DecemberJanuary

By the time you read this, Halloween and Thanksgiving will be behind us, and we will be gearing up for Christmas. This is a time for reflection and thankfulness for what we often take for granted. After over 36 years travelling and living all over the world, I often think most Americans take what we have for granted. The freedoms we enjoy are many and not always shared in other countries.

For all the new folks who have moved into Lake Bernadette since the last newsletter, you will see reminders in the newsletter about state and local parking prohibitions.

oN aNy StrEEt iNlakE bErNadEttE!

(It’s the Law!)

Remember, illegally parked vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, are subject to towing at the owner’s expense.

We have had some queries regarding the trimming/cutting of trees and limbs overhanding individual home sites. The property owner is responsible for trimming trees on home sites. Trees in conservation areas which overhang home sites may be trimmed by the property owner. Unless there is some inherent danger of property destruction, the HOA will not trim trees in conservation areas.

As I drive around Lake Bernadette, I have noticed many dirty and beat-up mailboxes. Mailboxes are a direct reflection of the home owner and the community. A little soap and water or Krud Kleaner (Home Depot) will do a lot to clean dirt, mold and slime from the boxes. In those cases where the mailboxes are bent beyond recognition, new ones can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes and/or Ace Hardware for nominal cost.

If you have a street light that is not working, please call Progress Energy and report the outage. Don’t forget to include the number located on the street light pole.

If a resident(s) has an issue to bring to the HOA, please contact Mr. Lloyd Rials. Unsigned letters of complaint seldom get action from the board. If a resident has a complaint, man up and step forward. We will maintain your anonymity if desired. Mail all complaints to the HOA through Green Acres

Property Management.

Please remember that this is our home community; let’s keep it beautiful and safe.

Respectfully, Jim Burns - President, HOA

You have probably noticed that “No Soliciting” signs are posted as you enter our community. The signs are located at both ends of Golf Links Blvd. You have probably also noticed that

solicitors ignore those signs. If you are like me, you are constantly removing door hangers and rolled up papers from your front door or porch.

In addition to having these uninvited “guests” on our properties, if you happen to be away for a few days these accumulated items are a clear sign that you are “not home”.

So what are our options?Call Pasco County Sheriff’s office 727-847-5878. The

Sheriff’s office advises that they will send an officer to advise the solicitor to leave.

Call the entity that left the item and ask them to stop.

Simply don’t buy or order anything from someone who solicits at your door – notable exceptions – Girl Scout cookies, your neighbor’s child selling for a school related fundraiser, etc.

While we are on the subject of soliciting, I am curious to get opinions on Sunday newspaper sales. For those of you who use the Eiland Blvd entrance on Sundays you know that there is regularly a gentleman selling newspapers. Do you appreciate this service or would you prefer that he not be there? Let me hear from you at my email address listed above. v

coffEE hour

Coffee Hour is back! Now that the cooler weather has returned, that hot cup of coffee really hits the spot. Join your neighbors every Saturday morning at the Clubhouse. The coffee pots are perked and ready to pour at 9:30am. See you then!

ElEctioNLost in all of the drama of Election Day was that 3 CDD Supervisors were elected to new 4 year terms. Re-elected were Elaine Sebastian from The Manors and myself from The Greens. Newly elected was Jane Tynes from Englewood.

moviE NightThe lights go down, the big screen comes to life… ok, so it’s not that dramatic. But, it’s still lots of fun and includes free pizza (thanks to our

friends at Domino’s) for our younger residents. The first Friday of every month at 6:30pm is show time.

SaNtaSanta Claus is coming to town! Yes, Santa will be right here in Lake Bernadette on December 14th at 4pm. Plan now to visit Santa at the Clubhouse. Please just call Dan, our Clubhouse Manager at 813-788-7690 to make sure that your youngster is on Santa’s list.

SidEWalkIn response to resident requests we are pleased to announce that we have recently installed a new sidewalk from the Golf Links Blvd sidewalk to our Clubhouse parking lot. This will allow smoother access to our Clubhouse for all of our residents – thanks for making the request! v

Fall is in the air and we are already planning for the Holidays. We prepare to

gather with family members near and far, plan the meals and make our lists. For families often separated by miles and states in today’s society, this is a precious time when we catch up on the lives of extended family, our children and grandchildren. It’s also an opportunity to show them again how important they are to our lives.

The Holidays are an annual must attend for everyone in my family, but at my age I sometimes look around the table and see all those who are no longer with us. If you relate to such ghosts of holidays past, then you may also share my regret that today’s children will never know these aunts, uncles and grandparents as we did.

At some point in each life most of us will say “I wish I’d talked to Dad about that” or “We never were told where Grandma’s family came from”. Yet today’s technology can help to change these regrets and add value to all your family relationships. We have the ability now to leave a family roadmap for our loved ones, sharing our values, experiences and personality with those to whom it will mean the most.

Ours is a nation of picture takers and home movie recorders. We capture moments in time, but these disjointed segments of life can never tell the whole story. Only you know the whole story of your life.

You listened long ago when your grandfather or mother told stories about their family. Only you really know and can appreciate the sacrifices they made to open doors for your own life success. There were people in your life who inspired you to become the person you are today. If you don’t share this with your family in some permanent form, your family stories will be lost and the courage and accomplishments of these lives will be left unknown and unappreciated by the very family for whom they worked and sacrificed so much.

Family stories encompass and breathe life into the history of our nation. My own grandmother grew up in the horse and buggy era and lived to see men walk upon the moon. What historic events did your family witness? How did they survive military conflicts and the deprivation of the Great Depression? Most importantly, what lessons did these

events and the families of your youth teach you?

Your children and grandchildren need to know your family’s part in the history of our nation to make history more real to them than just a text book or show on television. They need to know that their families had struggles that they overcame to survive and succeed. Knowing this will help them to face and overcome their own life challenges. No matter what the challenge might be, knowing you come from people who are survivors helps to ground young people in a society that tends to over dramatize small problems with a narrow focus on what is only important today.

If we can have an understanding of history and our place in it, today’s problems seem smaller and far more manageable. To give your children this, is to arm them for whatever challenges they will face in the future. Who can put a price on such a gift?

My Memory Lane is a company dedicated to recording the life stories of families from all walks of life. Each story and each family is unique and special. It is very simply a recorded conversation with our Personal Historian, Steve Adler in the comfort of your own home. You have the opportunity to talk about your childhood and those who were important to you. In your own words, you can share the values and inspiration you gained as you grew up, along with the challenges that you overcame to become the person you are today.

Unlike photographs in a scrapbook or videos of a birthday celebration or vacation, this is YOUR story and it’s your personality that comes across as you share what is important

to you. This is what will be treasured by your children and grandchildren in years to come. Being able to hear your voice and understand what you learned and valued from your life will become a priceless treasure to your family.

Personal Historian Steven Adler will be speaking at Lake Bernadette on December 5th and December 13th, sharing the importance of leaving your family information that will help them to remember you, to know better who they are and to give them confidence to face their own challenges of life.

We offer professional recording and editing of your life story, adding in not only your own photos but historical photographs and video clips from the world wide web to illustrate the story that you share. We can include photographs from your hometown, where you went to school and the old neighborhood; if you were in or your life was impacted by a conflict or historic event there are photographs available to help tell your story. You always have final say on what is included and what is cut from the final DVD product. Steve Adler will exclusively share with Lake Bernadette residents in December how they can do this on their own with family members and technology that most of us already have. We are very happy to show you how to do this yourself.

At My Memory Lane, we believe every family story is important and needs to be preserved. Please join us at 2PM on Wednesday, December 5th and at 7PM on Thursday, December 13th to enjoy refreshments as you learn how you can easily and affordably preserve and share your family memories. v

On Thursday, November 8th, Pasco County Commissioner Pat

Mulieri visited the Pasco County Animal Services Adoption Cen-ter in Land O’ Lakes, along with Assistant County Administrator Dr. Suzanne Salichs, Animal Behavior Consultant Marilyn Wolf, Animal Advocates and Pet Rescuers Kimberly Kernon and Sharon Smith, and Photographer Jim Weber. The visit allowed all present to tour the adoption center, visit with the animals, ob-serve the renovations to Building C that are currently underway, and discuss the Save 90% Plan. The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners approved the Save 90% Plan at their Board of County Commission meeting on Wednesday, November 7th. The Community Services De-partment/Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) Division has set the goal to save as many adopt-able animals as possible. PCAS staff is implementing several innovative measures and are in

the process of creating a revised business plan in an effort to strive towards the goal of the SAVE 90% Program. With an emphasis on giving shelter pets a second chance to find forever homes, PCAS is currently implementing eight of the eleven crucial pro-gram areas by partnering with pet rescue adopters and organizations, community residents, volunteers, government entities, and other community based organizations. “A new day has dawned for Pasco County Animal Services as we move to the Save 90% Plan. We are working more closely with volunteers and pet rescue groups to find more animals forever homes. We are so grateful to all who donate their time and labor to the animals. Together we can make a difference!” said Com-missioner Pat Mulieri. For more information on Animal Services and other County services visit www.pascocountyfl.net. v

bulldog universityBulldog University (ZHS AP program) is off and running! A couple of our goals were to increase both Advanced Placement courses and enrollment. We definitely met both goals! We now offer 16 courses through Bulldog University and have increased enrollment from 176 in 2011 to over 300 in 2012. Furthermore, the students are meeting the challenges of the Advanced Placement rigor by achieving AP Scholar status, earning a top score of 5 and exceeding the national pass rate in many of the courses.

Bulldog University students saved over $80,000 in college tuition as a result of their efforts on the AP exams last May. We really are taking a bite of college!

Open Enrollment, also known as the Annual Election Period (AEP)

is the period each year during which you may change your Medicare Advantage plan and/or Part D coverage, and/or return to Original Medicare. The AEP is October 15th – December 7th. Any plan changes you make during the AEP are effective January 1st.

Each year, Medicare health plans and Part D prescription drug plans can change their premiums, deductibles, cost-sharing and

some benefits, or discontinue their coverage altogether. You need to be aware of how your plan may change, and prepare accordingly.

Review your plan’s changes for 2013. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage and/or Part D plan, your plan should have mailed you an Annual Notice of Change by September 30th, explaining its changes for 2013. For example, the Annual Notice of Change would include information such as your premium and copayment, if your plan’s provider network

will change, and/or a list of drugs (called a formulary) that will be covered. Even if you like your current plan, review your plan’s changes for 2013 and compare other options to determine which 2013 plans have the coverage you need. Be on the alert. Medicare health plans and prescription drug plans started marketing their 2013 plans as of October 1st. Make sure you understand how a plan works before you join.

8th Annual David Reutimann Charity Cook Out and golf tournament

David Reutimann, driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will host his 8th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, Cook Out and Auction at Silverado Golf and Country Club December 7th and 8th in Zephyrhills.

An event filled with food, fun and live music, the festivities consists of a cook out, sports

memorabilia auction and concert on Friday night, followed by a golf tournament on Saturday. Last year’s event raised over $62,000 for the David Reutimann Foundation and will benefit numerous charities.

“I want to thank everyone who attended last year and those who volunteered throughout the weekend. A majority of people have to conserve these days, yet so many came out to contribute and that just says a lot about our community. It’s a blessing to be able to give back to those in need and none of that would be possible without the support we have received from everyone involved,” said David Reutimann.

sense of community shines through in Halloween clean up! by regina allison.

As community members we all hear enough about how we can improve the way we care for our Lake Bernadette community, but sometimes we need to hear about the good things we do as well.

As the holidays approach us it is the perfect time to give thanks for all of our thoughtful community members who went out of their way and pulled together to clean up all the litter left behind by the Halloween trick or treaters who visited

us this year. Our daily walks were as lovely as usual due to the efforts of our community members and you know who you are!

The pride we show in our community sets an example for our youth as they look to our actions to influence how they will develop their sense of community. Thank you to all our neighbors for making our community beautiful! v
