September, for me, means starting to think about the
holidays and gearing up for four months of fun and activities. During these months, we will continue to work hard to produce an excellent newsletter for you.
Though we can do the job of putting a great product together, it is you that makes it worth reading. All the residents, governing entities, clubs, schools, organizations, charities and businesses who contribute to this newsletter are who make the difference. I thank you for your support and will continue to support you.
Any new ideas or thoughts are always welcome. We encourage the younger residents to write about their community and their accomplishments. If you have a young writer in your home, we would love to hear from them.
Halloween is next month, so take lots of pictures of your parties and trick or treating adventures. We will place them in the next issue!
Happy Fall!

On August 7th Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri hosted
an informational meeting on the status of Golf Links Blvd. At that time, the director of the county’s Paving Assessment Program, David Brown explained that all Lake Bernadette property owners will be receiving a notice from the county.
That notice will outline the county’s proposal to re-pave Golf Links Blvd. and detail each owner’s option to vote for or against the re-paving proposal. That same notice will indicate the property owner’s financial responsibility for the project, should it be approved. As of press time there has not been a date set for that notice to be sent out.
Based on subsequent information received from Mr. Brown, we expect that the CDD’s financial responsibility will be just under $13,000 and that the CDD will have 12 votes. At the September 4th CDD meeting the Board of Supervisors voted 5 – 0 as follows; all 12 votes will be cast in favor of the proposal. Further, should the proposal be approved by the property owners, all of the required $13,000 will be paid from the CDD’s general reserve fund. This will result in no additional expense to CDD property owners.
Questions regarding the specifics of the proposal may be directed to Mr. David Brown at [email protected]. v

For those of us who live in Florida, the November election is not likely to sneak up on us. However there is a deadline that you may want to be aware of. The last day to register to vote is October 9, 2012. You can get a registration form at www.pascovotes.com. For those already registered, you can
avoid lines on Election Day by requesting a “Vote by Mail” ballot at the same site.
In late October, a candidate forum featuring several local contests will be held at the Lake Bernadette clubhouse – watch the lighted info signs for exact date and time. v

hello to all in Lake Bernadette. Patty and I just returned from a whirlwind
trip to Texas and Nevada. We watched with great concern as Issac pounded the Gulf Coast. Our friends in New Orleans and Biloxi survived but suffered major damage. May God watch over all who have suffered. Now for some quick (refresher) comments. I know many of these are getting repetitious, but as long as residents fail to comply, they are worth mentioning. 1. Trees and their trimming are the responsibility of the property owner, and that includes trees in the median between the sidewalk and the street. Please keep trees trimmed up to ten feet to allow safe navigation of people and cars. 2. Although most residents comply, a few continue to park in the street and over sidewalks. Street parking is prohibited by Florida statue and will be reported to the Pasco Sheriff for citation. Illegal parked vehicles will be towed if warnings are ignored. 3. Speeding on Montford and Gulf Links has substantially subsided,
but as with parking, a few refuse to slow down endangering our children and other pedestrians. Please keep your speed down to 20 MPH on side streets and 30 MPH on Gulf Links. I recently followed a car speeding at over 40 MPH on Montford. My camera is always at the ready and photos of speeders will be sent to the sheriff. 4. When walking and exercising your pets, remember to keep them
leashed and pick up any deposits they leave.
5. Residents witnessing any unlawful acts, theft, vandalism, assaults, and violations of law and order, report those actions to the sheriff. The HOA has no police powers over criminal acts. If your neighbor is overly noisy, blocks your driveway, or is stealing property, please call the sheriff and report it. HOA enforcement power is limited to those requirements in the Deed
Restrictions and Covenants. Save time and report sightings and violations to the sheriff.
Remember, the annual budget meeting will take place October 29th and the annual HOA meeting, the first Monday in December. Check the website (lakebernadettehoa.com) for more information. Respectfully, Jim Burns - President, HOA

Principal’s messageThe 2012-13 school year has gotten off to a great start! As evidenced by the increased flow of traffic in the parking lot, you can tell that New River Elementary is growing.. It just amazes me to watch as so much learning takes place at all levels every day. Our staff is growing and we have added a few new faces and a few have gone to other schools.
Our schoolwide theme this year focuses on our NRES garden. Each grade level will be learning through hands-on experiences in the garden, that are based on state standards. Our culmination will be a community farmer’s market that will be held in May.
We are excited that your child is at
our school. As the year progresses, please do not hesitate to call, e-mail or stop by to discuss any questions, concerns, or celebrations. My e-mail is [email protected] and I check it frequently! I am looking forward to an exciting year filled with many lifelong learning experiences.

$5,000 ScholarShiPfor HIgH scHooL stuDents
The Right Fit™ Foundation (www.rightfitprogram.com) announced its first annual $5,000 scholarship for local high school students. To qualify, students must be a US Citizen, a resident of Hillsborough County, and have a weighted high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must also attend one of the Foundation’s free college admission and financial aid classes along with their parents or guardians. Finalists may be interviewed. One scholarship will be awarded per year. The Right Fit™ Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3), dedicated to educating families about the college admission and financial aid process. Independent college consultant Kenneth Albert created The Right Fit™ Foundation to provide free classes to the community on how to select the right college, how to maximize financial aid, and how to reduce the family’s out-of-pocket expenses. Inspired by his own experience of changing careers mid-life, he realized that
students and their parents often miss the real heart of planning for college- getting the right fit to begin with. He wrote the book Finding the Right Fit: The Ultimate Guide to College (Mill City Press, 2009) to help families navigate the college search process and help students choose their career path wisely. This year, the Foundation is offering a $5,000 college scholarship, giving preference to middle income families. “These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college,” says Albert. Finalists may be asked to complete an interview. The scholarship is a one-time award (non-renewable) and will be paid directly to the accredited four-year college or university the winner chooses to attend.“The Right Fit Foundation is excited to help families that need it the most, and hope to expand the scholarship to $10,000 next year,” says Albert. v

If you’re active in the Pasco community, no doubt you’ve been hearing about
Big Brothers Big Sisters. The agency, which provides one-to-one volunteer mentors to children facing adversity, has been working hard to increase its impact on Pasco County.
The agency held two well-at-tended luncheons this year—one in West Pasco and one in East Pasco—in an effort to increase awareness, recruit volunteers and raise money to fund its programs. Next on the agenda is Big Broth-ers Big Sisters annual “Clays for Kids Fun-raiser”, sponsored by Earth Tech and held at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes. The event will be De-
cember 1st and it’s not too early to be a sponsor or form a team! Please support this effort to bring in funds that the agency will use to serve more children in Pasco County.
For more information about Big Brothers Big Sisters, and to find out how you can volunteer or support its mentoring programs, please visit www.bbbsfl.org or call 813-769-3600. v

Did You know...?
An important tool that can save your life and the life of your loved ones is a NOAA Weather Radio. According to FloridaDisaster.org, nearly 75 per-cent of tornado fatalities in Florida since 1950
have occurred between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., when people are least likely to be tuned into other sources of weather information. A NOAA Weather Radio is the lone government-operated radio system that provides National Weather Service severe weather warnings 24 hours a day.
If you live in the path of the severe storm, and your family has a NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio, the radio will automatically sound an alarm and then broad-cast the warning message, regard-less of the time of day. The newer weather radios even allow you to program the alarm to sound for specific counties and hazards. If you are hard of hearing or a heavy sleeper, there is even a kit available for the radio that includes a pillow shaker and strobe light which can wake you in the middle of the night.

Chamber members wishing to support this important program are invited to do so now. Our student citizens are always thrilled to leave with a bag full of “goodies” provided by chamber supporters. the following ways: Become a “Gold Star” Sponsor: For $50 per month ($450 per year). Monetary donations support the monthly ceremony, the Annual Student Citizen Banquet, and the chamber scholarship fund.
