As well as collecting the full cost of the torch and all the ancillary items that went with it (contents of the fat envelope), she also had enough left over to purchase two large silver photo frames (contents of the parcel) and a limited edition book that the Olympic Games Committee have had printed to commemorate the torchbearers right across the country. So, for your generosity I truly thank you all and to Karen I send two very special thank you’s, firstly for nominating me to carry the torch and secondly for this collection which I wasn’t expecting. EDITORIALYou may notice we’re getting short of members on the ‘E’

team (see lack of photo’s on left) as we’ve recently lost anothermember, that being young Katie, who sadly hadn’t been with us

for too long, and especially as she was getting on so well. But shehas decided to leave us, at least for now, as her health is causingher some concerns. We wish her well and hope that we may seeher back on the team in the not too distant future.

That being said, we are therefore, again, actively seekingvolunteers to come and join us, to keep work loads down andmoral up, by helping to get this magazine out on time.Interested ? Please contact one of the team and let us know.

If you’ve read the front cover this month you’ll see I’ve triedmy best to say my thanks to everyone who kindly “donated to thecause” and I also make mention of the number of photo’s I’ve hadtaken, not least of which some of them were with the Sisters atthe Abbey, whom I went to visit whilst the Olympics were still on(they were watching the gymnastics when I arrived and I tried toget them to run around the front lawns passing the torch to eachother as in a relay race, but they declined the offer - can’t say Iblame them as it was quite hot and sticky that day). If there is

anyone else who would like a photo with the torch, be that an individual ora local group then please get in contact with me and I’ll try to arrange aconvenient time and place for us both.

Whilst I have never asked for any kind of payment from those whowanted photo’s with the torch there were some people at the Show whoinsisted on giving me a donation, which in turn I am now going to pass on toMinster Matters (a worthy cause close to my heart!), so I hope that sits wellwith those who were kind enough to put a few bob in the tin.

On the back of carrying the torch and my position here at MM towers, members of the ‘E’ team have been asked to do a bit on the radio withAcademy FM at their Thanet studio on Sunday 26th Aug around 8pm withHoward Evans. So if you’ve nothing better to do and you can get AcademyFM on your radio then listen in to hear us promoting the village and themagazine. Let’s hope we don’t get too mike shy !!

Finally, at least as far as my editorial is concerned, I want to ask ifthere is anyone in the village who has a copy of Josh Macrae singing‘Messing About On The River’ that I can borrow to record, or maybe ifysomeone can send me a MP3 copy via email, I don’t mind which.I know ‘I’m Sad’Please note that as from this month our subscription rates have changed, the cost of a single issue has risen to £1.70 whilst 11 copies haveincreased to £16.50

Well, that’s itspace has beatenme yet again, soat last I can stopall this wafflingand say that itonly remains forme to ask theusual question:

Where’s Zac??

MINSTER ABBEY BENEDICTINE NUNS WELCOME VILLAGESCHOOL FOR “ABBEY DAYS”

At the end of June, over a period of three days, almost 600 children, parents, and teachers from Minster Primary School came to spend the daywith the Benedictine Nuns of Minster Abbey. “ABBEY DAYS”, was onethe events to mark the 75th anniversary of the refoundation of MinsterAbbey. The invitation of the sisters to Minster Primary school was plannedin order to provide an opportunity for the children of the village of Minsterto learn more about the important historical significance of the 7th centuryfoundation as well as to allow the children to experience firsthand a livingmonastic community.

The excited sounds of the youngest children as they fed the ducks andpicnicked in the grounds of Parkminster was a sure sign of how much theyenjoyed the Abbey experience.

The teachers and sisters who planned the day together tried to incorporatevarious activities which would enable the children to experience life at theAbbey in the twenty-first century.

Activities included a “photo-trail” where the children were instructed toexplore the grounds of the monastery and discover various interestinghistorical effects. Whilst some children were on their investigations, otherswere sitting on the Abbey lawns, painting and drawing various aspects ofthe ancient Saxon and Norman buildings.

Each group visited the chapel where the sisters welcomed the childrenand gave them an explanation of the place of prayer in the life of the sisters. The children were given an opportunity to ring the chapel bells, to feel thesmooth texture of the ancient yew tree of which the altar is built, to learnsomething about some of the various symbols used in the liturgy and topersonally experience the silence of the beautiful place of prayer. The timein the chapel concluded with the children singing “Seek Ye First the Kingdomof God”, which soon became the theme of “Abbey Days”.

MINSTER ABBEY BENEDICTINE NUNS WELCOME VILLAGESCHOOL FOR “ABBEY DAYS”

Cont’d… Sue Jezzard of Minster school used this theme with the childrento create a magnificent banner which expresses very creatively, the links offriendship between the children of Minster and the community of MinsterAbbey. It is now hanging near the entrance in Parkminster Grange, to remindall the visitors of these important links. (See centre pages for photos of this.)

Mother Nikola took each of the little groups of children on a tour of theAbbey. They visited the beautiful crypt, the oldest part of the monastery. They examined the shapes and textures of the ancient Saxon stones, the depthsof the walls, the large Norman windows and Tudor doors, and various otherinteresting aspects of the structure of the buildings. She explained to thechildren how the events of the Anglo Saxon period and the later NormanConquest had such a significant effect on the architecture of the Abbeybuildings, the life of the community and ultimately the history of the villageof Minster.

The children had fun discovering about monastic life in the 21st century.Various displays of the work, prayer and life in the monastery were availablefor the children to explore. Some more adventurous volunteers dressed upas St. Mildred, St. Domneva and even St. Theodore of Canterbury. Therewere roars of laughter when our “Time travellers” moved from the 7th centuryto the 21st century! The children enthusiastically exchanged ideas about howlife was so different in those early days of St. Mildred. There were no potnoodles or Mars bars!

The sisters reported “It was good to welcome the children of our villageas part of our 75th Jubilee celebrations. The last time so many children cameto visit us was for the celebration of our Golden Jubilee in 1987 when thechildren put on a little play about the early foundation of the Abbey. We stillhave the banner made by many of the mothers of the children, and this wasdisplayed recently. We are aware of just how important it is to pass on therich history of the Abbey to the young people of our village.”

Please see centre pages for photos of this experience.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPELTWINNING ASSOCIATION

Carol is helping out again this month with her reportof the ATC barbecue, to which the Association waskindly invited:-

We had a lovely evening with our hosts from the ATCThanet.

On arrival, we were ushered to a table for six at thefront of the spacious hall and enjoyed a hot brew of teaand coffee whilst salivating on the delicious aroma offrying onions, sausages and beefburgers wafting in fromthe outside. A Power Point display and background musicwas playing and then we heard the ever popular cry of‘BBQ’s ready’ rattling round the hall.

The cadets were kind and allowed us to take ourpositions at the front of the queue to satisfy ourever-increasing hunger. (Well to be honest, they weretold to wait until all the guests had been served). Hotfood eaten, then the cakes appeared. (What happenedto the diet I wonder) and tea and coffee was flowing allevening.

We had a little chat with Flt.Lt Kealy, who welcomedus warmly and expressed his wishes to return toArmbouts-Cappel. The cadets portrayed a marvellouspresentation of various trips they had been on over thelast year, including the Giant’s Day at Armbouts-Cappeland Jack, too old at 20 to remain in the cadets and nowa Band Leader (I think that was his title) promised theTwinning Association a CD of the photos he had takenin order that some of the chosen few pics can be addedto the web site. Thank you Jack.

All presentations were completed and now themoment we were anxiously awaiting! A display from theband. This was truly wonderful as the band went throughtheir musical routine with precision and perfection. Thisended on a high note as the lads and lassies werechoreographed to dance in the finale to the clapping andwhistling of the appreciative audience. And they saythat males can’t multifunction!!! Well they did on thisevening! - Dancing and playing at the same time aseffectively as the lasses, dare I add!!.

Well done all, including the caterers and a specialthanks to John Kealy for inviting us to this exciting andmemorable evening. C.Bubb.

Thanks to Carol for this, and a reminder to all thatour next meeting is on 20th September at the RBLClub.

A small group of members spent a very enjoyable evening having a meal andwatching greyhound racing at Sittingbourne, and three members helped cater forover two hundred members at a special EKFWI tea party held at Godinton Parkto celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Sunshine Club visited Whitstable Castle - a lovely outing for an afternoon;the Walking Group have explored the Sandwich Bay area and also walked fromDeal to Sandwich: and the monthly Games Evenings have continued as usual.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUBIn between the friendly matches played this month, members are playing

club competitions before the deadlines for the next round. This is also the time of the season when the tournaments are in full flow.

The Club did well in the Ramsgate one. Unfortunately our goldengirls (who are top in the Thanet League with five games to go)were out played, the one exception being Serena Townsendpartnered by Alan Razzell in the Mixed Pairs competition, whowon the plate.

In the Men’s pairs, at the quarter final stage, we had five pairswith two making the semi-finals. The final saw both the Minsterteams playing each other. Alan Razzell with Bernie Skudder lostto Brian Hedges and Glynne Hibbert. Alan Griffiths, NormanWilson and John Boldock were winners of the Triples.

Looking forward to the 27th September the Ladies will becelebrating the Club’s 75th anniversary with a friendly gamefollowed by a cream tea. Previous lady members who are not ableto bowl these days are welcome, please contact the Club if youare able to help with the catering.

MINSTER SHOWREFLECTIONS ON MINSTER SHOWEach year brings new challenges for Minster Show and this one was

no exception! The weather.Setting up on Friday in the marquee is a difficult job, it takes a dedicated team

to make the inside have perfect tables ready for the entries on Saturday morning. The ground was already soft and Matt Spanton very kindly tip toed the tractorand trailer in to minimize any damage. Ed Spanton supports us by lending tractor, trailer and storage space for the Show, otherwise there would be no tables forexhibits. Roy Bailey and Matt then passed the trestles and table tops down to theteam which included two 12 year olds — one of whom happened to be passingand, seeing the work required, offered to help. Step forward Charlie Hunt — ourown hero of the moment!

The following morning I was on the grounds at 6 am and it was sodden. Thereare a number of jobs that need doing and again a few are supported by about 6people to help it happen. When the first stall to arrive was the Fun Fair I had alittle sinking feeling; which was duly matched by the dent in the grass from thevehicle. Quick decisions followed and as a committee we tried to restrict thevehicle damage to the grass to make sure it had more time to dry out for the public— that's you- to be able to not have a mud bath by the marquee! Thank you, allof you who walked the extra bit carrying your many exhibits to the marquee. Weappreciated it and I think the grass did too. At any rate it was drier and less muddyby the afternoon. What I had not realised, stood on the gate directing traffic, wasthat there were so many new people entering categories for the first time. This isyour Show — thank you for making it what it was this year. Not only was themarquee full of vibrant colour, but also the Parade looked spectacular. I know Isee you all getting ready at Freeman's Road, but it always still impresses me whenyou come into the grounds en masse; yes I sprint down to see it!!

The afternoon seemed to be full of very happy smiling faces of all ages, Ihope it was the Show and not just that it was the first time we had all seen thesun for some weeks. I try to chat to you on the grounds, but I'm always sure someof you go home and think about what you liked and what you might change —please come and talk to us. That is what we have an AGM for — it is not anothercommittee meeting; it is your chance to tell all of us what you want to seehappen and discuss ideas. This year it is Friday 12th October at 7.30 in theNeighbourhood Centre.

We are a small number of people, and committees are not for everyone; butif you — like Charlie -think you can offer an hour or so of your time to help moveheavy tables then please come to the AGM and tell us. Some of us are getting tothe stage where it is plain hard work on the Friday, Saturday to change fromexhibits to Ceilidh and Sunday morning to reload the tractor.

The overall feedback has been really positive from what we have heard aroundthe Village; your contribution be it an entry, running a stall, dressing up for theParade or throwing an egg at your friend makes the Show what it is.

Thank you all. Dominique Vaughan (Chair)

SPECIAL THANKSSpecial thanks to Nik Mitchell for all the photos he took as our 'official'

photographer, at the show, and thanks also to Diane (Snappy) of Minster Mattersplus Becky and Lizzie all of whom added to the overall total of pictures nowavailable for viewing on the Show website (www.minstershow.org.uk).

Printed photo’s of both the cup and medal winners are now available fromAttwells, they're free !!, so if you were snapped either in the marquee or on therostrum in the main arena then there is a good chance a copy could be waitingfor you.

Your Letters…

Could this be Michael’s‘twin’ brother ?????????

Resurfacing RepercussionsI read the article on keeping gravel on drives, and it being a hazard if it got onto the path and eventually onto the road.

I would like to draw your attention at the deplorable way in which Monkton Road was RESURFACED RECENTLY.It was done in such haste, and with no forethought to the residents living in the road. The

chippings were laid in such haste, that I had to immediately brush them off the pavement, toenable people to walk along safely. Of course it didn’t matter if they walked into the homethat’s not the council’s concern. Traffic coming along did not slow down, which also causedthe chippings to be thrown up onto the pavement.

In all, to my mind it was a quick, cheap exercise on the council’s part in repairing theroad surface. So the gravel on the drives pales into insignificance to what the council purportedto be resurfacing of Monkton Road.

Truly shoddy workmanship. (Rosemary Ball)

Gwen and Robert Heath would like to extend their sincere thanks to… EstherJenner for all her wonderful help and support during Robert’s recent setback.

“Your help is really appreciated and we cannot thank you enough”

MINSTER KNIT AND TALK GROUPThe knitting group are making warm garments, gloves, scarves, hatsetc., to form a Christmas tree that will be displayed in the library window. This will then be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to thehomeless and needy.Should anyone in the village wish to knit any of these items to help fillthe tree then they can be left at the library.Donations of yarn or contributions towards its cost can also be left withthe librarians.

COME SLIM WITH ME Who wouldn't want to lose

weight whilst eating the foods theylove? Think big bowls of pasta androast dinners, fish and chips or acurry! These are the reasons that JoHollands joined her local SlimmingWorld Group and lost over 2.5stone.

Jo explained "At SlimmingWorld you food optimise, it's verysimple. You fill up on deliciousfilling foods and have the flexibilityof still enjoying a glass of wine or

something sweet. Gone are my days of calorie counting every morsel of food, depriving myself of my favourite foods.”

Jo is a self-confessed foodie who has always loved cooking for friendsand family. However, she says "I do not remember ever being at a weight Iwas happy with. I tried so many diets, but I was so miserable as I spent mostof my time hungry and craving the foods I loved and thought I couldn't have.I believed that being a foodie meant I would never be the weight I wanted tobe.”

After having her first child Jo found she just couldn't shed the pounds. ”Igave up cooking, I felt food was my enemy! I tried to lose weight, but itwouldn’t go. So I found a local Slimming World group and dragged myselfthere. My first week I lost 10lb, it was the boost I needed and gave meconfidence in the plan. I was no longer grumpy and hungry, and my love offood and cooking was restored." Jo now cooks again for friends and familybut using food optimising. She says they never realise that the food is part ofa healthy eating plan as everything is delicious!

“Food Optimising is extremely flexible. Even if you don't love cooking,Slimming World has plenty of quick fix ideas and recipes to help you, all usingfresh and tasty ingredients that won't blow the budget! As a Mum, I know youdon't have time to spend hours in the kitchen preparing food. Being able toprepare a meal in 15 mins is often essential. “

Jo is so passionate about Slimming World she has trained to be aconsultant. She told us "I am so excited about becoming a Consultant. I can’twait to help and motivate members whilst proving together that you can eatand lose weight!"Jo is taking over the Birchington Group which meets every Wednesdayat Kearns Hall Minnis Bay at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. She is also launchinga new day time group in Birchington on 12th September at ChurchHouse, (Kent Gardens) Wednesdays at 9.30am. If you have a four-year-old starting school this autumn, are yousure all their vaccinations are up-to-date?

Hundreds of children in Kent and Medway miss out on thesecond jab to protect them against measles, mumps and rubella(MMR).

Now NHS Kent and Medway is reminding parents to check thatchildren, especially those starting school this autumn, are fullyvaccinated.

Dr Faiza Khan, Consultant in Public Health for NHS Kent andMedway, said: “Take-up rates for MMR immunisation in Kent andMedway are higher than the national average but we would likeeven more children to be protected.

"While between 93.1 and 95.6 per cent of children have theirfirst MMR dose by the time they are two, the rate for the secondMMR jab, given before the fifth birthday, is between 88.9 and 91.5per cent.

"This is better than the England average of 86.9 per cent but stillmeans around 1,200 children in Kent and 350 in Medway miss outon their second MMR vaccination each year.

"It may be that parents are busy and forget about this vaccinationor that they do not realise how important it is.

"Both doses of the vaccination are needed to give childrenmaximum protection against these serious diseases, and reduce therisk of outbreaks.

"Parents will be thinking about everything they need to do tomake sure their four-year-olds are ready for that important first dayat school. As part of that, we would urge them to ensure they havehad all their vaccinations.”

The first MMR immunisation is given within one month of thechild’s first birthday. The second dose should be given between

the ages of three years and four months and five years, or before thechild starts school.

Parents of children whose MMR vaccinations are not up-to-dateshould make an appointment at their GP surgery.

Even if your child has missed a vaccination, or is older than therecommended age, it is not too late to be immunised.

For more information, please speak to your GP practice or healthvisiting team.

More support for dementia patients and their familiesNHS Kent along with Medway and Kent County Council have

commissioned a number of voluntary organisations to provide Dementia Cafesand Peer Support Groups across the county. It is estimated that over 22,000people in Kent and Medway have dementia and this figure is expected to morethan double in the next 30 years.

Dementia Cafes are informal meeting places where people with dementiaand their families can receive practical information, as well as emotional andsocial support. They aim to help those affected by dementia feel part of thecommunity and to talk to others facing similar issues on a daily basis.

Peer Support Groups are small meetings which consists of patients whohave recently been diagnosed with dementia and wish to support and shareexperiences with each other. Support groups aim to help people come toterms with their diagnosis by sharing how they feel with other patients. Thegroups bring people together so they are not coping alone. They also givevaluable information and explain how to access the support they might need.

We are planning on investing £600,000 to expand our range of servicesin the community so people with dementia can remain independent for as longas possible. This new investment, which will ensure that these services willnow be available in all 12 districts of Kent, is part of our commitment tohelping patients living with dementia to live well. We also plan to invest£3.5m by April 2014 in improving mental health hospital facilities. To helppeople find out more about symptoms and local services, Kent and Medwayhave a dedicated dementia website, please visit:-

MINSTER PLAYHOUSELatest Production

Directed by David Downes-PowellTHE PLAY - Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”

Noel Coward was this country’s most prolific and popularplaywright and actor of the forties and fifties, and Blithe Spirit is one of hisbest-known and best-loved plays. It regularly re-appears on the London stage, thelast time two years ago. The story is a love triangle - but with a difference!

In this play, one of the triangle’s sides is a ghost, the shade of CharlesCondomine’s dead wife, Elvira. Charles is a writer, married for the second time, and is about to start a book about a fake medium who is to be a complete charlatan. He invites a local psychic to his house to give a séance, hoping to learn the “tricksof the trade” and the jargon. However the séance goes badly wrong for Charleswhen it brings his dead wife back to haunt him, and she decides to capture him toherself forever.

As you might expect there is a twist in the tale, which leads to an exciting finaleas the ghosts set out to destroy the house, as the final curtain falls. Blithe Spiritcombines dry humour and spooky surprises as the play progresses.

Minster Playhouse’s reputation for exceptional plays and really special effectswill be showcased in this production which combines the acting talents of itslong-serving players along with a beautiful and talented newcomer playing Elvira.

For this production only, the Playhouse will be employing a highly experi-enced medium backstage and using real ghosts for the special effects! You don’tbelieve us?

Come and see for yourself!

Dear Sir or Madam,Changes to Council Tax may affect local

residents….please share your views with usI am writing to all parish and town councils to inform you

that from April 2013 there will be some major changes to CouncilTax and Council Tax benefit that may affect local residents. TheCouncil is carrying out a consultation about the proposedchanges and we would like to hear your view.

The government has said that support for Council Tax willbe localised from April 2013. This means that Thanet DistrictCouncil needs to design and operate its own Council Tax Supportscheme and that Council Tax Benefit in its current form will nolonger exist from 1st April 2013.

The amount of financial grant the Council will receive fromthe government to fund a new scheme will be approximately10-15% less than it currently receives; this means that theCouncil needs to consider how to reduce the level of help it givesto residents on low income.

The government has also announced that local authorities areable to make changes to Council Tax from April 2013. Fromthis date we are able to change discounts and exemptions givento certain properties for Council Tax purposes. These changesmainly affect empty properties and “second homes”.

The Council is asking for views on the proposed changes, theconsultation period runs until 17th September 2012. You cango online at www.thanet.gov.uk/counciltaxchanges to find outmore about the changes, view the proposal and the EqualityImpact Assessment in full or to participate in the consultation.

Paper copies of the consultation can be requested from thecentral information line on 01227 862310 between 9am and 5pm.This information line has been set up as a partnership betweenCanterbury City Council, Dover District Council and ThanetDistrict Council.

Yours faithfullyDr Sue McGonigalChief Executive, Thanet District Council

Important changes to Council Tax - Your chance to have your say before it changes

Dear Thanet residentMathew Munson, Front of House Co-ordinator, East Kent

Services has asked that the following information be circulatedas widely as possible.

On 23 July, East Kent Councils (Canterbury, Dover & Thanet)launched the official public consultation on their proposed localCouncil Tax Support scheme, to replace Council Tax Benefit(which the government are abolishing). The new scheme mustbe in place by 1 April 2013.

Its brief was to design a local scheme to cater for a significantdrop in government funding, whilst ensuring that pensioners’benefits are fully protected; as legislation will prescribe this.Below are the links to the individual consultations, which outlinethe proposals.

The links are:www.dover.gov.uk/counciltaxchangeswww.canterbury.gov.uk/counciltaxchangeswww.thanet.gov.uk/counciltaxchangesThe consultation will run from Monday, 23 July until Monday,

17 September 2012.Should you have any queries, a central 'information line' has

been set up, which will deal with requests for paper copies of theforms/questionnaire and respond to enquiries about what is being

proposed. The number is (01227) 862310 and this will be open9am to 5pm weekdays for the duration of the consultation period.

Matthew hopes that as many people as possible across EastKent will give their views through the consultation documents,as it's an important discussion being held locally; he is more thanhappy to come to your organisations and present this as aten-minute 'slot' should you wish, to either clients or staff (or acombination of the two).

Matthew and Bev Hussey (Operations Manager for EKServices / Gateway) will be organising a mini Partner Forumlater in the year, to talk about the benefit changes across the boardand will email out with details of this in due course.
