This is how the lower part of Tbilisi Zoo, formerly home to monkeys, lionsand tigers, looked before the flood. It was completely destroyed and as aresult, most animals that lived in that part of the Zoo died.

That is how enclosures looked two days after the disaster. While no mon-keys or tigers survived, many did. Those that survived included 16 carni-vores, 98 reptiles, 469 fish, 129 ungulates, 7 primates and 144 birds.

This is what the main entrance of Tbilisi Zoo, from Heroes Square in Tbili-si, looked like before the disaster. It was overcrowded on sunny days,weekends and school holidays.

The Zoo’s main entrance after the flood on June 13. Officials announced anew facility would be built for the surviving animals outside of Tbilisi in thefuture but until then those that survived now shared enclosures in theupper section of the Zoo.

Stencil art on the wall of an old Tbilisi Zoo building was noticeable from theNew Road, which was also destroyed in the disaster. In 2014 this wallcaught our photographer’s eye as she took photos of street art in centralTbilisi.

In this photo, taken at the same place on June 15, 2015, you can clearly seehow high the water level of the Vere River was two days after the flood. Theplace which used to be the New Highway is completely covered with water.

In summer 2010 our photographer Nino Alavidze was shooting theconstruction of the New Road in Tbilisi centre. The enclosures, wherebears played, can be clearly seen in the picture.

The lower part of Tbilisi Zoo was completely destroyed and as a result,most animals that lived in that part of the Zoo died but three bears managedto survive.
