E - Team EDITORIALI’ll start this month with a quick ‘STOP

PRESS’ to inform you all that The Bell Inn hashad a very recent change of telephone number, not of their choosing I can assure you. Ipromised to give them a plug whilst writing myeditorial this month, so here is their newnumber, it’s 825768.

Well I was expecting to tell you all that I wasoff to Romania until the middle of June, helpingout at an orphanage/old peoples retreat, however the organisers have been unable tofind me a travelling companion and the EUwon’t pay for me to go on my own, so insteadI’ve now gone onto the cancellation list to havemy wrist operation, which was originally put off until I returned frommy trip. Let’s hope I don’t have to wait too long, the sooner I get itdone the better. I’m looking forward to no more painkillers and lotsmore sleep.

I will probably not do a spot on Academy FM this month as I don’twant to commit to something I may not be able to fulfil, if I get thecall to the hospital, so listen out for me again in June.

In response to our request for help in putting the magazine together I’d liketo say a big thank you to the 6 people who replied and especially to the 3 whotook up the invitation to attend our last editorial meeting. All 3 seemed reallykeen, so maybe Amy will get her wish to retire from the team by December.Amy - their training is up to you now !!!!!! Best warn them early on, as to what anOgre I can be come publication weekend. Ha ha .

Also at our editorial meeting we agreed to sponsor Amy in her goal to do aSkydive in aid of the school garden so we wish her the very best of luck and we’veall got our fingers crossed that the chute opens !!

The Show Schedule, with it’s lovely bubblegum pink cover, is now on sale atvarious outlets in the village. Don’t forget to pick up a copy at the veryreasonable price of just 40p and join in with the events of the day by eithergrowing, baking or making something to exhibit in the marquee. See the ShowCommittee report in this issue to find details of how the youngsters can get anentry in the for ‘Grow for the Show’ section, which is not the usual plantlet tonurture and grow on. This year it’s all a bit more exciting and has so far provedvery popular, read the report and get youryoungster involved.

That’s it folks. Just the usual question: Where’sZac??

Oh just one more thing, we received a handwritten letter at the library complaining aboutparking in the village. We have not published thisas it was unsigned. We only publish letters if theyhave a name and address supplied, even if we’re asked to withhold it.

MINSTER PLAYHOUSEDid You Miss it ?

As you may know, Minster Playhouse presented the brilliant Tim Firth play, CalendarGirls, in the Village Hall, and to sell out audiences over the period Wednesday May 15th toSaturday May 18th, including, in collaboration with Minster Women’s Institute, a matineeperformance on the Saturday at which Cream Teas were served.

The play tells the tale of a group of Yorkshire WI ladies who support their bereavedfriend by baring all to produce a calendar with the intent of using the proceeds to buy a newsettee for their local hospital. At times heart-warming, at times heart-rending, but mostlyhilariously funny, the story explores the impact of their actions on their families, friends andeach other in a warm, compassionate way that will bring tears to your eyes of both sadnessand of joy.

If you missed it at Minster, fear not, as the same cast will be performing the play atthe Sarah Thorne Theatre, in the Hilderstone Adult Education Centre, Broadstairs, onSaturday June 29th at 7.30pm, and a matinee performance (no cream teas I’m afraid)on Sunday June 30th at 2.30pm.

Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the door and can be obtained by ringing theHilderstone Box Office on 0845 2626263 (local rate number) between 10am – 2pm,Monday to Friday.

We hope to see you there. You will love it.

R E T I R E M E N TOn the 31st May, 2013 Ian Card (Ian Barrie) is finally hanging up his scissors

after 50 YEARS Hairdressing in Minster. After serving his apprenticeship in Ramsgate and then gaining experience in

London working for “Teasy Weasy” Raymond in Knightsbridge, he returned toMinster and joined his father who had been hairdressing in the village since 1935.Ian had helped before when, as a lad, he was “lather boy” for his father when he wentto shave the gentlemen at Hill House Hospital.

When his father retired in 1975 Ian took over the business and it became IanBarrie. At that time there were four or five staff, but, in the 1990’s Ian cut back andsince then has been working on his own.

Ian (and Joan) would like to thank all past and present customers for supportingus through thick and thin. We have made a lot of friends over the years and althoughwe will both miss the chats in the shop, hope to see you all around the village.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATIONAt the time of writing, the final plans for the 15th Anniversary Trip to France are finalised and a somewhat sleepy

contingency will set off from Minster at 8am for the celebrations on 19 May. (Report to follow next month). A big thankyou goes to John Quittenden from Minster Garage for donating a framed aerial view of Minster to present to our French hosts on the day.

On 20 April, the Twinning Association committee put a table in for the quiz organised by the Tadpoles. I am happy to say that theteam won and the prize of £20 was added to the Association funds. Well done all. It was a very close match. We’re looking forward toparticipating in another village quiz on 16 August.

9 June – Fun Day on the Rec. Despite extensive advertising, the BOOT FAIR response has been rather disappointing, so we arehoping that everyone who wishes to participate will still join us on the day. Remember it’s cheaper to pre book though - £5 - or £7 onthe day.

We have 4 willing - ish ‘volunteers’ to pop their heads in the STOCKS for 15 minute stints, but we would still like a couple more.Protective covering will be provided and warm water could be obtained for the less brave. Come on – put your heads on the line (or inthe stocks as the case may be!) and let your children do what they would love to do – throw sponges at Dad.

There are some wonderful prizes for the RAFFLES. We will have 2 raffles this year. There will be a separate raffle for a week’sholiday for up to 6 people in the 5* Foxhunter Caravan Park in a luxury caravan. OK, it may be close to home, but I’d like to move upthere for a week to take advantage of the wonderful facilities available, or maybe get some of my family down (and I wouldn’t have tofind somewhere for them to sleep!!-BONUS). The prize will need to be taken in July or September 2013. Thank you very much to theFoxhunter Caravan Park for their most generous prize.

Holiday tickets will be on sale for £5 a strip, please contact Carol on 07745683466 or buy on the day. One lucky winner will takeaway the prize. Will it be you?

The second raffle tickets will be sold at £1 a strip. The draw will take place at 4pm on the Funday afternoon. Good luck to everyonewho participates. The old cliché still stands – YOU’VE GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT!

Attwells newsagents have kindly agreed to display a list of some of the prizes in their window and also sell some tickets from the shopabout a week before the Fun Day. Thank you Karen and co.

Please remember too that there is a competition to DECORATE A BROLLY. Hand made decorations only please. It’s going to bea lovely sunny day, so the brollies will double up as sun shades!! A photographer is hopefully coming from the Thanet Gazette.

We look forward to seeing the rec buzzing with people on 9 June.Telephone contact details as before:· Bernie for queries on providing musical entertainment – 07814 214 993· Alex for booking any pitches – 07903 882 640· Carol for stock volunteers, holiday raffle tickets and stalls – 07745 683 466 Thank you all.

SPECIAL THANKS & FONDEST MEMORIESFROM REV. CANON BOB COLESDear Friends,I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the many, many people who have

sent me their good wishes for my retirement.I will never forget the wonderful day I had on 21st April with my last Sunday service

at Minster followed by the Reception in the Village Hall. I was overwhelmed by thenumber of people who came. The church was full and, despite having thought I had beenvery generous in the number printed, we ran out of service sheets! The service was verymoving and quite a few tears were shed!

Afterwards, at the Village Hall I was presented with wonderful gifts. I was verymoved to receive a beautiful mahogany bowl with a silver Minster Hind emblem fromMinster Parish Council. It was an honour to receive it. The parishes presented me witha gift of a very comfortable leather recliner (which I have to admit spending far too muchtime sitting in!) a lovely picture of the Wantsum Group of Churches painted by DarylHarding, and a Canon SLR camera!

I have been very fortunate to have lived in Minster these past 17 years. I rememberbeing asked many times when I came “was I pleased to be living here” and replying “Iam, it’s an amazing village: the only trouble is I can’t retire here!” Well I never expectedto stay so long, but I am delighted I did.

Looking back there are of course many memories. As well as the privilege of beingwith the four congregations I have served, I have been delighted to work so closely withthe other Churches in the Village. I have been truly blessed by the Sisters at the Abbeyand the members of the Salvation Army, and being able to count them as true brothersand sisters in Christ. We had many wonderful services and other events together. Longmay the collaborations continue!

The Parish Council’s work over the period has been truly amazing. Early on we wereable to work together to bring the whole community together for our Remembrance DayService, one which has grown in popularity year after year. Then there have been themany collaborative projects including the Minster Learning Unit in the Old Schools; the597 Celebrations, including the ‘Son et Lumiere’; and the dedicated work of the Matchteam.

Another great resource the village has is its school. It has been wonderful to watchit grow, celebrate its Centenary and improve its standards. The collaboration between theSchool and Church has also grown with highlights such as the Archbishop’s visit and theChurch Day last year and the many special school services in the Church.

And last, but not least, it has been a great privilege to be able to serve the people ofthe village at both times of sadness and great joy. It is wonderful that so many villagersopen their gardens each year to help preserve the beautiful Parish Church which is theheritage of the whole village community. I hope this year’s Open Gardens will be anothergreat success.

Now it’s time for a new chapter. I will still be taking services (be “actively retired”)after a few months break, but am likely to be mostly used where there is a short termneed, eg covering clergy holidays. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challengesthat retirement will bring!

I look forward to hearing about future developments at Minster and you will still ‘seeme around’ I’m sure. With very best wishes, Bob Coles

JACK’s BORNEO TRIP ….FUNDRAISING UPDATESince putting my story in Minster Matters about my

trip to Borneo, I have been busy fundraising and wouldlike to update you on how I’m doing.

First of all I would like to thank a very kind personin the village who very generously donated £100…itwas a pleasure to meet him and tell him all about my tripto Borneo and what the money I raise would be used forout there. A lady also from the village gave a generousdonation after I cleaned her bike for her! Also I receivedan anonymous donation posted through my door, so Iwould really like to say a big Thank you.

We held a friends and family quiz night recently, lots of friends and family also kindly donated raffle

prizes and we raised just over £400!!, It was such a success and a fun eveningthat we are considering another one later in the year for people in the village.I have also been car washing every weekend at a farm shop in the village ofWingham with another young lad who is also going to Borneo with me nextyear and we have raised a few pounds doing this, we will be continuing ourcar washing weekends for as long as it takes!.

Our next fundraising event is going to be a sponsored walk with myfamily and some friends all dressed in “onesies”!!, we will be walking fromMinster to Sandwich on Sunday 9th June…if you happen to drive past us thengive us a toot!.

So again I would really like to thank everybody who has supported meand I’m determined to work hard to raise the rest of the money needed for thistrip, like I previously mentioned, its not just funding my trip out there but italso helps fund all the ongoing projects that they are doing out there to helpimprove the lives of local people, conserve marine life, help the Orangutansby planting food trees, deforestation issues, pollution and much more.

For more information about the projects, log ontowww.campsinternational.com

Thank you for reading this. - Jack.

Club News ....

MINSTER BOWLS CLUBWe said goodbye to the Indoor bowling season with a meal, before

presenting cups and medals to the winners and runner ups. Six team membersand wives went to Aylesham Bowls Club to collect their awards for gaining

promotion from the third to the second division in the East Kent Short Mat League. The Outdoor season has started well with the mixed games, Ladies and Men,

winning 7 out of the 8 games played. The ladies only matches haven't begun as yet, whereas the men have won two and lost two. The first of the evening league games wasplayed in very inclement weather resulting in the "Amber" team not doing too well, earning just a half point. The "Blue" team meanwhile did much better gaining 4 pointsand an overall win by 21 shots.

The Sunday "TASTER" sessions are progressing well, with five people coming tothe first session. Four more have promised to come for the final two. Anyone stillwishing to try their hand, later in the season when it is warmer, please contact the clubas we have both male and female coaches available to introduce you to the game ofbowls.

The ABBA tribute night will have taken place as you read this. I expect it will havebeen an excellent night for those who managed to get tickets. We could have probablysold a further 50 if space had been available.

DON’T FORGET June 23rd is our Open Day when teams of non-bowlers competeagainst each other. Get together a team of four, they can be men, ladies or teenagers andtry and win some money for your chosen charity.

Once again Jonathan Cole is sponsoring the day. Last year the winners donated theirprize money of £300 to Demelza House, whilst the plate winners supported a children'shospice with their winnings.

THE SEVENTY CHAMBER CHOIR OF THANETSt Mary's Church

Saturday July 6th at 7.30pmCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

Music by Britten, Poulenc Verdi and Wagner

The Seventy Choir's forthcoming concert is an "Anniversary" concert; not our own anniversary but a celebration ofthe birth 200 years ago of Verdi, and Wagner, and of Benjamin Britten's birth 100 years ago, and just for good

measure we are commemorating 50 years since the passing of Francis Poulenc.

Poulenc and Britten represent the zenith of 20th Century choral music in France and Britain, and it is perhaps onlyin the more recent past that we have fully come to appreciate their contribution to choral music. Our concert willinclude both sacred and secular works, including some of Britten's settings of famous folk songs, and his choral

dances from "Gloriana", motets and melodies by Poulenc, and some surprises by Verdi and Wagner.

Tickets are £10 on the door or £8 if purchased in advance.........go to http://www.seventychamberchoir.com

THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOWThis should be taught at school. Everyone should know theirbasic statutory rights for shopping - in other words, therights you have by law which a shop can't change.Know these and you can enforce fair treatment. It's socrucial you should actually memorise it. To help, ourmnemonic is to call them your Sad Fart rights, as when youbuy goods they must be...

This applies even if you buy things in a sale or with adiscount voucher. Frankly, every customer-facing memberof staff should be taught these rules before they're allowedto work. Yet as they're not, we need to be polite andpersistent in quoting the rights.

DO: BE A SAD FARTGoods must be (even if bought in sale or with a voucher) of...

Quote this if needed and say it’s from the Sale of GoodsAct 1979 or, for services, the Supply of Goods & ServicesAct 1982. For ‘As Described’ always confirm your specificuse, eg “Will this speaker work with my TV?”. If theypromise it’ll work but it doesn’t, you’ve rights.DON’T: ASSUME YOU CAN CHANGE ITIf there’s no fault, you have NO legal rights. So buy thewrong size or colour, or change your mind, and you’ve noautomatic right to a refund. Yet many shops do allow this, out of goodwill, and if that’s a published policy, follow itsrules and you’ve a contractual right to enforce it.DO: REMEMBER RECEIPTS AREN’T VITALWith faulty goods, you simply need to prove purchase. Thiscould be the receipt or any other legitimate record, e.g. abank statement should be fine. However if you’ve no legalright, but are just utilising a stores returns policy, if itrequires a receipt you need it.DON’T: GO TO THE MANUFACTURERIt’s important to understand legally your relationship iswith the retailer, NOT the manufacturer. So if you takefaulty goods back to the retailer, it is its responsibility to sortit out. If it tries to fob you off, telling you to go to themanufacturer direct, don’t let it.DO: MARK RECEIPTS FOR GIFTSIf there’s a problem with an item you’ve bought as a gift, legally it’s you who has to take it back, unless you specifyit’s a present to the seller. Many shops waive the need totell them yet, to be safe, when in the shop write on thereceipt it’s a gift and who it’s for, eg ‘bought as a gift forBob’, and the rights are transferred.

DON’T: EXPECT FEWER RIGHTS ONLINEYou’ve MORE rights buying online or telephone/cataloguebecause of the Distance Selling Regulations. This gives alegal right to send most goods back within a week, for a fullrefund, even if there’s no fault. Though you usually need topay for the return. This covers ‘buy it now’ on eBay too, provided the seller’s a trader (makes a living from selling).DO: SPECIFY A DELIVERY DATEIf you agreed a delivery date with a seller (and can provethis) but goods don’t arrive by the set time, it’s a breach ofcontract and you’ve a right to a refund. If you don’t statethis, delivery only has to be within a ‘reasonable time’.

USE IT OR RISK LOSING IT!A resident has asked us to remind others of the

Stagecoach No11 bus that runs through the village toRamsgate and Canterbury.

Some of our more senior residents fought hard to getthis service to divert from it’s original route and come downinto the village, now it needs people to use it, or we risklosing it again.

It’s a great ride to Canterbury taking in lots of the smallvillages through Ickham, Wickhambreaux and Littlebournewith some really lovely views especially from the top deckwhen it has a double decker on route. It really is worth goingjust for the ride.

The BEST things in LIFE are free. You ask me what it is that uncoils my springs. This is a simple task to answer true.I don my walking boots and off I go,To walk the lanes and tracks, as to me this brings,An unequalled sense of peace,And you'll be surprised just how much stress can be released,Just by standing quietly beneath a tree,And watch the birds flitting amongst the leaves.YVONNE
