Nash said he hopes many of the volunteer mentors will also be immigrants who can relate to the newcomer teens.
“The young people we are working with . . . report low self-esteem, they are not achieving like other youth are achieving things that are valued here.”
“The traditional (one-on-one) mentoring approach does work, but with the specific population we are looking at, and the barriers, the outcome is usually isolation,” said Nash.

For more than two years, he struggled in school.
They figured he had a learning disability.
What else could be wrong with the teen from London’s Karen community? His peers from the refugee camp in Southeast Asia had long been clunking through sentences in English. Why couldn’t he tackle the basics?
Turned out, the teen had an ear infection -- couldn’t hear his ESL instruction, much less repeat the words.

His situation is special, but he’s not alone in London where thousands of young people must overcome challenges most Canadian-born kids can’t imagine.
London’s Intercommunity Health Centre hopes to help alleviate some challenges facing immigrant youths in the city’s northeast, one of the country’s most culturally diverse districts, with a mentorship program starting up this fall.
“It’s a great idea,” said Sahadete Bela, 17, who arrived from Bosnia nine years ago. “There are a lot of problems around here, and different people have different needs. For a lot of kids who come here, yeah it’s freedom, but it’s nothing like where you came from.”
Bela is doing well. She picked up the language quickly, she’s thriving at school, and this summer she has a cool job in a dance troupe operated by Youth Opportunities Unlimited.
Still, she was late for the interview to talk about life as an immigrant teen in London because she got held up translating for her parents. “They know no English,” she says. “They tried when we first got here, but it was hard for them and now we try to teach them. But mostly they need one of us -- my brother or sister or me -- with them.
”Bela is OK with it, but the role reversal is a challenge facing so many immigrant youth, said Youth Outreach Workers Aparna Kajenthira and Shand Licorish.
“It’s true that the squeaky wheel gets the oil,” said Licorish, who has been reaching out to youths in northeast London, helping them access services, jobs and recreation for nearly four years. “So things that wouldn’t happen to the average white middle-class Canadian kid because their parents are able to advocate for them are happening to these kids.”
Kajenthira agreed, adding many of the youths the outreach workers see “have to settle themselves, and their parents can’t necessarily advocate for them, and sometimes they are falling through the cracks.”
Within three years, the Mentorship Program for London Ethnic Youth At Risk aims to help at least 80 kids between 9 and 15 years old and their families, said Greg Nash, youth services co-ordinator at the health centre. (More specific information at the end- inverted pyramid)
The program is focused on the city’s northeast, where about 9,000 people -- nearly 20% -- aged 10 to 21 identified themselves as ethno-racial or newcomers in a survey by the health centre. Many of the teens reported feeling alienated in Canada.
Much of the mentoring will be in groups of 10 to 12 youths, gathering with mentors for talks and social outings.
