This course will provide an introduction to the Strengthening Families approach which centers on shifting the focus from risks

and deficits to strengths and resiliency thereby building the Protective Factors. Social connections and support systems for

families are very important in building the Protective Factors. One must first understand ways to help families establish social

connections and access concrete support in times of need. Building awareness on how social connections and concrete

March Into A Nutritious Healthy HabitWe have all heard at one time or another that we should start our day with a nutritious breakfast. Eating breakfast helps us perform better and provides energy to get through the morning. Here are a few ideas that are quick, easy and healthy. They just might work in those precious few minutes between waking up and opening the door to welcome the first child of the day!

Oatmeal: Oatmeal can be a healthy, filling breakfast. It is high in fiber and you can eat it alone or add nuts or fresh fruit for some variety each morning.

Yogurt: Yogurt is another fast choice that gives you calcium (our aging bones need) and protein. Just like with oatmeal, you can add fresh fruit to mix it up a bit.

Fruit: Fresh fruits are always a fast on the go food option that you can fit into any busy schedule. In addition, many fruits provide a healthy dose of vitamin C (oranges) or potassium (bananas).

Eating a healthy breakfast is a good start to each day, but we must not forget to make all our meals as nutritious as possible.

Dont know where to start? ChooseMyPlate.gov provides many resources for meal planning, recipes, and programs to help make healthy choices. In addition, this site contains a variety of activities that you can do with the children in your care!

Always remember that when starting any healthy habit to consult with your physician. With their blessing you can then March on to implement a well balanced plan for a healthier YOU!

Dont forget to register for the following new trainings coming

    in March and April:

    GrowingWithChildrenConference-Hosted by Child Start

    ExploringMathinPreschool-Tanya Bulluck

    UsingSensoryActivitiesintheClassroom-Heather Jaynes

    SocialConnections,MeetingConcreteNeedsinStrengtheningFamiliesEngagement-Paula Fernandez

Sneaking Healthy Habits into Childrens Routines:

Cuddle With Your Kids When Waking Them Up (This will help them wake up with less stress about the day)Spend five minutes listening to music (Singing allows the creative thinking that takes place during the night to gel and form into a plan of action)Make Carrot Cupcakes (All you have to do then, is create a cream-cheese frosting (lightly sweetened of course) and youve got a cupcake thats healthy and that kids cant resist.)Dip It (Children seem to accept healthy food easier if they can dip it.)Play Active Games (During cold weather, the board game Twister can be a good game to play indoors.)Go for a Walk (Weather permitting, take a walk while you play I Spy)

March is National Nutrition Month!Focus your attention this month on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical

    activity habits.
