The YMCA in Greenfield Heritage Club Board.

Y-HeritAGe clubAnyone can join; everyone can make a difference with a deferred gift to the Y.

In 1995, Rosamonde “Rose” Pydyck joined or Y’s Heritage Club simply by having her banker send us a letter stating that she had put the Y in her estate plans for an undetermined dollar amount. In September of 2007 Rose passed away at the age of 96 at the Buckley Health Center. In December of 2012, our YMCA received a check for $80,000 to be added to our endowment funds to generate annual earnings to supplement our Sliding Fee Scale - support we provide to over 2,000 people each year.

Rose was born in West Springfield on January 9, 1911,the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Girardeau) ledoux. She graduated fromWest SpringfieldHigh School in 1928.OnJune11,1934 shemarried John F. She was a charter member and past president and treasurer for AArp, former secretary for the Senior Craft Shop in Turners Falls, former secretary and treasurer for the GreenfieldSeniorClub, formerclerkandtreasurerfortheHighStreetCemetery and a member of the Guiding Star Grange of Greenfield. Shewasa communicantofHolyTrinityChurchandamemberoftheRosarySociety.RoseandJohnwereavidcampers and belonged to the Catamount Sportsman’s Club in Colrain. The hobbies rose loved to do the most were knitting and crocheting. She made hundreds of hats and mittens for young children, lap robes and exercise balls for seniors and donated everything she made to many organizations.

Thank you, rose, for planning ahead to help our YMCA provide programs for children, families and senior citizens forever more.

You do not have to be rich to join the Heritage club, if you own a home or have some savings,

leaving the Y a bequest can make a difference, i.e. $200,000 home x 5% = $10,000 gift to our Y!

For more info about the Heritage Club, please contact Bob Sunderland at 773-3646.

Your support makes a difference right in franklin county. At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. Your help and/or gift to the Y will have a meaningful, enduring impact in Franklin County.

If you would like to help make a few phone calls to your fellow Y-members seeking contributions for this most important campaign please give your name to the Welcome Center staff.

The Strong Kids & Families Annual Campaign provides the funds to support many of our youth programs and to make it possible so people of all income levels can take advantage of the programs and services at our YMCA each year.

This campaign truly helps improve the lives of children, and families. Please help if you can and give generously when called between March 14 and April 5.

DearFriendsattheGreenfieldYMCA: I was called last week by a woman who was doing a phone survey for theYMCAinGreenfield.Iwasveryimpressedbythiskindofoutreachand grateful for the opportunity to give some input to the Y.

I wanted to add something to the “survey” that I didn’t think to mention over the phone. One of the things I like best about the YMCAinGreenfieldisthatitseekstoliveoutitspolicyofnon-discrimination.AttheYMCAinGreenfieldIhaveseenindividualsofdifferent ages, genders, ethnicities, mental and physical abilities, andbodytypes.IusedtothinkthatGreenfieldisfairlyhomogenous, but having seen such a diversity of people at the Y, I realize that perhapsGreenfieldsimplydoesnothavethatmanyplacesthatfeel safe and comfortable to such a wide range of people. I have seen more diversity in the Y building than in any other building in GreenfieldandIthinkthatsaysalotaboutlivingoutyourvalues! That the YMCA creates a safe place for diversity is something tonurtureandcelebrate.IwouldencouragetheGreenfieldYtocontinue doing what it can to encourage not just the participation of those who might otherwise be socially or economically marginalized, but also to encourage greater interaction among people across their differences.

ThankstoallthestaffwhohelpmaketheGreenfieldYMCAworksowell and be so inclusive, and kudos on seeking to make it better by ongoing consultations and invitations for input.

Dawn Dorsey meets a new Exercise is Medicine member to discuss health issues and a fitness plan.

exerciSe iS Medicine progrAMThe Y-Exercise is Medicine Program is a twelve week physician referral wellness program conducted by the YMCA in Greenfield. The referred patients start with a free thirty minute consultation with Y’s Exercise Specialist, Dawn Dorsey or Jayne Trosin. Dawn and Jayne evaluate their physical needs and wellness goals to determine the best of five wellness tracks they should start in. Any of the five tracks are twelve weeks long and costs non-members $99. Support is available using the Sliding Fee Scale chart which can cover up to 70% of the program fee. The five tracks are Water Therapy/Water Fitness classes, Group Exercise classes, the First Step Fitness program, the Y-Boost program conducted in the nautilus Center or Diabetes Care Program/Life Management. At the tenth week of the twelve week track participants meet with Dawn/Jayne again to discuss how they want to continue their wellness journey. Whatever track people choose, Y staff monitors attendance and fitness gains. If attendance wanes, there are follow-up phone calls. All Exercise is Medicine program participants get weekly wellness tips e-mailed to them each of the twelve weeks. Physicians also receive a summary of their patients progress and success at the conclusion of the program.

1. Coronary Artery disease 2. Stroke 3. HighbloodPressure 4. Diabetes 5. Arthritis

6. Osteoporosis 7. HighCholesterol 8. Obesity 9. Depression 10. Cancer

“ The diabetes Care program at the YMCA was instrumental in my ability to get a handle of the progression of this condition. until that class, I really didn’t understand the fundamental facts about diabetes, including how it affected my body systems, what the risks are and the things that I could do to minimize them. The combination of information from trained professionals, a library of information, feedback on diet and overview of meal planning, and support and clarity on the role of exercise in managing the condition enabled me to make informed decisions. i took control of this condition, no longer thinking that the there was an inevitable conclusion to the outcome of this condition. the changes involved the way i ate, exercised and i minimized the impact of carbs on my body.

This transition was particularly poignant for me who watched my entire family suffer severe consequences from diabetes, including amputation, heart disease and lives cut extremely short. if you have diabetes and have not yet received an education covering this information, please give yourself this gift to ensure the best quality of life possible.”

The goal of Healthy kids camp is to provide a safe environment for children and families to learn about making healthy choices, learn the basics of eating healthy, and to make a commitment to exercise as a family on a daily basis.

This camp will help families utilize the principle of “5,4,3,2,1,0”; to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day; to drink 4 glasses of water a day; to have 3 servings of low-fat dairy daily; to limit screen time to 2 hours per day; to exercise at least 1 hour every day; and to consume 0 sugary drinks such as soda or fruit juices.

Healthy Kids Camp will help campers and their families make better food choices, while keeping the family budget in mind. Campers will learn fun new ways to exercise; things that the whole family can enjoy at home, by participating in fun active games that will keep them moving. In addition to the gym activities, each day campers will spend time in our Kid Fit workout center; with strength training and cardio exercise.

Good things happen when we help families unplug and play together. Kids and adults benefit from contact with nature as well as unstructured play and exploration.

That’s an incredible amount of “teachable mo-ments” where I can actually change the course of that child’s life. It is an awesome responsibility and I take it seriously. It is sometimes stressful but always rewarding.

Preschool Parent recently wrote:

“My husband and I both work full time and because of this we need childcare. This past September, our son was just old enough to be enrolled in the Y’s full day preschool. I knew he was going to be the youngest at the school and I did have my reservations like all mothers do aboutsendingtheirfirstchildtoschool. The Y’s preschool has early care which allows me to drop him off early so I can get to work on time. every day he is excited to go to school, he comes home happy and loves to tell me all about his day. Once a week during the school day, he gets a swimming lesson! It is so great that they are teaching him how to swim andtoberespectfulinthewater.Healso has a gymnastics lesson each week (his favorite!) and gets to run around and play. The school has ‘theme’ days that keep him entertained and crafts that I would have never thought about doing with him. The difference I have seen in my childinjust4monthsistenfold–fromhis gross motor skills to his vocabulary to pOTTY TrAInInG! The teachers are great and engaging. If I ever have a question or concern all I have to do is bring it up and they are forthright with answers. It is a pleasure to be part of the Y’s preschool, thank you!”

This summer/fall the long awaited $50,000,000 new Court House Project is set to begin. Some time between July and Sep-tember the current Court House parking lot will be fenced off and never again be available for night time/weekend Y Member over flow parking. Y members will need to park in the town parking lot across from Hope & Olive. If the Y’s two back lots are full, the town presently charges for parking 8 am - 6 pm Monday thru Saturday. We are negotiating with the town to see if any modifications to these hours could be made. Stay tuned for more info.

“ I don’t necessarily have the best past, but through volunteering for leaders Club at any and all areas of the Y and at events such as Community Meals alongside my leader friends, I have been striving to rectify that and work towards a better future, through volunteering as well as our monthly leaders fun nights (where we go to sports games, mall trips, etc).

i’ve had a blast and formed strong, meaningful friendships that have helped to shape me as a person.”
