Jazz Fest Weekend Finale With Th e Boom Booms

As the Jazz Festival winds down its 20th year, and people walk up the hill from the bay with smiles on their faces wondering how the day could get any better, they’ll be drawn to the marvelous musical melodies of the Boom Booms who are playing at the Legion on Sunday night, July 31. When my father, Hans Kirchmann, passed away over a year ago, many residents of Kaslo and area helped my stepmother and me through our loss. Several assisted in sorting through the burgeoning paperwork when my mind was anything but sharp. JB Fletcher General Store Museum Opens Its Doors

Th e JB Fletcher Restoration Society has once again opened the doors to the historical JB Fletcher General Store Museum in Ainsworth. Th is heritage landmark was built aft er the Ainsworth fi re of 1896 that destroyed the original log struc-ture and fi rst general store in Ainsworth.

Take a walk back through time and experience an old fash-ioned general store with many of the original fi xtures, arte-facts and displays. Don’t miss our Heritage Day celebration on Sunday, July 31 from 11 am to 5 pm.

Th e museum also features the Kutenai Showcase which of-fers a collection of craft work by Kootenay artists for sale to those who visit. Celebrating Five Years Of Food Security In NKL

Local food is the best food if grown with care. North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society (NKLCSS) began its food security program fi ve years ago based on this premise.

Access to food is a basic human right.Food fi lls our bellies if we are lucky enough to have a

decent income or the skills and space to grow our own. If bad luck such as illness, divorce or job loss befalls us, many are just a pay-cheque away from relying on the pub-lic safety net. Seniors that worked retail or in the service industry without extra pensions or are widowed are likely making hard choices when it comes to covering bills or eating a high quality diet. Farmers that grow food oft en receive the least value for their work within the global food marketing system.

Th e Kaslo Food Security Project was created to take a small step in re-localizing the food system in the Koote-nay Lake area and bringing some balance to a precarious global system. It began with extensive public consultation in 2006 and has set about carrying out community wishes over the past fi ve years.

Over time, the project worked with partners to create a community food charter, create “Planting the Seeds” mov-ie, conduct education classes and newspaper columns on food related issues, and inspire people to plant more food through the Lawns to Gardens Program. Regionally it has worked to connect farmers with farmland and farm-ers with local markets through directories on our web-site, www.nklcss.org to build the fi nancial and marketing capacity for farmers. Food to Families program delivered local produce to families in need at the local pre-school programs in Kaslo and Meadow Creek.

Aft er more community consultation in 2009, where the community said there was a need for food storage cap-acity and a central location for accessing bulk produce, the Kaslo Food Hub was conceived to aid farmers, retailers and eat-ers.

Th e Food Hub has developed a creative project for supporting those in need of temporary assistance by acting as a pick up and organizing depot for farmers who drop off produce for local people to purchase in bulk through a Bulk Buying Club. One Canadian quarter per pound of food purchased by Bulk Buying Club members is donated to supporting food for people in need in Kaslo and Area D. Th e ethics of the program are dependent on farm-ers and Bulk Buying Club members using the marketing and organizing services of the Food Hub. Additionally donations of food and cash also go directly to support food for low income people. In a hard month up to 9.5% of Kaslo’s population may benefi t from the program.

Th e Food Hub has refrigerated storage for rent to the public for bulk food as well as a vast array of canning,

freezing, drying and processing equipment. Th is makes it aff ordable for everyone to preserve their own produce or local farmers’ food without the expense of investing in food smokers, dryers, juicers etc.

Funds from equipment rental assist the Food Hub in paying for utilities. Th e hub relies on an exhaustive series of grants that must be applied for all through the year in order to have staff for minimal but regular open hours and a system of volunteers who aid in Food Hub func-tioning. If grants no longer sustain the hub we are hopeful volunteers will keep this valuable asset in the commun-ity but we are evaluating delivering products and services that can help keep the Food Hub in the community over the long term.

We’ve come a long way in fi ve years and a huge thank you to all those that have helped and benefi ted along the journey. Until Sunday, August 21 fi ve diff erent artists will be there, sharing their ideas and tips on creating their par-ticular types of artwork. Th ere are also art materials on of-fer for campers and visitors who would like to explore their own creative nature and investigate the many ways that art and nature intersect in a beautiful location. of the 2011 Youth Community Service Awards. Forty-three high school graduates were recently presented with $2,000 scholarships toward their fi rst year of post-secondary edu-cation or training. Th e awards are based on volunteer com-munity service rather than academic standing.

Market Fest To Feature Mr. Something Something

West Kootenay EcoSociety announced recently that To-ronto’s “Mr. Something Something” will headline the Fri-day, July 29 Market Fest on Baker Street in Nelson. Th e re-nowneded jazz and world-music band will join regional favorites for the family-friendly street festival.

Following their JUNO nomination in 2007, Mr. Some-thing Something has continued to gain international rec-ognition for their unique blend of Afrobeat, jazz and pop. Th eir irresistible rhythms and interactive live shows have long served as a vehicle for social justice & environmental activism. In 2009, the seminal band launched a bicycle-powered sound system in keeping with their environ-mental message. “Mr Something Something is a perfect match for EcoSociety,” said Executive Director David Reid. “We hope that their positive message combined with their fun danceable music can help inspire people to get involved with EcoSociety’s environmental and community programs.”

Mr. Something Something rounds out a lineup that includes such local favorites as the Gisto Reggae All-stars, Lint, Th e Consonance, Moving Mosaic Samba Band, Sunshine Drive, and Th e Tuques. Th e festival will also feature over 90 craft and food vendors on the 200 and 300 blocks of Baker Street in downtown Nelson. West Kootenay EcoSociety organizes the festival once a month in the summer to support local craft speople and musicians and raise awareness, funds, and volunteers for its programs. “We rely on donations during the event to allow us to fi ght for wild rivers, keep Jumbo wild, protect caribou, and advocate for environmental policies,” said Reid. “If everyone who comes to Market Fest can plan on contributing just a couple of dollars, it would make a huge diff erence for our work in the community.”

New in July, Kootenay Kids will sponsor a kids’ stage, featuring live shadow puppetry. Other sponsors are the Nelson District Credit Union, the Royal on Baker, Kootenay Coop Radio. Th e City of Nelson supports the event by waiving the rental fee for the street and pro-viding electricity. sider participating in the Harvest Rescue program, operated by the Nelson Food Cupboard and now running for its 5th year.

Once arrangements are made with our coordinator, trained volunteers will come to your yard and harvest fruit trees, nut and berry bushes, sections of your gar-den – any area that you have registered. Typically, 1/3 of the harvest will go to you, 1/3 to the Nelson Food Cup-board and 1/3 to the volunteers. Kokanee Visitor’s Centre UpdateA burst of new funding will help the Kokanee Creek Vis-

itor’s Centre expand its programs and improve its displays, the West Kootenay EcoSociety announced yesterday. EcoSociety won a $19,000 grant from the British Colum-bia Conservation Foundation’s Legacy program for new and improved displays and learning tools, while Regional Directors Ramona Faust and Don Mickel will provide funding for programs that reach community members in the region. “We’re extremely excited, as the legacy grant will enable us to upgrade the interpretative displays inside the facility,” said Centre Coordinator, Mel Reasoner. “It’s a great way to say Happy 100th Birthday BC Parks.”

Th e centre has commissioned Nelson artist and busi-ness display designer Brian McLachlan to work with the centre’s naturalists to develop fun and interactive pieces for the centre. Th e project will also feature an installation

entitled Th e Web of Life which will feature the Kokanee salmon’s vital role in the life of the osprey, the bear, and the aquatic ecosystem of Kootenay Lake.

A $10,000 grant from RDCK Area E director Ramona Faust will provide support to daily interpretative pro-grams for park visitors and residents, while a $4000 grant from RDCK Area F director Ron Mickel is focused on children’s programs.

Th e centre is open daily from 8 am to 1 pm and 5:30 pm to 9 pm. New to the park this year are programs such as yoga and fi tness in the park, movies and Oxygen Th eatre in the Park which join the old favourites of storytelling in the park, Jerry’s Rangers and evening naturalist programs.
