As an observation, when there was no footpath on the northern side of Monkton Road between Ben’s and the New Inn, nobody parked there, since the footpath was installed thus narrowing the road, everybody wants to park there making that section of Monkton Road single width, so maybe we’ve been the instigators of this move to install yellow lines by our own selfishness. Do we need them ? If so why ? If not why not ?We feel sure that most residents will now know

of the impeding doom of the yellow perils coming toa street near you.

A recent communication from Kent Highwaysstating that double yellows will go down in Monkton

Road (north sideNew Inn to Ben’slayby), TaylorRoad, all cornersand both sides forit’s length insingle yellows, plus the corners ofSt Marys Road,

Molineux Road at it’s junctions with St Marys Roadand Domneva Road, Thorne Road at it’s junctionswith Domneva Road and Taylor Road.

Supposedly the Bus and Emergency Serviceshave asked for these as an urgent priority undertraffic safety grounds.

We can understand the Emergency Servicesrequiring urgent access, but it would seem to us thatthe Bus Service to Minster School ought toterminate at Monkton Road and a new walkingbus be started to meet this service and walk thechildren to school from there, and vice versa athome time. This would save any hassles oftrying to get a bus around the estate.

Mothers could also help alleviate thegridlock and mayhem by not parking on thecorners around the estate or better still bydropping their youngsters at one of the stops forthe already recognised walking buses thatservice the school.

If we have to have yellow lines then whynot just single yellows with parking restrictionsapplicable between say 8.15 and 9.15am andagain between 3pm to 4pm on weekdays only,

because these are thetimes when the mostproblems exist. That’sjust 2 hours per day, 5days per week.

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun !! Where did July go.It seems like only yesterday I was writing this column and stressingabout getting pages to the printer on time.

That’s when the headaches started! The files we sent werecorrupted so the printer was unable to download them, this meantme then having to ‘burn’ them onto a CD for them to collect anduse. Then due to circumstances beyond their control they wereunable to meet our deadline, which meant the finished productarrived back here late and thus missed some of the date sensitivecopy, for which we apologise.

The team have taken the decision to go back to our originalprinters, especially as they have offered us a good deal on a freecoloured cover page, which I feel sure you noticed before you eventhought about reading this.

We also have a coloured centre spread this month, showingscenes from ‘Open Gardens’ and the ‘Show’.

If you have any pictures we could use on the website of anyevents in the village please let us know, we are always grateful forthem.

Any mistakes this month? Then they’re all mine, as myCo-editor decided to swan off on a 4 day break to the Isle of Wight,on the very weekend the magazine had to be prepared for print.Seriously though,I hope the weather stayed good for her and herfamily as she deserved the break, but nevertheless a bit inconsiderateto go on the one weekend when I really need her to be here! (Amy- I don’t mean it, just joking)

To keep you all in the picture, I’ve had two stents fitted in myright coronary artery, and have now been sent to ‘Weightwatchers’and Cardio Rehab exercise classes, so come the end of SeptemberI should either be pretty fit or pretty kn*****ed, sorry, worn out,and I know which it feels like at the moment.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who cameto visit our garden, and made such nice comments about it, afterall of my better half’s hard work, they made it seem so worthwhile.

I was even impressed with my dog, Zac, we thought he would bark all day butwe never heard a peep out of him, which really surprised us (and I’m sure thereare some people reading this who believe he just couldn’t do that !!)

What a great day for the “Flower Show”, after all the weather forecastspromised rain, we only had a very few spots right at the end of the afternoon, and in fact I caught quite a bit of sun during the day. Thank you to all thosewho helped me erect the MM gazebo, especially Caroline for rallying the troops, and the ice cream man, to assist with it in the wind. She was right, I’d neverhave managed it on my own, although a few others said it had been funnywatching me try. That’s it folks. Where’s Zac today?

Minster Census - 1841The story of the census in Great Britain started in 1801. It was a simple head count

that was repeated every ten years until 1841, when the Government decided moredetailed information was required. (Incidentally, the population for Minster in 1801was 707.) The public at large was decidedly suspicious of the Government’s intentions;religious objections as well as fears of a means to increase taxes caused theGovernment to limit the number of questions it asked. Resistance to the census didmean that the results were not as reliable as they might have been.

At this time, Minster was divided into 3 districts, and an enumerator had to visiteach household in their district and enter the names of every person who resided thereon the night of the 6/7th June. Their age, occupation and whether they had been born inthe County or born in Scotland, Ireland or foreign parts was also entered. In a timewhen most people were poorly educated, the accuracy of people’s ages was unreliable, and night workers were quite often left off the forms.

The results for 1841 showed the total population for Minster was 1061 excludingthe Workhouse. The Workhouse total was 308, out of these 109 were children aged 14or under. Minster's Lord of the Manor and biggest landowner was the Marquis ofConyngham, who owned over 1300 acres in Minster. But he did not reside in thelocality. The grandest house in the Village then was Minster Court which we now knowas Minister Abbey, at this time a farm. The occupant was John Swinford, aged 75, whowas farming over 400 acres. It was a very modest household which included a lady inher fifties, Jane Swinford and a young man, Daniel aged 20. What their relationship toJohn Swinford was the census doesn't tell us, and unfortunately no mention is made ofthem in the 1851 census which collected such information. John Swinford passed awayin August 1846. He left £400 to be invested for six poor women and to be distributedon St. Thomas's Day. This gesture is typical of the Swinford family who were verygenerous to the people of Minster over the years.

Across the road from the Abbey on the corner of Durlock lived the first medicalofficer to the Workhouse, Mr

Rowland Freeman, Surgeon.(We now know the house asDurlock Lodge.) It was tobecome the residence of manymedical men over the years.Mr. Rowland Freeman's entryin the census shows his age as60 and that he was a widower.During his time at theWorkhouse his name oftenappears in the minutes of theGuardian’s meetingsrequesting some small relief

of the harsh regime for the inmates. The census entry shows he had a daughter namedMartha, aged 35. The entry also shows two sons, Thomas and William, both aged 25 sopresumably were twins. Thomas is listed as a Surgeon and William as a Clerk - in facthe was clerk to the Workhouse and served in this post for 23 years. There was alsoanother son called James who was a Surgeon and was later to go to America with hisfather. In his father’s absence, Thomas took over at the Workhouse. In the 1851 censusthe father is listed, having returned from America - one wonders what a tale he had totell! Cont’d on page 6

Cont’d from page5A veterinary surgeon, Mr. Bamberger, aged 40, is entered in District No.2, living

opposite the White Horse. The census shows him as not having been born in the UK.Another slightly intriguing entry is for a John Dusardim, aged 23 whose occupation isshown as an artist. He was living with his wife and child in Church Street. I haveconsulted many books listing 19th Century artists but there is no mention of him.Tradesmen included 5 shoemakers, 12 tailors (presumably most were in the employ oftailoring businesses in the village). The ladies were less well served as there were only2 ladies dressmakers. Carpenters numbered 9, most of these were probably employedin carpenter's shops and on large farms. There were 6 bricklayers, but only 2 thatchers. The glazing work in the parish was done by one man. Two middle aged ladiesdescribed themselves as nurses, in what capacity they pursued there calling it does notsay. Maybe they were employed at the Workhouse, or possibly they were midwives, which most villages would have had, as very few people could afford the services of adoctor.

Other important members of the local community were the millers. Minster hadtwo windmills, both located at the top of Way Hill. They were smock mills, the sametype as Drapers Mill in Margate. (By 1900 they had both gone, one by fire and the otherfrom neglect.)

Another group of tradesmen who were very important were the blacksmiths. Therailway was not due in Minster for another six years so the horse was essential for allheavy work or for fast personal transport, so one can imagine the constant demandthere was for horses to be shod. The blacksmiths were also essential for the

manufacture and repair of agricultural machinery, tools and household items. There were twoblacksmiths in the village, one was located opposite theAbbey which is now a stone masons. The otherblacksmith was located opposite the White Horsepublic house, and is now known as Forge Cottage. Both businesses were owned by the Young family.Forge Cottage was run by Peter Young, Senior and theother forge was run by Peter Young, Junior.

The main occupation listed in Minster wasAgricultural Labourers. In total there were 195. Theirlives were hard, unremitting toil in all weathers for asubsistence wage. The wives and children would workin the fields at harvest time to make some money for afew extras. If you were unable to make ends meet therewas always the Workhouse up the top of Tothill Street.Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, exposing theevils of the Workhouse system, had been published

only three years before this census. The year previous to the census (1840) saw theintroduction of the penny post, an innovation I imagine like the introduction of theInternet and email in our time. A letter could be sent to anywhere in the country for apenny - not a small sum at that time, but the price stayed at one penny until 1918. Hencewe find in the census a Joseph Mount who is listed as a "letterman". He was located inChurch Street.

Thanet Hunt had kennels located where the Police houses used to be in Tothill Street. The village was served by at least 3 shops, all located in Church Street - in fact they werestill trading up until quite recent times. There was the butcher, John Hasler, located whereWalsingham House is now and next door was Steven Cullen, Grocer and next door to himwas the village baker, William Kitchingham. There were probably other shops in thevillage but they are not indicated in the census. The village schoolhouse was next to thebutcher’s shop where the present village hall now stands. There is a schoolmaster in thecensus, an Edward May aged 40 with his wife Ann and 7 children. A carrier service wasprovided by a Mr. Bird located near the White Horse.

The Coastguard on the Sandwich Road was officially known as the North ShoreStation. It was staffed by 9 men. There are 14 entries who give their occupation asFarmer, the name of there farms is not listed except for two or three. One of the farmersis a lady, Elizabeth Clark, located in Durlock. She was 60 years old so was probably awidow keeping the farm going on her own. There are 4 publicans listed but only theWhite Horse is named, presumably the other three would be The Bell, New Inn and theProspect Inn. Apart from St. Mary's Church, there was also a Methodist Chapel in thevillage, located behind the baker’s shop in Church Street. It was a wooden building andwas the outcome of a visit to the village by Charles Wesley when on a preaching throughKent. A Methodist Society was formed in the village and the chapel was built in 1797. Itwas eventually replaced by the present chapel in 1850 but alas this has now beenconverted into flats. This census took place 168 years ago and the picture it paints is how self-sufficient thevillage was at this time. Between this census and the 1851 census the railway arrived inMinster. This was to bring a lot of benefits to the village by opening up new markets andopportunities for the future.

'Cream Teas' were the order of July: one in Marionand Rodney Rose's lovely garden, and another atMarshside where we joined ladies from other WIs in theAcol group - 300 scones having been baked by a Monktonmember! Apart from Bat and Trap, wellie throwing

was on offer - Marion being the champion. It being the 90th Year since the founding of the East Kent Federation of

Women's Institutes, several members also attended a Celebration GardenParty at Goodnestone Park, for refreshments, including birthday cake, and astroll in the gardens. And we must not forget the Sunshine Club's outingto The Pines Gardens at St Margarets, with guess what - a cream tea!

At the July meeting, Chas Wingrove and Ian Reynolds from TigerFreestyle Martial Arts spoke about

self-defence, gave demonstrations, and the session ended with someintrepid 'volunteers' practising what they had been shown - and enjoyingthemselves in the process. What certainly gave 'food for thought' was a shortvideo showing the uses to which a walking stick could be put.

Each year we award a bursary towards a course at the WI college, Denman, and Virginia Linihan spoke about her course on crewel embroidery, andbrought along her work to show us, together with photographs of the Collegeand its grounds.

Our Quiz Team took part in the Group Round of the WI Top Team Quiz, held at Garlinge - an enjoyable evening resulted in third place for the team.An evening of Bat and Trap against Viking WI resulted in a win for theMinster team, and we are looking forward to the return match (and fish andchip supper!).

We do not meet again now until 8th September, at 7.30 pm in the VillageHall, when Mrs P Daniels will speak on Morris Dancing Visitors and newmembers will be made welcome.

‘WHEELS FOR RALPH”You may well have heard

about the campaign set up toraise funds for a 2 year oldboy called Ralph Mattison-Evans. Ralph lives in Minsterand was born with a conditioncalled Nemaline Myopathy. This means in basic terms thathe is virually paralysed, canonly make sounds with nospeech, is fed through a tube inhis stomach and is kept alivevia a machine that breathes for

him attached to a tube in his throat. Ralph requires a speciallyadapted vehicle to enable him to go out and visit places otherchildren take for granted. As he needs to travel lying downthere is no provision within the benefits system to help him.

A number of local establishments are putting onfundraising events for Ralph which I know are beingadvertised around the area. However, the "Wheels for Ralph"fundraising team are staging a Fun Day and would like yourhelp to advertise this event as well as raise local awareness ofRalph.

The Fun Day is on Sunday 30th August 2009 from 12noon - 5pm on the Minster Recreation Ground. There will benumerous stalls, a Martial Arts Display Team, Bouncy Castle, and much more. There will also be a Children’s Fancy Dresscompetition at 2pm, entry 1.00.

An appeal is also made to any local businesses who maywish to help us both on the Fun Day and for future fundraisingevents by donating their time or services.

MINSTER PLAYHOUSEWOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL WHO SUPPORTED THIS YEARS

MAY PLAY ‘CAUGHT IN THE NET’IT WAS VERY WELL RECEIVED - REVIEW BELOW

The Minster Players ‘Caught in the Net’1. The recent production of the Ray Cooney’s farce ‘Caught in the Net’

by the Minster players was a resounding success.2. Now in it’s 30th year, The Minster Playhouse have built up a well

deserved reputation for bringing entertaining pieces to the localstage, putting on an unusual Panto as well as one act and full lengthplays. They have a strong core of experienced players and backstagecrew and make a feature of bringing forward keen young talent.

3. ‘Caught in the net’ recounts the feverish endeavours of a bigamist toprevent his son by one wife and his daughter by the other frommeeting and bringing his cosy alternative life-style to a calamitousend. He drags his reluctant lodger into the intrigue who also has anirascible father to contend with. The play has a brilliantly funnyscript and fairly crackles with both verbal and visual gags. SteveClement played the bigamist with barely concealed desperation.Ruth Clement and Jo Mulgrew as the two wives were motherly andcaring displaying just a hint of shock and growing unease at thestrange developments. Terry Wood was excellent as the manipulatedlodger who slowly goes mad trying to satisfy everyone. NealMorcom showed his versatility in the cameo role of the lewd andlecherous Dad. Elliot Eaton- Brown and Sophie Lynch, the twoyoungsters of the cast at 13 and 14 years old respectively gaveassured and impressive performances playing the son and daughter,Gavin and Vicky: they showed huge promise for the future.

4. This was a well rehearsed and well presented play which gave theaudience a great night out.

5. Congratulations to the director, Debbie Munro, and all theparticipants on a highly polished and accomplished show.

Minster Flower Show 2009– quick reflectionsThe day started at 7 – well actually I’d been awake about2 hours worrying! At 7 I was at the grounds and standinginside an empty but prepared marquee. By 9 I washolding down a part made small “party tent” to preventLouise being blown to Cliffsend. There were similarsights all over the grounds as the wind decided to

increase to a force 6 (at least)!4 hours later I was by the British Legion giving out wrist bands to theCarnival Courts and other floats. It was the first time for about 10 years I’dseen the start of the parade and everyone gathering. There is a special air ofexcitement at the grounds as the whole Parade arrives; and I still get a senseof sheer admiration that everyone in the Village can pull together so muchto make this one day feel special. Judging from the smiling faces otherpeople also find that moment of the Parade arriving special. The reports from the grounds were all positive. The Deal junior CarnivalCourt loved judging the skate competition and it was nice to see somedifferent faces participating. Ben Mitchell enjoyed singing here and hasasked to come back next year. One of the Flower stalls said it was muchbetter than some of the other shows they have done as it had a more friendlycommunity atmosphere. There may have been some minor hiccups, one ortwo of you may have been upset that there was something we didn’t getright; but overall it felt like a good day.A good day does not happen by magic; a number of you do huge amounts ofpreparation for show tent entries (well done it looked lovely) and the floats, there are also a small dedicated number of people who make your day runreasonably smoothly. Up for special mention the Cooper family (includingLouise of the being blown away incident); the Bar crew; the Flower ShowCommittee and friends in yellow T-shirts; Doreen for a stirling stint on theraffle tickets; Paul Cornwall for running the Showcase; the Bowls Club;Rob the paramedic and his plasters; and the unknown ones of you who tidedaway your litter. Thank You.If anyone took photos (those of us in yellow tend not to have time) andwould like to see them on the website – please direct them towards RayOwen (raffle ticket folder extraordinaire)with your name attached so youcan get some credit for your efforts.Thank you all for your continued support. See you next year? 124 yearsold!! The show not me, although I do feel it by the end of the day.Dominique VaughanChairman Flower Show Committee

As an extra David Kemp said he thought it was the best he had beento for Parade, atmosphere, marquee quality of entries, everyone fromgrandparents to little ones having a good time. For a Village Show it'samazing what we can do together. Saw him in Attwells and Karen wasbrave enough to ask him

LONDON MARATHON REPORT

Well I have finally done it. It may have taken mefive hours on a very hot and sunny day but I ran all theway and am really proud to have competed in theLondon Marathon. Most importantly I have raised£1800 for the British Heart Foundation, which I couldnot have achieved without all your generosity andhelp.I would especially like to thank Andy at Cliffe’s thebutchers for doing a great job in the filling of mycollection tin, as well as their own generous donation,Julie in The Salon for her huge effort in collecting

donations for me, and also the very generous donations from Eagle Vets,Jonathan Cole and Egan Dental Care in Birchington.I was overwhelmed by the generosity of Minster residents and the localbusinesses and the money I have raised will make a huge difference to the BritishHeart Foundation. I would also like to say thank you to all of those who spoke tome or gave me a wave on my gruelling training sessions – it really helped to keepme going.Once again a really big thank youOdette Collard-Woolmer, 61 Monkton Road.

MINSTER GUIDES - CHANGING THE WORLD1st Minster Guides have been researching the damage we are doing to the

world including deforestation, and the effects its having on the animals thatinhabit these areas, as well as the pollution caused by the rubbish we throw

into the seas andoceans, killingturtles, dolphins andalbatrosses.

They also hadvegetables and herbsto grow and bringback later in the term,to show that growingyour own vegetables, fruit and herbs is oneof the ways you canhelp change theworld.

The girls hadseveral other tasks to complete. In the picture are just some of the guides withtheir vegetables and herbs and they have now completed their ‘CHANGINGTHE WORLD’ badge

Congratulations to all the guides from all the leadersWELL DONE.

Thank you!A huge “Thank you” to everyone who made this year’s Open

Gardens another successful occasion; the Gardeners, visitors andvillagers who each played their part.

A special thanks to the Gardeners who put so much effort intopreparing their gardens and so generously share them with us – andmanage to enjoy themselves at the same time!

Also a big thank you to Jack and Sallie Clifton for theirgenerosity in letting us use their beautiful garden and the marqueethe day after their daughter, Pippa’s wedding.

We had a lovely family fun afternoon in the garden and afabulous dance in the marquee in the evening. Thanks to MikeTellick and his band for providing the big band sound, and to allthe helpers that made it possible.

Rev’d Bob Coles

Open Gardens 2010!At the usual de-brief meeting this year’s gardeners agreed to holdthe event again next year. Please note: we have decided to try a week earlier, 12th & 13th Juneto avoid clashing with the “Big Event” and “Father’s Day”.Please let Rev’d Bob Coles (821250) know if you are thinking ofentering your garden next year.

Handy Hints in the Hot Weather1. Wear sun lotion2. Wear a hat3. Wear some sunglasses4. Drink plenty of fluid- mainly cool drinks because they

will keep you cooler than hot ones5. Cover up so the sun can’t get to your skin- e.g. don’t

wear clothes that show lots of your skin, also wearcool clothes

6. Don’t leave children and dogs in the car without win-dows down- cars can be like ovens so keep them coolas well
