The Maintenance Team (left to right): Earl Yoder, Rick Hosier, Kevin Wells, Rick Kendell
The Yacht Club at Estrella recently underwent some needed renovations in or-der to ensure safety and aesthetic appearance.
Come by and enjoy the newly improved Yacht Club!
LIFEINESTRELLA.COM | JUNE 2013 | 5
Yacht Club RenovationsBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager
T his year, the maintenance department has been very busy with a multitude of
projects consisting of view and block wall painting in the VCA and ECA, lake and street light renovations, and general facilities updates. The maintenance team is constantly on the lookout for issues that need to be addressed. One area noted by residents was the Yacht Club. From the dock and pier to the building and ramada, it was apparent that there was a lot of work to be done to not only keep it beautiful,
but to keep it safe for our residents. Acknowledging these tasks, they first contacted several contractors to bid out the elements needing attention. The pricing coming back was “out of the park” and the items that needed the repairs were not slated for repair or replacement in the current reserve study for several more years.
Kevin Wells, Facilities Supervisor, along with Earl Yoder, Rick Hosier and Rick Kendell stepped up to the plate and took the project on, in house. The following is a list of the renovations that the maintenance team accomplished at a minimum cost to the community:
• Repaired and painted exterior (delaminating) of overhead doors
• Secured and adjusted track, hinges, panels, etc.
• Replaced ten light bulbs and three ballast (I know that this doesn’t sound like much, but if you knew how high the ceilings were, you would understand.)
>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe
• Repaired and secured boat ramp to include re-screwing all planks and replacing bad boards
• Repaired and secured the pier
• Secured pillar that was out in the water at the end of the dock with cable and yellow nylon rope
• General house keeping to include cleaning rafters of webs and dirt
• Make necessary repairs to ramada from wear and vandalism and repaint
The next time you are out walking the beautiful lakes, take note of how nice the Yacht Club looks. If you see any of the maintenance team out, stop and let them know what a great job they are doing for this community to keep it looking great and keeping everyone safe.

Serving on the largest committee in Estrella, Voting Members hear committee reports, discuss community related topics, and bring information back to their neighborhood for consensus or comment. The VMC then provides the Management Company and the Boards with recommendations based on a consensus from the neighborhoods’ feedback. Prior successful community tasks the Voting Members worked on were the Lake Lights project, which saved the community a significant amount of money; relining the tennis court to accommodate the pickle ball players in the community; involvement in the cell tower installations to ensure the community had a voice; and many more items. Issues that affect the
community, large or small, are important to this committee.
The goals of the Voting Member Committee include expanding communication throughout the community, successfully completing tasks assigned for the benefit of the community, advocating for resident issues when needed and working closely with the Boards and the Management Company for the betterment of our community.
Your neighborhood Voting Member is also responsible for voting in the election of two Resident Board Members to each Board. This year the VCA will have an election for two residents to serve on The Villages at Estrella Mountain Ranch Community Association (VCA).
The Voting Members work diligently for the community, but there are several neighborhoods currently unrepresented. If you think you may be interested in representing your neighborhood, please contact the Community Services Office at 623.386.1112 or email the VMC at [email protected]. A list of Voting Members and the neighborhoods they represent is on the community website, www.lifeinestrella.com, in the Document Library. The Voting Member Committee also maintains its own database of email addresses to communicate with the residents. If you would like to be on our email list and connect with your Voting Member, please email your name, neighborhood, and email address to [email protected]. Emails are used for communication and are
never shared with any other Estrella entity.
Meet the Voting Member Committee:Voice of the ResidentsBy Voting Member Committee Members
T he community of Estrella is made up of a unique blend of homeowners, off-site owners, and renters. Within each neighborhood the residents belong to
an association, either the Estrella Community Association (ECA) or the Villages at Estrella Mountain Ranch Community Association (VCA). Staying connected with all the residents is challenging, so the Voting Member Committee is here to bridge the residents, management, developers and builders. The common interest of all residents is making Estrella the best community possible.
An established Voting Member Committee (VMC) plays an important role in the community. The VMC is composed of two residents from each individual neighborhood within Estrella. One resident is the Voting Member and the other is the Alternate Voting Member. These individuals are a great source of information and a valuable communication link to the Management Company and the Board Members on behalf of the residents.
Think of your Voting Member as the “Voice of the Residents”. Staying connected with them can provide answers, information, and help resolve issues. The VMC meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Gallery Rooms at Starpointe. All residents are welcome to attend. During the meeting Voting Members receive valuable information from Estrella chartered committees and the Management Company.

S chool is out; it’s already 100 degrees outside, and time to hit the road for summer family vacations. Please make sure before you leave to enjoy your vacations
that you store your trash cans out of view. If you place your cans out and will not return within 24 hours, ask one of your friendly neighbors if they can put the cans behind your gate and perhaps keep an eye out for newspapers in your driveway and flyers on your front door.
Everyone wants to come home to a nice looking front yard, so make sure weeds and tree debris have been removed. June is a perfect time to trim your trees before the monsoon season arrives. When giving your plants some much needed water this summer, please remember to put the hose away when you are finished. These easy steps will help prevent you from receiving a violation letter.
With the front yard in compliance and looking great, it will make for a more relaxing vacation and a happy welcome home. Have a great time and see you back in Estrella soon.
Have you noticed an increase in the number of “yellow slips” on the windshields of improperly parked cars? Here is a review of the parking rules in Estrella.
a. Parking Waiver Policy for RVs (campers, trailers, motor homes, boats on trailers etc.) Two continuous waivers shall not be granted. Waivers are granted for the following:

• Light maintenance work and cleaning
• Trip return/cleanup – cleaning, unloading, preparation prior to returning RV to storage
• Guest RVs – parking while guest visits a resident
• No RV may be used to provide additional living and sleeping space during the waiver.
b. Parking waivers for authorized vehicles such as passenger cars and trucks of residents or visiting guest may be granted for a period of three (3) consecutive nights, but no more than twenty four (24) times per year. Two waivers in a row shall not be granted.

Getting Your Resident ID CardsBy Linda Rockhill, Administrative Associate
I n order to establish Resident
ID Cards, please follow these
procedures:
• Bring all applicable paperwork to the
Community Services Office
(Monday-Friday 8am-5pm)
• If you are a new owner, bring your
HUD settlement; this is showing that the
property has indeed changed ownership.
• If you are a renter, bring in a copy of your most current
lease and a property transfer record (the property transfer re-
cord form can be emailed or faxed to the property owner or
property management company).
• If the property that you are moving to is brand new and never
had membership, then there isn’t a transfer fee; however, if this
is an existing property and has had membership, there is a fee
of one hundred dollars ($100) at the time membership is given.
Who is eligible for a resident ID card?• Each property is given 2 adult memberships with full access to all the amenities here in Estrella and any children under the age of 21. If there are more than 2 adults (anyone over the age of 21), they are issued a resident ID card but have no access to Starpointe without paying a twenty five dollar ($25) per month fee or you can pay an annual fee of two hundred fifty dollars ($250) or a five dollar ($5) per day guest fee. If a resident is 21 years of age and enrolled in college or the military, they are eligible for mem-bership until age 23 with proof of enrollment. Any children living on the property age 10 and up also receive resident ID cards. Privileges of the card depend on the age of the child. If your child is not of age 10, they are still listed on the property record and verified each and every time your family comes to Starpointe.• In order to maintain full access to the Starpointe, property assessments must be current.
If you have any further questions regarding your resident ID card please don’t hesitate to call the Community Services
Office at 623-386-1112.

T his month we are focusing on Junior Golf and how
at Golf Club of Estrella we are trying to get more kids

that can be played competitively or casually with friends and

the golf course at 7AM with my buddies and playing 36 holes.
Golf is not just a sport, it’s a lesson in life. It teaches respect,
honesty, perseverance and so much more! As many lessons
as I have taught over the years, one comment is constant: “I
wish I would have got into golf as a kid.” So why not get your
child involved now?
For the month of June and July, we are offering a Wednesday

Monsoon Storms and TreesBy Fran Morahan III, Certified Arborist WE-7255A
Monsoon season starts in mid-June and ends in the last
week of September. Monsoon season in Arizona brings
high winds with gusts up to 100mph, downbursts, dust
storms, high humidity, and flooding. The effects of this extreme
weather can be wide ranging from debris strewn around to damage
to property.
Preventive steps to minimize damage to trees
For trees the damage can be anything from broken branches to
leaning or uprooted and downed trees. Dense canopies on trees
>>> SNIppeTS
prevent winds form passing
through. Rains saturate the
soil causing the roots to have
less hold. The results of just
these two things can cause broken branches, leaning trees, or
uprooting the tree. Thinning out and balancing the canopy allows
winds to pass through with less resistance. Also, removing crossing
and rubbing branches, removing dead, decaying or damaged
branches, removing weak attachments and narrow crotches is work
that can be done to minimize the tree damage caused by storms.
Irrigating the tree properly and shutting off the irrigation when it rains
is also important. Moving drip emitters away from the trunk and
placing them towards the outer edge of the canopy aides with root
development.
After the damage is done
If a tree is damaged during a storm, cut back broken or damaged
branches to a viable lateral branch or the trunk. Leaving stubs will
cause a new flush of growth with weak attachments. If a small tree
is leaning or down it may be salvageable if the root crown is not
damaged. Larger trees that are leaning or down may have to be
removed due to their size, there is also the potential that the root
crown is damaged. Trees that are uprooted will normally need to be
removed.

I ’m often asked how I became a stay at home dad. It was never in the plans, it just sort of happened. I was selling real estate when Hallie Kate was born in July of 2006. Even with a trusted
daycare provider, I started staying home more and more. She accompanied me on any appointment that I could get away with. Then one Sunday, while sitting in a sales office I decided to simply quit. Never in a million years did I think my wife Penny would go for it so I told her I wanted to go back to school. So I went home to share my plan and she said yes. I quit the next day.
Our daily routine is very hectic. Xan goes to Phoenix Children’s Academy three days a week. Hallie Kate is a first grader at Estrella Mountain Elementary. I take a few college classes each semester. For the most part, the kids and I do all the chores so we can spend quality time with mom on the weekends. Add to that, karate for Hallie Kate, every EYS sport for Xan, and volunteering with the HOA, I’m not sure how we get everything done. With all we do, I’m continually amazed at the dual job parents do and wonder how they get all of this done because it’s a lot of work.
I have been a stay home dad since July 8, 2006. I plan to stay home with Xan until August of 2014 when Xan starts kindergarten. I realize I have sacrificed all of those commission dollars, sales awards and probably the one physical belonging I always wanted, a Corvette. Instead, I’ve been to the zoo so many times I lost count. Seen every

museum I know of. I’ve rode on a school bus chaperoning class trips. So as I see it, I sacrificed nothing. This is the best job I’ve ever had. One thing is for sure, no man has ever said that he wished he
had worked more and spent less time with his kids.
John, Penny, Xan and Hallie Kate Compton.
H and in hand, Megan and I shared a special moment while walking along the tree-lined path towards the park adjacent to South Lake. It was a school day, so as we strolled amongst
the grass-framed sidewalk, she shared some life stuff with me. I caught myself both listening and veering off a bit, reminiscing about our walk to school for the first time as she entered into Kindergarten some 8 years earlier. It was a surreal moment in my head.
As we approached the school, I noticed her twitching her hand, hesitating and uncertain with what she should do next. It’s true… within line of sight of the school there is a zone where parents are no longer on their own turf. Nope, this is their house! Before I knew it we suddenly crossed the threshold and into the zone where parents are neither heard nor seen—the “I’m embarrassed to be with you” zone.
I sensed she was nervous about being seen holding her dad’s hand. I also sensed her anxiety was quickly ramping up as I tightened my grip. A look of helplessness spread across her face. “Daddy, please let go. My friends are watching.” With a little delay just to make her squirm, I finally relented and gave her both the arm and freedom she was looking for. She grinned and ran off with a quick, “love you, daddy.”
Not one to miss out on an opportunity to embarrass my third-born, I yelled out in full voice, “I love you, Megan.” A brief turn to express her protest, and she was off.
How do the lyrics go?
Kids Want to Connect with their Dads... No, Really!By Andy Ragone
“One part woman, the other part girl. To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls.” That’s Megan—wanting her independence yet hoping to be comforted by having parents who love and support her.
How do I say it any plainer? I love being my kids’ dad! If you’re a dad, no doubt you feel the same. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are definite moments when I consider buying more stock in the duct tape industry, but the good far outweighs the crazy. As dads, we have the amazing privilege and potential to help our kids thrive. That’s you; that’s me! Dads make an incredible difference in their kids’ lives—the difference that can make all the difference… if you know what I mean.
The truth is, dads, our sons and daughters want more than anything to spend time with us. Wait Andy, have you met my teenagers? Maybe, but if you sought ways to build bridges by connecting with them in a common interest, you would see how much they have been waiting for those moments. It most likely means doing things they enjoy doing, but that’s what a parent does to connect, right?
While she may withdrawal from holding hands and taking walks together for fear of the significant embarrassment I may or may not cause, Megan still loves to spend time with me. Why, just the other day she came in and grabbed my hand to talk and pray together. Of course, no one outside of our family was there.
Yup, it’s a real pleasure being a dad. I hope this is true for you too. Happy Father’s Day!

The Heat is On in EstrellaBy Estrella Resident
E ven though summer does not officially start until June 21st, summer temperatures have already hit Goodyear. With such a wide range of ages and people from all walks of life,
Estrella is always alive. Our younger Estrella residents will be out for summer vacation and more will be riding and/or walking throughout the community.
Regardless of what sport you are playing or if you are simply taking a walk to a friend’s house or to the Youth Club, remember the #1 rule; stay hydrated. There are a good variety of drinks available with electrolytes to help replenish any nutrients you may lose throughout the day, but water is still your best source. Many Estrella residents shared how they stay hydrated and tackle the heat. Here is their list:
• Keep a couple bottles of water in the freezer at all times to grab and run
• Set your cell phone to remind you to drink water every hour
• Freeze chunks of seasonal fruit in the freezer to just pop in your mouth (watermelon is my children’s favorite), especially when the kids are swimming
• Before a walk, wet a towel and wrap it around your neck while you walk
• Walk before 10am or after 6pm
• Take advantage of exercising at Starpointe and then jump in the pool

As Fred breathes life into the bagels through his magical hands,
guiding eye, and charming wit; Carol generates heart and soul into
the shop through her love, laughter, generosity and wisdom that she
bestows upon her customers and workers; then their sons help the
shop prosper through their humor, advice, and caring approach.
All of our wonderful staff is made up of residents of Estrella. Every
customer that visits Oasis Bagels holds a special place in our hearts.
We anticipate our new photographs every month by our “Bagel
Boys” (part of the Estrella Photography Club), the after-game visit by
our “Thursday Golfers,” and the stories and jokes shared with our
friends and family. We recapture our youth on Wednesdays, the high
school students fuel their morning with bagel breakfast sandwiches
during their late start, radiating school spirit by sporting their club/
sports uniforms; then the elementary school students visit us after
their early release, laughter rings throughout the shop, allowing us
to reminisce our days of young innocent fun. As well as special
thanks to our neighboring school teachers and staff that receive our
Teacher Special.
The Oasis Bagel family wishes to thank all of our loyal customers.
And if you have not had the chance to visit us yet, please come join
us soon to take a trip back East to New Jersey by just taking a walk
down the block or a short drive to try our authentic kettle-boiled
bagels that are finished to blissful perfection in our four-shelved
rotating oven. Come in for breakfast or lunch. Be sure to try a variety
of home-whipped cream cheeses, scrumptious pastries including
Carol’s amazingly delicious crumb cake, our espresso drinks, gelato,
and real-fruit smoothies. We also offer catering. Thanks again for
your support and we hope to see you soon!

I n October 2012, we lost a valuable
member of our team when our
trusted friend and colleague,
Councilmember Gary Gelzer passed
away.
Our City Council not only lost a dear
friend, but we also had to find a way
to replace a leader and valuable asset
to our team. With the seat up for election in the next six months, we
were concerned it would be a challenge to find someone who was
qualified and interested to take on a demanding position for a short
period of time. We were fortunate to have many qualified candidates
for the special appointment.
One of the applicants presented herself as a very qualified individual
who was excited for the opportunity. Jennifer Barber not only
demonstrated valuable experience and knowledge of the City of
Goodyear, but it was also apparent that she had a special desire to
make the most of the opportunity and learn everything she could.
Jen had an impressive background that made her a great fit for
the open seat. Most recently, Jen served as Executive Director of
Arizona in Action, a non-profit organization that promoted health,

wellness and safety for our young residents. The formation of Arizona
in Action came as a result of Jen’s work on the All-American City
Award that Goodyear received in 2008. This experience provided
her with a great deal of background knowledge of our community
that benefitted her in this position.
Before she moved to Arizona, Jen spent 20 years in television news as
a health and consumer investigations reporter and producer, working
at television stations in Omaha, Houston San Francisco and Denver.
Investigating issues and organizing them into a comprehensive
report were skills necessary for her TV assignments and these same
qualities allowed her to be an exemplary councilmember.
We were happy to appoint Jen Barber as acting Councilperson. I
have been very impressed with the thought she puts into each and
every issue and decision that has come before us and the City of
Goodyear has benefitted from having her fill the position.
Jen Barber is proud of Goodyear and her pride has shown through
in her dedication to her work on Council and her excitement for our
community. I am so thankful for Jen who stepped up at a time when
the City of Goodyear and our City Council needed someone with her
skills, knowledge and enthusiasm.

E strella Mountain Elementary School, located at the
southeast corner of San Miguel and Elliot Rd., is
looking for something you may be throwing in the
trash every day. They are called Box Tops for Education,
Campbell’s Labels for Education, and Tyson Project A+
coupons and you can find them in your pantry, throughout
your house, and office. My name is Michelle Torrance, and I
am the coordinator for these programs at Estrella Mountain
Elementary School.
They are a great fundraising tool for registered K-8 schools.
Two of the 3 programs will pay a cash amount for every single
label/coupon, when submitted by a registered school. The
Campbell’s program accumulates points in an online account
which in return can be used to purchase school related items
off their online catalog. The money goes directly into the PTO

If you are not already collecting these, please take a moment
and start looking at your everyday items like Kleenex Tissues,
General Mills Cereal Boxes, Campbell’s Soup cans and you
will start finding them everywhere. My wish is for them to be
kept out of the trash and benefit our school instead. It will only
take a moment and you can drop them off at the office right
here at Estrella Mountain Elementary School. There is also a
collection box conveniently located for you in the Remax Real
Estate office east of our Safeway store. I am thrilled and very
grateful for the Remax team to support our cause and place
this collection box in their office!
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected], if

Westar is getting rich! Rich in WORDS that is, not money!
The Westar library currently has a project which is
designed to motivate students to read more. Whenever
a student reads a book, Mrs. Heaster, the Westar librarian, tallies
the total amount of the words read. Then she adds the total words
read with each students existing word count. The more words you
read in a book, the higher up the $1,000,000 chart you’ll get! The
“Millionaire’s Club” chart is located on the wall in the library. It has
check-points that indicate how many words each participating
student has read. Right now, we have a few millionaires and even a
multi-millionaire!
Several of our classes also participated in the 2013 City of Goodyear
Reading Challenge. All of the students who participated in this
program enjoyed it and found themselves motivated to read more
during this citywide competition. We have been informed that there

were 56 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes that participated. These
classes combined read a total of 440,156 pages!
The Reading Challenge results were released last month and Westar
is proud to announce that Mrs. Matteson’s and Mrs. Benson’s classes
took first place in the 4th and 5th grade divisions! Along with this
tremendous achievement, Mrs. McCubbins’ class took second place
in the 3rd grade division!
These are just a few of the exciting events that are motivating our
students to “Go Above and Beyond,” which is Westar’s motto. It’s
obvious that Westar students are fired up and ready to read! So,
Westar is definitely getting rich! Rich with WORDS that is.

A smiling face and “good morning”, “afternoon” or “evening” is the greeting a resident receives as they enter Starpointe Residents Club. The entry staff is available to
make your visit a pleasant one. In doing so, the entry desk staff will assist you with a variety of items including:
• Pre-Schooner Club check-in• Registering for Activities and Programs• Signing up Guests• Providing Information on available classes and Instructors• Offering Estrella Merchandise• Changing Television and Music System selections based upon Residents Preference• Pleasant conversation/listening ear
After welcoming residents to the club, the entry desk person-nel’s primary responsibility is to confirm all entrants are commu-nity residents and in “good standing”. This means the resident must have a valid resident’s club card and current on their as-sociation assessments. There should be no violations or fines owed the association. When scanning each resident card, the entry desk confirms:• The card scanned is for current owner and/or renter and in “good standing”• All family members are listed on the account for access to the facility• The card presenter is an authorized family member and their photo matches the card• Age restrictions for use of the club facilities are adhered to as required by the Community Handbook
The staff is sensitive to delays for residents entering the club. Residents can help by making sure each family member, 10 years and older, has a valid resident card with them and pres-ents it every time they enter Starpointe.
Another circumstance causing delays is the ongoing transition from our “old” system and data base to our “new” ActiveNet system and data base. The staff has placed a high priority for transitioning all residents from the old to the new system as rapidly as possible and thank you for your patience. We strive to make the process as painless as possible. The good news is ActiveNet offers capabilities the old system could not. Since Starpointe Residents Club is a private club, access is limited to Estrella residents and their guests.
One area of Starpointe Residents Club that is open to the pub-lic is the Starpointe Café. The Starpointe Café offers indoor dining facilities as well as the patio area adjacent to the Café. Access to all other Resident Club areas is for the exclusive use of residents and their guests.
We look forward to seeing you at Starpointe Residents Club and ask for your patience as we bring new employees on board!
