By Holly ThorpeFor Lake Chelan This Week

Just off of Highway 97-A as you come into Chelan, as the road curves toward the lake, lies a small market on the right. Ivy crawls up the posts out front, flower baskets speckle the entryway, and a sign off to the side reads “Feed the Goats.”

Welcome to Sunshine Farm Market.

“When we first started [in 1991] it was very different, we just had a couple of apple bins and a tent,” said manager Rachel Evans.

Now, a full store stands in its place. The market is made of reclaimed apple orchard props, as are the matching outhouse and icebox. What’s inside, however, is some of Chelan Valley’s best produce. The orchard produces some of its own cherries and apples, but a rainbow of other fruits and vegetables line shelves.

“We buy from a variety of local orchardists and farmers,” Evans said. “Whatever’s fresh and in season. We try to get premium product in and focus on quality.”

The diverse wine selection at the Market comes almost entirely from the Manson and Chelan area, and Evans expects to add even more soon. She said that the Market has chosen to specialize in hard cider because of its current popularity in the Chelan area. The Evans family also owns the Tunnel Hill Winery, which shares a driveway with the Market.

And this time of the year, the Sunshine Farm Market hosts U-Press Cider weekends throughout September and October. Stop in on Saturday or Sunday from 11am to 4pm and press your own cider on their old-fashioned hand-crank press using apples you can purchase at the market. “It’s a little more family friendly,” Evans said. “But parents love it too.”

Lake Chelan This Week Friday, September 26, 2014 9INSIDE(Continued from Page 3)

Visitors can look for natural bath and body items, gifts for family and friends, and a variety of all-natural and specialty foods including local hummus, coffee, salsa, jams and mustards from around Eastern Washington.

The Sunshine Farm Market, like many other businesses in the area, is seasonal. It’s open from May until October, seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During their visit, shoppers are welcomed to free wi-fi, coffee, and a picnic area to enjoy their finds in.

Between samples of ripe local cherries and the baby goats housed nearby to be petted and named by community members in the annual naming contest, Sunshine Farm Market is less of a shopping trip and more of a field trip.

“I think our customers appreciate that atmosphere, sort of farmer-chic” Evans said.

“We try to really make it a good

experience.”

VIN DU LAC | MICHAELA’S VINEYARD:

Vin du Lac Winery is located on a hilltop bluff rising 200 feet above Lake Chelan, with superb views of the lake, Chelan Butte, and the town of Chelan. It is within the Lake Chelan Valley AVA. Lake Chelan’s unique grape growing characteristics were recognized in June of 2009 when the US Government granted designation as an American Viticulture Area (“AVA”).

The unique climate allows the winery to offer exceptionally crisp white wines, and brighter, leaner, red wines that have their own character but are reminiscent of the wines of old Bordeaux and the Northern Rhone. At Vin du Lac, they believe Lake Chelan will offer some of the most distinctive wines on the West Coast. Their goal is to produce food friendly, boutique quality wines, at affordable prices.

Larry Lehmbecker, Vin du Lac owner and wine maker, has a meticulous approach to winemaking which has garnered Vin du Lac numerous awards in the past for many of their wines. All of the lots of wine produced are very small, relecting a careful, demanding process for selecting vineyard plots and grapes for Vin du Lac wines. Most of the reds are vineyard and varietal blends, representing classic wine making technique. The whites are dry, minimally oaked, and food friendly.

The Vin du Lac Estate is 34 acres of prime orchard land irst farmed in the 1920’s. Ten acres of apples continue to be farmed, but in 2002 they planted “Michaela’s Vineyard”, named after Vin du Lac Muse, Michaela Markusson. Approximately 25 tons of wine grapes are harvested from Michaela’s Vineyard each year.

In addition to their winery, Vin du Lac’s French Bistro is well known for their

fresh and local cuisine. Chef Joseph Nagy’s menu relects this outlook, with breads, cheeses and charcuterie sourced from North Central Washington producers, salads prepared with local, seasonal produce selections, and fresh weekly seafood, plus their famous Prime Rib every Friday and Saturday.

Vin du Lac is located at 105 Highway 150 in Chelan.
