The annual cub picnic was a lot of fun, despite only having about 35 members attending. We look for-ward to seeing more of you in the dunes.

It is October, so memberships are due for many of you. If you’re not sure when yours expires, check out the membership list on page 5.

The spook run at Salton Sea is Octo-ber 22-24, and Don and Shirley Ford will be going straight to

Glamis for the Halloween trip on the next weekend, so they will be spending an early week at the dunes.

Thanksgiving will be the first big trip of the year for many of us, and the Bacons, Fords, and Schellingers will be spending the week at the dunes which will allow members to arrive and set up the weekend before Thanksgiving and return as soon as they can get off work that week. It makes for easy back to back trips.

After Allison’s 1st birthday party on Sept. 19th, we had our Sand Season Kick-off Picnic. Jim, John, Scott and Barry manned all of the games, with many present joining in on the events for a opportu-nity to win extra raffle tickets. With the Games over, the club provided Pizza’s with a lot of pot-luck dishes available, Thanks to everyone that brought many delicious food. The raffle was going great, with prizes being won by many of the members that were present. We got $62.00 in the 50/50 with Linda Hagan wining that drawing. It was great to get together with everyone to start of the 2010-2011 sand season. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all in the dunes. -Walt

More Picnic Details From P.J. As Walt mentioned in the cover article, we had the annual club picnic once again at Shamel Park in Riverside. This year we had the picnic in the afternoon, following Allison’s birthday party in the park. We had the usual fan belt toss game, as well as last year’s addition of lawn bowling and this year’s new one, bouncing a golf ball off a table into a trash can. Having the opportunity to purchase additional chances at the games worked out well, and people seemed to enjoy competing for raffle tickets. Speaking of the raffle, we had lots of great prizes donated by club members and supporting businesses. Innovative Imports, the makers of the Safe Glow whips that many of us have donated $50 towards a $100 gift certificate, with the club paying for the other $50. John Cole was happy about that one, since he won it. Wright Gear box provided two $50 gift certificates, which Walt won after putting almost all of his tickets in for them. It seems he is waiting to get his Megasand back from Wright, and they will come in handy. Long time club sponsor KarTek provided two $50 gift certificates which Scott Cole and PJ won, and there’s always something there that we need. Car Craft in Riverside provided two $25 gift certificates, as well as some buggy tool bags and aluminum wall mounted trailer storage bins that were quite popular. Don and Shirley Ford provided a Easy Set Up Canopy that had a lot of tickets in its bucket too. Kris and Doug Schellinger picked up the Kar Tek stuff and also brought four gas cans that were a popular prize. Mike and Mona Bacon donated two awesome calendars and two batches of Mona’s famous Mona Roca treat, as well as two jars of homemade jam and peanut butter. The Beckers arranged for some tools, which are always nice to win. Finally Jim found some Sand Goggles at the sand show that are warranted forever by Smith, and we had two pairs in the raffle. There were other prizes as well, and the club would like to thank everyone who donated or arranged for prizes. For those of you who haven’t been to one of our recent (last 10 years or so) raffles, what we do is we sell tickets and then give people both halves of the ticket. Then each prize has its own coffee can for tickets, and you can choose which prizes you want to try for. It works out well, since the more popular prizes get more tickets and raise more money for the club, but the less popular prizes are easier to win, and there weren’t any bad prizes. If you feel like you missed out on the raffle fun, don’t worry because we forgot to bring Mama Jeanie’s pizza gift certificates to the Picnic, so we will be having a special raffle for them during the club Thanksgiving trip. For $1 a ticket you’ll be able to have a chance to win one of two large piz-zas the Jeannie donated. We’ll have the raffle on Thursday night, so you’ll have the certificate in time for dinner on Thanksgiving Saturday! The food at the picnic was great as always, with club members bringing a wide variety of snacks and sides. This year the club bought pizza from Pizza Hut, which Nancy Kastle went to pick up. This $75 was the club’s only food cost for the event, since people brought all the rest and we had leftover snacks from Allison’s party. Also splitting up the cost of the park worked well, and saved the club half of the park cost making it only $115 for the event. Another purpose of the picnic is to serve as a reminder to renew member-ships, and almost everyone who attended renewed their membership there, which earned them a free raffle ticket. For the rest of you, be sure to check out the membership list on page 5 to see when your memberships will come due.

The Rooster Hello all of my adoring fans, it’s me, Allison. I just wanted to write a quick note to thank all of you who came to my party and the picnic afterwards. It was sooo much fun. I got a new car and a book and a shopping basket, and a slide and boxes and crayons and so much stuff that I am a very busy baby trying to play with it all. I also got money for college, which is going to help because I want to go there in a couple of years. I really appreciate having the chance to see everybody right by my house. Usually I have to go for a long truck ride to see all of my desert friends, but this time you all came to me, and that’s really cool. Inland Empire’s other Trip of the Year While many members of the club were enjoying the dunes at Coral Pink, the Hagen’s and the Huggard's traveled north to explore Oregon, Washington and Vancouver BC. The trip started with the 2 rigs meeting up on the 210 freeway and running I-5 all the way to Lake Shasta. The lake was full and looked very inviting, too bad we did not bring our boats. We crossed the Oregon border and camped outside of Medford. We took the suburban and visited Crater Lake, it was beautiful. It’s the deepest lake in the US (1,940’) and has a dark blue color that contrasts against the snow and rock that form the rim. The Huggard's had been there before and decided to explore Medford. They stopped in at world famous “Harry and David’s” fruit basket store and then discovered a very unique rock shop. From Medford we traveled to the coast and Coos Bay. Along the way over the cascades we encountered lots of logging trucks hauling timber to the mills. The Hagen’s drove down to Gold Beach and experienced white water jet boat-ing on the famous Rogue River. Going upstream for 40 miles in a 1000hp, triple engine jet boat was loads of fun. We saw lots of wildlife along the way. Our pilot was a master

at spinning the boat in a 360 when you least expected it. The Huggard's explored the rugged coast line and visited a light house. From Coos Bay we traveled further up the coast to Waldport. That afternoon the Hagen’s went horseback riding on the beach. The wind was blowing very hard, and even though it was mid July we froze our butts off. The next day we all jumped in the suburban visited the famous “Sea Lion Caves”, checked out the dunes at Florence. They looked like fun with the beach on the 1 side, and dunes that stretched inland and encroached on the forest.

Kinda like Coral Pink only with cooler temps. (But flatter, wetter dunes... -ed) We had lunch at a 50’s style Hotrod diner that had a 54 Ford convertible inside the restaurant that you could eat in. We visited another beautiful lighthouse and really enjoyed the rocky

coastline. That evening we dined at the Adobe Restaurant which is set right on the rocks and watched waves crash and a pod of whales blowing out at sea. Another fan-tastic day. From there we traveled further up the coast highway to Netarts, near Tilla-mook. The guys went to check out the Tillamook Air Museum that is housed in the largest wooden structure in the world, an old blimp hangar from WWII. They had some nice exhibits. Then it was on to the Tillamook Cheese Factory. They convert 6 million gals of milk a week into a variety of cheeses and Ice Cream. They can pro-duce 167,000 lbs a day and ship 1 million lbs a week, that’s a lot of cheese!!! On our way back to the RV’s we drove to

Cape Meares State Park and viewed the coast one last time. From the Light House you could see 3 different rock arches out in the surf line. It was very beautiful. The next part of our trip took us inland to Port-land. After setting up camp we all headed for the Co-lumbia River Gorge via the old historic Hwy 30. It winds thru the forest and along the cliffs of the huge river gorge for 75 miles. After stopping at several look

out points we took a short hike to Bridal Veil Falls (no, not the one in Yosemite). It dropped about 60 feet and was hidden down a steep trail. Back in the car we passed several more waterfalls and finally arrived at “Multnomah Falls” The grand daddy of them all. It cascades down 550’ to a natural pool and then drops another 70’ for a total of 620’ before reaching the Columbia River. It was spectacular. Jer-emy wanted to hike to the top of the falls but it’s a switch back trail, 1 mile straight up, we are not youngsters anymore! The next day the Huggard’s took their jeep and visited the Spruce Goose at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum and were awed by the collection of planes and space vehicles. They also checked out a wild 3-D IMAX movie. The Hagen’s went and visited the Bonneville Dam and checked

out the fish ladders that allow the salmon and other species to swim upstream and past the dam. The view-ing area was underwater so you could see the big fish swim past you thru a window. We also saw a hatch-ery that had 3 captive 10’ sturgeons in a pond. They were the ugliest fish I’ve ever seen and date back to the dinosaurs. We had lunch along the river and then drove up to Mt Hood. The drive around the snow capped mountain was gorgeous, lots of fruit or-chards and wineries. The pine forests blanket the hillsides as far as you can see. The next day was a travel day further north to Seat-tle where we spent the next 3 days sightseeing. Our first tour was to take the ferry from Seattle to Victoria, Canada. It was a 3 hr ride across Puget Sound and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. It started off fun, but about half way there we encountered 6-8 swells. The ferry was a catamaran traveling about 30 mph. It was pounding the waves and trashing the passengers. Of the 80+ plus on board, about 50 of us experienced sea sickness. Dave and Cindy were smart and did not eat breakfast and stayed seated towards the back, for some crazy reason we opted to move forward and proceeded to fill several barf bags. I had flash backs of theme song from Gilligan’s Is-land (….a 3hr tour……………….) The Capt. had to reduce speed and after an hour things calmed down and we arrived in Victoria. Pete was still a little “green” and had to change his shirt and jacket, but the rest of our group survived pretty well. We boarded a tour bus to see Victoria. It’s an old city and the street are narrow, but this bus driver threaded thru traffic like it was a freeway. After a 30 min tour thru town, we headed for world famous “Butchart Gardens”. It is a botanical oasis, they even grow palm trees up there. Donated to the city by a wealthy family, it was originally their private 60 acre residence. The place was amazing. The array of plants, colors, shapes and various themed gardens were a sight worth the trip over. What a gift to the people of Victoria. From there we headed back to the city and walked around the harbor, checking out the “Empress Hotel”, city hall and enjoyed the very clean city. We boarded the ferry for the return trip, Pete was dreading the possible rough seas again, but was happy to find out the seas were flat calm. The ride was smooth and fast. It was a long day but very enjoyable. The next day we visited the Boeing Aircraft plant where they assemble the 747, 777 and new 787 Dreamliner, the first commercial passenger jet made from mostly composite material vs. aluminum. It was very interesting to see the scale of the work being done inside the largest factory building in the world under 1 roof. From there we all traveled down to Renton where we chartered a Sea Plane for a tour of Seattle and the surrounding areas. 4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and then stick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if you are waved on by the driver ahead of you.
