While our law-making orators were lung-powering their mite to churn out a potion thatwould defang the ANNAcondas (who are ournew honoured guests but more deadly thanthe slithery ones in the zoos), the latter goadedthe shouters’ spleen in the absence of the heroof the event who was defying nature and hun-ger, a licence freely granted by our republic ofunlaws.

The two parliamentarians who stood out ofthe motley crowd in the Lok Sabha were thehandsome Sashi Tharoor, the best Englishspeaker in Parliament, and Pranab Mukherjeewho bore the brunt of the vacuous attack.

The good old man has weathered worsestorms created by worse people and he stoodlike the Valluvar statue off Kanyakumari inthe Indian Ocean and upped Anna Hazare’sbody temperature by a few degrees Fahren-heit so that he could, without hurting his pride, put his surrender to the frailty of man who is

but a body plus .... There is time yet, before the Republic Day,

to contrive a come back so that thevacancy created by Godse in 1948 could befilled by another Mahatma. We have not beentold yet what Mahatma 2 has to offer us, butit is presumed that he would preach what hepractises, namely wearing the whitest clothes.

Tinopal Company would take over Indiathat is Bharat. None shall enter the legisla-tures, including of course the Parliament, wear-ing any fancy clothes but only garments madein white khadhi. The new Gandhi will not bederisively called by any Emperor “the halfnaked Fakir” as Mohan Chand Karam ChandGandhi was called. So let us wind up the funin Parliament with the resolution that thereshall be a succession of Gandhis as the ‘Fatherof the Nation’ who has to pass the MohanChand Test.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 93“Kuzhandhaiyum Deivamum” was remade in Telugu as ¡°Letha

Manasulu” (1966) with Jamuna, Haranath and Kutty Padmini inlead roles. Directed by the same duo Krishnan-Panju, it did nothowever enjoy the same success as the Tamil original.

But Meiyappan hit the bull’s eye with the Hindi version ¡°DoKaliyan” (1967). It was directed by Krishnan-Panju and had notedstars Mala Sinha and Biswajeet as the couple. The role of the twinswas enacted by an impish girl Baby Sonia who made a splash. Later,as a young woman and known as Neetu Singh (her given name),she was a successful Hindi film star. She married the top star RishiKapoor and retired from films to lead a life of domesticity. ¡°DoKaliyan” was a silver jubilee-week hit and further brightened theradiant image of Meiyappan and AVM Studios.

After S. S. Vasan, Meiyappan was the most successful Hindi filmproducer from South India. Many others followed his footsteps butall did not achieve his success. During a certain period, almost everysuccessful South Indian producer trod into the Hindi film market butmany burnt their fingers. And some even beyond their wrists!

Another successful film that Seetharaman wrote for Meiyappanwas ¡°Ramu” (1966). A heavily-laden sentimental family melo-drama of a couple with a son who loses his speech and turnsdumb, it had Gemini Ganesh and K. R. Vijaya as the tragic coupleand a brilliant child actor ‘Master’ Rajkumar as the dumb boy. A.C.Thirulokachandar directed it with much feeling and insight. ”Ramu”was a fine success and won many awards. It won the IndianGovernment’s Silver Medal and ‘Master’ Rajkumar won the FilmFans’ Association Award. So did Pushpalatha for her supportingrole. Interestingly, a smart dog which played an important role toowon an award from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty toAnimals (SPCA).

¡°Ramu” was remade in Telugu in 1968 with N.T. Rama Rao andJamuna in lead roles with ‘Master’ Rajkumar as the dumb boy.Thirulokachandar directed it too with equal success.

A memorable movie made in 1966 by Meiyappan was the hit¡°Anbe Vaa” which had the superstar and phenomenon M. G.Ramachandran as hero. It was the first time that the mega star andthe movie mogul came together to work in a film. The legend ofTamil cinema, a legend that still survives, ‘MGR”, as he is known, had been in films since 1936, a contemporary of Meiyappanbut, rather surprisingly, the mega star and the movie mogul did notcome together in a film until 1966.

The film that brought them together was “Anbe Vaa”, adaptedfrom a Hollywood movie ¡°Come September” (1961). A run-of-the-mill Hollywood movie by noted filmmaker Robert Mulligan, ithad an impressive cast with Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida,Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee. The film had a long run in India and,in Madras (now Chennai), it was a big hit. The theme song renderedby Billy Vaughn and his orchestra, and the song sung by BobbyDarin ¡°Multiplication, that’s the name of the game!” were solid hitsin India. The gramophone discs by Billy Vaughn were bestseller inIndia.

Not surprisingly, the romantic film with a novel storyline wasadapted for the Indian screen and the outcome was ¡°Anbe Vaa”.The coming together of MGR and Meiyappan per se made news inthe Tamil film world and expectations ran high from the word‘go’.

Marudur Gopala Ramachandran (1917-1984), immortalized un-der his legendary initials “MGR”, is a phenomenon in the historyof Indian cinema and he occupies a unique place in world cinematoo. Never in the history of world cinema has so much adulation, admiration and all been bestowed on a single person. He was muchmore than a phenomenon, more than a cult figure: a man of themasses and for the masses. One of the most popular Indians of ourtimes and chimes, his following among Tamils is incredible. Hischarisma remains undiminished and undiluted even after nearly threedecades of his passing away.
