SEASON UNDERWRITERSGERRI AARON To me, FST is a great theater experience in the respect that I’ve seen plays in New York City and then seen the very same plays here; they are just as good if not better. Richard Hopkins is amazing; he continues to select plays that both confirm and challenge one’s beliefs. FST is a Sarasota treasure that keeps getting better.

ED & JUDY CHRISTIAN If you travel the country you will never find one venue/campus that offers not just one, but two main stages, two cabaret theatres, a theatre lab and improv opportunities. All this and absolute professional theatre to boot. We willingly support FST as it is the jewel in the artistic crown of Sarasota.

GEORGIA COURT I love great theater and FST delivers that. FST is among the best theater companies I have seen, but it is more than a theater company. It is an organization that recognizes it is part of the greater community - and it reaches out to that community in positive, productive ways. Having FST so accessible adds to the joy of living in the fabulous arts community that is Sarasota.

GULF COAST COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Together with its donors, Gulf Coast Community Foundation transforms our region through bold and proactive philanthropy. Gulf Coast is a public charity that was created in 1995 through the sale of the Venice Hospital. Since then, we have become the philanthropic home of more than 600 families who have established charitable funds here, and we have invested over $227 million in grants in the areas of health and human services, civic and economic development, education, arts and culture, and the environment. Learn more at GulfCoastCF.org

ROBERT & BONNY ISRAELOFF Our favorite FST story happened while attending a performance for the first time, many years ago and saying, “This is theater! Do they have a season subscription?!” FST is thought provoking, Broadway worthy theater. We believe FST is important because it enriches our community; helps make Sarasota what it is. This is why we have proudly contributed to past expansions;

especially the new Gompertz Theatre complex, to aid FST’s mission in being even more accessible to the public.

ERNIE KRETZMER IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALISA KRETZMER I would describe FST as an uncommonly, intimate theater, well-articulated and succinct. FST is important to me because I can usually follow the dialogue despite a hearing problem - almost invariably with great enjoyment. It’s the perfect window to take in the contemporary scene. Favorites have been Kate Alexander in Golda’s Balcony -superbly acted! And a comedy featuring Carolyn Michel playing the part of a dog (interfering in a marriage) can’t remember title...but lots of good laughs.

DENNIS & GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is important to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transformative power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated but so highly skilled in their craft. The values of the theatre and its leadership, as reflected in its mission, and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the main stage, in the cabaret, and in its education and community outreach programs, are values that we so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theater.

ANNE H.S. NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said: “My mother used to say, “The best way to find you is to lose yourself, by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.” So, giving has always been an important family value, which in childhood was reinforced by the community experience of surviving The Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

DOROTHY WALDRON I support FST for its diversity of programming; Mainstage, Cabaret, Improv, WRITE-A-PLAY children’s program and VIP program, for special needs children. Also, there is summer camp and classes for adults; it is truly a wonderful community asset.

Page 7: Mainstage Playbill - Florida Studio Theatre · ALICE GATLING (Lena) Alley Theatre: Doubt, To Kill A Mockingbird, Our Lady of 121st St., The Exonerated, The ... York Theatre Workshop

CO-PRODUCERSGAELE BARTHOLD FST is family and an integral part of my life. Quality and diverse stage productions, at affordable prices are but one component of FST’s offerings. Other contributions include extensive contact with local schools to foster student creativity and theatre appreciation; structured and wide ranging educational programs for adults and children; community forums and other community outreach programs; and a strong commitment to new play development and excellence in the arts. FST is a gem.

HARRIETTE BUCKMAN Other producers and co-producers have said it all with regard to why they so strongly support FST. Its mission resonated with the Buckman’s and our support was made in loving memory of Fred whose enjoyment of theater, orchestra and opera was lifelong.

COOKIE BOUDREAUX is proud to support FST and the production of brownsville song. FST continues to offer programs that broaden our views of who we are as human beings. Now more than ever we are challenged to expand to include ‘others’ which we might otherwise never ‘know’ - our very concepts, beliefs and limits are called into question – this is the joy of constantly growing. The production of brownsville song is a powerful and timely expression of the possibilities that lie within each of us as Human Beings – if we dare look.

JOEL & SANDY CUBA Florida Studio Theatre is much more than just a theatre. FST’s involvement with children and adults though its education programs makes it a community asset that anyone can access. We really enjoy the many forums and special events. FST does as much off stage as on stage. For these reasons we have been increasingly involved with FST and plan to continue on this path.

RUTH GORTON FST is truly a great regional theatre that professionally produces the work of the playwright, including children through its WRITE A PLAY program. It is a joy to see school children try their hands at playwriting and then to see their plays produced on the FST stage. It is equally exciting to see plays produced by contemporary artists and it is a thrill for me to sponsor these productions.

ELAINE M. KEATING Ed Keating retired to Sarasota about the same time that Richard Hopkins and Kate Alexander started the tiny theatre group that eventually grew into the exquisite five theatre complex we have here today. He was so impressed with Richard and with the wonderful plays being produced on “a shoestring.” I remember how surprised Ed was to learn that the Mainstage was to be called the Keating Theatre. Ed is gone now. I’m certain he would be so proud of how you have evolved. Great theatre! Accessible to everyone!

The HERALD-TRIBUNE MEDIA GROUP enjoys a history in this community that spans more than 90 years. Partnering with organizations such as Florida Studio Theatre allows us to contribute to our region’s rich creative culture in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Venice providing an unparalleled media landscape through the newspaper, HeraldTribune.com.

INA SCHNELL I have been an avid supporter of FST for over 20 years for three major reasons: First, FST’s entertaining plays emphasizing the human condition offers us a special insight and connection to the world, where our opinions may change, through freeing us and challenging us to consider our assumptions. Secondly, the inspiring WRITE-A-PLAY program which reaches 50,000 children yearly. And third, FST’s low ticket prices that make it possible for so many to be able to afford to attend.

ALAN & LOIS SCHOTTENSTEIN We are proud to support FST and lucky to have such great theater in Sarasota. FST reaches out to the community and provides wonderful affordable productions at the Broadway level. The play brownsville song is a play relevant to our time.

SALLY YANOWITZ Florida Studio Theatre is a wonderful organization that continually does new and innovative work. I love the theatre and being able to support the plays on the co-producer level has become a joyous part of my life! The arts are important and FST honors their importance.

FST FORUMS

I have always wanted to attend college outside New York City. Aside from receiving a good education, I would be able to broaden my horizons and experience new forms of culture. One of my teachers told me that the reason we learn about all these different places we might never visit, like Egypt or the Pacific Ocean, is because in life you have to make adjustments and be flexible. If you’re not used to changes in school, how are you going to face them in life?

““

After two trials, a jury convicted gunman Lawrence Harris to 47 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Tray Franklin.

On Friday, June 29, 2012 Trendon (Tray) Franklin was shot down in an act of senseless violence by Lawrence Harris.

Tray Franklin was an avid boxer who was working hard to make his dreams come true. In 2012 Tray was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the New York Daily News for his essay.

In 2012 The New York Daily News published an article with the headline:

Pat Russo, a retired narcotics detective who trained Franklin in a vital program called Cops and Kids Boxing, said “Tray was the typical kid who comes into the gym off the bullet-crazy ghetto street and laces on a pair of boxing gloves to try to straighten out his life with guts, hard work and discipline. Tray was a good kid who lived with his mom after his dad was murdered when Tray was 5... Tray went to school by day, worked nights and squeezed the gym in between. He was eliminated in his third fight in last year’s Golden Gloves and came right back to the gym because he knew that turning failure into harder work would bring eventual success. That’s who Tray Franklin was.”
