Chicken Poop for the Soul Author Reads In Nelson And SalmoFinding the heart and soul of the food movement can

sometimes mean getting your hands dirty – in a good way. Kristeva Dowling’s Chicken Poop for the Soul (Caitlin Press, 2011) is a witty, humorous and oft en bizarre jour-ney of trial and error as the author sheds urban life for rural independence. Dowling reads from her book on Monday, September 26 at the Salmo Public Library and Tuesday, September 27 at the Nelson Public Library.

Food sovereignty is defi ned as having the right to de-termine where your food comes from and how it is pro-duced. In 2008, alarmed by the impact agro-business was having on Canadian food quality and security, Dowling decided to take control of her own food source. In an at-tempt to achieve 100 percent self-suffi ciency on her small holding in BC’s Bella Coola Valley, she ploughed under her land, converted her garage to an intensive care unit for chickens and learned to hunt, fi sh, gather and preserve her own food.

Chicken Poop for the Soul is about a common dream: to leave the city and return to a simpler life. Between rendering maple syrup, mothering baby chicks, canning hundreds of pounds of preserves, tracking wild game and growing her own wheat, Dowling fi nds time to refl ect on her new-found tangible skills, her intangible problems and the politics and legislative barriers that face BC’s small farming community.

Th e Nelson Library reading is co-sponsored by the Koo-tenay Country Store Co-operative, who will also provide refreshments in that grand Co-op community tradition.

“Kristeva’s story resonates with the daily challenges and triumphs of our many co-op suppliers, intrepid growers who care about how we live on the land, and where our food comes from,” says Co-op Marketing Manager Joce-lyn Carver. “We’re excited to be co-sponsoring this event.”

Both readings begin at 7:30 pm. Dowling’s reading tour is a project of the Kootenay Library Federation and the host libraries.

Arts and Heritage Professional Development Workshop

Arts and Heritage organizations are facing many chal-lenges. Meet those challenges head-on with this upcoming professional development workshop in Nelson. Presented by Leslie Th ompson, this workshop will cover eff ective board management, volunteer recruitment and manage-ment, marketing and fundraising fundamentals for arts and heritage organizations – key elements for sustain-ability. Travel subsidies are available on a fi rst come-fi rst served basis for travel from communities in the Columbia Basin, further than 50 km from Nelson.

With 28 years of professional experience, Leslie has ad-vised, planned and executed numerous successful projects and campaigns for a variety of non-profi t organizations. She has taught many workshops as well as “Introduction to Non Profi t Management” at Mount Royal University in Calgary and “An Introduction to Fundraising” at Capilano University’s Arts & Entertainment Management Program. Job Description:This position provides outreach and in-office services to youth (13 - 18) in the Salmo area. This is a dynamic position requiring someone who is confident working in isolation, can communicate effectively and work directly with community partners, and is able to multi-task a large caseload. This position is funded through MCFD and IHA, requiring reporting for both contracts. The outreach worker covers a multitude of presenting issues, support and advocacy through one-on-one and group work. The A & D position requires knowledge and proven experience in working with youth with A & D or substance related issues.

Requirements:• Bachelors degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work or related

field and a minimum of 2 years experience working with high risk youth. Equivalences may be considered.

• Must have a valid drivers licence and reliable vehicle. Preference will be given to person with a Class 4 Drivers Licence.

• Must be flexible, available and willing to work evenings and weekends as required.

• Must have solid knowledge of the Salmo community.• Valid First Aid.• Experience in therapeutic recreation an asset.

Bears? An Electrifying SolutionIt is beginning to feel like fall and plums, apples, pears

and other fruit are the bounty of the season. But fall is also the season when we oft en see bears in town taking advantage of all the fruit that we make available. One solution is electric fencing. Bear Aware will be hosting a free electric fencing workshop on Th ursday, Sept. 8 to teach people how to use electric fencing to protect fruit trees and chickens.

Fruit is a high quality food that allows bears to put on fat quickly in preparation for hibernation. Huckleber-ries, other native fruits and food in higher elevations can supply bears with most of their nutritional needs. But if huckleberries in particular are in short supply, bears that would normally feed in the higher elevations come to our communities looking for food – and they fi nd fruit, gar-bage, chicke ns and other attractants.

Because domestic fruit trees grow near our homes, bears feeding on the fruit beneath or on these trees may learn to forage for other food near our homes. Bears can also be quite destructive to chickens. It is oft en the chick-en feed that attracts the bears initially, but they readily learn to catch and eat the chickens once they fi nd the food in the coop. Most coops cannot withstand the eff orts of a determined bear.

Solutions? Pick your fruit as it ripens; clean up windfall fruit as it falls; share fruit and picking duties with neigh-bours; keep chicken feed cleaned up and keep chickens in at night - and consider using electric fencing to protect trees, orchards and chicken coops.

Public Input Process For “Front Street Park” ImprovementsTh e piece of land next to the Kaslo Hotel belongs to the

Village of Kaslo and has been designated a ‘green space’ by the village council. It has been called many things over the years: the Bowling Green, Spirit Square, Market Square, and lately: Front Street Park.

For the past three years a small group of citizens have been discussing the possibility of turning this plain square of grass into an inviting public gathering place for resi-dents and visitors alike. Future plans for a covered area, some easy maintenance landscaping and a public wash-room are all being considered.

Currently the closest public washrooms to the down-town core are beside the Moyie (during hours of oper-taion) and in the Kemball Centre (during offi ce hours). Neither of these washrooms are accessible to people in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.

Since the land is owned by the Village of Kaslo, what-ever gets built there will become the responsibility of the village to look aft er. Th is public input process is to help determine the level of public support for these suggested park amenities and improvements. Also, in order to ac-cess capital funding for this project there must be demon-strated public support. Your participation and feedback prior to September 30 is greatly appreciated. Meadow Creek Spawning Channel Open House

Come see thousands upon thousands of deep red kokanee gathered together at the spawning channel near Meadow Creek at the north end of Kootenay Lake at an Open House on Sunday, September 11, between 11 am and 2 pm.

Th e event is hosted by the Fish and Wildlife Compensa-tion Program which is a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of BC, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. It works on behalf of its partners to conserve and enhance fi sh and wildlife aff ected by the creation of BC Hydro owned and operated generation facilities. Th e spawning channel is jointly funded and managed by the FWCP and the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO).

Each year between three and fi ve hundred thousand kokanee make their way into the Duncan River at the top end of Kootenay Lake and then “home” into Meadow Creek Spawning Channel.

“A large part of the channel’s success is due to the rela-tively high and consistent egg-to-fry survival rates,” says FLNRO’s senior fi sheries biologist, Jeff Burrows. “In nat-ural streams the egg-to-fry survival rate is usually less than 15%, but due to careful monitoring and manage-ment of water fl ows and spawning gravel condition, the survival rate in this channel is usually just under 50%.” Th at means for every 100 eggs deposited in the fall, nearly 50 fry exit the channel the following spring. Th e Channel usually receives more than 40 million eggs each year.

Th e 3.3 km looping spawning channel was the largest of its kind in the world when it was built in 1967 with BC

Hydro funds, compensating for upstream spawning habi-tat lost due to the construction of Duncan Dam. To this day the channel continues to play a very important role for kokanee; it accounts for about 75% of total kokanee fry production in Kootenay Lake.

While the spawning channel is open to the public for the duration of the spawning season (unless there is un-usually high bear activity), the Open House provides an opportunity for the public to ask the biologist questions about the kokanee and the Nutrient Restoration Program of Kootenay Lake.

“Since 1992 the FWCP and the Province of BC have been adding nutrients to Kootenay Lake and it is widely viewed as one of the most successful large-lake restoration projects in the world,” says FWCP public representative Grant Trower. “It helps the kokanee, which is considered a keystone species and important prey for predator fi sh; the Gerrard rainbow and bull trout thrive here because of the bountiful kokanee.”

Th e One Person ProjectIn April 2009, Liz Ross, a local nurse and 5

others travelled to Kahama, Tanzania with Th e One Person Project on a self-funded trip to deliver medical supplies to the District Hospital there, raise awareness about the health care needs in that area of Africa and advocate for supplies and equipment on their return. Prior to the trip, stu-dents from JV Humphries School donated $300 to purchase bicycles for an Aids Palliative Care Organization and a volleyball net and balls for a school in Tanzania. St. Andrews Church and many individuals donated a further $2500 (out of a total of $4500 from the much larger com-munities represented by our group) towards the purchase of labour and delivery kits, blood pres-sure machines and a computer for the Kahama District Hospital. Th e Nelson Soccer club donat-ed enough uniforms to outfi t 4 school teams and our local physiotherapist and others generously donated

equipment.Aft er her return, Liz sponsored 6 presentations about

her experience and collected more donations through silent auctions of African artifacts and the sale of her photographs from the trip which were displayed at Pri-mary Health Services and at the Christmas Faire. A local Sing-along group is generously giving half of the dona-tions received at their monthly get together to the One Person Project and to date an additional $4275 has been raised by the community of Kaslo and area to assist the hospital in Kahama (a total of over $7000!).

Since our visit in 2009, renovations and improvements have continued at the hospital. One Person Project fund-ing has helped paint and set up a room for a children’s clinic and the money donated has been used to purchase essential equipment locally (see photo above). Th ank you to all the people and organizations that have generously donated money and equipment – fundraising is ongoing.
