SOUTH DOWN NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

At the January South Down Council meeting elections were held for our Executive Com-mittee, I was lucky enough to be elected South Down President for 2020. This is a chal-lenge I am looking forward to. The good news is within our community we are surrounded by people who care passionately about South Down, our extended community and volunteering. Without all the members of our community who participate in this positive way South Down would not be the place we enjoy to-day.

Whilst many of you may not know me, I have been an owner in South Down since 2012, initially like many, a weekender and then from 2015 as a full time resident. I have been privileged to serve as a Director in Golf Vil-lage for the past 4 years and as their council representative for this my 2nd year, as well as being in my 3rd year as a member of the South Down Boat Club board, where I have been involved in the renovation project and working on the landscaping project. My goal for South Down is to help keep it a place we can all enjoy to call home, be that full time, or just the oc-casional weekend, where our families and friends enjoy visiting and spending time, and where we enjoy the company of our neighbors. There are many tasks in our stewardship of this great community including attention to our beach wall, replacing and repairing culverts, roads and other infrastructure, and so if you see something

that needs our attention please let us know either via the management company or directly. There are many opportunities to help in our community if you have time and would like to volunteer, or if there is a skill or passion you can offer our community please let us know how you can help. We understand many have busy lives with lots of other commitments, to those we welcome your friendship as you enjoy the community. For those of you who already volunteer you have our thanks for all you do for South Down and beyond. At this time of year many of the volunteer activities go unnoticed as many of us are away or

not visiting as frequently. This is a time when ‘Gil’ shines, our skating pond is a prized asset, many times after a snowfall I see him working on the ice, other times he is flooding the ice to create as near perfect skating condi-tions as possible. If you see ‘Gil ’ when using the facility be sure to say Thank You. You cannot fail to be im-pressed with his passion for the skating in our community. Stay safe on the ice, follow the rules and remember to wear your safety equipment, if it has been closed due to unfavorable weather conditions it is for your safety. I look forward to serving you as president, if you see me walking my dog Bailey, in the warmer weather riding my bicycle or enjoying our common areas with our new grandson and family, be sure to say hello. Bailey says “Thank you” to all our kind neighbors who take time to say hello with a stroke or especially with treats. I wake up everyday and am so thankful for where we live and I look forward to our keeping it special and where possible making it even better. LONG BAY NEWSLETTER Letter from the President

This is a very quiet time for Long Bay and the Long Bay Board, so there is not a lot of activity to report on but we do have two topics that will be of interest to our homeowners. Culverts Update We have signed a contract with Lyman Construction out of

Gilford, NH to manage the completion of our culvert work. This will be an early Spring pro-ject and ensure that we start the new season with this finally behind us.

WOW Trail As some have read in the Laconia Daily Sun, our new Mayor Andrew Hosmer, presented a new WOW Resolution at the City Council Meeting on Feb 10th. This Resolution was unanimously approved by the City Council and creates a Blue Ribbon Committee made up of representatives of the City, WOW Org, HOA’s (specifically including South Down and Long Bay, Paugus Park Associations), and the Hobo Railroad. The purpose of this Committee will be to de-termine parameters of a compromise solution that allows for the timely and cost-effective completion of the WOW Trail.

This is a significant change in direction to this polarizing subject that has dogged us over the past 10 years and more. For Long Bay it signals a change from a protective defense of our Association to a proactive partnership with the City in finding a solution that will work for all parties. The Committee is charged with coming up with this solution by this coming October. There will be more information available on this sub-ject in the coming weeks. Most Sincerely, Dick Bordwell President, LBHOA II

LONG BAY UPDATES

Long Bay Social Committee The full slate of Social Events will be published in the April/May edition, but we are already receiving requests for the date for the 4th of July events. We are happy to inform everyone of the following activities. 4th of July Fireworks – Saturday, June 27th Golf Cart Parade – Saturday, July 4th Judy Taylor Long Bay Social Committee Chairman Long Bay Tribute Many of you may have known Jonathan Guloyan who lived on Long Bay Drive. Jonathan was quite a character who loved socializing. He started out with a large boom when he first came to Long Bay, but his personality soon would win people over. While his time in our Association was short, his energy and involvement in our Volunteer Day events and his creativity were hard to ignore. When Long Bay decided it was time to update our Logo, Jonathan was a key contributor to a new logo that will stand the test of time. When Jonathan passed away suddenly 1.5 years ago, he left behind his wishes to help children in a matter dear to his heart. The Jonathan V. Guloyan Family Trust was proud to make the donation of $1,500,000 in Jonathan’s memory, to benefit the CHaD (the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth) in New Hampshire. The ChaD donation will be used exclusively for the purpose of helping Children in crisis and Children with mental health issues. A $1,000,000 bequest by Jonathan sparked the creation of the 501c3 Mental Health Collaborative located in Hopkinton Massachusetts. Other organizations benefiting by the Jonathan Family Trust were the Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction (anonymously) and Genesis Healthcare in Laconia. Jonathan’s Family Trust will continue to help Children, thru distributions, into the year 2023, when it is expected to dissolve.
