Overview
How do you describe motion that’s taking place?
To describe motion, you must discuss speed.
Speed is the distance an object travels per unit of time.
To calculate speed to divide the distance it travels by the time it travels.
Speed equals distance per time distance (d)
time (t)
Speed is expressed in:kilometers (km)
hour (hr)
meters (m)
second (s)
kilometers (km)
hour (hr)

Constant Speed
An object that does not change it’s speed is traveling at a constant speed.
At any given interval, the object has a speed of 10 meters/second.

Average Speed
Average speed is equal to the total distance divided by the total time.
The average speed displayed on the graph is 42 kilometers per hour.

Calculating Speed
Speed = distance time
Time = distance speed
Distance = speed x time

Guided Practice (S)
Solve for speed:
Speed = distance time
Ex. A car race is 500 km long. It takes the winner 2.5 hours to complete it. How fast was he going?
Speed = distance = 500 km = 200 km/hr time 2.5 hrs
Ex. If a car travels 9 m in 3 s, what is the speed of the car? ___________

Speed = distance = 9 m = 3 m/s time 3 s
Guided Practice (T)
Solve for time:
Time= distance speed
Ex. It is 320 km to Las Vegas. If you average 80km/hr, how long will it take for you to get there?
Time= distance = 320 km = 4 hrs speed 80km/hr
Ex. The boy jogged 60 km in at a speed of 60 km/hr. How long did it take? ____________

Time= distance = 60 km= 1 hr speed 60 km/hr
Guided Practice (D)
Solve for distance:
Distance = speed x time
Ex. You are going on a trip. You average 80km/hr for 6hrs. How far did you go?
Distance = speed x time = 80km/hr x 6hrs = 400 km
Ex. The girl averaged 5 miles/hr for 2 hrs. How far did she run? ____________

Distance = speed x time = 5mi/hr x 2hrs = 10 miles
Assessment
Speed = distance time
Time = distance speed
Distance = speed x time
Using the given equations, solve the problems.
1. A football field is about 100 m long. If it takes a person 20 seconds to run its length, how fast (what speed) was he/she running?
a. 80 m/s
b. 120 m/s
c. 5 m/s
2. Every summer I drive to Michigan. It is 3900 km to get there. If I average 100km/hr, how much time will I spend driving?
a. 4000 hrs
b. 39 hrs
c. 10 hrs
3. If you drive at 100 km/hr for 6 hours, far will you go?
a. 600 km
b 106 km
c. 6000 km
4. If you run at 12 m/s for 15 s, how far will you go?
a. 180 m
b. 0.8 m
c. 3 m
