President’s Corner

Your Board. Your Club.

The torch passed and your new Board began its work on March 23rd. They have a solid and focused list of initiatives that build on the last Board’s work to update our look and internet presence. Exciting stuff that the Board hopes will improve web accessibility, calendaring, communi-cations, and visibility. I feel privileged to work with them: Nicolle Bissonnette, Peter Durand, Susan Martin, Jean Mura-chanian, Joel Smith, and Dick Roy.

You might note some new names, which is particularly rewarding and reminds me of a vital part of our Club — your Club.

We are an ALL-volunteer organization that thrives or fails on the efforts of its members.

So, with a tip o’the cap to Alexis de Tocqueville:

The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens. *

The Board invites you to comment, sug-gest, critique, step up, offer to help, lead trips, get involved or perform a function that is vital to our Club’s health.

Thank you and I look forward to working on your behalf this year.

We will be having training rides, and also join some other rides around the area, or you can train on your own or with other clubs if you don't live near. The Trek is not especially difficult, but you should be prepared with some mileage to manage the distances over the three days. Rest stops

are spaced generally 12-20 mile increments, although the first is a bit further. There are volunteer opportunities, as well! When: 06/16/2017 - 7:00 AM to 06/18/2017 Reg. Deadline: 05/13/2017 Leader: Mary Pow ers, 781-789-1945 H Location: Sunday River Resort, 97 Sum m it Rd, New ry

Board Meeting Summary for March 1, 2017 6:15-6:50 PM In attendance: Jean Murachanian, Hans Hackett, Nicole Bissonnette

Excused: Br yan Van Dussen, Peter Durand, Jim Lennox, Jonathan Fr eedner

Guest: Susan Martin, Joel Sm ith

AAUUC – We were relocated during our meeting by the Reverend who claimed our lease did not include a meeting room and it was our understanding that it did. We need to review our lease to confirm our agreement with the church.

The following discussion took place:

1. Winterfest – – topics discussed:

Is it possible we could find a venue inland that still has snow before the season ends?

Carter’s X-Country Ski Center in Bethel or Oxford were presented as options and it was decided to let the members vote in the General Meeting that evening and there seemed to be enough interest to deserve further research.

Since this meeting contact was made with Carter’s in Bethel and Oxford and due to varying snow conditions between the two sites and questions in regards to how they could accommodate a large group with their cur-rent business volume, the use of either of these locations will require longer term planning.

2. Marketing Material – updates:

Through an email conversation it was decided that a 4 fold brochure was the favored option and each fold could represent a different season.

Deadline is to have these new materials available for the following:

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy www.appalachiantrail.org, the organization that manages the AT, holds a biennial conference. This year it is in Maine. August 4-11 at Colby College. The AMC and the MATC are working as co-sponsors to organize this event and it is being advertised as the largest hiking conference in the US this year.

We will need a quorum in order to allocate the funds for these new marketing materials

3. Banking –

We have not yet identified a financial institution that offers two signature funds transfers and based upon the number of contacts made it does not seem this is an available option. As an alternative we can issue certifi-cates of deposit in multiple names in order to diversify access to our finances.

4. Activities Level of Difficulty –

discussion on establishing a universal scale for level of difficulty that would be included with posted activi-ties and it was suggested that “book time” might be a possible option.

5. Transition Board Meeting –

sometime in the coming weeks, and prior to the next General Meeting, a transition meeting will be sched-uled in order to establish the beginning of the new Board.

For more information please contact the board members at [email protected].

Next Board Meeting – 5 April, 6 pm at the AAUUC followed by the General Meeting at 7 pm.

Respectfully Submitted by

Hans Hackett, Secretary

Mixing Business and Pleasure in a Tropical Paradise: Permaculture and Conservation in the Guna Yala Islands of Panama ~BY DAVE SANTILLO MARCH 3, 2017

Fresh from a morning of paddling, strolling around palm-fringed beaches, and snorkeling on surrounding coral reef, our group of 11 sea kayakers sat under a cane shelter on the edge of a large white sand beach on an island in the Carib-bean Sea called Masargandup, digesting lunch and sipping water from coconuts.

On the other side of the sandy clearing, an important “business” meeting was underway. Geraldo DelValle, a member of the indigenous Guna community, smiled broadly and gestured wildly as he excitedly talked of his plans for the island, sneaking a bite every now and then from the plate of pasta salad and veggies we had shared with him from our lunch cooler.….

Our host on the island, Geraldo had spent 25 years as a Profes-sor of Agriculture at a university in Panama City, and now was back home devoting his energies specifically to benefit his community and to protect the natural environment – two closely intertwined concepts in Guna culture. During our visit to Masargandup, Geraldo shared several of his island initia-tives with our group. On the edge of a grove of coconut trees, we learned about his efforts at growing vegetables and fruits in the sandy soil, organic composting and building soil, and con-serving water. Geraldo spoke with passion about the need to conserve entire ecological systems in his homeland. It quickly

became apparent that Geraldo was in the early stages of applying Permaculture principles to his island, even if he wasn’t familiar with the word.…. Story continues. Read more at https://puma-diaries.com

Website Change To Improve Clarity One of the goals of the cur-rent MOAC Board is to im-prove the club’s presence on the Internet. A small step has been taken by creating a sep-arate page to list Member Benefits.

You will find this page listed in the green navigation bar down the left side of the screen. It is titled, amazingly, Member Benefits.

On this page you will find information, that was already on our website, but was not always easy to find.

This page lists what you get as a member; both what MOAC provides, as well as discounts and offers from area outfitters, and other places MOACers love to hang out.
