EDITORIALTime thunders on and another month has been and gone. I’ve just noticed
that come next month’s offering another milestone will have been reached, asI will have edited as many issues as founder Editor Kelvin Holdom. It doesn’tseem like 6½ yrs since he left ‘the team’ in charge of his ‘baby’ and moved topastures new. I hope we’ve done him proud and kept up the integrity of themagazine he so lovingly started on his own. I certainly couldn’t do it withouthelp so I admire what he did in the early days and especially using programsand equipment we would all find dinosaurs today. I know we’ve made a fewtweaks along the way but in essence it is still the publication he left with us andI hope villagers are happy with how it is evolving. Full colour has to be ourultimate goal but in the present financial climate that is still an awful long wayoff, but one day I hope we can fulfil ‘my dream’ and we will be able to makethat final big step.
How sad to see the Bell Inn closed, I haven’t spoken to anyone who canever remember it being empty before, and now it is bolted and barred, withsteel shuttered doors and reinforced internal panelling on the windows. It trulylooks sorry for itself. Let us hope that the property owners, Enterprise Inns, cansoon find another publican to take it on and hopefully return it to the vibrantplace it once was. Personally I don’t think it needs to be a music venue, but toreturn it to a traditional English pub with good beer, great food and anambience that makes everyone feel welcome. The bottom end of the village
seems dead without it, so come on Enterprise, find us a landlord who can inspire the staffand customers to return and make it one of ‘the places to go’ in Minster.
I tell you time really flies if you aren’t watching it ! Elsewhere in this issue you will readthat the Rev’d Canon Bob Coles is retiring after 17 years, YES that’s right I said 17 years asour Anglican Vicar. He ends his ministry here at the end of April and his final Service isscheduled to be on 21st April at 11.00am so be sure to attend if possible so we can give hima great send off.
There has been speculation as to whether or not, because Bob is leaving, that OpenGardens might not happen this year, but according to the information we’ve been given topublish this month it would appear that the annual 2 day event is still ‘ON’, which is goodto hear as it is always very popular with villagers and visitors alike.
We don’t have room for a report from the Show Committee this month, but I’ve beenasked to say that both they and the Twinning Assn are looking for local bands and musicianswho would like to play in either or both of their Showcases in June (9th) and July (20th) .Thisis a great time to show others your talent and get you noticed. To book yourselves a spot on
either or both showcases please contact BernieWatler on 07814 214 993, he’ll be pleased tohear from you.
Well, that’s it, as always space has beatenme yet again and so it only remains for me to askthe usual question: Where’s Zac??

CLOSURE OF ‘THE BELL INN’We feel sure many of you now know of the recent sudden closure of the Bell
Inn and whilst speculation as to why and what’s now going to happen to it, is rifein the village, plus the added rumour that Enterprise Inns intend to put in a Polishlandlord, Minster Matters felt we ought to ask the property owners, EnterpriseInns, what they had to say. This was the email we received from their spokespersonon Friday 15 February.
“We can confirm the Bell Inn is only closed temporarily while we recruit anew Publican who can share our vision and take the business forward as adestination, food-led establishment. The site has great potential for the future andwe have already received a good level of interest, but anyone interested in findingout more about this fantastic opportunity can call us on 0800 953 0072”
CO-OP KITTED OUT WITH LIFE-SAVING DE-FIBRILLATORYou may already be apprised of this. However I was recently in the
Co-operative shop located at the Minster roundabout at the top of Tothill Streetwhen I noticed mounted on the wall by the checkout tills a cardiac de-fibrillator.
The manager informed me that it had been in place for about a month andthat all the Co-operative outlets now had these life-saving devices installed. I cansay that the modern de-fibrillators are brilliantly designed - essentially a sort oflife-jacket vest which has the skin contact electrodes built in. All the attending‘life-saver’ has to do is rip off the patient’s top clothing, strap on the de-fibrillator‘life-jacket’ and follow the simple instructions which are both written on a cardand with some devices may be spoken. Anyway, the de-fibrillator jacket ‘reads’the patient’s heart signals and if, and only if needed, applies the correct andsimultaneously corrective electric shock. All the rescuer has to do is strap thepatient into the de-fibrillator jacket, make sure there is skin contact with the chestelectrodes, follow the simple instructions and simply let it do what it is programmedto do.
I understand the Thanet Ambulance Service personnel instructed theCo-operative staff in its use and will be happy to advise representatives fromMinster village. Well done the Co-op!
Kind regards, Dr Rodney Pell

PARKING ON VILLAGE VERGESDear Sir/MadamI’m a resident of Molineux Road and I am fed up with walking mud into my
house because of inconsiderate people parking and driving on the grass verges whichare now just mud, a trip hazard and an eye-sore.
It would make sense for the council to either remove the verge and tarmac itall or lower the price for residents to have drop kerbs. What can be done?
(Name withheld as requested)
Thank you to… Debbie and Helen for giving their morning up to clear thepaths in Brockmans Close on Monday.
What a good team we are in this corner of the village. Well done! Brenda
RESPONSE FROM CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX PROGRAMMEDear Friends,Thank you very much for supporting our Smile International Christmas Shoebox
programme and for the lovely donation of 131 shoeboxes from our good friends inMinster and St Mary’s Church. Please do thank everyone who donated a shoebox. We really appreciate your support in helping to put a smile on children’s faces atChristmas.
I am sorry we have not been able to acknowledge your donation before now,but as you can imagine with the thousands of shoeboxes that we deal with eachyear, the administration side of the programme takes a considerable amount of timeto work through. I do hope you will forgive the delay.
We are delighted that our lorry full of Christmas shoeboxes left for Kosova onSaturday, 1 December. It was a freezing, cold morning, but our team of enthusiasticvolunteers braved the elements and worked very hard to get the shoeboxes on andsend the lorry on its way. I am pleased to say that our lorry was unloaded in Gjakove,Kosova on Saturday, 8 December, but our staff in Kosova also had to brave eventougher conditions due to heavy snowfall. Our team of volunteers flew out to Kosovato distribute the shoeboxes and they really enjoyed seeing the children’s faces lightup as the opened their shoebox full of gifts.
Thank you again for making a difference to children in need.Yours sincerely,Ruth A Doubleday (Director)

MEMORIESWalking past ‘The Old Bakery’ in Church Street just after Christmas our daughter
was explaining the building to our grand-daughter. “This was the bakers. Grandmagave me some money and I walked to the bakers and used it to buy the bread. SometimesI would have a penny roll of sweets.”
This was in the 1970’s when Mr and Mrs Foster had the bakery.Entering the shop the wonderful smell of fresh bread. Different types of bread
displayed on the shelves, square tin, milk, small round, sometimes flead cakes andKentish huffkins. Behind the counter were the staff, either Mrs Smith, Mrs Ackleton(Maureen Collard’s mum) or Mrs Foster.
No complicated till, just a drawer under the counter to open and put the moneyin!! During the morning, Mr Foster could be seen in the van going out on deliveryrounds.
I remember a delighted Mrs Foster telling me Wendy was going to teacher trainingat Winchester. I couldn’t work out whether Mrs Foster was more delighted at herdaughter going to teacher training, or, that she would be away for the following threeyears!!
Name and address supplied
Having had 2 references above to ‘Flead Cakes’ we here at MM thought we oughtto find some information on them for those of us who don’t know what they are, sohere’s a little something we found on the Internet:
"FLEAD" CAKES.When pigs are slaughtered, set apart the web of fat (the “flead”) in which the
kidneys are enclosed. This is the most delicate of animal fat, and it is a pity to mix itwith the other for the simple process of rendering. If it cannot be used immediatelywhile still fresh, render it separately in a small vessel placed in a pan of boiling water. The lard thus procured will be found particularly light and of fine flavour.
But the "flead" makes beautiful pastry if used as soon as cold. Strip it of the skin, then shred it and mix with flour in the proportion of half a pound, or rather more, offat to a pound of flour. Add a pinch of salt, and work into a light dough with waterin the usual way. Roll out, fold over twice, roll out again to half an inch thick; cutinto rounds, and bake in a quick oven. If liked sweet, some castor sugar may be mixedwith the flour.

Irene’s family would like to thank all her friends and neighbours for their kindsupport during her last short illness, and for their generous donations
to Thanet Hospice in her memory. After marrying her husband, George, at St Marys in 1938 she lived and worked with
him at Jezzards Bakeries in Church Street till the 1970’s(Does anyone remember the ‘flead cakes?’)
She remained in the village for the rest of her life. She loved Minsterand would often tell wonderful stories of life in the ‘old village’.

RON BAKER CELEBRATES 80TH BIRTHDAYMinster and Monkton Royal British Legion members
celebrated the 80th birthday of their good friend Ron Baker onSunday 10th February. Ron, a former member of the TankRegiment, was greeted by around 70 friends and family, theyenjoyed a tasty buffet laid on by Sam. Will Taylor supplied aBren Gun on its mount as a centre piece to the Military themedcelebrations and Trisha Hogben produced a brilliant artworkbanner.
On a sombre note, a glass was raised in remembrance ofRussel 'Slinger' Wood, a Monkton resident and former memberof the Royal Navy, a great friend to the Royal British Legion'sWardroom Comrades, who sadly passed away at his home withhis wife Shirley.
'Slinger' will be sadly missed by all who knew him andcondolences go out to Shirley and family. In true Navy style the Pusser's Rum flowed freely, a great tribute to our two goodfriends Ron and 'Slinger'. Steve Philpott

The SEVENTY CHAMBER CHOIR of ThanetWith the FESTIVAL BAROQUE ORCHESTRA
Conductor - Clifford Lister
St John PassionJ.S.Bach
HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, BROADSTAIRS7pm 23rd March
This year will see the fifth in the highly successful series of Passiontide concertsmounted at Holy Trinity Church in Broadstairs. The Seventy Chamber Choir, withthe Festival Baroque orchestra and soloists, will be performing Bach’s St JohnPassion. Though on a somewhat smaller scale than the St Matthew Passion, whichwas performed two years ago, the St John is equally renowned for its beauty andpower.
The narrative is taken from chapters 18 and 19 of St John’s Gospel. The tenorEvangelist tells the story, with the other soloists taking the parts of the characters- principally Jesus and Pilate - and the chorus acts as the crowd. There are twolevels of comment and reflection on the action; firstly, in a series of arias for thesoloists, and then, in the 12 chorales - settings of hymn tunes popular in Bach’sday, which punctuate the piece.
It is a work rich in dramatic contrast, with the quiet reflective beauty of theclosing chorus and the chorales, for example, set against the fierce anger evidentin the baying crowd scenes. Perhaps the greatest joy of the St John Passion, however,is that for all the ferocity and sorrow of the Good Friday story, it is a truly optimisticwork anticipating the resurrection with music suffused with light and hope.
For tickets, please telephone 01843 602332.£12 in advance, £15 on the door
We hope you can join us.
THANET FESTIVAL CHOIR EASTER CONCERT.This year our Thanet Festival Choir concert is a performance of William Lloyd
Webber’s ‘Divine Compassion’, on Saturday 16th March at 7.30pm at HolyTrinity Church, Cliftonville.
Admission is £10 in advance from choir members or from our website(www.thanetfestivalchoir.org.uk) or £12 on the door.
This work only came to light some 15 years ago, as it had remained in manuscriptform unpublished. William was father of both Andrew (yes, he of Phantom, Josephetc) and Julian, the famous ‘cellist.
The work is charming and devotional and we are sure you will be moved bythe composer’s wonderful gift for melody.

AVOID A DIY DISASTER ON YOUR HOME
As Spring approaches, many people start turning their thoughts towardshome improvements and those little jobs that have been put off over the winter, but fire crews are urging residents to take sufficient safety steps to prevent their‘Do-it-Yourself’ (DIY) efforts leading to disaster.
Some DIY activities can increase the risk of fire and injury in the home. These range from fires ignited by blow torches being used to strip paint, to firescaused by faulty electrical equipment which may have been stored in a dampgarage or shed over the winter period.
Community Safety Manager, Stuart Skilton, said: “Whether it’s improvingthe kitchen, fixing up the spare room, or simply cutting the grass, accidents canhappen when safety advice is ignored. The message from Kent Fire and RescueService (KFRS) is therefore; if you are going to do it yourself – do it safely.
“People often make mistakes when they are either tired or trying to get jobsfinished quickly. Always ensure that the task is within your capabilities and thatyou take professional advice when required.”
He added: “If you are carrying out DIY, this is an ideal time to fit a smokealarm in your property. Just three breaths of fire smoke can prove fatal, makinga smoke alarm an essential safety feature in your home. If you already have asmoke alarm, ensure it is clear from dust and that the batteries are working.”
To help avoid a DIY disaster always:· Check you have the correct tools for the job· Keep children and pets safe and remove any obstructions from your
workplace· When checking or repairing electrical tools always turn them off at the
mains· Flammable liquids should be used in accordance with manufacture’s
instructions· Before attempting to drill holes, check for electrical wiring running
behind walls· Fit smoke alarms on each level of your home and test them weekly
For further free fire safety advice contact KFRS on 0800 923 7000 or visitwww.3breaths.info

MINSTER BOWLS CLUBThe activities at the Club are building up nicely as the Short Mat season
is going into its final quarter. Through the dark days and nights thecompetitions have been progressing. We know who the Ladies & Gentlemen
Singles are. The Ladies, Men’s, and Single Gender Pairs are also known. By the endof February the Triples competition will have been played, leaving the Mixed Pairs tobe played on the 17th March. The three league teams are still progressing with mixedresults and although we might not like it, it is time that other teams take the toppositions. Next season we will need to do better.
Over to the other side of the Club: About 100 members and guests had a wonderfulevening entertained by a five piece band post Christmas. A horse racing evening istaking place on 2nd March, somewhere in the region of 30 prizes are to be auctionedat the end of the evening. Any one thinking about trying out bowls during the summershould come along to the Club to get the feel of a bowl, its weight, and which oneswill suite you. A few ends on the short mat could help.
We are well known for our friendliness, so please put us to the test. We are theonly sports Club in the village open every day of the week, why not use our facilities.Glynne Hibbert
TURMOIL IN THE HIGH STREETWe would like to express our thanks to our Community Warden Aaron
Kluibenschadl for all his help during the delivery of our rather large caravan. Afterseveral attempts it was finally delivered and his kindness and patience along with thesupport of our neighbours and the community was greatly appreciated.

JEAN’S AND JACKIE’S ‘LEAVING DO’With the closure of The Bell it means the ‘leaving do’ we mentioned last month,
for Jackie and Jean from the library, has had to be relocated.Jackie gives it to us on good authority that this will now take place at The New
Inn, 7.30pm on 27th March. All ‘old friends’ and library regulars are welcome to pop in, but again please
remember, as we said last month, you are all responsible for your own ‘bar bill’.
BELATED CHRISTMAS THANKSWe have an apology from Lil Smith which she has asked us to print as she forgot
to mention, last month, the Snowdown Colliery Band Concert at Christmas that alsoraised much needed funds for the Pilgrims Hospice.
Lil says it was an excellent and enjoyable concert and she thanks everyone whoplayed in the band for their wonderful music and she also thanks all those who camealong and supported the event.

Have you a Bible in your house?…but how often do you read it?
The Salvation Army want to challenge you to readthrough the New Testament in a year with us!
It’s a highly recommended spiritual discipline, which helpskeep us Christ-centred, nurtures our character, and puts eachday into an eternal perspective. So we are inviting everyone to join us in a challenge to readthrough the entire New Testament (which is less than half theBible) within one year…
From March 4th 2013 through to February 28th 2014,we shall be committing ourselves to reading just 1 chaptera day, for just 5 days a week (weekends free), which willtake us throughout the year from Matthew Chapter 1 toRevelation Chapter 22.
Accept this challenge, join with hundreds of others andachieve something thoroughly worthwhile and beneficial…
We guarantee that you won’t regret it!God bless you as we do this together.

‘At first glance it should look like your classic WIcalendar. Jams, cakes and sewing and all that.Except for one thing...the ladies are not naked,
they’re nude.’A group of extraordinary women, members of a veryordinary Yorkshire WI, persuade one another to pose
for a charity calendar with a difference - no morephotos of Wharfedale bridges or Norman churches for
them. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friendsdrop their dressing gowns, their modesty spared only
by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flowerarrangements.
Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children andriding the wrath of the outraged WI, they spark a
global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves exposed in waysthey’d never expected, revealing more than they’d
ever planned. A very English story with a veryEnglish heart, Calendar Girls is quirky, poignant and

MINSTER IN THANET WIOn Tuesday 12th February at 7.30pm, President Marion Rose
welcomed members and after a rousing rendition of Jerusalem thespeaker for the evening was introduced. Michael Bispham’s talk entitled
“Bees Naturally” was of great interest to Minster Village due to a current localcampaign promoting bee conservation etc in the area and members asked manyquestions about bees and their fascinating lives.
Following refreshments, Marion reminded everyone about the birthday dinnerat Quex Barn on the 26th February and, sometime in the next few months, a mealat St Augustine’s Golf Club. She also drew everyone’s attention to a special collectionat the March meeting for the ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World)to help women in poorer countries.
Treasurer, Ann Wilks, presented the budget for the current year which wasproposed and seconded by members. Following the raffle the President closed, whathad been a particularly enjoyable, meeting.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNINGASSOCIATION / L’ASSOCIATION DE JUMELAGE
Forget the snow, the gales and the rain we’ve experiencedover the last few weeks and look forward to new events organised
by the Association as Spring draws ever closer.Firstly, I’d like to thank nine of our French twinned friends for joining the
English members of the Association to participate in and support the Selectiondance for the new carnival court on Saturday 9 February in the village hall. TwoFrench members assisted in the crowning of the new Miss Minster and her princessesand welcomed them with gifts. Thank you so much, mes amis, for that generousand kind gesture.
The next date for your diaries is very important when we will be holding a quizin the Royal British Legion, so keep Saturday 16 March free, get a few friendstogether and book a table with Christine on 01843 821 471. The price will be£5 per head which includes a light supper. Tables will be 6-8 people and it allkicks off at 7.30 pm.
The next important event will be over the channel for the 15 Anniversarycelebrations. This will be hosted in our twinned village on Sunday 19 May. Ameal will be included with various musical events and entertainment throughoutthe day. A date not to be missed!
In order that you have a stress free journey (and the chance for everyone tosavour the rich flavours of the French wines with no fear of being stopped andbreathalysed), we are considering hiring a coach for the day, providing we haveadequate support. If we have sufficient responses and can fill a 49 seater coach, the total cost would be approx £20 per person. Please ring Carol before 10 Marchon 07745 683 466 if you’re interested in sharing the coach trip. All are welcome.
I will collect a deposit of £10 per person from interested parties, which wouldbe refundable should we not be able to fill the coach (I sincerely hope we can).
If we have 49 people by that date, then I will secure the coach and the depositswill then become non-refundable and the balance will be due 2 weeks prior to travel.
In the unlikely event of the coach being unfilled, we will travel independently, but I will need to know definite numbers in order that our meals can be catered forby our hosts.
If you would like to become more involved in the Twinning Association, oroffer any advice on how we could raise money, please join us at the next meetingon Thursday 21 February at 7.30 pm in the Royal British Legion. New bloodalways welcome.

Humpback WhalesHumpback whales are known well for their singing and theirbeautiful noises. Humpbacks are the only whales that can sing. The songs travel miles through the ocean to communicate andattract other whales. These sequences of moans, howls, criesand other noises are quite complex and continue for hours onend. Scientists are studying these sounds to decipher theirmeanings. It is most likely that humpbacks sing to communicatewith other whales. One whale was recorded singing for twenty-two hours.
