Employee Feature! All Year Long!A Different Employee Each Week!
VETERAN EMPLOYEES, BEST PEOPLE,
Tell us about your family: My family consists of my husband Al, been mar-ried for 19 years as of April. We have one son Jake who is 18, a daughter Haley who is 16 and another daughter Paige who just turned 14. I have lived in Denison my whole life and my mom still lives in town also, as well as my sister and her family. I also have two brothers, my older brother
lives in Dayton, MN with his wife and two sons who are both grown and my younger brother lives out East in Alexandria, VA with his fi ancé, they are to be married this Oct. What positions have you held at Hy-Vee? When I started in 1984 I was just a courtesy person, and then learned to be a stocker. Back then we stocked trucks between the hours of 3-12 pm, had stock crews of high school aged kids with a shift manager as our leader. From that I learned to check, I worked customer service, I have worked as an assistant aisle coordinator, aisle coordinator, assistant shift manager, shift manager, price changes, HBC/GM manager, and now Product Manager. What do you like most about Hy-Vee? Working at Hy-Vee has been fun just because of all the different opportunities I have had. I have worked with different store directors over the years and with each one I have been given different responsibilities and have learned different things. People come and go from the store and you get to meet very interesting people - we do get to have fun even though we are supposed to be working! Plus we plan activities outside of work to do like picnics so our families have an opportunity to get together as well. What is something most people don’t know about you? I don’t know how I would answer this question, most people think I tell things pretty much like it is. I might be a little “OCD” when it comes to cleaning. Sometimes I get on these little kicks and just really fi nd the need to have to clean. I’m not quite as bad as I use to be, of course I just don’t have the energy I use to have anymore, but I like things picked up and organized although you’d never know that by looking at my desk, although I know where everything is. But one day I will just get in a mood and it will just be completely clean, at least for the day. What is your favorite movie? Don’t know if I really have a favorite movie, I do like westerns a lot though. “The Cowboys”, w/John Wayne is a really good one, and if it comes on I can sit down and watch it again. What do you like most about taking care of customers? Taking care of customers isn’t always easy, but there’s something about doing things for others that really makes you feel good. As long as you remain calm and stay smiling and never lose your cool it will always be okay. There are so many people you meet doing this job and some can be so much fun and interesting to talk to, some really make your day complete. You do it because you know it is what you are supposed to be doing and it is the right thing to do. Try and make them smile, that is your job.

HOW LONG SHOULD A SALE RUN?Usually two days gives enough time for profes-sionals and amateurs and browsers. The bestday to begin is Friday and run through Saturday. At the end of each day, reconsider pricing andmake adjustments where needed.
THE PRICE IS RIGHTAlways mark prices on everything. Suggestedprice for good quality used clothing is oneeighth the original cost. Check with store cata-logues to get an idea of original prices. Clothingolder than 10 years may be though of as“campy” and could be worth more to the rightbuyers. Usually upholstered furniture costs lessthan all wood.
GATHERING MERCHANDISEGo through your home... attic, basement,garage...and jot down items as you go. Smallitems can be displayed in baskets and buckets.Consider clothing, furniture, appliances...any-thing you no longer want or need. Ask friends ifthey’d like to run a joint sale and try color cod-ing price tags to keep inventories separate.
THE DAY BEFORE YOUR SALEGo to the bank and get small bills and change.Borrow an adding machine if you don’t ownone, to help keep sales straight. Always havesomeone watching merchandise. Keep moneybox, tags and materials together. Provide a fulllength mirror if possible for people to try onclothing. Create aisle like rows if possible foreasy accessibility.

• Personalize a spe-cial gift by embroi-dering or screenprinting a birthdate, monogram orfunny quote on it.Think of an itemthat reflects therecipient’s hobby; ifhe likes to cook, screen print hisfavorite recipe onan apron; if sheenjoys music, embroider a fewlines from herfavorite song on athrow pillow.
• Commemorate aparticularly memo-rable photo, yourown artwork or anycreative design youadmire on an orna-ment, canvas or,
