♦ The Spring Break trip went great, and we had quite a good turnout spread over the two weekends, despite not lining up with Easter. The weather was great, even though it ranged from 100 degree heat the first Friday to rain midweek and cool temps with sweatshirts and jackets the second weekend. The wind and lack of other duners during the week kept the dunes perfect, and the conditions were awesome for some very fast rides. We had many cars over 70 MPH on regular rides, and running down the drag strip or canal road a few cars got very close to 100! That’s some fun fast duning. I’m sure that those of you who attended have your own sto-ries to tell, and we look forward to hearing them in future newsletters.

♦ If you’re just not ready to be done for the summer yet, the Dumont trip is coming up on May 12-15. Jim and Walt will be arriving on Thursday night for a three day weekend of fun to wrap up the regular duning season, and the last chance to dune before Coral Pink.

Hello to all of my adoring fans! It’s Allie here again and I’m so excited to tell you all about my last trip out to the sand. Mommy and Daddy took me out to a different place this time, maybe cause they forgot where Glamis was, I don’t know. Mommy and me left work on Friday and then met Daddy at home. I fell asleep in the truck but when I woke up we were already there and my

bed was all made! Kinda like magic. Saturday was a beautiful day and it was warm outside and I got to play with my sand shovel and buckets and my bubbles. We had to go to dinner and say hi and bye to Mama Jeannie and eat grilled cheese and fries, I love fries, Mamma Jeannie brings me my very own fries. I also got to taste Mamma Jeannie’s pear cake she made and it was super yummy too. She gave Mommy some cow dish towels that were her mommy’s so we had to say thank you for those too. I got LOTS of cookies this trip. Linda wasn’t the only one who brought me cookies. I just smiled cute at Don and he went and got me peanut butter oreos. Sunday we were all just re-laxin in front of Jerry and Linda’s motorhome and Janice brought out a squirt bottle and I got to use it on people and they liked it! I got to shoot people and didn’t even get in trouble for it. I got to show off my tutu to everyone too. I

love playing dress up and wearing my tutus. While Mommy helped Aunt B with some homework Grandma Anna pulled me around in my wagon and I was so tired I just fell asleep. I took my whole nap in my wagon! Monday morning there was an earthquake in the trailer cause the wind was blowing outside. Mommy wouldn’t let me go out to play because she thought I was gonna blow away. Daddy for-got to go for a dune buggy ride and we went into Yuma because it’s soo cool according to Daddy. We did some good shopping and stuff. I picked out some fabric with fish on it and I think Mommy’s gonna make me a dress or something. We went to the Cracker Barrel for lunch and saw Grandma Anna, Grandpa John, and one of Grandma Anna’s cousins. I don’t know why they call it the Cracker Barrel cause I didn’t see any barrels or crackers but my chicken and fries were really yummy and I got to be special and sit on Mommy’s lap to eat my lunch. Daddy remembered that he forgot to drive the buggy in the morning so we had to go back to camp so he could go on a ride. It’s important to drive your buggy everyday, kinda just like walking a puppy, otherwise they could get destructive or lonely I think. We drove back into Yuma for dinner and we ate at Texas Roadhouse and I got to sit at the head of the table because I’m the most important of course. Then we took Grandpa Jim and showed him Target. I think he liked it and he bought me an-other bubble gun cause I love bubbles soo much. Tuesday before we went home I got to play with Daddy’s rc truck and I pushed it to make it go and then watched it do flips and stuff. Then he got out my rc truck and he drove it for me. I tried to tell Daddy that he forgot to hook up the trailer but he didn’t understand. I know a lot of words but there are still communication problems with my parents that I’m working on. Friday I told Mommy we need to leave work early so we could go

The Rooster back to the dunes and pick up the trailer and not forget to bring my toys home. So we met Daddy at home and then drove to Rally’s for dinner and then we went to get the trailer. Saturday I got a present from Chuck and Janece, it was a cute little bunny in a bag. It’s a good thing I got a bag cause then I had a place to put all of my eggs that Jerry and Linda gave me special and also the ones Grandpa John helped me find that the Easter Bunny put out on the cars for everyone. The Easter Bunny gave out lots of cool stuff, like coins, a Rhino, and a red blinky light, candy bars, lotto tickets, monies, coins, spray cleaners, flash lights and lots of candy. I especially like chocolate. I really like chocolate. Af-ter the adults hunted for eggs, they went for another dune buggy ride. I got to drive the dune buggy around camp more this trip, and I really need to talk to Daddy about mak-

ing it so I can go for a longer ride. I want to see what everybody goes and does, and why they come back so sandy. I’ve heard it has something to do with Walt’s paddle tires, but that just seems silly. After the ride we had dinner in camp and I got to go to the campfire and say hi to my friends. I know lots of names now, and I said hello to “Walp”, “Sock,” “Shirey,” “Lida,” and of course “Granpa” and “Granpa.” How silly is that, I have two Grandpas, and they both were sitting at the fire? It gave me a chance to practice my counting. After cooking marshmallow chickens on sticks in the fire I decided it was time for bed. I went in the trailer and fell asleep. Daddy and my grandpas went for a dune buggy ride, but I didn’t even

get to stay up to see the lights. Oh well, next time I’ll be older and can stay up late like all the adults in camp. The next day I played in the sand some more with Shirley, and I carried all of my buckets over to show her. I told her to sit and she played with them very well. Then we packed up all of my toys in the trailer. I made sure Daddy didn’t forget to pack up this time. He had to put his toys away too, and I wanted to go for a dune buggy ride but it wouldn’t start. Daddy and Grandpa replaced the starter just so that I could go. Then once everything was packed, we hooked on to the trailer and followed Uncle Sock, Grandpa John, Brandy, and Grandpa Jim home. We saw Steve on the freeway, and then we didn’t have to worry about getting a ticket anymore, so we had a nice trip home. We stopped for burritos and French fries, and before I knew it we were home. I sure can’t wait to go to the dunes again, al-though Mommy and Daddy say we won’t be back at Glamis until the next season, and by then our dune buggy will have gotten bigger too. I guess they are like puppies, you take care of them and eventually they grow up. Until next time, keep your diaper sealed and your buggy well fed. –Allie

By Kris Schellinger Generally, when you think of Lake Havasu, you think of the stark contrast between the rocky desert hills, the dark green of the grasses growing next to the lake and the beautiful dark blue water. But, if you look away from the lake, and peer off into those rocky hills, you’re going to see some great offroading opportunities as Doug and I have been finding out. Back in January, when Doug and I drove out to Don and Shirley’s house to pick up our new jeep, we spent part of a day out playing around in the hills behind their house with the Rangers. We had a blast and definitely wanted more. We finally had a chance to go back at the end of March to play. We drove to Havasu on a Thursday night and joined Don, Shirley, Jerry and Linda for a great weekend. We started with dinner at the Mexican restaurant where we had a chance to catch up with everyone. As many of you know, there are not four more active people going than Don, Shirley, Jerry and Linda. Doug and I were preparing for a busy weekend.

Friday started with a quick trip to the Arizona MVD. Unlike California, this is not a horrendous chore that you dread for months. We were in and out of the MVD in less than 10 minutes with our jeep registered for 2 years for the measly cost of $26. We left with title and plate in hand. With business done, we were off to have fun. We met everyone back at the house and we got the Rangers ready to go. Don borrowed Larry’s ranger so we had room for everyone. Ron and Carol, neighbors of Jerry and Linda in Colorado who stay down by the bridge during the winter, drove their ranger up to the house so we had four vehicles on our first run. Off we went. It is such a kick to LEGALLY drive through the neighbor-hood and then up into the hills. The weather was

perfect for a day of offroading. There had been enough rain in Havasu for the hills to be green and the ocotillo trees were magnificent, all green with bright orange flowers. I haven’t counted but I bet I took 200 pictures just of the ocotillos. Ron is a great leader and we found some rather challenging trails.

We stayed out in the hills for about 5 hours when we headed back to the house to clean up for dinner. We en-joyed a meal at the Golden Corral and then went to a car show in down town Havasu. We got back home around 8:30pm. Saturday morning we got up early and hit the garage sales. This is not an activity that Don, Shirley, Linda and Jerry take lightly. This is serious business. The day before, both Shirley and Linda bought enclosed trailers for their side x sides. Don and Jerry had our route all planned out and with GPSs at the ready, we were off. Shirley

found another car seat for Tara, and Jerry found who knows what but we were assured they were worth having. I also found a spec-tacular treasure for an obscenely cheap price that I won’t talk about because Doug was not thrilled that he had to pay for it, needless to say, I’ve worn it several times and I love it!! Following Jerry in the dunes is easier than following him through the torn up streets of Ha-vasu. Don had to work hard to keep him in sight. After we hit all the sales, we packed up and went out into the hills again, this time with Don leading. Turns out he’s a heck of a leader. At one point we crossed Hwy 95 and went over to the Speedway to visit with Buick Bob. We drove around and around all afternoon. We had so much fun. At one point we paused to get a lesson on elec-tricity from Jerry (we were riding under the power lines). He said there was going to be a test but he took it easy on us and didn’t give us one. We had our picnic lunches out of the back of the Rangers and just thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. But, eventually, we needed to head back home to the showers because we were off and running again. We took the boat across the lake to Havasu Landing for an early din-

ner and a bit of gambling. After the boat ride back, Don took us on a tour of the island. The original plan was for us to go to the races that evening but, to be honest, we were all pooped out and ready for a quiet evening. Sunday found us at Rusty’s for breakfast and then over to the swap meet where Shirley and I decided that we would have had a lot more fun if Don and Doug had just left us their wallets and not actually been there with us (we still had fun with them though). When we were done at the swap meet Doug and I had to face the fact that we had to head home. We left the beautiful weather in Havasu to return home to gray, cloudy skies and we learned from this trip that we are too young to keep up with the retired folks. Along with the Club’s summer Havasu outing we should also plan a Club winter outing to Havasu now that we have so many side x sides in the group. -Kris

By now, we often just assume that most members and duners in general are familiar with the American Sand Associa-tion (ASA), but with the club’s upcoming donation to support this group that works to keep our dunes open, we thought it would be worth including some information about the ASA and what they are doing to keep the dunes open.

WHAT IS THE ASA? The ASA is the lead organization fighting to keep the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) open to OHV use. We are a nonprofit California corporation under the IRS Tax Code known as 501(c)(4). Leaders of the ASA are volunteers. The ASA has joined with the Off Road Business Association (ORBA), San Diego Off-Road Coalition (SDORC) and American Motorcycle Associaton (AMA District 37) to fund EcoLogic Partners Inc. Ecologic has filed lawsuits against the Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Wildlife Service and has standing in other lawsuits affecting the ISDRA. We stand poised to oppose any legal actions brought by any antiaccess groups that would prevent the new Recreation Area Management Plan from being implemented. This plan would remove some of the closures entirely and grant conditional access to others. In addition to our legal actions, we filed a precedent-setting delisting petition to remove the Peirson's Milk Vetch from the Endangered Species List. This plant was used to create the closures put in place in 2000. These closures total over 49,000 acres of sand dunes and are located south of Highway 78, south of Highway 8, and at Mammoth Wash. Our delisting petition's were based on good, solid science derived from biological studies paid for by the ASA, ORBA, and SDORC. However our petition's were not successful and other avenues are being planned to address the potential for delisting of the PMV. We have two lobbyists that we work with, one in Washington D.C. and the other in Sacramento. We have made several trips to Washington D.C. and Sacramento to present our case and plan to make several more. Our Public Safety and Education makes us known as a group that is not only interested in a World Class duning experience, but Stewards of the land and its resources. The ASA has received the US Dept. of Interior’s 4C's Award, recognizing our organiza-tion's commitment to working with the Bureau and others to enhance recreational conservation on public lands in Southern California.

RAFFLE CAR PRIMARY SOURCE OF ASA FUNDING

The ASA raffle car revenue is the ASA’s primary source of funding. Over the past 10 years the ASA has raised over $1,000,000 worth of revenue with 10 raffle cars that were totally donated by the car fabricator and several component suppliers. With the down turn in the economy, last year’s car only netted about $68,000 which was about $5,000 less than the year before. In comparison, the ASA’s first raffle car grossed $200,000 in 2000. The ASA is making some adjustments in the raffle car display program to enhance ticket sales. If you know of any opportunities available to display the car or have any ideas for ticket sales opportunities, please let us know. We could really use your help. Please consider selling some tickets to your fellow duners, friends and associates. Contact our office and we will send you 20 tickets to sell. COST SAVING MEASURES IMPLEMENTED ASA Reduces Printed Newsletters

In an effort to reduce costs and ensure the ASA has adequate funding in anticipation of the lawsuits that will be filed in conjunction with the BLM’s release of the Recreation Area Management Plan, the ASA board has decided to decrease the number of print d newsletters that will be sent to the membership. Four newsletters will be issued annually; however, only two of those newsletters will be in a printed format. This year, the printed newsletters will be this (February) edition and the September edition which kicks off the dune season. By reducing the number of printed newsletters, the ASA will save approximately $25,000 annually. Members will still have access to important information; you’ll just need to make sure that we have the most up-to-date contact information for you. If you find a pound sign (#) in front of your name on the mailing label of this newsletter, then the email address we have for you on record is no longer valid.
