VICKY SMALLThis production is dedicated in loving memory of Vicky Small.

Violet Hope Small made her final curtain call, peacefully, on Saturday evening July 23 in the presence of family and loved ones. Throughout her life, as both a guidance counselor in Harlem, NY schools and as a costume designer in Off-Broadway theaters in New Jersey and Florida, Vicky was able to “Mother” literally thousands of young people.

“Vicky Small was a devoted costumer who came to FST as a volunteer and went on to work for Florida Studio Theatre for over twenty years,” says Richard Hopkins, Producing Artistic Director. “A school teacher in her first life, a devoted wife and mother at home, and a true ‘servant of the people’ through the art she loved. She was an example for us all. She was a dear friend, a mother to us all, a tireless lover of the theatre, and one of the many ‘great souls’ who keep this world on its axis. She will be sorely missed.”

Susan Angermann, former Costume Shop Manager, had a very close working relationship with Vicky Small. She says “Vicky’s dining table at home was really an auxiliary costume shop. Long hours and last minute changes never diminished her passion for costuming and FST. When I was new to Sarasota and learning the theatre world here, she was a great supporter. Her caring and commitment made working together on many productions always a pleasure.”

Many guest artists also had the pleasure of working with Vicky. Guest costume and set designer Marcella Beckwith says “During the 25 plus years I worked with Vicky Small as colleague and friend, I encountered a generous, accomplished, proficient, sometimes exasperating woman who was a consummate costumer, a trusted advisor, a good friend but above all else, she was loyal, to her friends, to her family, to the world she believed in; she inspired us all to be the best we could be.”

FST FORUMSSun Records Studios and Sam Phillips

“Everyone knew

FUN FACTS:“Blue Suede Shoes” was

Sun Records first national hit.

Phillips challenged Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash to achieve gold record sales, offering a free Cadillac to the first. The contest is commemorated in a song by the “Drive-by Truckers“. The winner

of the cadillac? Carl Perkins.

Phillips’ pivotal role in the early days of rock and roll was exemplified by a celebrated jam session on December 4, 1956 which came to be known as the Million Dollar Quartet.

Phillips had an open style and insightful guidance that seemed to allow musicians to search and feel their way to a point to where they would perform beyond his and their own expectations. He recorded looking for a feel, not technical perfection, and was always seeking what he called the perfect/imperfect cut. This meant that it was not technically perfect, but perfectly conveyed the feeling and emotion and gave the song a living personality, partially due to it being technically imperfect.

Phillips is credited with teaching production to Presley who used this knowledge into his career with RCA Victor. Although Steve Sholes was credited as the official producer of Elvis after his move to RCA it was Elvis who, in reality, produced most of the music using what he had learned from Sam Phillips.

that I was just a struggling cat down here trying to develop new and different artists, and get some freedom in music, and tap some resources andpeople that weren’tbeing tapped.” - Sam Phillips

Sun Records Studio.

FST FORUMSThere are eight characters in Million Dollar Quartet: the four music legends, their two back up musicians, the head of Sun Records Sam Phillips, and a woman named Dyanne who came along with Elvis. However, even though Elvis’ girlfriend did come to the recording studio that night, her name was not Dyanne. This woman is loosely based on Elvis’ short-term girlfriend at the time.

She is mentioned in Peter Guralnick’s 1994 Elvis biography during Elvis’ vacation in Las Vegas, November of 1956. “He stayed at the New Frontier with his cousin Gene and attended all the shows. At the outset of his visit he dated Marilyn Evans, a dancer at the New Frontier, and invited her to come see him in Memphis in December.” A month later, she showed up with Elvis at Sun Studio Records.

The only information we know about Marilyn Evans is from the people who were there the night of the jam session. She was nineteen years old at the time and only dated Elvis for a few weeks. While Guralnick got this information from first-person sources, there is still no concrete evidence of Marilyn’s existence, except for the Million Dollar Quartet recording and the famous photograph of the quartet.

In the recording, halfway through the audio tape of the jam session, you can hear a female’s voice asking, “Would this rover boys trio sing ‘Farther Along’?” The voice is believed to be Marilyn’s, but other accounts credit Sam’s secretary Marion Keisker with asking the question. The photograph taken in Memphis that night was also allegedly cropped to feature the quartet; the unedited version shows a girl believed to be Evans.

Dyanne to Marilyn: Elvis’ Mystery Woman by Jordan Nickels

Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Marilyn Evans.

FST FORUMSElvis’ Mystery Woman cont’dIt wasn’t until the Chicago Tribune ran a story about the missing-girlfriend mystery for the premiere of the musical Million Dollar Quartet did the real Marilyn Evans stepped out of hiding. Her name is Marilyn Knowles-Riehl, and she contacted the Tribune after seeing the article, asking for the whereabouts of Elvis’ mysterious girlfriend.

In an interview with the Tribune, she described Elvis Presley as “extremely honorable” and was okay when their relationship faded a few weeks later. “I always preferred classical music,” she explained. “We were just into different things, not that one’s better than the other.” She had actually never listened to the recording until the week before the interview took place. However, Marilyn pointed out that it was not her that requested “Father Along,” but the voice that asked for “End of the Road” was her.

For 52 years she has hidden in plain sight, a missing part of one of American music’s most legendary nights.

One of the most famous nights in music history happened by pure coincidence.

Carl Perkins was at Sun Record Studios with his brothers, Clayton and Jay Perkins, as well as drummer W.S. Holland, to record new music. Perkins had already had some success at this point with the song “Blue Suede Shoes.” The owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips, brought in a great piano player, Jerry Lee Lewis, to widen Perkin’s rockabilly sound.

Former Sun Record’s artist, Elvis Presley, was next to arrive to pay Sam Phillips a visit, along with his girlfriend at the time, the now mysterious Marilyn Evans. Elvis was enjoying Perkin’s recording session; so much so that he went down to join them in the studio. During the jam session, the fourth member of the Quartet came into the mix, country artist Johnny Cash. He had come wanting to hear Carl Perkin’s recording session in person. With the quartet complete, the famous jam session began.

Sound engineer Jack Clement was in the studio that night and knew he had to preserve this moment in history, thus leading to the now famous recording. Sam Philips called the Memphis Press-Scimitar, who sent entertainment editor Bob Johnson over to cover the story. Johnson’s article about the night came out the next day in the paper, under the headline “Million Dollar Quartet,” hence the origin of the name with the famous picture.

GERRI AARON To me, FST is a great theater experience in the respect that I’ve seen plays in New York City and then seen the very same plays here; they are just as good if not better. Richard Hopkins is amazing; he continues to se-lect plays that both confirm and challenge one’s beliefs. FST is a Sarasota treasure that keeps getting better.

ED & JUDY CHRISTIAN If you travel the coun-try you will never find one venue/campus that offers not just one, but two main stages, two cabarets theatres, a theatre lab and improv op-portunities. All this and absolute professional theatre to boot. We willingly support FST as it is the jewel in the artistic crown of Sarasota.

GEORGIA COURT I love great theater and FST delivers that. FST is among the best theater companies I have seen, but it is more than a the-ater company. It is an organization that recog-nizes it is part of the greater community--and it reaches out to that community in positive, pro-ductive ways. Having FST so accessible adds to the joy of living in the fabulous arts community that is Sarasota.

GULF COAST COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Together with its donors, Gulf Coast Community Foundation transforms our region through bold and proactive philanthropy. Gulf Coast is a pub-lic charity that was created in 1995 through the sale of the Venice Hospital. Since then, we have become the philanthropic home of more than 600 families who have established charitable funds here, and we have invested over $227 million in grants in the areas of health and hu-man services, civic and economic development, education, arts and culture, and the environ-ment. Learn more at GulfCoastCF.org.

BOB & BONNY ISRAELOFF Our favorite FST story happened while attending a performance for the first time, many years ago and saying, “This is theater! Do they have a season subscrip-tion?!” FST is thought provoking, Broadway worthy theater. We believe FST is important because it enriches our community; helps make Sarasota what it is. This is why we have proudly contributed to past expansions; especially the new Gompertz Theatre complex, to aid FST’s mission in being ever more accessible to the public.

ERNIE KRETZMER IN LOVING MEMORY OF HIS WIFE ALISA I would describe FST as un-commonly, intimate theater, well-articulated and succinct. FST is important to me because I can usually follow the dialog despite a hearing problem --- almost invariably with great en-joyment. It’s the perfect window to take in the contemporary scene. Favorites have been Kate Alexander in “Golda’s Balcony” -superbly acted! And a comedy featuring Carolyn Michel playing the part of a dog (interfering in a marriage) can’t remember title....but lots of good laughs.

DENNIS & GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is im-portant to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transforma-tive power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated but so highly skilled in their craft. The values of the theater and its leadership, as re-flected in its mission, and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the main stage, in the cabaret, and in its education and community outreach programs, are values that we

CO-PRODUCERSGAELE BARTHOLD FST is family and an inte-gral part of my life. Quality and diverse stage productions, at affordable prices are but one component of FST’s offerings. Other contri-butions include extensive contact with local schools to foster student creativity and theatre appreciation; structured and wide ranging educational programs for adults and children; community forums and other community outreach programs; and a strong commitment to new play development and excellence in the arts. FST is a gem.

JOAN & LARRY CASTELLANI We choose to donate to the performing arts in Sarasota to keep them alive & well. We are proud to be sponsors of FST and are excited to see this Tony Award winning production this season.

ROBERT & WENDY GRADY We jumped at the chance to Co-Produce Million Dollar Quartet. Having seen the original on Broadway, and recognizing that it captured the essence of a seminal change in American culture, we are enamored with this show... it also helps that we are great fans of all of the characters and their work.

The HERALD-TRIBUNE MEDIA GROUP enjoys a history in this community that spans more than 90 years. Partnering with organizations such as Florida Studio Theatre allows us to contribute to our region’s rich creative culture in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Venice providing an unparalleled media landscape through the newspaper, HeraldTribune.com.

GAIL & SKIP SACK Florida Studio Theatre brings world class acting and phenomenal, thought provoking plays to Sarasota. We’re delighted to support FST in this mission.

so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theater.

ANNE NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said: “My mother used to say, “The best way to find you is to lose yourself, by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.” So, giving has always been an im-portant family value, which in childhood was reinforced by the community experience of

surviving The Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

DOROTHY WALDRON I support FST for its di-versity of programming; Mainstage, Cabaret, Improv, WRITE A PLAY children’s program and VIP program, for special needs children. Also, there is summer camp and classes for adults; it is truly a wonderful community asset.
