4. LMLIP Central Council Update –

Mohamed updated the group on the Central Council:

Council met on November 17, 2014;

Presentation by the Reseau de soutien (Francophone Immigration Network). The Network focuses on supporting the francophone immigrants in Ontario. They have completed a strategic plan and are focused on increasing the number of French immigrants to Canada, improving the capacity of Francophones in communities and highlighting the benefits of Francophone diversity. They look for opportunities for collaboration with Local Immigration Partnerships in Ontario;

Information from the Alberta and Ontario Summits were shared by Vicki Esses and Wilma de Rond;

Media Engagement Work Group: It was reported that Ontario Trillium

Foundation awarded the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board the funds to lead the We Are London season two. Sub-councils will provide content

The Governance Work Group is reviewing the Terms of Reference and the Co-Chair’s position

5. Updates from Working Groups:

a. Engaging Landlord & Tenants

Following up from the last Settlement meeting, an application was submitted to the Director of Housing, City of London. Thanks to Jill who followed up and the funding was granted to organize an engagement event with the two stakeholders: the landlords and the immigrants. The group has tentatively booked February 26 to hold the event. Huda Hussein noted that Networking for an Inclusive Community (NIC) is holding an event on housing in February and noted that this Work Group may connect with NIC to maximize resources and avoid duplication

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) – Huda Hussein

Huda reported that the Collaborative continues to deliver workshops. Four workshops have been delivered between December and January 8, 2015. It was noted that based on the need of students at one language learning site, a pharmacist presented on “Over the Counter Medication” which was well received by the language learners.

c. Settlement Brochure Review Work Group- Sheila Foster

Sheila Foster provided her report by email to Huda. Sheila noted that the brochures are completed in French and the correction was made on the previous brochure to include Beacock Library on the map. Work on this is now completed.

Group recommended sending these brochures to Pearson International Airport.

6. New Business:

LMLIP Day of Learning – Huda Hussein

Agenda and link to register for the Day of Learning will be sent out this week

Agenda includes learning about the 2014 Provincial Summits; basic immigration; demographics in London and the Labour Market in London and Middlesex; CIC Policies. Agenda also includes celebrating the work done by the Central Council and the six Sub-councils in collaboration with the community

Members are encouraged to register

Housing Video:

The Video on Housing was shown. Great work done by volunteers, including the videographer. It was noted that volunteers need to be recognized by sending them a certificate of appreciation. 7. Chairperson’s Closing Summary and Review of Action Items

Mohamed thanked members for their active participation. He encouraged them to register for the Day of Learning and asked members to mark their calendars for the Feb 26 Forum. It was noted that the date of the next meeting had been moved to March 25

Mohamed Al-Adeimi welcomed the group and guests, Louise Stevens, Director of Housing Division, City of London and Nancy Finnerty, Settlement Worker, Cross Cultural Learner Centre, to the meeting.

4. LMLIP Central Council Update – Mohamed Al-Adeimi

Mohamed reported the following highlights from the Central Council on February 23, 2015:

Dev Sainani, a member-at-large from Council has been selected as the new Co-chair; City of London will continue to be one of the LMLIP Co-chairs; United Way will continue to have a seat as an ex-officio member;

Feedback on the LMLIP Day of Learning was very positive; and suggestions for similar days were recommended;

Housing video was shown and it was well received, and

Taping of the second season of We Are London Show started; the Settlement Sub-council’s theme will be housing

5. Updates from Working Groups:

a. Engaging Landlord & Tenants

Mohamed reported that the group along with students from the Community Engaged Learning (CEL) program at Western met twice to plan for the April 28 Forum. A poster for the event is underway, thanks to Kristen who started the draft. Following feedback, the poster for the event was finalized by the Information and Orientation Facilitator, South London Neighbourhood Resource Services. It was suggested to include the logo of the volunteer videographer on the poster to further acknowledge his work. Mohamed noted that Council has agreed to give the videographer a certificate of appreciation. The agenda for the day will include two panel discussions, one with landlords and the other with newcomers; Louise Stevens will be on one of the panels; London Public Library has kindly provided the venue for the event. Amani requested that members start recruiting for the event and if they know of immigrants who could share their stories on the panel. Group discussed inviting Nepalese/Bhutanese communities to attend the session. An interpreter will be provided for this demographic. With regard to immigrants who speak French, ACFO may provide volunteer interpreters if needed.

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) – Huda Hussein

Huda Hussein provided a brief summary on the Collaborative for the guests. Services on this table continue to provide workshops as identified by the lead instructors at the different Language Learning cites; the London Police Service has joined the Collaborative.

6. Presentation by Louise Stevens, Director, Housing Division, City of London

Some highlights:

Affordable housing is different from social housing

Affordable housing is funded by the province, federal and municipalities

The City has taken a number of initiatives to reduce and/or eliminate homelessness, dependency on shelters etc

Questions discussed:

- A townhouse for a mother and one child may be a waste of space, when they can be accommodated in a two bedroom apartment. Louise noted that this goes with the City’s laws; there are no two bedroom apartments with the City of London

- A question on the program that assists low-income individuals to buy their homes, Louise noted that every year the City of London posts information on eligibility and how to apply for buying affordable housing is posted on the City’s website.

Mohamed thanked Louise for her presentation and for her offering to share the invite on the April 28 forum with the landlords that the City have business with. He thanked the group and encouraged them to share the information on the Forum once the poster becomes available.

4. LMLIP Central Council Update – Mohamed Al-Adeimi

Mohamed reported the following highlights from the March 30 Central Council meeting:

The taping of new shows was shared. Suggestions are requested for new themes. Settlement suggested two themes – landlord/tenant engagement and highlighting the library settlement program (LSP). Dates are set for airing episodes. Funding has been obtained for the show for two years. A French episode is planned;

Two members-at-large have been approved by the Central Council, and

Rita van Meyel presented on an RBC project under way at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) aiming at producing better mental health outcomes for the immigrant and refugee population within London.

5. Updates from Working Groups:

a. Engaging Landlord & Tenants

Mohamed reported:

Flyers and posters for the event at the Central Library on April 28, were being distributed;

Matt Brown, Mayor of London, would be the keynote speaker;

Two panels were planned, one comprising of landlords and the other with tenants, and

Service providers were invited and requested to forward the invitation to their clients.

Amani added:

A representative from ACFO would participate in the panel for new immigrants;

45 have registered so far, and

The media, including multicultural news providers, would be contacted a week before the forum

Members of the Working Group were asked to promote the event and share with their clients as appropriate Mohamed further noted that Louise Stevens would email landlords since they were potential participants.

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) – Huda Hussein

Huda mentioned that the group would be meeting on April 20. A presentation on “Food safety and you” was scheduled at the Hensim Centre on April 16 and other presentations including a number of workshops by Children’s Aid Society (CAS) would be conducted at the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC). She also explained that instructors at the five LINC centres would be contacted to set a schedule for the 2015-2016 academic year.

6. 2013-2016 Strategic Plan – Implementation Plan - Discussion

Mohamed mentioned that the Sub-council needs to set priorities for 2015-2016. Highlights:

In terms of engaging national and international students, this group will continue coordinating with the MER Program the annual “Journeys of migration 2015” session.

The objective of engaging landlords and tenants has also been achieved by developing a DVD and holding the forum on April 28. Next steps may be discussed after the April 28 Event

The Family Settlement Collaborative is an ongoing project which continues to inform and expand its reach to LINC, ESL classes and public and Catholic schools.

Will explore organizing a “Tour of London Day” for newcomers to the City in collaboration with community partners

It was noted that 6,500 copies of the edited brochures in English and French along with the QR Cards have been sent to Pearson International Airport.

Mohamed thanked the group and encouraged them to promote the Forum on April 28. He also encouraged them to get feedback from immigrants for the next Sub-council meeting. This will help find a niche that could be explored to help them.

4. LMLIP Central Council Update – Rifat Hussain and Mohamed Al-Adeimi

The Central Council met twice, on May 25 and June 22, since the last Settlement Sub-council meeting. Following are the highlights:

Katy Boychuk, Intercultural Education Specialist at the London Cross Cultural Learner Centre presented on Intercultural Competency Training.

The tenth episode of ‘We are London’ was recorded. Two more will be recorded in the Fall. The episode on the Landlord Tenant Forum is being telecast in June. Reruns will be broadcast in summer with fresh content to be aired again in the Fall.

The Governance Task Group is meeting monthly to discuss and draft the Strategic Plan for 2016-2019. The Theory of Change model, which works well with the Local Immigration Partnership’s Logic Model, is being used to formulate the strategy.

The Pathways to Prosperity (P2P) Conference will be held at the Delta Hotel in Toronto from November 30 to December 1.

Melanie Elms and Dr. Beth Mitchell, members of the Health and Well Being Sub-council, presented a position paper on behalf of the Sub-council’s Accessibility to Interpretation Working Group. The paper, endorsed by Central

London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership

Council, highlights the difficulties of obtaining interpretation services for immigrants.

5. Updates from Working Groups:

a. Review of Forum: Engaging Landlord & Tenants – April 28, 2015

Mohamed Al-Adeimi noted that the feedback received was very positive and suggestions for organizing such forums were offered. In response to questions about the objective of the forum, Mohamed noted that the aim of the event was to open up communication and engage the two parties, not necessarily solve issues immediately. Lana Winchester-Tucker suggested including a representative from the Social Justice Forum at the next event.

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) - Maria D’Souza

Maria D’Souza reported that the group met on June 15. Presentations scheduled from September 2014 to June 2015 to Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) sites have been completed successfully.

6. 2013-2016 Strategic Plan – Implementation Plan - Discussion

The following priorities were put forward for the Sub-council for 2015-2016:

Coordinating with the Migration and Ethnic Relations (MER) Program’s annual “Journeys of Migration 2015” will be discussed in September. The event will be held in November.

The Family Settlement Collaborative is an ongoing project which continues to inform and expand its reach to LINC, ESL classes and public and Catholic schools.

Explore an action item from last month for with regard to holding a “Tour of London Day” for newcomers.

7. Information sharing

Canada Day – Mohamed Al-Adeimi

The South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre (SLNRC) is hosting the annual Canada Day celebration.

This year’s celebration coincides with the inauguration of the new centre by the Mayor. A new building now houses the settlement service offices, LINC classes and social services staff offices.

A citizenship ceremony will also be held on July 1.

Settlement Services Map – Lana Winchester-Tucker

Lana noted that the Library Settlement Partnership link on the portal needs to be updated.

Medical Interpretation Course – Rifat Hussain

Rifat mentioned that a two-week intensive medical interpretation training course is offered by London Cross Cultural Learner Centre (LCCLC).

4. LMLIP Central Council Update: Mohamed Al-Adeimi

No updates. At the last meeting, updates from Council’s June 23, 2015 meeting were given. Council will be meeting on September 28, 2015

5. 2016- 2019 Strategic Planning: Mohamed Al-Adeimi

Mohamed noted that LMLIP is in the process of drafting the 2016-2019 Strategic Plan. A note on save the date for October 21 2015 (12 -4:30) is out and members and the community are invited to provide their input. He further noted that part of the strategic planning is to discuss the following question today: What needs do you see on the horizon for newcomers and immigrants in London and Middlesex in the next three years?

The following ideas were generated:

Current settlement services will continue to be in need; Needs will differ based on those who are coming;

6. Updates from Working Groups: a. Engaging Landlords & Tenants – Amani Radhaa

The group will meet to discuss and plan for another session with landlords and officials on affordable housing

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) - Huda Hussein Huda reported that the group met on September 21; reviewed the schedules for LINC sites; workshops will be delivered starting October 2015; meeting with Village Green is scheduled for Wednesday September 30.

7. 2013-2016 Strategic Plan – Implementation Plan - Discussion

The Family Settlement Collaborative is an ongoing project which continues to inform and expand its reach to LINC, ESL classes and public and Catholic schools.

8. New Business

The Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Coordinator has invited LMLIP to attend a session on October 27, to present on LMLIP to provide an opportunity for students to work on projects. Huda reminded the group that close to 20 students worked with various Sub-councils including this Sub-council on specific projects in 2014-2015 school year. Group was also informed that agencies at the table may explore their participation with the CEL program.

9. Canada 150 Celebration – Presentation – Lia Karidas

Lia gave an overview of the project and the London chapter of the Canada 150 Celebration and encouraged the group to participate and think about activities and or projects that they would like to be part of in 2017.

Group suggested that Lia present to ethno-cultural groups to involve them in the 150 celebration.

1. Chair’s Opening Remarks Mohamed Al-Adeimi welcomed the group. He welcomed Kirsti Cheese as CYN Community Connector Coordinator for Family Centres.

2. Adoption of Previous Minutes

Motion to approve September 22, 2015 minutes was moved by Rifat Hussain, seconded by Lana Winchester-Tucker and approved.

3. Additions to Agenda

Mohamed - Journeys of migration event.

4. LMLIP Central Council Update – Mohamed Al-Adeimi

a. Presentation by Dharshi Lacey from Pillar Nonprofit Network on The Mayor’s Advisory Panel on poverty. Her focus is to obtain feedback to define and understand poverty and how London can effectively move forward. The deadline for completion is March 2016. Everyone is welcome to visit the City of London website and voice their opinion. The end goal is to have a strategic plan for the City to move forward.

b. Some of the highlights from October 21, 2015 - Coming to Canada is not “paradise’ - Immigrants need to be aware of services available. - Everyone was happy to see City staff at each table. - Flow of communication from the bottom to the top needs to be more fluid - Attraction and retention is a huge focus. Employers need to work harder to get immigrants. - Welcoming All Voices received a positive response - Cross system understanding is important. Face to face interaction is positive.

5. 2016- 2019 Strategic Planning, report back from focus activity (Mohamed):

c. Are we able to address all the immigrant groups? With regards to Express Entry,

needs are changed. We need to enhance the communication of settlement services and engage the City of London.

The settlement committee came up with three priorities:

1. Affordable and safe housing. Continue raising awareness with rights and responsibilities.

2. Raising awareness at neighbourhood level 3. Enhance settlement services funded by government

The group worked on identifying the gaps and needs for the Settlement Sub council priorities with information collated from October 21. Also, used ideas from September 22 meeting.

Next Steps: The Project team will collate the ideas and come up with common themes. Some already identified:

-Coordination -Communication and access to information -Support for immigrants - Welcoming communities

Template will be sent out by December to review. Vivette will email copy out in case members want to add and change.

6. Updates from Working Groups:

a. Engaging Landlords & Tenants – Tabled in the absence of Amani Radhaa

b. Family Settlement Collaborative (FSC) - Huda Hussein This initiative is going well, services are going to LINC classes providing the services they needed. Flu shot information sessions were held at two different sites and four sessions were delivered at two sites

c. Community Engagement Learning Project – Huda Hussein

Reminder: CEL students wanted to do projects with Sub-councils, have until November 14 to decide on any projects

d. Canada 150 Celebrations

Reminder: still have time as a Sub-council to think of ideas for the 2017 celebration. Please review September 22, 2015 minutes

7. Information Sharing

Journeys to Migration is being held on November 19. Members were encouraged to attend and invite anyone who was interested. The event is looking to invite people from different sectors (CYN, City of London etc) The theme is ‘Experience of the Refugees journey to Canada’.
