seven raised beds in to grow veg, which is in progressand thanks to Chris and David for their hard work. The pond is refilled andwe are hoping more wildlife will return. We have at present seen newts, tadpoles, frogs and a grass snake. We will have a fruit section and a wildflowers section as well as seasonal flowers and hanging baskets. We have alsofed some friendly robins and blackbirds whilst we have been doing some backbreaking digging, the young will hopefully do well this year and return nextyear!!

Thanks again to these who have donated but I must stress we need a lotmore! Small size watering cans, gloves (small and medium size), forks, shovels, bird food and veg seeds. You can contact Susan on 825138, Liz 825277 orsee Julie in Ben’s supermarket. Oh!! And thanks to our children who havebeen helping us for a short time before they go off to play!

‘Honesty’ still lives amongst us!Dear Minster Matters..... On 8th May I went to Ben’s cash-point and withdrew

£20, however, I took my card and forgot to take the money! I got in Ben’s andimmediately realised and returned to get it but it had gone.

Although I did not expect it back, I reported it to staff on the off chancesomeone handed it in (I admit I had little faith).

I returned home and 5mins later Ben phoned me to say someone did hand itin,  so I would like to say “Thank you very much” to that person who had toldBen to give it to charity if no-one claimed it.

Well, I will give some to charity and I'd like to say Minster is a better placefor having residents like this and I hope others are as honest as they were.

Also Thank you to Ben and Staff for helping me,Ann James, Augustine Road.

Minster- in- Thanet WI.At the Resolution Meeting in May, Joyce Sharp and Marion Rose spoke

about the plight of the honeybee, and the consequences for mankind shouldthey be wiped out. The resolution to call on the Government to commit more

funding to research the factors believed to be contributing to the bees’ demise, as wellas developing new treatments and best practice advice, was carried unanimously.

With Ann Tweedale’s help, it is hoped to produce a list of bee-friendly plants, shrubs, etc, so that we can all play a part in helping their survival.

John Hughes was then welcomed to the meeting, for theunveiling of the memorial plaque to his wife Valerie. Marionoutlined Valerie's invaluable contribution to WI and village life, and then John unveiled the plaque which is sited below theMillennium Wall Hanging, and now dedicated to her memoryas the inspirational project leader and designer. (see pictureopposite). The plaque reads “This Wall Hanging, Reflectionsof Minster, was created by members of Minster Women’s Instituteas their Millennium Project. It was presented to the village on18th August 2000 and installed on 27th June 2003. Dedicatedto the memory of Valerie Hughes, Designer & inspirationalProject Leader.”

Readers of the local press will have seen the report of another memorial - this timein the form of a bench at Viking Green, Cliffsend - dedicated to another of our members,Muriel Arnett, who died shortly after Valerie in November last year.

Following refreshments, there was a quiz, the four highest scorers of which wouldform the team for the next round of the WI’s Top Team Quiz. Dorothy Butterworthset the questions, which proved very tricky - the debate about whether “Laxton” wasan apple (as believed by the majority of members) or a plum will surely continue forsome time to come.

It was reported that our Darts Team - looking very smart in matching WIT-shirts-were unsuccessful in reaching the final of the Darts Competition, butnonetheless did very well to reach the semi-finals, and we are very proud of them -well done ladies.

Members were given a list of activities for another Dabble Day in October, andasked to make two selections.

Before our next meeting in June there is much to look forward to, with a BeetleDrive, Croquet Evening, Coffee and Chat Morning, and a Games Evening to keep usoccupied.

On 13th June there will be a Garden Morning at 9 High Street to which allare welcome - see separate entry on page 24 for details.

Our next meeting will be at 7.30 pm on 9th June, in the Village Hall, whenthe popular Lee Ault will talk on The Ghost in the Looking Glass.

Visitors and new members will be made welcome.

MINSTER FLOWER SHOWSaturday 18th JulyRecreation Ground

It costs between £5,000 and £6,000 each year to stagethis show and we are asking readers to come along and support bothus and the various organisations who will have stands at the show.

We especially need some willing volunteers over the whole ofthe weekend from Friday evening through to Sunday morning.

On Friday 17th at 6pm we require some reasonably strongvolunteers to assist in unloading the trestles etc from the trailer andgetting them into the marquee. This is pretty heavy lifting and werecommend you wear gloves to protect yourself from splinters andblisters.

On Saturday 18th from 8am we require assistance setting up theshow ground, putting out chairs, siting litterbins, erecting gazebo’sand various other odd jobs. Then again at 5pm we will require helpto do the same again in reverse.

Throughout the day on Saturday we need one or two willing soulsto take charge of the litterbins and ensure they are kept emptied andnew bags are installed. This will require many trips to and fro fromthe skip, so you will need to be dedicated.

At the end of the show we need help in doing a litter pick of thewhole area.

Also during the day we require marshalls to direct traffic whilstthe procession is making its way to the Rec and also to ensure membersof the public are directed to the various car parking areas, thus keepingSt. Mildreds road clear.

On Sunday 19th at 7am we require assistance to reload the trailerand do a final litter pick of the show ground.

So if you feel you can offer us some of your valuable time toassist with any of these tasks then please contact a member of thecommittee or speak to Karen in Attwells.

Project KRAKENHow the Maritime user community can play key role in tackling crime and national

security issues:

"call Kent Police on 01622-690690 (or 999 in an emergency). You can also call the counter terrorism hotline on 0800-789321"

‘You are our eyes and ears, because you know what is out of place’.

The covert operations and sensitive inquiries carried out by specialist police teams, such as Special Branch Frontier Operations, might sometimes seem a world away fromday to day matters in the community.  But information from the people within the communitycan prove vital, particularly in relation to drugs supply, immigration crime and terrorism.

Detective Sergeant Simon Hiscock, from Kent Police Frontier Operations, said: ‘It isthe marine community that are our eyes and ears. What you tell us contributes to anintelligence picture and operational profile that helps us support tactics to address bothlocal and national needs. Sometimes the public are unaware of the key role that they canplay in community intelligence gathering and the difference they can make to other people’squality of life.

In 2009 Kent Police are adopting a national strategy that seeks to improve theinformation on all aspects of the marine community – from nuisance, to vandalism, theft, and national security issues such as drug importation, immigration crime and terrorismissues.

This strategy is called Project KRAKEN and it is intended that maritime usersthroughout the country will start to see similar messages to the Kent Police poster.  Theposter highlights the need for you to report what you feel is unusual or suspicious at ourports or coast and a half an hour presentation is also available for club nights or otherforums where you can discuss this issue with a police officer.

The five police logos along the bottom of the poster indicate the partnership that hasbeen formed in the Thames and Dover region which for policing purposes will run fromSuffolk, through Essex, Kent, Port of Dover, and Sussex.  We will seek to work togetherto protect our coastline by mounting joint policing operations and exchanging information.

An example of this partnership is a Kent Police operation that targets the criminaluse of small fast craft in the channel and estuary.  This operation involves colleagues fromUK Police, French, Dutch and Belgian Police, the Marine Coastguard, and the UK BorderAgency and is one layer of protective security that is provided year round.

The Kent Police Marine Unit continue to patrol on a regular basis and will be happyto speak about any issues – in particular if a cup of tea and a hobnob biscuit is madeavailable!

Editors Note: Also see poster on page 18 for more details.

The Messages of the flowersThe flower of the Forget-me-not is a delicate blue,

this delightful bloom has a message is to say to you. Please remember me for ever and ever, please, please, forget me never.

The Buttercup in its cheery way,has a face that lights up the day.It almost speaks, as you walk its way,

and I am sure you can hear it speaking “how nice to see you out to play”.The Periwinkle on the vine, says “friend always be mine”.

The Wood Anemones amongst their green leaves, send an aura of tenderness, tranquillity and peace.

The Bluebell that graces our forest floor, just sends a beautiful message we all adore.

ESTABLISHED

June 2009

The reserve is set in 16 beautiful acres of abandoned chalk quarry, which has been dra-matically reclaimed by nature. It features many important habitats, fascinating geology andrare orchids. We also house the Thanet Observatory and the first artificial bat cave built inthe UK. There is also a maturing woodland above the quarry, planted in the early 70’s bythe members of the Thanet Countryside Trust, the Charity which own the site.

This month is a good time to visit the reserve, with a number of orchids to see, in-cluding the Man Orchid, Bee Orchid (pictured below), Southern Marsh, Common

Spotted, Fragrant, Pyramidal (pictured below), Tway-blade andLizard (pictured below).

We have 26 species of Butterfly breeding on the reserve, and many Dragonflies and

Damselflies are seen near the pond. Other notable species include the protected GreatCrested Newt, the Harvest Mouse and the cute little Water Vole (not often seen). Now is agood time to see the common and lesser Whitethroats, which breed in the reserve, as well asmany other birds that nest in the hedgerows, the scrub, and the cliffs. We feed our wild-birds all through the year, and donations are welcomed to help out with purchasing wildbird food.

The Field Study Centre has much to attract visitors, including a museum which houseslocal fossils and items of local archaeological interest. There is a vast second-hand bookshop, and also a reference library, available to the public, on all the natural history subjects, and including a local history section. Toilets are available in the building.

Hoverport Site 40 years onIt was on 2nd May 1969 that the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the new

HoverLloyd's Pegwell Bay International Hoverport; it remained open until 1987when it was demolished.  All that remains is the 8 hectares of hard standing the sitewas built on. If you look on Google Maps you can make out where all the buildingsused to stand and the hovercraft maintenance sites.  According to the Kent WildlifeTrust, who own and manage the adjacent Nature Reserve, the concrete has beentaken on by nature and nature is winning.  When walking across the site it doesn’thave the feel of a redundant industrial site but has a wild and open aspect where onecan imagine the Vikings, the Romans and even St Augustine appearing over thehorizon.  The Hoverport area is part of the Sandwich Bay Site of Special Scientificinterest and is also of major environmental importance under the EuropeanCommunity’s Wild Bird Directive (as a Special Protection Area) and RamsarConvention. It has also been designated within the Sandwich Bay Special Area ofConservation (SAC) and the Thanet Coast Marine SAC. The importance of thesurrounding Pegwell Bay area has also been reflected in its designation as aNational Nature Reserve under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act1981

The cliffs at and near the Hoverport site are also of Special Scientific Interestbecause of their geology and are a landscape feature of great importance as theyrepresent quite literally where Thanet’s white cliffs end and sandstone cliffs begin. The site was made more significant last year by the siting of a rare BrightwaveMoth.

Thanet Council who own the site have been advised that removal of thehardstanding to return the site back to nature is not a practical or an economicproposition. The hardstanding is built on coal slurry, which in itself is ofenvironmental concern as it leaks straight into Pegwell Bay. Any developmentwould have to first start with the sealing of the hardstanding.  The site’s problemsare compounded by the fact the run off pipe for Manston airport leads directly ontothe site.  The effects of de-icer, fuel and rubber residues etc could be very damaging

Thanet Council believe the hoverport site is suitable to form part of a RegionalConservation Park . The Area Investment Framework Action Plan (involvingThanet, Canterbury and Dover Councils) includes the Regional Park Initiative and,as part of the development of a green heart for East Kent, identifies the hoverportsite as a visitor centre for green tourism. The Regional Conservation Park will workin conjunction with Thanet's Coastal Park Initiative which draws together policies, proposals and projects at the coast, developed from the preparation of theManagement Scheme for the Thanet Coast Marine Special Area of Conservation(SAC) .

Thanet Council are currently negotiating with the Kent Wildlife Trust, theNational Trust and Natural England to find a solution but don’t hold your breath asthe council do not foresee an immediate outcome.  In the meantime Cliffsenders canmake the most of the quietest and most beautiful of landscapes in the area wherewildlife runs riot oblivious of any special designation it may have.

MINSTER MAYHEMS

Mayhems are dancing at the Twinning Village Day (7th June),Cliffsend  Village weekend (13th June), Minster Flower Show(18th July) and during Broadstairs Folk Week. We are still wanting

new children (aged 6-18) to join in and learn Maypole and Morris dances withus and to dance in public.

The Mayhems had a very successful 2 days at Rochester Sweeps Festivaland generated quite a little following. The quality of performance in a Juniorside was commented upon and they were a credit to the Village and Thanet asa whole (as some of our members are from outside Minster and Cliffsend)

COMPUTER CORNERHave those of you that are running Microsoft Vista ever

downloaded a program only to find that when you try to install ityou get one of those awful popups that says you requireAdministrator rights to be able to do so, and no matter what youtry it just doesn’t “play ball” and allow you to install it.

This can be particularly annoying especially when you know you already haveadministrator rights but Vista obviously doesn’t believe so.

Well here’s how to get around this problem and install the software you haveso lovingly downloaded. Instead of double clicking the setup icon, for the program, with your lefthand mouse button as would be the normal procedure, instead useyour righthand mouse button to click the icon and then select “run as administrator”from the dropdown menu that appears, whoopee problem solved !!!

Even after asking a few months back, I am still receiving lots of emails fromfriends and acquaintances who believe they are warning me of very virulent virusesthat are going to destroy all of my data at one foul swoop.

I ask again, if you receive an email purporting to be warning of a virus or morerecently there are some circulating that are about air freshening products thatsupposedly can cause your house to catch fire.

Please it really isn’t hard to do a quick check through a Google search, byputting in the relevant tag line eg “Air Freshener cause House Fire” or “[email protected]” type virus warnings and see what results you get, before yousend them off, willy-nilly, to everyone in your address book, thus perpetuating themyth and clogging up your friends and relatives inboxes with total rubbish.

THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK !!!Do you keep your software up to date - I bet most of you answered NO to that

one - well here are 4 pieces of free software that will help you to do just that. Theykeep a constant watch on what you have installed and make regular checks againsttheir own databases when you are online, then they report to you if you have anythingthat requires updating and they even give you the link to the updates to save youhaving to hunt them down. Remember most software is updated to close securityholes that are vulnerabilities for viruses etc to exploit your computer so keepingeverything as up to date as possible could prove to be very worthwhile in the longrun. You will find all 4 links available on the downloads page of the Minster Matterswebsite at www.minstermatters.org.uk/

The 4 programs in question are 1/ Secunia PSI :2/ File Hippo : 3/ Sumo* :4/ Update Checker. I use and can recommend every one of these, so good luck andgo get updated !!

See you all again in August, Itsma Hobby*Just one word of warning : If you load Sumo, please ensure you do not accept

the option to install "Relevant Knowledge" - remove the tick from the box whenasked.

A DOGS LIFEWhen a dog is pink and hairless

It is called a puppy,They grow up to be a mischief

So watch out for your sofa,Then getting old and calming down

The next stage is giving birthI’m sure you won’t want that,

No one likes the next stage I can tell you that,One day you go to the park and there

Will be a lead just hanging there,But at least you still have memories

Of the old girl you will never see.By Demi Poulton

Modern nannies day!!!Modern nannies day is on the 5th June.

It is about two nannies who have all the latest gadgets the two nannies arePhoebe and Gabby.

The greeting is: shall we put the kettle on???Most of the time the answer to that is yes, but when the nannies are in a badmood they will most likely say no, which is quite bad for the other nannies

because they can get into fights and that is not a pretty sight. On the other hand their gadgets are:

· Lawn mowers,· Electric lawn mowers with a wheel,· Electric wheel chairs,· Mobile phones (iphone + we can textJ!!)· Socks that play music

And this is our anthemAll nannies are great,

Everyone helps them across the road,And they jolly appreciate it (long note)

For your kindness,SO always appreciate nannies day.

The travelling wind

Travelling on in the dim skyThrough the cold and wet

To sunlit fields of goldAnd orchards of blossoming fruits.

MayThe month of May is full of special days, Saints days and Christianevents. May Day is marked by a Bank Holiday on the first Monday;Rogation Sunday, Ascension Day and Whitsun are important daysin the Christian calendar; V.E. Day and Empire Day happen in thismonth and the 29th May is a day known as “Oak Apple Day.” Thiscelebrates an oak tree in Shropshire which hid King Charles 2nd

from Oliver Cromwell and his Army. When Charles was eventuallycrowned on 29th May 1660, the tree became famous. People wore

sprigs of oak leaves on this day each year and it was a holiday until1859.

Everyone has it. Even if it’s not on the outside, it’s definitely within.Do not ever think that anyone isn’t beautiful. Everyone is in their own way.

Think of it like a road. A road through beauty is a long one.As the years go by, beauty will come.

No-one needs make-up, fancy dresses or fantastic shoes to be a beautiful person.Everyone is a natural beauty.

Trooping the ColourOn the 13th June 2009 the Queen has her official birthday. Her actualbirthday was the 21st April 2009. Each year her official birthday is markedby a military parade and march past. This is known as trooping the colour.

They carry the flag as they march past. Each June the whole royal family attend the parade ceremony

on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall, London. The Queen receives a salute from thousands of guardsmen

(carrying the Regiments flag). In 1748, the celebration of the official birthday of the sovereign was

amalgamated (merged) with the Trooping of the Colour.Trooping the Colour comes from when the Colours (regimental flag of theregiment) was trooped in front of soldiers to make sure everyone could

recognise their flag in battle. This is the biggest parade of the year. By Susannah Grace and Salome Hauptfleisch
